Tmobile Note 3 Cyanogenmod 12. CANT CALL 911!! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello everyone. I have a Note 3 with the most recent CM 12 nightly on it. Most recent Teamwin recovery. I have done a cache wipe/factory reset/pull battery ect. and there are no other mods on the phone.
The other day I tried to call 911 because some guy was road raging on a girl driving on the freeway. To my dismay the phone went into emergency call mode and then just hung at "dialing" forever, no ring or call connect was accomplished. I then hung up and the phone changed to "hanging up" status but never hung up the phantom call. It took a reboot to bring the phone back to normal operation. This happens every time 911 is called. This is a serious issue, I love CM otherwise but this is a deal breaker. I have searched high and low but cannot find a "fix" nor am I finding any other posts on people having the same issue. I'm assuming because people don't frequently call 911. Any ideas?

Maybe when it becomes "official" you'll be able to call the cop's.
Pp.

Yeah but you would figure this would be a priority over other fixes, such as issues with themes, in each nightly. I mean who's going to try CM 12 out for testing with this kind of calling problem?

Flash junkies don't think about these things until it's too late.
Maybe you should flash a "working" rom for now until cm12 becomes officially fixed.
I just run stock rooted on my phone, had my fill of bells and whistles during my captivate and S2 days. And the notion about battery life is bunk with CM, stock /debloated can perform just as well or better.
Pp.

Yeah I think I'm going to go that route as well. Too bad. I liked CM, but will probably not go back. It's too much of a hassle.
At least I brought the issue to light though

I found this out the hard way also. It just hangs on the emergency screen.
My family was attacked in our rental van in Puerto Rico. They broke out multiple windows and bent the sliding door in before we could speed away. I had to use another phone to get 911.
This still hasn't been fixed as of the 4-9-15 nightly. Pretty sad that they don't think this is an important feature.
For people wanting to test this themselves, call into your local dispatch center (preferable) or police department on their NON-EMERGENCY number and ask if you can make a test 911 call. If they are not busy they will usually let you. When you dial 911 tell them it is a test call and that you got permission from the dispatch center or police department to make the call. You may be fined if you don't get permission first.

CM12 has been my first experience with Cyanogenmod, what are the chances of this issue being corrected? Anyone with more experience than I, do you think the note 3 will see an official release? Not being able to make a 911 call in an emergency is very worrying.

What the heck did you do with your rental van that caused an attack on your family, and of all places, PR?
Just curious.

We were in Fajardo near the ferries. We had stopped along the side of the road next to the ocean to punch in directions on google maps. A thug passed us on a bike and then attacked a pedestrian behind our van on the sidewalk. The thug was choking to death the pedestrian and my mom who could see it from her vantage point in the back of the van yelled stop. The thug then started attacking us. Keep in mind this is in broad daylight around 3pm. Both my parents, who are over 65, and my wife were in the van. The police never responded to our location after calling 3 times. They claimed they couldn't find us but never called us back when they couldn't find us or told us they had given up searching. They were never coming. We finally had to ask a parking lot attendant we found to help us to the police station.
Later I found out that a pregnant american tourist was abducted, raped, and murdered near our location in 2009. She had her throat slashed. Needless to say we won't be back any time soon. lol.
The whole experience was surreal and felt like something out of a movie.

@mircury, that is crazy. In a case like that I would have used the van as a weapon and backup over the thug and his bicycle.
I used to live near Fajardo years ago in Cayo Santiago and saw my share of stupid people.
You never know.

GOOD READ - Text Message From The FUTURE problem

The problem is when I receive text messages from any network, the time stamp is messed up and shows up two minutes in the future (see picture below). I have done a complete hard reset about five times, tried all different software updates, went completely back to stock (unrooted), tried AOSP roms, tried Gingerbread roms, tried Sense roms with AOSP mms.apk, and whatever I try I cannot get rid of this bug. It causes all my text messages to be scrambled and not in order. I use this phone 90% of the time for texting. It's how I handle most of my business. I called Sprint and ended up getting up to their advanced tech support where they simply did a provisioning reset (completely unactivated and activated again) and after that they said there is nothing they can do. So I took it into the remedial Sprint tech in my local Sprint store (don't have enough time to travel 2 hours to get to a corporate store), and they did another master hard reset where they completely reloaded the software (I guess). Still not fixed. I am outside of my 30 days so i cannot do a swap. I cannot send my phone in to HTC because I simply cannot live without a phone for 2 weeks, and I don't have a backup. I've done all types of searching on google and the only thing I could find was about 6 months ago people were having this problem but the times were delayed by an hour or two. The texts are not delayed they show up on time, they just have the wrong time stamp. It has to be something with the network and not the software. My immediate suspicion is that is has something to do with my MMS provisioning to the network but I really don't know how to look into this.
This is probably one of the weirdest problems you will ever see. The picture at the bottom shows the right time in the corner but look at the time on my last incoming text. Off by two minutes in the future. Can anybody offer my some advice I am up for anything. I can also post or send anybody anything. I need this fixed but I just can't deal with Sprint anymore. I realized they are a business but if they support a faulty product, they should fix it without taking anything away from their customers. I always feel like Sprint is trying to take something away from their customers. Oh also one of the Sprint techs said the EVo would not get an official gingerbread update because Sprint wants to push other phones.........most likely a fib but who knows....sounds like Sprint and HTC. Anyways
Just a thought, what if those texts really are coming from the future? I mean for all you know you are caught in some sort of weird time vortex thing that distorts your perception of time, making it seem like you are in the present when actually you are two minutes behind everybody else. That would make any text coming in to you be from 2 minutes in the future. I know this sounds far fetched but I wouldn't discount it as a possibility.
This is a bug in android. Search the market for sms time fix and see if that helps.
Usually it's off by hours and not minutes though. There is also a setting somewhere that will let you use the local time instead of network time but I don't remember where it is at. You could also try disabling roaming, I keep mine locked to Sprint's network and never lose a signal.
Never heard of this fix, but I got the same bug. I just installed chomp sms, works perfect now.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Try CM7. Perhaps the bug was fixed in Gingerbread (2.3.1)
I tired gingerbread....and the funny thing is this only happens to some phones because my roomate has an evo right now and it does not do any of this....so it is not a problem with android......it has to be the Sprint servers or something. I'm on fully stock right now (no root). I tired gingerbread (CM7) and it didn't help anything. I'm taking my phone back into Sprint today but this time I'm going to give them hell. I payed 350 dollars for this phone I will not settle for "Oh, well we can't do anything about it." You shouldn't have to install anything extra on your phone. I tried that SMS fix but the funny thing is, it messes everything up because my Sprint texts are fine but my verizon and att are all futuristic. And no I am not in some weird wormhole or time continuum the phone is just messed up. It happens with electronics but there is usually this thing called a warranty that allows for direct replacement and for some reason cell phone companies have avoided this whole customer based process. I'll get back in about an hour.
Alright went to my local Sprint Repair Center and they could do absolutely nothing. However I did have the manager push through a priority claim ticket to the network engineers and hopefully, and I do mean hopefully, they call me back. Apparently the last few times I've called they told me they started a ticket, and actually didn't. I think they think I was telling them a lie or something. The manager there was actually extremely helpful and told me he would make sure I get a new phone if this doesn't work. If anybody has any other suggestions please let me know.
I'm curious if this would fix it...
Go to your time options. Settings-Date/Time If automatic is ticked, untick it. If its not, tick it. I would think the bug is caused when a text is sent with a timestamp via the network, at lets say 6:00 but your phone is registered as 5:58. Your timestamp would get all different kinds of backwards in your text app. I'm not sure if time on a phone would be on a BIOS chip like a computer, but it would make sense that your phone is just simply registering the time wrong. If you check/uncheck that and it still does it, simply hard-set the time two minutes ahead.
Recently I've started having the same exact problem, except I have the Samsung Epic. Called customer support once and they "reset messaging" which didn't help at all. Installing any third-party messaging apps haven't helped, and neither has switching between local and network-provided time. Also, its random, so most incoming messages are messed up, but some are actually correct.
I'll try manually setting the time ahead two minutes and bugging some people to text me.
Edit: No luck, with the time set ahead two minutes, incoming timestamps are two minutes ahead of the new setting as well.

Please call technical support and get everything into the Sprint system. Ask them to push it to a network engineer. I have to wait until one of them get a hold of me but they may end up just replacing the phone. I'm glad to hear that other people are having the problem also. Also an update, it is text messages from all networks that do this, including Sprint. I will keep this thread updated because I need to get this problem solved. At this point, I don't think there is anything left for me to do from the user end. I just have to wait for Sprint to get it all figured out. I do have insurance and they said they might just put in a request for a new one at no cost to me......also sounds like bs because I thought you had to pay a 100$ deductible no matter what. The Sprint tech said you don't have to pay for the deductible if its a software or network issue and there is no screen crack or water damage. My EVO is in perfect condition but the software doesn't work. Hopefully they will give me a reconditioned one that actually works.
This is a Sprint network problem. Various sprint phones (not just Androids) are notorious for this type of behavior (wrong time stamps, messages out of order, delay in receiving and sending messages, etc etc). It's very frustrating indeed.
For the time being, try using one of the SMS apps on the market like Handcent or ChompSMS. You may still get incorrect time stamps from time to time, but your messages will arrive/send in order.

I appreciate the response but I really don't like using aftermarket apps that don't go along with the theme of the phone. I'm real OCD like that. I don't even like apps that have free next to their name. If you pay 350$ for a piece of electronics, everything should work on it, including software and hardware. The sprint engineers need to get this figured out. This is unacceptable. The amount of money they are getting from their customers is ridiculous so why can't everything work. I realize their stock has taken a murdering but you have to keep your customers happy, that's number one. Anyways, I'm waiting too hear from Sprint but they said 72 hours not including the weekend so If I don't hear from them by next Tuesday, they will be getting a nasty call.
Exact same problem!
It has been driving me crazy. I will receive a text at 9:05, respond to it, and it will say it's 1-2 minutes earlier.
Another thing: we have four Sprint phones in the house. If we're all looking at them at the same time, they don't all say the same time. So, I tend to think that the time that shows when I receive a text is actually the time the sender's phone says. (Is that confusing enough for you?) Could that be the difference?
It only started recently, probably when I updated my phone last month.
This happens randomly on my Evo. Certain people I'm texting with, the time stamps will be out of whack, ranging from 2 minutes off, to over an hour off. My time stamp is always accurate, it's just the other person's that is inaccurate. I can be texting with a different person, at the same time, and the other thread will be perfectly normal. It's annoying. My phone also thought it was somewhere in Amsterdam (i wish i was there with it too) for a few hours, and nothing I tried would get it to show my actual location. I attribute all of this to google issues, and not actual problems with the phone.

Alright still not fixed as of Monday....I have one more day until I can call Sprint and give them hell which I love...not....but anyways I've been doing some testing on when actually the time stamp is off. The time stamp is off from any network including Sprint only when the phone is asleep (or the screen is off). Then the time stamp comes in 2-3 minutes in the future. When my phone is on everything comes in fine and one time and all the time stamps are good. It seems like when the phone is asleep its grabbing things from the network 2 min ahead for some reason.
Alrigth just an update on the situation.....called Sprint back they said they had no recollection of my callings the last couple of days....completely unacceptable. Anyways I got real nasty with them and got sent up to retentions (I told them the iphone for verizon looks really good right now.) Walked all over the retentions people and they said just go to a store and get a warranty swap (since I pay the 7 dollars a month or whatever.) I went to the local store (Lafayette, IN 47909) and they said that I was the first one with this problem but not the last. Apparently right after I left the store the first time I went, about 10 to 15 people came in right after that with the same problem. The manager at the store finally got a technician ticket in and apparently the problem has reached a ton of people all the way down to Indianapolis. Even some of the workers at the store are having problems with their EVOs and Epics. The explanation I got was it has to do with android and the text messaging server within the Sprint Network. If anyone else is having this problem...PLEASE CALL SPRINT AND ***** TO THEM. They need to fix this as soon as possible but they won't recognize it as THEIR problem unless a bunch of people call in about it. It should be getting fixed but I will check back on Friday.
I noticed this same problem on mine. Looks like I'll be calling Sprint tonight and stopping by my local store. Maybe I'll just go to Sprint World HQ here in KC and talk to them about it.

Please do....I'm wondering if there is a bug in the sms server that is causing this and it is slowly spreading nationwide. I call dibs on pointing this out if this is the case. This was from the mouth of a Sprint Employee. "Sprint will not do anything on an individual level but if the problem spreads to more than enough people, they will jump on it immediately." Now how much people is the real questions? I think the Sprint people thought I was crazy and now they are gonna be like....damn we should have listened to him. It's been going on for about 2 weeks now and I'm hoping it gets fixed before the end of the billing cycle.
Hey OP...as you may have figured by now your not the only one. I get it too. I kind of just let it go since it was minor. Mine also, when someone sends me a pic it goes to the very top of the conversation as opposed to in line with the rest of the texts...again i kind of let it go, but i do understand that we all paid our money, we should have perfection or at least 99.9. Thing is i dont want to swing by sprint and them see warm 2.2!!!! Then i'm really screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just do a backup and flash a stock RUU.....sprint needs to know about this..It has nothing to do with our phones but everything to do with their servers and they wont do anything until enough people complain. Anybody in the midwest that is getting text message problems, please call Sprint and complain. Explain to them exactly what is happening and tell them to give you a ticket number and tell them you expect a call within 72 hours. Get you case in so this can be fixed for everybody.

$50 credit from Sprint for LOS

After seeing so many people with LOS issues (myself being one of them) I figured I was due some credit back from Sprint for my trouble. I called and got in touch with a rep who wanted to troubleshoot my phone for the problems. This is my only phone and I explanined that it is a widespread issue and that a large amount of people in forums, including the Sprint forum, are experiencing the same problems. She offered to give me a replacement phone. I explained that it wouldn't do myself, Sprint, or Samsung any favors to replace the phone when it was most likely a firmware/OS/software related issue. She offered to give me a different model. I politely refused and mentioned that I know Sprint is aware of the issue and is most likely diligently working to solve it. I only wanted some sort of reimbursement for the LOS that has happened and may continue to happen until said update arrives. She asked me to hold while she spoke to her superior. When she returned, she said she could give me a $50 credit for the inconvenience. However, if I continue to experience the same problem, they will not be able to offer any more reimbursements. I should then run through any troubleshooting that they ask me to do and possibly get a replacement. She strongly suggested that I take it in for inspection at a sprint store. I may do this. But, I would really like to have a stock ROM to flash in Odin before I do that. I can just hear the tech tell me how it was all the fault of rooting that wrecked the radio.
I would like to stress the point that I was very polite, calm, reasonable, and understanding of what she had to do while speaking to the rep.
You are giving their average tech far too much credit. Apologies to any in present company...though you likely know precisely what I mean. (If you are here you aren't their "average" guy)

They have a set group of questions they are required to ask, troubleshooting that they are required to do, and are not able to offer the type of technical support that you can get in a forum. The corporation will not allow them to. Every call in is recorded and statistics are most likely kept on how to keep the average customer happy with minimal effort. This sets guidelines that are enforced on their employees. Your best bet is to be polite, and kind with them. They have to do their job and as long as you stay politely firm in what you want, generally, you will get your way. Being rude, arrogant, demeaning, or negative with them will only get you a headache and them another ****ty day at work with a story to tell in the breakroom about the last arsehole who called in and thought he/she was "somebody".

You have obviously rooted your phone when many pointed out that zedo causes los. Your noise about phone quality given this fact is just disturbing. I suggest you back off to stock kernal plus root that has fixed los for many including myself. And be honest with sprint that you did so instead of generating fud so they can focus on real issues.

You are completely mistaken and are barking up the wrong tree. LOS is happening to many who have not rooted their phones. If you are not experiencing LOS anymore after flashing back to stock kernal, it is purely a coincidence. I have given no "noise about phone quality". You should take a read of my post and read it in full, again. I plainly said that it was a software related issue and that Sprint is aware of it. Sprint and Samsung are working on fixing it. Links have been posted numerous times as to Samsung and Sprint being aware of the problems. Everyone who has said that Zedo's kernal has caused this has been mistaken. People who have never even heard of Zedo's kernal are having the same troubles. Please read read read before flaming. I will not reply to any more ignorant remarks when it is obvious that the flamer has misread the OP, jumped to conclusions, and flew off on a delirious tantrum.
So should I call and get $50 too? I haven't lost anything to wanna ask for a reimbursement even if I have LOS all I do is reboot...I'm not losing anything...nothing is perfect

LOS was caused for me through rooting. I can't speak for everyone but I can say that it did cause LOS for my device and probably others. You said it was inconvenience for you to have to go through this and mention maybe even taking your phone in for repair. You really can't blame others for assuming you are dealing with the LOS issues. And if you are not I don't really understand why you called Sprint to complain about this issue.
Maybe you should take a longer look at what you posted before deciding rather or not someone misread you. Though, it would probably be a waste of time. You've already proved to be oblivious to the fact that root is causing LOS for a lot of users.

You apparently don't use your phone much for calls and text. My work calls me and will expect me to respond soon. Missing important phone calls can be really costly for me. I have standards, they don't have to be perfect but I do expect it to meet my standards. What is the point of having it if it doesn't?

Do whatever you feel is ethical. I have lost plenty. I've lost business calls, missed potential appointments with clients, and numerous personal calls. I got the messages late and missed out on money and activities that I would have been involved in if I had the service that I pay a premium to rely on. The $50 doesn't come close to covering that. But, I feel that it is an act of good character that they gave it to me. I wouldn't have called and asked for it, if I didn't feel that I deserved it after being a loyal customer for over 12 years. It shouldn't be my responsibility to have to make sure I look and see if I have service every 5 minutes, when I am in an area that normally gets amazing 4G signal. I'm glad you haven't lost anything and I hope that continues for you.
BTW, I had LOS before flashing anything.

I havnt done a single thing to my phone other than change launchers and I get LOS. Havnt rooted it, havnt even wanted to yet. This is a real problem and I hope people do continue to call in a try to get money from sprint. If this continues then they might notice, "hey maybe we should fix this problem because its costing us 50 dollars worth of credit per customer that calls in to *****". Obviously that last part is wishful thinking thought. But come on dude, no need to flame someone like that, (especially when youre wrong).

I'm not on Zedo's kernel and I have LOS. I've had LOS on Stock without root, stock with root, v3 and v5 of ACS's kernel. Only one I haven't had LOS on is Zedo's, and that's cause I haven't tried it. Take your smug ass comments somewhere else.
I get los at work every time I bend over or kneel down to repair something, and it keeps powering down and back on. But I fixed it by moving my case to the side of my belt. My body blocked the signal and pushed the power button

Its not a ROM issue. If you live or travel in an area with ****ty signal you will get it. I had it about 7 times today. I ended up just turning the phone off. Basically if the phone loses signal you have to reboot.
Now I realize that many of you live in your mom's basement, work at the McD around the corner, and have a sprint tower in your back yard so you think the rest of us are crazy. No, the rest of us travel and enter areas where sprint coverage sucks.
Using roam control and leaving the phone on roaming I don't get the LOS unless I get deep into a building and lose the verizon signal.

I live in a great spot with excellent 4G coverage. I live on my own, work for myself and am kind of crazy myself so I kind of have a right to call others crazy. I am getting the LOS bug randomly and frequently. I have full bars here at home. It just dies and gives the dead circle. It just did it less than half hour ago. It also did it numerous times while working in the field, as well..
Some say that it is fixed by resetting their MSL. Some say they fixed it by flashing a certain kernal. Some believe that if you keister a pine cone and scrub your face with lemon custard that it will fix it, too. None of these things...er...has worked for me.

Sprint selling the ET4G IS FRAUD!

THIS IS FRAUD.I talked to a high up rep for 45 minutes yesterday and she said we know it is a known issue but sorry no help for you on your bill.
She then said THIS IS A SAMSUNG PROBLEM so i said well are you selling this phone right now? she said yes.I said are you telling people this phone has these problems? she said nothing then said ill pass your concerns along.
If you want into a sprint store NO REP is going to tell you there is a known issue with this phone so they commit fraud selling a phone they say they know there is a known issue with.
Places recall stuff when there is a problem yet sprint keeps selling IT! not right.

Two things:
1) You get a 14 day return policy. Use it if necessary. You have that responsibility/option as a customer.
2) Reps are going to vary. Some simply don't know.
Both reps I dealt with informed me of the issue before purchase. [One is a member of xda]
#1 You get a 14 day window and some people will not figure it out in those 14 days since there are times you can get 5 in 1 day and none for 3 days.People who are not on here may not figure it out for a month.
#2 they sell it on there website with no disclaimer it is fraud if you ask a legal expert i would bet on it.May be a very gray area but i have no doubt it is.
I can tell you about issues with every phone that is out there right now. Do you think a sales rep is going to go through the list with you.
I have no problems with my phone and have never seen an LOS on it. If the rep told me there is a probem with LOS they would have bee lying to me. lol
Yes every phone has issues but a KNOWN ISSUE THIS IS that sprint knows is widespread some issues are for like 10% but not like this where it is close to i would guess 75% to 90% of the phones do it.
This phone did it from launch and sprints knows it is a issue a known issue as sprint calls it which a rep says when they call it a known issue it is very widespread.
And it is not the reps job to tell people IT IS SPRINTS AND THEY SHOULD PUT A DISCLAIMER out on there website since it is a known issue no matter how you cut it.
And why? because they would lose sales.I would love to see any other type of place keep selling a item they know has issues.Would Ford? Honda? heck they recall them let alone stop selling them.

Okay... on one hand you say that it may happen only rarely and on the other hand you throw out numbers like 75% to 90% of phones.
Where did you get these numbers?
Ok known troll of this forum LOS is a issue that can happen 5 times in 1 day then go 3 days without it.It has no set amount of times it does it to anyone.Me it does it 1 time or so per day.It all depends on how much you use your phone.
It is totally random how much it happens to each phone. But weather it happens 1 time a day or 5 or whatever amount it happens to a major amount of the phones.Enough to call it a very known issue by sprint.

Bro your being a **** and unrealistic , the phone has a problem it will be sorted, I know the PHOTON has had a ton of patches sent out since day 2 when they started having loss of sound in the earpiece, although it sucks having patches but regardless it is still one of the best 2 phones we see #1 being the ET4G! The los is annoying but brief and is being worked on as we rant about the only true negative with this product!
Fraud? Legal experts? hahaha you dont think Sprint and Samsung both have a legal team haha come on to be annoyed is one thing but dont start trying to throw out hints for somebody else to fight your battle
75% - 90%.....lol
Glad you threw out the facts.....You must have been a pretty busy person pulling your metrics and data.
This number is based on few users on XDA who are known to root their phones. If you were truly going to do a test, it would have to be based on untouched never rooted phone. Rooted phones would not even be considered in the data gathered, so that leaves out most XDA users.
You do realize how many of these phones are sold and how many of it's users are actually on this site, right?

How old are you?! Have you ever bought anything anywhere?! That's how sales are done buddy. It's up to you to research the product prior to investing in it. The rep will always try to close the sale by exagerating, omitting things. It is not fraud in this country.
90% of statistics are made up on the spot..
A false representation of a matter of fact—whether by words or by conduct, by false or misleading allegations, or by concealment of what should have been disclosed—that deceives and is intended to deceive another so that the individual will act upon it to her or his legal injury.
Fraud must be proved by showing that the defendant's actions involved five separate elements: (1) a false statement of a material fact,(2) knowledge on the part of the defendant that the statement is untrue, (3) intent on the part of the defendant to deceive the alleged victim, (4) justifiable reliance by the alleged victim on the statement, and (5) injury to the alleged victim as a result.
A statement of belief is not a statement of fact and thus is not fraudulent. Puffing, or the expression of a glowing opinion by a seller, is likewise not fraudulent. For example, a car dealer may represent that a particular vehicle is "the finest in the lot." Although the statement may not be true, it is not a statement of fact, and a reasonable buyer would not be justified in relying on it.

The percent of phones is not known. Who will release statistics, Sprint? Samsung? I don't think either. My phone is bone stock and I have had LOS only a handful of times I know of. I get data roaming several times/week at my house and this is while on wifi. Does not wifi count as a data connection? Hope this improves with software update but could become worse till better. If I treated patients like this I would lose my license and be on welfare.
Doc
Stock pulled kernal/root and cwm. Stock rom. No Los for a week now. Also noticed that juicedefender cause the issue sometimes. After getting rid of it. I'm all good.

It's not like you couldn't trade your Epic Touch for any of the other high end phones with money on top. Quit crying and wait for a fix or trade it. Or buy an iPhone 4s. Oh wait, they aren't perfect either. I hear their battery life is poor compared to the 4.

When I was a custom kernel, I got LOS around 3x per day as OP does. When I switched back to stock, the number reduced to 0. Same with a friend who I did the same thing with.
Op,
If you are *****ing about LOS, and are on a custom kernel, then I have no sympathy. If you are on a stock kernel, ROM then raise hell brutha
I've never experienced LOS on both my Epic 4g, and my Epic 4g Touch. Weird.

For the first time ever, I actually agree with one of your posts. For Sprint to claim that the responsibility is on Samsung is disingenuous and only a tactic to deflect customer anger.

High pitch squeal / squeek / fax tones during phone calls

Anybody running into this? I bought a GNex about 2 weeks ago and when on a call I get a high pitch squeal randomly. Loud... like pull the handset from my head loud. The person on the other end doesn't hear it. I called VZW several times and they say they haven't heard of this. My wife got the same phone when I did and it happens to her, too. My twin got the phone about a week later and his is fine. I took the phone in to VZW earlier this week and they mailed me a replacement... it does it also. I changed the ROM to the Open Kang ROM to see if it might be a software thing... still doing it. Very frustrating. It happens when sitting in my office on 4G or 3G, when driving, etc... no real rhyme or reason that I've been able to figure out. The squeal happens every 3-15 minutes without any real pattern. I don't see any notifications or anything that are new after the squeal takes place.
If anybody else is experiencing this can you post? If you fixed please advise! Thanks!!!

Yes, that happened to me when i was running stock at first too. Once i flashed AOKP 4.0.3 and franco's kernel, I haven't had that problem at all. It was REALLY annoying, sporadic, no rhyme or reason. It was also waaayyy louder than i thought the speaker could ever get ironicly enough. Also dont know if the new radios might have helped too, I flashed those separately because they aren't included on the 4.0.3 roms. Hope it helps =\
I called Verizon about this again today. I had enough trouble with one device that they sent me a second device. The second device does it too. Very frustrating. The device is also much slower than my old Incredible. I officially hate this device. Should be faster with a solid connection to 4G. I'm going to see what is necessary for VZW to somehow get me out of this device and into anything different. Hell, at this point I'm ok with an iPhone... anything but this.
I'm going to use this thread to track what I've been doing in the hopes that it can help others if they are dealing with VZW with this issue.
Dec/11 - bought the GNex new. Had the squealing problems and talked with the store I bought it from. They thought it was an app and suggested I make changes to my apps. I did that for a week or so and they finally exchanged the phone for new.
Jan/12 - new device arrives. Same trouble. I dropped the stock OS and went to the OKP OS. Same trouble. Figure I'll take notes for vzw and see if I can figure it out. What I found...
Seems to happen when talking with other mobile users, never to a land line. Later narrowed it down to only other vzw users, did not happen when talking to at&t users. Later narrowed it down that it only happens to other vzw users who are using the GNex device as well.
Called vzw last week after growing frustrated again. They had me do some troubleshooting on the device and re-provisioned my account. Same trouble. They sent me another new device. I put this device back to stock and relocked.
Feb/12 - 3rd device arrives. Stock OS, no apps installed. Had the same problem that same day. Called vzw the next morning and they had me put the device in safe mode so that they could determine if the problem was hardware or software. If you didn't know there was a safe mode now you know. Boot holding the down vol button until you're in the OS. Immediately had the same problem.
Called vzw back and demanded a different device. They told me they couldn't change the device because I was outside of 14 days. No kidding, I wouldn't be outside of 14 days if vzw hadn't been asking me to do all of this troubleshooting. I finally agree to pay full retail price if they credit my account for the past 3 months of troubleshooting. Nope. They make me upgrade eligible and I went a completely different direction to an iPhone hoping that this stupid squeal would be gone. I'll sell the GNex for close to retail on Craigslist at this point.
Mar/12 - iPhone is running for a day and I talk with my wife (GNex device). The squeal is there but MUCH SOFTER in volume. I will talk with my brother as I leave work tonight because I always have trouble with him on the phone. Hopefully this will help me know for sure.
What I think I'm finding is that it's not necessarily my GNex that had a problem... it's the reception from OTHER GNex users that is causing me the trouble. My wife has complained about the problem as well but at a much lesser frequency and only when on the phone with me. We don't talk on the phone that much. The curious piece is that my brother doesn't have the problem.
More to follow as I figure out for sure whether or not the iPhone has the same problem. If so then it's not my device, nevermind that I'm on my 4th device in 3 months. VZW has been entirely worthless through this process and has made me fight the entire way. Their customer service is horrible and the managers that I have been talking to should be fired. I can't believe they allow managers to talk with customers the way some of these guys do (especially this last Paul LaFranky dude (not sure about his last name)).
So I just came across this thread while doing my normal daily browsing here and find it interesting.
My nephew who has a SGSII here in east coast Canada on Bell txt'ed me earlier to ask if I ever get a "crazy squeal noise from your phone when you're trying to make/receive a call".
It's not all the time. He said it happened about 4 times in the past few months and it's only a land line. He doesn't make a lot of voice calls, mainly the 1 land line (work). When it happens, he hangs up and calls back and it's fine.
It may be completely unrelated to your issue. He's on stock gingerbread.
Anyway, thanks for posting the details and keeping record, i'll follow this for sure.
I have now had two calls today with the high pitch noise. At this point it is def not my device as I'm now on an iPhone. Good news is I can go back to the gnex. Bad news is that I'm all but certain that gnex devices are somehow SENDING these tones. With as unhelpful as vzw has been I'm beginning to think I may simply need to call those people less often... So annoying. I'll call vzw in the morning and see what they have to say. Ugh.
Mine does it too. It is my second one as my first stopped working on 3g so they replaced it. The first phone did it too. I just live with it.... I dont talk on phone much.
I get them as well with the GN, but I was also getting it with my thunderbolt from time to time.
My brother is upgrading to 4.0.4 today and will drop a new OS on his GNex. Once he does that I have asked him to call me to chat for a little bit. It would be great if that takes care of the problem! Fingers crossed. If that doesn't solve the problem I will call VZW with the additional info. If it does then I'll go back to the GNex and sell this new iPhone.
Update - called VZW to have my account updated with the latest notes. While on the phone the lady I spoke with acknowledged that there is a KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS PROBLEM with Samsung devices. The devices that she said are affected are the Galaxy Nexus, the Charge and the Stratosphere. Samsung is supposedly working on an update that will address the problem. No ETA for that update.
I sure wish someone had told me about this sometime over the past 3 months of troubleshooting... it would have saved me the money for the iPhone as well as the hassle with vzw. Hopefully someone here will get some good out of this.
How odd. I have a VZW Nexus, but have not encountered this issue. I don't often make calls, but they sound fine when I do.
The problem is on the other end for the person you are talking to... they will hear a high pitch squeal from time to time. Mine would do it as often as every 10-15 seconds or so or could be as little as every half hour (or not at all depending on length of call).
I have talked with my brother a couple times today after he upgraded to 4.0.4 and haven't had the problem at all. I wonder if that update includes some work to fix this. ??

4th nexus same issue

As of now I'm on my 4th Gnexus and once again I'm being plagued with the same issue I have since my first one back on launch day. Loss of voice during a call, high pitch noises, (think scratching on a chalk board) loss of sound on all key press as well as numbers when dialing.
I have called about this issue. First time around Verizon said take it back get a new one. So I did that and so on happened 2 more times same issue same results. Now on my 4th one its starting again. So verizon said it was Samsung and Samsung said Verizon.
So I was hoping for some input on what direction I should go now.

This is an obvious case of user-error. The odds of getting a defunct phone that many times in a row is about like winning the lottery, literally.

when you said high pitch noises, do you mean that during a call you can hear a buzzing sort of noise when people speak? I get that on my nexus too, it's slightly irritating but I'll live with it, better than spending time to unroot it, go back to stock and then waste a whole week in the service centre.

It's obviously not user error.. If you read a bit you'd see there is a very lengthy thread about this very issue.. It's called microphone cutting out during call or something like that.. You can replace your phone as much as you want, it's not going to change it. the cause is unknown but I believe they have at least determined it not to be hardware..

That is correct. Audio outbound gets garbled and then lost completely. This is the worst bug of this phone. I can't count how many phone calls where I'd have to hang up and redial because the other person couldn't hear me anymore.

I'd blame the carrier, as i'm on Orange UK, and I use T-Mobile UK as well, and call quality both ends, is excellent
Your wife may not have the issue but are y'all talking on the same tower when the issue arises? I'm on Verizon as well and never had this problem. That said, I don't talk a lot, maybe 400 minutes a month - mostly to my boss that has an iPhone so half the time I can't hear crap anyway due to that fact.
I will say, as a recent T-Mobile transplant that has used Verizon off and on for several years with work phones, Verizon doesn't seem to have the same call quality in general terms. Maybe it's just my ear, but even back in the day I owned some Motorola claim shells that sounded pretty muddy.
Have you tried to replicate the problem on a completely stock phone with no 3rd party apps? I wonder if there's a conflict somewhere.

I pretty much tried everything. New sim cards, using it with nothing installed (stock) I'm super bummed I been waiting on a nexus device to hit Verizon for a while now. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to put up with this.
What about rolling back onto 3G? Are you on the fringe of LTE connectivity at all?
I know a lot of people talk about call quality. Frankly, I haven't experienced any issues and no one has told me that it sounds like crap (and believe me, I have friends that would mention it, we're a HARSH bunch). I don't doubt they exist, and you certainly don't sound like 3/4ths of XDA that are overly dramatic whiners. Out of curiosity, roughly how many minutes a month do you talk? Any chance that it's just an issue where, well you know, the more you do something the more opportunity to experience something that goes wrong? I used to talk a ton for work, like 3000+ minutes a month. I had a lot more dropped calls then than now, know what I mean?
You know what I'd do, which Verizon would HATE but, hey, you are the customer. I'd take you and your wife's phone into Verizon, and have them flip the numbers around. Keep EVERYTHING else about the phones the same. Her apps stay, your apps stay, just swap the numbers around and try her phone with your regular use for maybe 3 or 4 days. If you can replicate the problem while she doesn't experience the issue at all on your phone, then you can probably narrow it down to either the tower your on, or maybe the phone really is just buggy after you've been on it for a while.
Every so often I'll have a long conversation and a call gets dropped, but I've never not been able to hear someone or them not be able to hear me. Like, they're the typical issues that you could assign to either being a tower pass off problem or the nature of LTE long before the phone (on either my end or the other person's end). But, like I said, that's a rare occurrence for me.
What version of ICS are you running? I had this same problem, specifically and most frequently the one where the audio cuts out of a call, sometimes it'd do it and force me to re-call my girlfriend as many as 3 or 4 times in an hour.
What fixed it was flashing ICS 4.0.4 released from Google themselves (if I waited for Verizon to do it I'd probably be single by now). This fixed it for me immediately right out of the gate. I've had the other issues you spoke of every so often but the audio cut out was constant. This fixed everything. Been running for a while without problems (month or so maybe?).
Eh...you didn't flash it straight from Google. At best, you flashed it straight from the Verizon/Google ota server the test ota is on
I stand corrected, this is what I get when trying to post while on hold at work. Not straight from Google, leaked 4.0.4. Originally found it elsewhere linked to a google domain site, but it's best served up here.

Give that a shot for now, fixed my woes anyway.

What network do you suppose he would try?
Sounds like the phone is doing you a favor. If I had to talk to my girlfriend for an hour a day I'd want my phone to kill itself.

Did not fix the microphone going out issue for me :-( I just flashed the 4.0.4 leak on Tuesday hoping it would alleviate this problem, but I had the mic go out about 15 mins into a call last night. Same story as with stock, had to hang up and re-dial to continue the conversation.
