{help} Returned to Stock cant flash OTA - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i Restored my phone to the original stock Rom from my nandroid backup then flashed the recovery back and then locked the Bootloader.
once i booted into android i downloaded the OTA for Lollipop but when the phone reboots it starts the install but then goes to recovery and comes up with Installation aborted.
HTC One M8
Orange UK
S-on
I have attached some pictures of what happens and my bootloader.
any ideas on whats happening and how to solve it?
FIX: I downloaded the Update - transferred to PC - unpacked it - opened firmware - copied the Recovery.img to the phone.
I then unlocked the bootloader and flashed the recovery via fastboot . then did the update and all worked.
No need to relock bootloader!
Cheers

That's showing that you're trying to apply the Orange OTA to the unbranded EU model. The message tells you what it expects and what you have in it's place so your backup isn't right

The Nandroid i have is the original os that was shiped with the phone after i flashed CWM i did a backup and that is what i restored.

You can't use EU recovery for Orange
After OTA downloaded, select install later.
Copy OTA zip from Internal Storage\Download folder to PC
Open OTA zip with 7-zip, open firmware.zip extract recovery.img
Use this recovery.img

The other option is to use the recovery that you should be on from the previous OTA, which you can find here:
https://mega.co.nz/#!tVsiyQKZ!21FvMXKN1nxr83u-4dF7mNcXQ1RCWqkkZLA2q_tvKhg
(You'll have to extract it from the firmware.zip in the OTA file and flash it in fastboot)

Great :good::good:
For your info and others that reading this thread ... there is no need to relock bootloader when doing OTA ... leave it unlocked when it is already unlocked.

OTA upate (rooted, original ROM)

Hi
I haven't found anything exactly specific to my situation, I hope I haven't missed it and that someone can help.
I have rooted my M8 but haven't flashed a ROM so I'm still running HTC's original system but the recent update 1.54.401.10 won't update, it boots to clockwork mod, says installation aborted and to send the error file to Phil3759 (which I can't as he doesn't accept PMs). Is there a way around this, or can you not use updates if you're rooted even though you've not changed the ROM?

You need to flash your stock recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2707877 Grab your recovery and
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
Then update and flash back your custom recovery when finished. If you have any apps frozen you need to unfreeze them before update.

The portion I quoted is your problem. OTA's won't work with custom recoveries. You'll have to restore the stock recovery... There's a thread with a list of stock recoveries for almost every carrier/model you should reference.

None of the downloads on the recovery thread I've tried seem to work. I will leave it for now the update doesn't seem massively important. If it gets to that point I can always get into custom ROMS. Thanks though
Extract recovery.IMG from firmware.zip from ota file. Flash that and you should be good to go

What do you mean they don't work? In what way?
1. Download this recovery - 1.54.401.5 and rename it recovery.img (not recovery.img.img)
2. Boot phone into fastboot and connect to PC
3. Flash recovery using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
4. Reboot phone
5. Apply OTA update

I had the exact same situation as yours and I was also struggling through the same issue and this is how I resolved it.
Download the new OTA update zip file on your PC (1.54.401.10). You can download it from here:
https://www.hightail.com/download/ZUczc0w1MHdFc0lLSk5Vag
Then, from your PC, while your HTC ONE M8 is connected, run the following commands:
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip <<-- change the name with the actual firmware filename
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip <<-- yes, you'll have to do it twice, don't ask me why but this is what i've read on different forums
fastboot reboot
Now, once you reboot your phone, it'll still show you the old software revision. But, the good part is, now you'll be able to install the OTA using the pop-up you see on the notification bar.
Please let me know if this doesn't work and I'll be happy to help you further.
Good luck!

Hi all,
My m8 is flashed with Viper 1.6. I however decided to try to OTA update, to get the newest radio etc. I am however unable to flash this.
I flashed the stock recovery, however the update does not succeed via fastboot. Error 99 something.
Are you able to guide me how to do this update. Is it at all possible, when not running a stock rom?

You have the OTA downloaded, but can't flash it I presume?
Transfer the OTA download to your PC and open it with 7zip (it's free).
Find the firmware.zip and unzip it. Extract the recovery.img from that, put it into your fastboot folder and hook up your phone. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Hello,
Sorry to but in; If you flash the OTA recovery img onto a phone that has not been updated to that OTA will there be any issues with the phone booting up?
In other words if my phone is on v 1.19 with TWRP and I flash the recovery img from the OTA for v1.19 --> 1.20 will there be a problem?
What happens if you flash the entire firmware.zip for OTA v1.19 --> 1.20?
Does S-ON, S-Off play a role here?
Thank you

HTC One M8- Need Recovery_3.29.161.9.img

Help....need recovery_3.29.161.9.img please?
hi,
As the title suggests I am looking for HTC one M8 recovery_3.29.161.9.img to return to stock recovery.....I have tried all the links but they are down. I managed to install 3.29.161.5 recovery.img but it wont let me install the OTA.
My device is 3.29.161.9 main
and the Cid is VODAP001
Any help would be appreciated!
Hey there,
Sorry but what was the error message you received when you tried OTA on 3.29.161.5 recovery?

You don't really need 3.29.161.9 recovery
After download OTA, select install later
Copy OTA zip from internal storage\Download folder to PC
Open OTA zip with 7-zip you'll see firmware.zip
Open firmware.zip you'll see recovery.img - extract this one out
Install the extracted recovery.img then proceed to install OTA
Done
EDIT : you're doing OTA to 4.19.161.2, right ?
Just use 4.19.161.2 recovery
Get it from my thread linked in my signature

Hi, yes, as I stated in my original post I have tried 3.29.161.5 also but when I tried to install the OTA update the signature verification check throws out an error and it wont install. I think the only recovery that will work for me is 3.29.161.9.
There was a link on here for it on a mega host site but it says the file has been removed so was hoping someone might be able to send me an updated link.
I have even looked for firmware files containing the recovery I need but to no avail.

You don't need to relock bootloader when doing OTA. Don't know why people keep doing this.
Read my edit above.
If the OTA won't install on 4.19.161.2 recovery then it's not recovery issue. It's the ROM issue, not stock enough.

Just wanted to say a big Thank you for the help, all sorted now . I think my issue was a bad recovery.img of 4.19.161.2 as it wouldn't install first time.
Followed your instructions and I'm back on stock, un-rooted with OTA back
Just wanted to say also, I came from skydragon(used it for months) and think its an awesome Rom(only reverting back to stock to sell on) and I am hoping a version comes available for HTC one M9+ which I currently own.
please delete thread if needed!
Thanks again

How to back to stock and get back ota

Hi. I'm now on unlocked htc 10 with s-on. How can I back to clean, stock, oryginal condition? I tried to flash stock via ruu.exe and adb but it is failed. Relocking bootloader nothing helped. I tried some things but i got lost in this many theards. I will be very grateful if somebody help me and show me instructions. Actually i'm on m firmware.
boot into fastboot & paste the command below
copy the results & post here (remove imei from the post)
PHP:
fastboot getvar all
As you mentioned flashing the leaked nougat ruu ill assume you're on 401.x FW with the lastest ruu being 1.90.401.5
1. install twrp, restored untouched system & boot image, flash stock recovery
2. s-off downgrade to 1.90.401.5 , relock bootloader & run ruu
i see you edited your post
1. Rename zip to 2PS6IMG.zip
2. Copy zip onto sd card
3. Boot into download mode (download mode should detect the 2PS6IMG.zip)
4. Press volup to flash
Also flashing this will wipe your data , and it may render your phone *impossible* to receive future ota updates as it's an unofficial release from htc.
For example: lets say htc released a new nougat ota which updates you phone to 2.3x.401.x , that ota may only update phones on FW 1.95.401.4 & not 2.28.401.9
You would still be able to flash a 2.3x.401.x or above ruu (if available) or you could s-off & downgrade to 1.95.401.4 then accept ota
Personally i wouldn't flash it as yet as the official OTA is only around the corner (HTC said Q4)
@Diz so the 2.28.x is for unofficial/developers? Can I do it on unlocked bootloader?
Ps. i want to do it without s-off

Trying to update LeeDroid - Seriously confused - Can't find firmware

The easiest way for someone who doesn't want to take the time to learn how things work would be to download this Nougat RUU
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=241133
To flash RUU:
Rename the file to 2PS6IMG.zip
Place on Ex SD CARD
boot to download mode
Press vol up to flash.
RUU will erase internal storage. Once RUU has flashed boot your phone and take the OTA to OREO. After your phone has taken the OTA flash the latest twrp then flash leedroid Oreo ROM.
The reason I suggest this way instead of flashing firmware is because your going to have to wipe data anyway and by flashing an RUU you have a clean start.

If anyone wants to know what I did to get back to stock so I could download Oreo
Downloaded Fastboot/ADB(Use this guide) https://lifehacker.com/the-easiest-way-to-install-androids-adb-and-fastboot-to-1586992378
Enabled USB debugging on the phone
Download HTC_Fastboot (Google it)
Download the Zip yldlj posted (Only if you are the same CID as me, the check this go onto the app store and find CID checker and then look on XDA for appropriate zip)
Put the download zip into the same folder as ADB/HTC_Fastboot/Fastboot folder. Rename it ota.zip
In the folder where you've extracted the ADB/Fastboot/ hold Ctrl Shift Right click open command window here
Connect your phone via USB
Set your phone onto download mode
From there I used the command htc_fastboot oem rebootRUU
Once loaded into RUU Mode use the command htc_fastboot flash zip ota.zip
Once that was complete I was back to stock Android N which then enables me to update to Oreo
BANG
Fixed
Thank you everyone for your help. If you get stuck I'll try my best to help you

1: you need the ruu that matches your main version OS which can be found in the download mode
2: if you are on leedroid oreo means you have a oreo firmware and in that case you can not "just" flash a nougat ruu. Check the guides section, there is a downgrade dedicated thread with all the needed information
