Root concerns and rom flashing - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time follower of the xda forums and new posting here.
Have the 10.5 verson of this tablet and love it!! However I rooted this device and had to unroot since some of the games I play cannot play on rooted devices. mainly the reason for rooting is to get the bloatware out of this and add the patch so apps can have access to the SD card (packing 128gb) and nothing else.
My question is if I was to flash a custom rom onto this device would I get the same errors when I tried running my games when my device was rooted? Or is there a back door to this?

Rooting question

Hi guys,
This is a very nooby question, but i was wondering exactly what benefit do i get for rooting my desire. Is rooting only required to install newer roms?
Also, if i were to simply root the desire would i lose any functionality such as bluetooth not working or wifi not working or the LEDs working?
I'm thinking of following the following guides for rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=672770
But before I do that, I just wanted to know what exactly is the point of rooting. any comments would be appreciated
Some benefits are:
Flashing Custom Roms
Marked Enabler ( If you cant get payed apps in your country )
You can Customize your phone a bit more
Flaws :
You loose your warranty...
Yea thats what i was wondering too.
I guess I wont root my phone for a bit, until the 2.2 roms are more stable, because i can already search for paid apps
thanks for the response
Even more nooby question.. what is this flashing custom ROM?
yea.. im new
Flashing ROMS enables you to customise the phone. On the ROM i installed i did not put facebook, twitter, friendstream, quick office and many other apps that come with the phone as i dont use them.
The main reason why i rooted the phone was to install a ROM with A2SD+ on it.
On standard android operating system the apps are installed on the internal memory which is only around 140mb, Basically A2SD+ installs all the apps on the SD card.
I have installed around 85 apps and still have around 102mb free.
P.s. i used this rooting guide, http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
But i did not use that way to install a2sd because i installed a2sd+ instead.

Lenovo A820 (I just want to root it, nothing else)

Hi guys
All I want to do is root the phone (not install a custom ROM).
All instructions I have read seem to lump rooting with a custom ROM. I have no interest in custom ROMs at this time (The manufacturer's seems good after I switched it to English, but rooting will give me more control over what stays and what goes since I need to clean it up more).
If it matters, the build number of my phone:
A820_S139_130422
Running Android 4.1.2
A few concerns
~~~~~~~~
* Do I need Lenovo's 'stock' ROM? All links to Lenovo's 'stock rom' seem to be on third-party websites (which concerns me). Is this not available from Lenovo's webiste? Is there no way to back up my current ROM?
* Is a 'one-click root' recommended? I'm not even sure if I need the manufacturers stock ROM saved or downloaded since I have seen some posts about 'one-click root' with some utility that can root MTK-chipset-based phones easily. Is this the approach I should be taking? (I don't know if the information is outdated or new or the best practice or the worst practice). Honestly, the more I read, the more my head wants to explode. Incomplete instructions....lots of concerns about back-ups, IMEI, camera not working properly, updates, etc. I want to avoid all the bad things.
* I don't care about Google Play store or *any* Google (NSA) stuff being installed on the phone. I truly couldn't care less about it. So again the manufacturer's firmware is fine for me, but I want to get rid of more silly apps they installed, not just disable them.
* I did manage to root a phone in the past (a Sony) but the instructions were completely different to this phone. I had to unlock the bootloader, then root, etc. Suffice to say, I'm a bit lost again even though I have read for hours.
In summary
* For now I just want to use the manufacturer's firmware but I would like root access for more control over what stays & what goes.
* My only interest is in rooting the device, not installing some developers custom ROM (as nice as they may be, I am not prepared to move to a custom ROM yet).
* I'm not sure if I need to back anything up, take my SD card out or sacrifice some goats to get this thing rooted. Or if it's a lot more simple than that, and I'm just overcomplicating things?
use Framaroot to root it... i successfully root, then flash recovery and repartition the internal memory using MobileUncle...
Hi michael9413
Thanks for your response.
I'm happy to say I rooted it some time after my post (but before you posted about Framaroot. I will keep this in mind for next time).
For those that are interested....it's possible to root the phone and keep the stock firmware on there.
For my case, I used:
Motochopper: Android root exploit (Windows version) v1.0 by Dan Rosenberg (@djrbliss)
Apparently this works for many MTK phones (like the Lenovo A820) and this was the 'one click root' I was reading about earlier.
Of course I had to download the Lenovo USB driver and do the usual things to get the phone detected. Anyway, I'm really happy that it's rooted since there was so much background stuff that I was keen to get rid of.
I still haven't removed the logon/logoff operator logos but I guess that's a job for new firmware. Maybe I'll do that eventually but for now I'm happy to just run it as it is, but with root.
Thanks for your response, and I hope this helps someone out there.
[Q] How easy for noob root? Pro 8.4
Galaxy Pro 8.4 NE3 BTU firmware
Total noob when it comes to rooting, so maybe someone can take the time to explain what it's all about to me? What benefits are there over the stock installation that you get? Do you need root access if you just surf the net, use Facebook , play games and email? Are there significant advantages in having a rooted device for the average user? ROM's? Is it easy to do? How do you recover things if it all goes wrong or you change your mind?
I think the last point worries me the most ... I'd :crying: if I bricked my tab!
I rooted SM-T320 using towelroot which is an apk file that is downloaded to your tablet/phone and run from the device ( www.towelroot.com ). No need to connect to you PC. Lots of info on this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157 . There is a lot of information and you should read it all. It took me less than 5 mins. to root my tab 8.4. A couple of small hiccups. SuperSu hung trying to disable Knox, but a reboot and running SuperSu, Knox was disabled with no problem. The other issue occurred with the reboot to disable Knox. There was no connection to the Play Store.For some reason the date had changed to an earlier date and time. When I reset the date and time I was able to access the play store again. The best news was that it appears that Knox was not tripped. My reason for rooting was to be able to fully access my external sd card and also be able to remove some of the Samsung Apps that I will never use and is taking valuable storage space as well as hogging memory. According to everything that I read in the above thread the chances of bricking your device is almost 0%. If you change your ming after you root you can use SuperSu to get back to a fully Un-rooted state.
[Q] GT-N5100 Italian 3g - to root or not to root
Hello fellow androidians
I am here because I desperately need to play Baldurs Gate on my Note 8 but Kies won't update my device - as far as I can understand, the Italian model is not exactly looked after and it's still running 4.1.2. So I won't be able to move stuff to the sd card for a while.
I have a few questions regarding this issue:
Can I safely root it?
And if I root it I can still use the base android or am I to flash a custom rom?
I would like to keep S Note which I use a lot, so any suggestion here is highly appreciated.
Will rooting mean loosing all the stuff I have in my galleries or will it be possible to root without a backup?
After years of Android use I collected a lot of memorabilia, which position and time of download is very precious to me. Call me ocd and you won't be wrong.
In case I will go for the root, will the tips provided here work on my model baseband version N5100XXBMC8?
I would be much happier if I had the possibility of updating to kit kat straight away, but this seems unlikely
How silly of me thinking Italian carriers would update my little treasure!
Normally you will not loose any data when you root your device. Base will not change. No need to flash a Custom Rom. So root your origunal 4.1.2 and finished.
Searching for advice.
Okay, so i have the infamous *sprint* version of the galaxy s3. It has the nj2 software and is completely stock save for i rooted it using kingroot app which installed something called purify instead of supersu and rootchecker has verified root access.
I also am under the belief that either kingroot or purify has "eaten" the knox garbage off my phone. I have no idea how to check this but i digress. What i am going to do with the phone is play games mostly online over wifi and store some music on it to play through my car stereo. I would prefer to go to 5.1 at minimum due to needs of some of the games i play but would like to hear from you all as to what rom i should use wether i need to install a custom recovery and etc. Wont be activating it as a phone it has a blacklisted esn so that aspect is not a factor. I await your advice and wisdom. Thank you all in advance and apologies for the long winded diatribe.
Well I would not call it infamous. It is a great phone, even today. Knox is in the bootloader and cannot be removed, no big deal. It doesn't do anything except prevent you from installing pre Knox firmware (jellybean,). And who would do that anyways right?
Kingroot is pretty bad, and has some shady practices (like sending phone info to Chinese servers). Normal root is just use odin on a pc to install custom recovery (twrp) then use recovery to install SuperSU.
To install a rom, you need custom recovery. Since you are rooted, you can just use flashify from the play store to install twrp.
Right now I'm running aicp 10 (lollipop 5.1.1) but the most recent nightlies are 6.0.1 marshmallow. You can get both on their site. CM12.1 is pretty stable and is also 5.1.1.
There are plenty of 5.1.1 roms. PAC rom has great battery life. Just look in the sprint s3 Android development and original development sections and you will find them.
