Holy Smokes 99GB of Cache Data?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

So I went to update some play store apps and they all failed. I assumed it was my network. I went to take a picture of my dog and it said unable to save photo, SD card full... Confusing I saw this.. How the hell can this happen? I just cleared the cache but damn what is going on?

How the heck can you have 99GB used when there's only 32GB under Device Storage????
Have you factory reset? I've been suggesting this a lot lately to many different people, but something like this used to happen to me almost monthly on my old tablet when it was running Honeycomb. It was a known bug back then.

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.
Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.
had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

3g/4g back in business

So after a week, my 3g and 4g are working again. I went through the whole talking to level 2 support, visiting the store and swapping out my phone/sim card...and that all didnt help. Probably something on Verizon's side and NOT THE PHONE.
So if you are having problem with Verizon's LTE Galaxy Nexus, call them and log a ticket and have an engineer look at the problem.

With the pics that the nexus takes, your probably better off with them erased before anyone had a chance to see them.

im used to the droid, and droid x where flashing doesnt erase internal memory. being that the memory for the phone is internal, it gets wiped.
I wasnt expecting that, but i should have been i suppose.

Not sure what they did but probably took them a while to fix mine because of the holidays. I had already got a new GN and sim card from the Verizon store and that didnt fix the issue. The problem with me not getting 3g/4g was on Verizon's end and a network engineer had to look at and resolve the problem. I got a call back Monday (like they said they would) but have not returned the call yet. Making sure the prob is fixed/stable before I call. So far, all is good.

Yea, I had pics and a couple of videos. I ran back home and did a backup of the photos (and unrooted my phone) before doing a complete factory reset. I miss the external SD card slot for the soul purpose of storing pics/vids and easy backup/removal. Just have to remember that when doing and custom ROM work or phone service to backup all vids/pics.
Oh, I was in Northern IL around the Freeport/Rockford area and had the data issues. So hopefully yours is fixed to...but like I said, probably busy around the holidays and the 3.7 million android activations that carriers have had this year.
That's the whole purpose of Google+ instant upload. Automatically saves all your pics and video to a private album that you can always access. I never worry about my pics and vids because they are always there, in full quality.
I set it to sync over wifi and when charging, which is usually when I'm home or going to sleep. Take a bunch of pictures during the day, delete the ones you don't want and sync them automatically over night. Done and easy.

Exactly. You guys have The Google Phone in all of its pureness and you refuse to use it to its potential. I dont want all my pics/vids online. I would rather sync them with my PC and back them up that way. Instant upload is cool, but just not something for me.
must be all those naughty pics you're taking lol. Did I mention it was a private album only you can see? To each their own. Makes things easy for me especially if you switch roms.

Nothing on the internet is private. Facebook is supposed to be private but I dont store much info about myself there either.
Internet privacy is an allusion. I've seen friend's info get hacked and their data revealed. I like to stay anonymous. But like you said, to each their own.
Welcome to the party, I get hardly any 3G service and absolutely no 4G service in my area. My Droid X has full 3G bars in same area and friends Verizon thunderbolt gets great 4G service as well. 3G/4G antennas or radios blow on this phone. Back to Amazon it goes

[Q] Showing 13GB Storage? after factory reset? How can I recov

Okay, I will try to describe this as best as I can, to get some resolution to this issue without having to deal with more people that aren't/can't help. About 40 days ago, I bought the Galaxy Nexus from rogers, after loosing my previous phone to a car tire moving at about 55(Don't ask, long story, and not really on topic). It was nice, but as usual had the huge amount of useless garbage on it, so I got it rooted and removed the useless programs. about 10 days into having the phone I noticed that I would suddenly not be able to send out messages, but I could receive them, unless I rebooted the phone, and I would work for a random amount of time, then I wouldn't be able to text out again. eventually this turned into not being able to text at all, followed by random reboots a few days later, until I couldnt even use the phone as a phone or use mobile data. So I reverted the phone back to fully stock, and brought it back to Rogers, with literally minutes before my 15 day no hassle switch ( which I probably should have done, but my phone has become a necessary extension to my own brain (car accident) and I cannot go without it to remind me of various necessary things while I am out) and at that time they finally had thought "...hey, maybe your sim card was damaged, lets try a new one..." which, after yet another factory reset, brought the phone back to life. last night it started again, but this time happened over a period of hours, not days, and was almost impossible to revert back to stock. I eventually got it working by installing ICS 4.0.1 and letting it do a factory update, then calling rogers tech and having them do something remotely to get the phone working again. I checked the storage space, and it show (Just after a factory reset) 13.8GB, almost 80MB for apps leaving me with 13 GB. WTF? How does a STOCK factory ROM take up almost 3 GB of space? So I called Samsung directly, explained the situation, and told them that if they could walk me through the process of gaining access to the locked partition, or whatever the OS is on...and format the card to get my 16GB back and reflash the partitions with the stock OS on it, I would be more then capable, seeing that without the phone I am stuck at home using my computer as my reminder for things....They obviously refused, stating an "against policy" crap, and it would void the warranty, I don't them I didnt care about the warranty, I just want the phone I paid for. So IF there is SOMEONE on there that knows how to do this and could clearly put out step by step of how, I would be MORE than grateful for the help, like I said, right now the phone "works", but I am missing almost 3 GB for some reason, and I am trying to get that back without the need to be stuck in my own home like a prisoner for 4-6 weeks while I wait for them to do something I can do myself with proper instruction.
Phew, sorry for the long winded rant....I am more then a little displeased with both Rogers and Samsung....and when all I can do is look out my window to see what a nice day it is that I am missing, well...you get the idea. So if someone can save me the time and hassle, I would be more then willing to "buy the beer" as it were...
All the Gnexus have only 13gb out of the box. The OS takes up the rest. Nothing you can do unless you remove some of the stock apps.
13GB are the real space available, so thats normal
what a long post man..next time search on google
Yeah every device, computer, hdd, flashdrive, PS, XBOX, etc. is always less storage than what they advertise. Like the others said some of this storage is used up by the OS and preinstalled things.
I don't know what's wrong with you guys but I have 28GB usable storage after the OS. Clear out your /mnt/sdcard. Depending on how you did your factory restore that folder might not have been wiped.

13.33gb free under storage.
It was that way when I bought it and my 16gb nexus s was the same.
... I wonder why even Samsung themselves said it was wrong...probably would have said I effed something up, and try to charge me for it. Sadly I specifically asked for their most knowledgeable tech, and after 10 mins of getting the run around, I asked if he even knew what DOS was, to which he could only dumbfoundedly fumble to a non answer, and changed the subject....

Manufacturers measure HD space by powers of 1000. Operating systems measure HD space by powers of 1024.
Manufacturers: 1GB = 1,000,000,000
Operating System: 1GB = 1,073,741,824
So if Samsung says the HD is 16GB, the OS will show it as 15.625GB
So some of the discrepancy is because its being measured differently. And like others have pointed out, the rest is because of the space the OS needs.

Unique issue with crawling processor speeds

I've got an Epic 4G that hasn't had any hardware issues in the past. It's been converted to CWM5 MTD, and the rom I've been using without any major problems for the past several months is RandomKing's ThunderHawk 5.1 version of 2.3.6, along with and FC09 modem and his custom ShadowKernel. Today, after shutting down my phone as usual, it froze on the charging screen that comes up when you plug in a power source. I waited and waited, but finally took out the battery. When I attempted to restart, everything seemed to happen in slow motion. After 10 minutes, when the unlock screen showed up for the rom, everything froze again. I booted into CWM recovery (took like 6 minutes), and even the response to button presses there are slow. I've cleared cache, dalvik, fixed permissions, and am in the process of (again, extremely slowly) clearing data/reinstalling ThunderHawk.
Unfortunately, I've not been able to Odin to stock FC09 yet because the download mirrors for the file are so slow and unreliable. What the heck happened, and what should I do?
Wipe data, and both caches, reflash the rom and you should be good....hopefully

Not sure what that is, but if it's on the SD card, it's been wiped several times. Also, removed. I've Odined (no issues) to EL30 stock, EC05 stock, and FC09 stock... but the problem persists.
I've spent at least 60 hours on this phone over the last two years of owning it... and not to mess around with it - just to get it working. I'm sick and tired of the ****ty support Samsung has provided, sick of having to flash custom roms just to get things like the keyboard to work correctly, and sick of it all freezing up whenever I need it most (even with stock). I had it replaced for a fee, and not much changed.
I will never buy straight-up Samsung again. Up for an upgrade in two weeks - anyone know anything I can't find on engadget about the Moto Photon Q 4G LTE on Sprint? Looks nice, but I want to know if anyone has anything to say that would dissuade me from getting that, and instead opting for a Galaxy Nexus (*sigh* at least it's got Google software support) or the EVO 4G LTE (ugly HTC One X version for Sprint).

It has a smaller battery than both, better processor than gnex, same as evo lte. Do you like any ui in particular? Sense, aosp, or Motorola's UI? Screen is HD on nexus and evo, less sub pixels on nexus due to pentile, and more real color on evo. Obviously the photon has a keyboard, is that incredibly important to you? Try em all at sprint and see what you think. Gnex will have best software support. Its all up to what you prioritize.

Anyone elses Note 2 reboots or freezes occasionally?

Lately like the passed couple of months my Note 2 has been randomly rebooting like once every couple of days. Well, actually it doesn't exactly reboot its more like a sleep of death where for those that aren't familiar you go to turn the screen on and I don't know weather the phone went off or froze but it is non responsive. Like I said it really does not do it that often, not even really often enough for it to be an issue but I spent almost 800 dollars on this thing I don't want it rebooting or doing any of that.
I have had 3 smartphones in my day all being Samsung and they all did this starting with the Galaxy s2 which did it like 10 times a day. It was a really good phone despite that. Then I had the Galaxy s3 which would reboot occasionally, like this one not really enough for it to be an issue. Now with the note 2 I had had it since it dropped on sprint and when I first got it, it was rock solid. Now it is starting this. I am just wondering what anyone else thinks of the isssue. Am I the only one with the issue?
I am rooted and have been since like the second day I got the phone so I really can't say weather or not that has anything to do with it. It really does not seem to matter which ROM or Kernel I am on they all seem to do it every once in a while. All I can say is that my brother is an iPhone user and has had an iphone since the 4 and never once have any of his phones rebooted or locked up like this one does, and all my Samsungs have for that matter. I know its a little different since I am rooted running custom ROM's and all that but still for some reason when this thing does that it really irritates me, and I am just wondering if anyone might be able to help with the issue.

I have never had that happen. I'm running CM10.1 may or may not be the difference. Are you sure that the problem is not a app that you have installed? That would account for you having the same problem on different phones.

Hmm the only ones that I have had consistently with all those phones were the usual like facebook, twitter, titanium backup. I never messed with over or under clocking any of my phones or anything like that. Are there any apps that could detect a troublesome app that may cause a reboot? I have tried factory data resets but I always restore missing apps with titanium backup and never have just started fresh by re downloading everything, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Restoring with tibu across ROMs is frowned upon as it can cause issues.. I imagine its not good to restore across devices either.. Maybe starting with ur gs2 somethings didn't restore right and has been causing u problems ever since.. I would do a backup of ur current ROM, wipe everything and try starting fresh without restoring anything and see if that fixes ur problem.. Hope this helps..

Then what's the best way to restore apps across roms? Just start from scratch?

You can try ROM toolbox from the play store, but I usually just start from scratch when I switch ROMs and I definitely start from scratch when it comes to new phones.. Even if its a warranty swap for the same phone..

Well ya when I first got the note 2 and the gs3 I did start from scratch but over time I started just restoring apps using titanium backup. Ill bet that's why both phones were flawless for the first couple of months of ownership until I messed them up with my constant restores. Another thing I was thinking about is the way I said the gs2 would reboot the worst out of all the phones I ever had, when I got that one I had came from a HTC Evo 4g and when I put the sd card from the evo to the gs2 I didn't format it or anything. I am betting that had a lot to do with why that thing gave me so much trouble. I will try a complete factory reset, and just re download all my apps from scratch and see if that fixes the problem. I really appreciate the input.
I've hadn't had the sleep of death on the GN2. But I have had a the occasional freeze or reboot. Maybe one a month, probably less. It happens. Between running experimental apps or mods, and that developers developers--including Samsung or their contractors--can't test for every situation, it's not a big issue. Other than maybe having to do a battery pull, and divak and cache wipe in recovery.
As for the TB and restoring, especially on the first time run on the phone or rom, I find it best to install from scratch apps. I kept separate directories for different ROMs because of it. Plus, some apps just restore a bit off like Lookout and FlashPlayer; you can restore the app, but don't want to do the data. Some stuff, you can use the data restore after installing the app from Google Play or sideload with a new ROM without issue. Unfortunately, knowing with apps play nice in which situations is a lot of trail and error.

The freezing/rebooting issue plagued a few of my galaxy devices. My Epic 4G(GS1) and my GS2 would reboot/freeze/overheat all spontaneously and I never ran anything but stock root on either of them. I used tibu but never to restore from one device to another. My GS3 was fine for the few months that I had it with maybe a couple reboots but not enough that I would classify it as a persistent problem.
My N2 has rebooted spontaneously maybe 3 times since I picked it up on launch day. I've had it go into a unwakeable state a few times where pressing the power button won't bring up the lock screen forcing a battery pull. I've maybe had it freeze on me the same amount of times. Overall it's been the best phone I've ever had as far as stability goes. The AMC update was kinda wonky for the first few days after I applied it, causing my phone to lag a bit but it has since seemed to settle down and the phone runs like a champ.
I assume you're doing a tibu restore of app and data, maybe just try installing the app from the play store and then restore just the data from tibu and see if that makes a difference. I can only assume as others have said here that you have a rogue app that's causing your issues.
Good luck.
System apps are a no go. However I have restored all my apps from my gs2 and from rom to rom on the note and I have not had a single problem. But when in doubt just download fresh from playstore.

Thank you all for the replies, I have to say after doing a full wipe and installing all apps fresh everything seems to be working a lot better. No reboots or freezes, or SOD's in about 4 days (knock on wood)
my note 2 still keeps rebooting once a day.. n its really annoying!! please help
not rooted yet.. planning not to
Question
How do you warranty swap from one to a new phone is that possible if you a warranty from bestbuy.
Not sure if anyone is still experiencing problems but I'll share what I found in case someone else comes here looking for answers.
Is this possibly relevant to anyone's situation? The following thread talks about memory issues that certain models of the GN2 are prone to have.
