Okay, so i have the infamous *sprint* version of the galaxy s3. It has the nj2 software and is completely stock save for i rooted it using kingroot app which installed something called purify instead of supersu and rootchecker has verified root access.
I also am under the belief that either kingroot or purify has "eaten" the knox garbage off my phone. I have no idea how to check this but i digress. What i am going to do with the phone is play games mostly online over wifi and store some music on it to play through my car stereo. I would prefer to go to 5.1 at minimum due to needs of some of the games i play but would like to hear from you all as to what rom i should use wether i need to install a custom recovery and etc. Wont be activating it as a phone it has a blacklisted esn so that aspect is not a factor. I await your advice and wisdom. Thank you all in advance and apologies for the long winded diatribe.
Well I would not call it infamous. It is a great phone, even today. Knox is in the bootloader and cannot be removed, no big deal. It doesn't do anything except prevent you from installing pre Knox firmware (jellybean,). And who would do that anyways right?
Kingroot is pretty bad, and has some shady practices (like sending phone info to Chinese servers). Normal root is just use odin on a pc to install custom recovery (twrp) then use recovery to install SuperSU.
To install a rom, you need custom recovery. Since you are rooted, you can just use flashify from the play store to install twrp.
Right now I'm running aicp 10 (lollipop 5.1.1) but the most recent nightlies are 6.0.1 marshmallow. You can get both on their site. CM12.1 is pretty stable and is also 5.1.1.
There are plenty of 5.1.1 roms. PAC rom has great battery life. Just look in the sprint s3 Android development and original development sections and you will find them.

Now I want to get LiquidSmooth on my Galaxy S3 i747. I'm completely willing to follow all noob guides by myself namely http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802160]this one.
HOWEVER, since this is a phone from AT&T with a data plan, texting, and calling, and not some free Kindle with none of that, I'm extremely paranoid to do anything risking losing all these features. There's really no clear indication anywhere that this will or won't happen, since I assume this is either just extremely common knowledge, and most trouble shooting is about screwing up in general or bricking.
Rooting and flashing doesn't affect any if those things.
Think of it as a new operating system for your computer. New look, new feel same basic functions.

I have the same phone and there are a few things that are good to know that will help you and possibly keep you from making a bad choice.
Have you accepted the 4.3 OTA update from AT&T on the unit or...? If you have, then you have upgraded to a specific bootloader/modem and can no longer downgrade those items without causing problems.

If you did not take the update then you dont have these new items and your options are more open i guess.
First, your going to need to root your phone, without tripping the flash counter. There are lots of guides on how to do this, and it's pretty simple.
Secondly you will need to install a custom recovery such as ClockWorkMod or TWRP. I used CWM on my i747 and installed it using "ROM Manager" from the Play Store. It was amazingly simple and did the entire process for me.
Third you will need to choose the ROM you would like to try. There are a few different kinds, so happy hunting. I chose S3Rx and I love it. It's packed full of goodies and it seems that the Dev seems pretty good at answering any posts on his thread in this forum about the ROM.
Before you do any of that, you should verify what version your are running right now so you know what bootloader/modem you have, then go from there.
I just got back into this stuff myself and I love this phone. Good luck.

I had already flashed my phone after getting the verification from the last user. I was running 4.3, and am now running LiquidSmooth 3.0 Kitkat 4.4.2 now, with pretty much no problems at all. But thank you for your help.
I'm just wondering if it's safe to rollback the firmware on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5" to the previous one or if it causes some sort of conflict.
I want to do so because I've just installed the most recent one (T800ODD1ANK1 - India) and I can't root it using Cf-Autoroot posted here.

Nothing. I did it with Odin and it just reboots to the same old unrooted tablet. All is working fine as usual, but no root.
What botters me the most is that I had Xposed framework installed but now it has no functionality and all the modules I had installed don't work. I would install the previous firmware but I'm afraid of breaking something, with installing older software on top of newer one.
I was able to root the US version of that ROM (T800XXU1ANK1) using CF Auto Root from Chainfire:

As I predicted, since the changelist is different (your version has the same as the older one I had, with functioning root, but not with this one), no root.
Does anyone know if it is safe to install a previous version of the software? Like, for example, Cellular South ANK1 (with an older changelist).

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. It says I am rooted, but I'm not because root checker just keeps spinning and there isn't a SU# icon in my apps. I've done this with Odin about a million times before, for some reason on my new T800 (after I updated the software), it doesn't work.
Am I missing a step because I have the same version you have? Extract the file. Load the md5 file into AP. Hit Start. Wait for it to reboot. Right?

Im assuming you ran Super SU and updated the binaries or whatever it asks, or updated the app in playstore?
Ive done nothing different and root works fine.
I was thinking about another root alternative. I was thinking about downloading the supersu zip and save it to the device or sd card. Then flash twrp recovery with odin, then boot into recovery and flash the supersu zip to get root? Could that work as an alternative since it flashes root in the process?

I can't decide if I should root it now or update the software, and then root. After searching some, it appears that it doesn't matter whether I upgrade or not, but I can't seem to find if there is any advantage to updating it then rooting. Like, is it easier to get the latest firmware that way?

If i am correct, There should be stock custom roms available that are prerooted so you can flash over. As for an ota update, that is faster than being rooted then flashing lollipop rom.
Anyway we have a lollipop rom already built. Its smooth and most things are working. Its really cool and id rather use this than waiting for samsung to get the latest update out. Do you have the 10.5 in or 8.4 inch?

So, you are saying update OTA then root, unless I want to jump to Lollipop (which I do), which in that case it doesn't matter so I should just root and flash a lollipop rom?

Up to you If you want to jump to lollipop/CM12, just run flash Cfautoroot( with odin to root) then install twrp and flash the lollipop rom. There is a thread for cm12/lollipop in the development tab s section.
But wait! Rooting trips knox with voids your warranty. Same users has reported getting service from samsung for free of charge from defective units and some had to pay to get defective parts replaced by samsung. 50/50 chance. I took the risk and havent got a hardbrick or anything yet.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've rooted all 6 of my android phones that I've had, so I'm not too worried about voiding the watrranty. Judging by your reply it sounds like there are a lot of lemons out there for this device. Mine seems to be running okay, but I just can't take all the lag that I assume comes from TW and bloatware. My HTC One M8 with Lollipop seems faster and smoother than my Tab S at stock. Although after typing the last sentence, I put Nova on there and sped up all the animations and it is definitely light years faster than my One M8 now.
I think the answer to the original post is that the Su binary was installed, but the op didn't download then update Super su after rooting. You wont get full root until you do as there is no app to handle root requests.

it might just be that the Barclays app doesn't like your Chinese hardware/software but if you really want you can try to reflash the stock rom which is now available from elephone. there are two versions, 20150719 & 20150725 I believe from here:-

Did you ever solve this? I bought the phone as it has dual Sims and I didn't want to carry around 2 phones! Without being able to use the Barclays app, I'm having to carry my old phone anyway. Any help would be appreciated

I've been having the same issue and here's my findings.
If you try stock rom (whatever version), Barclays apps will never work despite Root Checker says it's not rooted.
However, in another thread, I was pointed to an app called Simply Unroot and I tried it and initially it did not work.
The dev of Simply Unroot spent hours trying to figure out why Barclays app thought it was rooted but eventually, he suggested I try the FlyMe ROM.
So I put on Philz recovery, put on FlyMe, I used Simply Unroot to unroot it (since it's full-on rooted initially) and WHAM, after a reboot, the Barclays apps work fine.
I don't have enough knowledge to say why FlyMe/Philz is ok.
I don't know if it's the ROM/Recovery combo that fixes it.
I did try stock and Eragon with Philz and the Barclays apps don't work on there.
Either way, Simply Unroot app/service is fantastic.
It's a shame it's the FlyMe ROM that works since it's not very good.
Does anyone know WHY Stock ROM is seen as Rooted by Barclays whereas FlyMe is not?

So it would seem that FlyMe whilst based on stock ROM doesn't have this - a good option to have. Perhaps some of it is based on the earlier 'un-rooted' stock ROMs?

The FlyMe ROM is based on the ROM for another phone altogether... er.. Meizu was it? That's why it doesn't have any ability to use the fingerprint scanner.
It's just really annoying though... banking apps aren't the only apps that have this kind of over-zealous check... there are other enterprise apps that have it.
I don't understand why the stock ROM can't be made so it is 'fully' unrooted yet have it easy to root later on.
£130 for a phone that is super fast and does everything flagships can do but I can't use it/recommend it since it can't run apps that most people consider necessary.

Phone unlocked from Rogers (Canada) carrier and rooted using Kingo App.
Have installed Root checker, Rom Manager, Busy Box, Super Su and have downloaded the firmware[ I747MVLUFOB3_I747MOYAFOB3_RWC.zip. ] to have on hand.
I rooted the phone because everything I had read to date [which may not have been enough] told me rooting was necessary. Would like to install a more up to date android than 4.4.2, possibly 5.0 or 6.0. Also, to get rid of Apps I never use. Because I see so much in my reading about Cyanogenmod, I thought I would start with 12 and go from there.
Have been trying to follow steps at the link for https wiki cyanogenmod org/w/d2att_Info which I believe is the correct one for my model number, which has led me to the link at https wiki cyanogenmod org/w/Install_CM_for_d2lte where it tells me that:

Firstly, I am just wondering,
1a] since I still have the original firmware installed, could I just unroot with the same Kingo App I used to root the phone?
1b] Would/Can I still use Rom Manager to do my system backup?
Secondly, if it is not too technical an explanation, why is it that the Rogers(Canada) i747m does not need nor is it recommended to be rooted? It almost sounds as if it already is or maybe rogers firmware is weak and easily hacked?
Thirdly, just a comment on my part, as interesting and good as this whole process is, it seems that rooting and installing new firmware can be a bit of a Pandora's box and the people who are developing things to do so are very diligent and creative.
I am still determined to make this happen with my i747m and am thankful for people on this forum and others to advise me.
To install a custom rom, you need to install a custom recovery to install the custom rom.
Rooting gives you access to the rom system files, similar to gaining administrative privilege on a Windows or Mac machine.
Rooting is not required before installing a custom recovery or custom rom.
I have never heard that that the Rogers i747m should not be rooted. For security and stability purposes, rooting any phone is not recommended by many people.
I am not familiar with the program that was used to root the phone but each program usually has an option to unroot.
I am not 100% certain as I haven't used a rom manager in years but I don't think the option to create nandroid exists.

So I would like to root my LG G3 (D855) and install custom rom, so here are few questions about it.
1) I would like to make full backup of my current rom (all apps, settings, everything included) in a case if I will have to return to stock rom. How do I do it?
2) I know how to root my phone and install custom rom, which one would you recommend me? I would like to install android Noughat 7.1
3) after installing that rom how do I root it once again? Last time when I rooted and installed custom rom, seems like my phone wasn't rooted anymore after installing it
4) on that custom rom, I would like to play Pokemon Go, which requiers unrooted phone (even if my phone wasn't rooted, or at least i think it wasn't. I was still unable to play pokemon go, was it due custom rom?). So any method to play Pokemon GO on that custom rom.

Just don't install LineageOS 14.1 (Nougat) or one based on it as if your device is rooted, you will have problems trying to get root back! I have tried EVERY method on here and recommended and NOTHING! GRRR!
AFAIK, Pokemon Go will work on a rooted phone. I managed to use it on my rooted S7 last year. I don't know where you heard this, or perhaps, they have changed it recently so you can't..
