Kernel question - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

This might be a stupid question, but would the kernels for the L900 and N7105 be the same or compatible? Could one use a kernel from a N7105 on a L900 or vise versus?
Thank you
Josh

No they are not interchangeable. Sprint is unlike most of the note 2 devices. We have an extra partition mccblk01p17 which is our data partition (internal sdcard). All other versions have mccblk01p16 as the data partition but on sprint that partition is used to get service. Using a non sprint kernel will cause you to have no service and no data partition.
Above is the major reason not to use a non sprint kernel but there are a few other minor issues. You can lose spen functionality, touchscreen issues, and random reboots due to small hardware differences.
Hopefully this not only answers your question but gives you a slightly better understanding of your device.

Forgive me if this is a ridiculous question. I have been rooting/modding since I got my first Android but I have always had the same carrier. So can someone explain what would happen if we flashed a ROM from the Samsung galaxy s 2 forum on to an eg4t? Is it just hardware differences that keep things like that from being possible or is there some other reason.

Very bad things. There have been reports of people not even being able to get their phones into download mode to ODIN stock .tars (a true brick).
Just don't do it to be safe.

Flashing ROMs from the International SGS2 or a another variant won't work. It's due to a number of reasons but long story short, safe yourself the trouble and don't even try. I doubt you would permanently brick you device (I read the comment above me and looks like there is a chance of BRICKING your device)..
Our Epic Touches have different radios (CDMA vs. GSM), WiMax, etc. so the kernel, ROMs and modems are different..

U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S2

I was just wondering if I am able to root and install a custom rom from this forum. I was told on the SGS2 forum that this forum would be best. Is it true?
Thanks in advance

Short answer - probably not easily if at all.
Even if there are not any technical differences between the devices - which I do not know enough on the US Cellular GS2 to say - it is often difficult to do what you want. I saw this with my previous device, the LG Optimus S (Globally Optimus One).
Now in some cases I have seen devs be able to take a build for one phone and easily port it over to a similar phone (ex. Optimus S/V/C) versus having to start from scratch. It will depend on how much HW/SW differences exist between the two devices.
Hope that helps!

DO NOT FLASH OUR RADIOS. DO NOT FLASH ROM/KERNEL unless you know it is safe.
Epic Touch 4G contains 4G. US Cellular Galaxy S2 doesn't. This is NOT a case of same phone, different branding on the same CDMA type network (Samsung Vitality/Samsung Admire)
However, if you are not rooted, people seems to have figured out how to root it using Epic 4G Touch methods: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526093

hey man here is a stable mod and a few guides to fix a few things.
Get your rom from here
facebook fix here
Yes we can flash their ROMs, hell we have even flashed their modems before! However do a LOT of research before you do so, and don't be afraid to ask for help from another US Cellular user on here. Also to get a few things like MMS, and the carrier branding to be correct the ROMs require a few basic edits.
There is plenty of support for this device

If you are a cyanogenmod user than here are cm9 nightlies for your phone:

They are exactly the same as the sprint version just with wimax stuff removed and a few us cellular settings.

International I9505 Rom working on T-Mobile S4 M919!!

So I went ahead and flashed the i9505 Wanam Rom from here and it works great on my M919. The rom doesn't have a modem so I figured it would be safe and sure enough it was. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283194
No wipe is required either. I simply flashed it using CWM and I now have a GT-I9505 model with all T-Mo bloatware gone! I really like the blue dialer on this too!
You will get reboot notifications, to remove that simply download "Bloatware Freezer" from Playstore and freeze the app called SEAndroid. That should take care of it.
Oh man... Fully functional though? I'd imagine Wifi Calling would be a goner, not that I ever use it anyway...

No Tmo features...obviously.
Yes, a lot of people don't realize their options for goodies go beyond just the specific m919 forum. Check out the general international S4 I9505 forums. It's were I spend most my time.
Development is lagging for the m919 variant. There are only a few ROMs & choices, with slow updates.... and plenty of time has passed since release, so I'm not sure how much better it will get. It's the one negative part about Sammy devices....fragmentation of the same model. It would be nice to see a majority of elite Devs working on the same model....like the One.
MANY of the mods/themes/ROMs etc...work great with our device. The radio is the only difference between various 9505 models.
Cheers!
Awesome. But who puts a modem in custom roms now days? Lol Now that I can see that this phone is actually the same hardware as the international we can have roms from there too..... In this case if a leak of a newer android update comes out we can have it port over. And not wait for tmobile,,,
If that the case than AT&T, VERIZON, AND SPRINT can be ported all like on the s3 but the fun part is the even international too
I hope this all works so far I'm very happy with wicked but more options are never a bad thing
Sent from my SGH-M919
Wow I had no idea I could use i9505 roms. I thought i may be able to but wasn't sure. Awesome.
Working great so far. Only problem I noticed so far was constant notification from SEAndroid. I simply freezed it using bloatware freezer from Playstore.

lol give us more time, mate. would you rather we release untested ROMs? i'm sure there are a number of us floating around here that have a ROM we can put out right this second but it is good practice to test first and ensure there are no issues. this can take a little bit. i myself am in testing phase. maybe the phone has been out a while, but i personally have only had one for 2 and a half weeks. a lot of stuff in the other sections will be ported over. i have to get a good working and stable base out first before i start adding in more tweaks that will seemingly overwhelm most typical users.
also, please be weary of flashing an entire ROM from i9505 section. if there are CSC bits contained within it, you won't have a signal like you're supposed to.
Totally agree with the previous poster. These things take time to make.
With that said this is good news. Hopefully, we can get a dev to port these over with TMO features & Csc files.
I know AT&T GN2 had an awesome dev that ported Int GN2 over with options for TMO, AT&T & Canadian carriers.

Any ROM made for I9505, you can use. Make sure the ROM doesn't have a modem baked into it (ROMs usually don't, but you must make sure). You will then have to download and app called "Bloatware Freezer" from Play Store and freeze the system app called 'SEAndroid'
thank for the tip mate

Works great, even support video call like you see in the Korean dramas. Too bad no US provider supports that
Any way if we manually added or flashed the T-Mobile bloat we could use visual voicemail at least?
Also do you feel that the battery life and overall performance is better in these ROMs?
Can we still use 4g/ 4g lte with these ROMs automatically or do we need to mess with the APN to a certain extent?
Thank you. I am considering flashing because I'm loving those ROMs and themes in the international forums especially that dark android theme that doesn't work well with our phones

.....luck is irrelevant.....
Not a single developer on this site. ..that I've been able to find. ..is advising users to flash roms not intended for their respective device. ..
Do you suppose that is luck as well ??
I submit that you have not pushed your device far enough (yet) with incompatible software to do any permanent damage. ..
But if you believe luck will carry you through then by all means. ..proceed. ..
I choose the years of experience our development team has provided. ..
And the code they rely on. ..
If Verizon devices and ATT devices were the same. ..or compatible. ..then our section would include them together. ..
I congratulate you for your bravery...but would advise those users reading this to think twice before attempting the installation of Verizon software on the ATT device. ..as you may not be so lucky. ...
I encourage the advancement of our devices. ..but I ultimately fail to find any possible benefit in what you are doing that outweighs the risks associated with your endeavors. ..
Please enlighten me...
In the meantime. ..I'll continue the use of approved software. ..as I'm not willing to waste $799.00 trying to beat proven science. ....
Best of luck to you. ..g

As long as you make sure you flash an att modem and kernel you will have no issues, actually the kernel would even work just dont ever flash the wrong modem or you will have a hard brick. Ive done this several times myself and have never had an issue. It was the same when I had my s3, you could flash any verizon or sprint rom as long as you flashed proper modem and kernel before rebooting. I used to love jelly beans on my s3, was the best rom I tried so I will be flashing this as soon as download is done :good:

It's true though, I've flashed many other Roms from different carriers..Not many people are even aware from those methods that it does work. Am not saying all of them, but the ones I have tried were successful.
Be careful posting such advice out in the wild ...as first time flashers may get confused as too which rom, radio, and kernel combinations are safe and which are not..
Thus we rely on our developers to package files specific to our devices ...and the safest methods to incorporate them...
I suggest that if your plan is to mix and match software's on this or any device ...it would be prudent to handle those conversations in the form of private massages ...until a proven method is posted ...
I've seen 5 device bricks this week ...and in 3 of those cases the user was confused as to whether or not the correct software and methods were used...
Threads holding names like "use Verizon software on ATT"...only serve to add confusion in the minds of our user base...
Bricks don't just happen ....they are created when users make mistakes by either not following directions ...or using incompatible software ...or a combination of the two ...(add confusion here )...
As stated above ....only some combinations will work ...not all...even when using the posted Verizon software....so if you truly want to protect your reputation and avoid sending folks down to brickville....then post which software combinations are safe only after confirmation from a defined and listed user base ...which will allow contact between users should problems arise ...
Right now it's only ..."this works ..so run it"...
So far...no one has posted here claiming that these methods bricked a device ....but the odds are stacking up every day that someone will ...
Please provide testing results with a clearly defined list of working software for users to draw from ...and how to install it properly...
And those users acting as testers should be included in the thread as well ....
And the most important statement of all should be the first line in the thread ...
"Use this software at your own risk"..!!!
I'm not trying to cause issues in your thread ...I'm simply trying to protect you ...and the many devices that your thread will influence...g

Man, a bunch of timid little girls... This is XDA. It was BUILT on peole doing things they weren't supposed to do & trying things new that nobody else would try. How do you think itsme developed all the tools that nearly every kitchen for the last decade has been based on was created? The site is XDA developers & until the iPhone & the influx of cheap smartphones, all the members were developers, serious hobbyists or lurkers. What anyone tries to do or decides not to do is up to them. You wouldn't spend $200,000.00 on timber & hardware to build your dream house if you have never swung a hammer in life, same applies here. It is common sense & people with it learn before they do or are willing to take risk & learn as they do. Heck, back in the day, I bought a lot of six Kaisers just to brick, so that I could work with Jocky on a way to revive bricks, i.e. FrankenKaiser...
In this particular instance, the device are essentially identical. That opens the door for a lot of cross compatibility. Manufacturers like Qualcomm are starting to produce chips (radio) that support numerous bands. Some of the latest have the ability to support as many as 23 different LTE bands. This is good for them, less revisions equal less production costs, & it is good for us as well, since it means more cross compatibility.
Really, Samsung lately has been making devices pretty compatible & unless you are messing with the boot or modem partition, it is pretty hard to make a brick.
Of course, the first thing anyone should ask themselves is WHY THEY ARE DOING THIS? & maybe watch this video:

Omega rom

Updated my earlier post, but you can flash any n9005 rom in this thread
a little bit out of topic but what are the advantages and disadvantages of flashing a rom that is not for our note? are there any risks other than the obvious "you are responsible for what you do to your device" or "warranty is now void" risks?
1. Advantages are more variety of roms to choose from, the international roms are updated a lot quicker than USA versions(because it was released over there first, I believe latest firmware over there is mj7). Some roms on the N9005 are pre-debloated for you (HAL room is 700mb rom! Omega has same slimness as HAL just got to choose what you want uninstalled/installed thru aroma).
2. Disadvantages, not many really as long as your only flashing the N9005 compatible LTE note 3 and not the incompatible N9000 (octocore exnyos).

Also, some of the features that the carrier offers are sometimes not supported, such as WiFi Calling.

It's a long known issue that WiFi calling won't work with ROMS developed outside of a T-Mobile ROM base. I'm not blessed with enough of an understanding of how it works, but ever since my HTC Vision (G2) I've read about WiFi calling not working on other ported or international ROMs.
Aside from that feature, everything else could technically work. Personally, I like the WiFi calling and prefer to maintain it on my phone's ROM.

Everything works great! Here's what I got:
Running HAL 9000
Saber Kernel
I did need to add the LTE APN once i booted the rom up.
other than that, this is awesome!

While promising, no it doesn't work on other networks or carriers.

So dam frustrated. I can't seem to download that patch to get all the radios working. Keep getting a .exe file that's only 300 or so kb. Is the patch posted anywhere else. Stupid false links all over that page. Whoever thinks they can do business by tricking you into pressing the wrong link is a f'ing idiot.

Yeah wifi-calling will never work on international roms. Which is fine because wifi-calling causes more issues than it fixes. The majority of my calls get dropped and it breaks messaging more often than not. PITA.
