U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S2 - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was just wondering if I am able to root and install a custom rom from this forum. I was told on the SGS2 forum that this forum would be best. Is it true?
Thanks in advance

Short answer - probably not easily if at all.
Even if there are not any technical differences between the devices - which I do not know enough on the US Cellular GS2 to say - it is often difficult to do what you want. I saw this with my previous device, the LG Optimus S (Globally Optimus One).
Now in some cases I have seen devs be able to take a build for one phone and easily port it over to a similar phone (ex. Optimus S/V/C) versus having to start from scratch. It will depend on how much HW/SW differences exist between the two devices.
Hope that helps!

DO NOT FLASH OUR RADIOS. DO NOT FLASH ROM/KERNEL unless you know it is safe.
Epic Touch 4G contains 4G. US Cellular Galaxy S2 doesn't. This is NOT a case of same phone, different branding on the same CDMA type network (Samsung Vitality/Samsung Admire)
However, if you are not rooted, people seems to have figured out how to root it using Epic 4G Touch methods: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526093

hey man here is a stable mod and a few guides to fix a few things.
Get your rom from here
facebook fix here

Yes we can flash their ROMs, hell we have even flashed their modems before! However do a LOT of research before you do so, and don't be afraid to ask for help from another US Cellular user on here. Also to get a few things like MMS, and the carrier branding to be correct the ROMs require a few basic edits.

There is plenty of support for this device
http://teamuscellular.com/Forum/forum/255-galaxy-s-ii-development/

If you are a cyanogenmod user than here are cm9 nightlies for your phone:
http://goo.im/devs/Shabbypenguin/R760-Nightlies
They are exactly the same as the sprint version just with wimax stuff removed and a few us cellular settings.

Forgive me if this is a ridiculous question. I have been rooting/modding since I got my first Android but I have always had the same carrier. So can someone explain what would happen if we flashed a ROM from the Samsung galaxy s 2 forum on to an eg4t? Is it just hardware differences that keep things like that from being possible or is there some other reason.

Very bad things. There have been reports of people not even being able to get their phones into download mode to ODIN stock .tars (a true brick).
Just don't do it to be safe.

Flashing ROMs from the International SGS2 or a another variant won't work. It's due to a number of reasons but long story short, safe yourself the trouble and don't even try. I doubt you would permanently brick you device (I read the comment above me and looks like there is a chance of BRICKING your device)..
Our Epic Touches have different radios (CDMA vs. GSM), WiMax, etc. so the kernel, ROMs and modems are different..

[IDEA] Port international firmware/ROM's to Sprint Note 2?

Considering the similarities between the domestic variants of the Note 2 and their international counterparts, would anyone be willing to test some of the success that the folks over in the AT&T forum have had with porting the international N7100/N7105 firmware/ROM's over to the Sprint Note 2
Check out these two threads over in the AT&T forum and see what you all think:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
The basic gist of the procedure is to use a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP to flash a stock N7100/N7105 firmware, and then flash your carrier specific modem/kernel.
Why would anyone want to do this? Well, for starters, you would benefit from built-in stock-supported tethering, and a few other features that carriers disable (YMMV). But mainly this means that the domestic versions of the Note 2 can benefit from the development of the international versions! So, when the latest version of Android comes out for the rest of the world, we aren't stuck here waiting for our carrier to catch up to everyone else...
So what do you all think? Anyone willing to try?
Clarification: Just so everyone is on the same page here, I want to stress that, while this process is successful on both the AT&T and T-Mobile GN2's, this is VERY dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I would NOT recommend anyone try this unless you are confident in your abilities to recover from a brick situation.
Again, if you are even REMOTELY interested in trying this out on your own, don't even think about bothering with it unless you absolutely know what you are doing! I take no responsibility for any bricks that come from someone trying this without the proper experience and know-how. You have been warned!
it works on the ATT variant because it and the international are both GSM. We are CDMA, i doubt that it would be as easy. Using verizon ROMs might be a different story though.

See, I'm not so sure. At least this time around, the radio's are pretty much the only major differences, and those can be governed by the kernel and modem.bin, so if anyone's willing to try it, it could be well worth a try!

This thread is dangerous, dont normally say that, but PLEASE dont encourage (or even put the idea in peoples heads) that they should flash something for a different phone. What you described is NOT porting. Your asking for a brick flashing different firmware. And why dont YOU try it then get back to us....on your computer, cus your phone will be a paperweight

Partitions aren't completely. They are almost identical. You just need to flash the OS properly.

Not recommended for sure. At least for beginners. You can flash their stock ROMs is you flash properly flash them and make sure there's no radio and that you use your stock kernel.

There has to be, at least, a dev developed tool that will convert 1 notes rom to another. That way a dev can create a rom, then easily spread it to all devices.
I can't imagine making a script or modifying a kitchen to output for the slight differences between phone would be that difficult.

You know, I'm not even a Sprint subscriber. I don't own the Sprint GN2. I have absolutely nothing to gain by sharing an idea with all of you. If you think it's a stupid idea, fine, but there's no reason to be an @$$hole about it either.
Now this could turn out one of two ways. Either you're right, and it was a stupid idea, for not working on CDMA GN2's, but at least we tried and now we know for sure -OR- my idea works, maybe with a little finagling, but still possible, and now (with some help) I've just opened up the door for domestic users to take advantage of the development being done around the world; something you've rarely, if ever, been able to do... You're welcome.
So yeah, don't be an @$$hole.

Should he lie and say your idea is good? would that make you feel better? It won't work. The partitions between the Note variants are different. It not the same as the S3's. Just because you don't understand that doesn't make him an asshole. Also if you are going to curse people out, have the balls to actually spell it correctly

Ask anyone that has ever flashed a rom from a different carrier how it worked out for them... Only result I have ever heard of is brick. So forgive me for not kissing your ass because of your stupid idea. The people that are capable of porting roms have either already thought of it and it's not that easy, or its out of the realm of possibility at this point. So all your doing is putting useless thoughts into the heads of people who won't know any better and end up effing their phones. So go suck a boner

Virgin Mobile E4GT

Virgin Mobile's new S2 is actually just an E4GT with VM branded software. VM runs on Sprint towers, but if we flash your roms certain things won't work. I'm here to ask if any devs would be willing to help us. Our forum is on phandroid, but most of you guys are on xda. Like I said, your roms will boot but certain things (mms/4g/3g) won't work. If anyone would be willing to help us, please contact me on xda or find our forum on android forums (it's under "Samsung Galaxy S2 4G"). Thanks and merry Christmas.

One thing I'm going to experiment with after activating the GN2 today is a quick flash of CSC data. The goal would be that you flash this image in Odin after a build and it will apply the correct settings.
Now keep in mind I won't be able to test beyond flashing as this phone will be deactivated. But if it works - and I should be able to see what the settings are at least - I'll put it out there for others to test.
Until then the best way to get around it is to modify the settings manually. Sprint, Boost and Virgin are the same h/w, all the issues you are experiencing are settings based only.
I'm quite curious about this... Will the Sprint rom work for this phone? Or would I lose some kind of functionality?
I'm about to recieve Virgin Mobile's S2 and I don't want to run into any kind of issues
It will just gotta change MMS settings

Should just be a mmsc setting change
Sprint touchwiz doesn't have files to work with virgins mms. That's why there's no tw fix yet, only cm10. You can read more about it in one of the mms fix threads, but I can't remember which one. I'd expect it to be okay with the virgin Mobile rom sextape is going to release soon though. :fingerscrossed:

There are many options for the at&t branded s3's. Just check out the Android development and original android development forums. Roms range from touchwiz based to more custom source code based. Know what you're doing before you flash and make sure to only flash a rom for your device (not i9300, etc)

Shouldn't have too many issues as you would just need have the straight talk APN to use.
Really take your pick and look around and see what you like
Thanks for the input. I'm familiar with flashing roms. I've been using a rooted inspire 4g for 4 years now. The touch wiz. Is all new to me though because I love sense Roms.
The reason I asked about two roms is because I saw a mod in the forums with an aroma installer that would make quick work of themeing my gf's phone all pink.
She gets a kick out of me rendering my phone useless after a vigourus bout of themeing but I don't think she would find it that funny if it was her phone out of cammition while I restored a back up

Even though I agree with this, some ROMs in the Verizon and T-Mobile section are universal and some do say sprint. I have heard if you flash another us carrier s3 ROM (NOT THE INTERNATION ONE) ANOTHER US CARRIER, Rom, let's say t mobile ROM on Verizon phone, the worst that happens is data won't work and a bunch of force closes, but won't hard brick since it has the same hardware.
DONT QUOTE ME ON THAT! Just say in what I think I heard. Don't go flashing other carrier ROMs (OR INTERNATION ONES) for no reason.
If the OP says universal and it says compatible with sprint, do it if you feel comfortable. Personally I wouldn't until I know someone else is running it.

I know it's safe to flash because it is a universal rom, and specifically states support for the Sprint variant. I wasn't trying to see if it was safe but rather ask if it was stable since universal Roms tend to work well for the device they work on and not so well for the other supported phones. I appreciate all of your warnings but I already know not to flash stuff from other forums unless specifically made for sph-l710.
