Duo Camera not working? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I've got an issue with my One M8 - the Duo Camera doesn't work. When I open the Camera app, sometimes the 'Duo camera is blocked, please make sure all lenses are uncovered' pop-up appears, or it doesn't. The thing is, my hands are nowhere near the camera lenses when I take photos.
Either way, I'm not able to apply Duo effects to photos I take - the toast messages either say 'Unavailable for hand-cover' or 'Duo effects unavailable for this photo - Please see Tips and Help for more information'.
Thanks in advance.
I'm currently using an entirely stock phone (not rooted, locked, S-ON), Hboot 3.19, CID HTC__044, firmware version 3.32.707.9, Android Kit Kat version 4.4.4.

This happened to me friend. doing a factory reset, worked for me, but its no guarantees.. this may sound silly but get some glass cleaner, spray it onto a lint-free cloth and gently wipe both lenses... Dont spray the cleaner directly onto the lenses themselves. If your using a case on your phone, is any part of it whatsoever near the lense.
Im afraid to say,it may be faulty friend and may need to return it . If its within its warranty and you havent modded it in any way
Hope that helps, but someone else may know better

Interestingly, I just got it back from repair service this Monday. It worked at the service centre. Brought it back home, performed software updates and it stopped working.

I can't seem to get the duo camera feature working. Whenever I open the default camera app it tells me my duo camera is blocked, also if my hands are nowhere near it. The lens itself doesn't show any defects or obstructions. After a few seconds the message disappears again, but I don't seem to be using the duo camera since none of the related options (U-focus etc.) are available when I open the edit menu on the photos I've taken.:crying:

[Q] Dead screen

I was running my 3G Slide on Cyanogen 6 Stable (latest) with no problem. Then one day I say artifacts on my screen, I thought there was no problem, as I was playing a game at the time. I assumed it was just a bug in the game. So I kept on using the phone with no problems. About a week later however, the first signs of my current problem surfaced. The face keys died and no longer responded, unless I slided the phone open. The problem just got continually worse from there. It progressed to the point where I could not utilize the touch screen when the phone was open and now it is at a state where the touch screen completely doesn't work either open or closed and the face keys do not work either.
Just to differentiate, the face keys are the home, menu, back, and the google search thing. But the side buttons are all intact.
I've tried rebooting the phone with no success. A memory wipe, resetting Cyanogenmod, failed to solve the problem. I've since then emailed HTC to see if I still have coverage, since I bought it second hand, and reverted back to the original rom, from a thread in the Android Development forum, so I would be covered by warranty.
I at first assumed it was the digitizer, which might still be part of the problem; I still haven't completely ruled it out. But the digitizer alone wouldn't explain the dead keys, would it?
Help? Any suggestions if HTC decides not to repair it or charges a ridiculous price?
I also get the "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" message now once I boot up.
It's most likely the flex cable that connects your screen, front buttons, microphone, etc. (everything on the front panel). That would explain the gradual going-out of the touch screen and the artifacts on the LCD. Send it in to t-mobile, the phone has only been out since last June, less than a year, so it's under warranty. Call for a replacement.
Thanks for the advice, MusicMan. I visited a T-Mobile store today, and its no doubt its under warranty. But here's the problem. I didn't buy the phone from a corporate store or an authorized store, I bought it second hand, and T-Mobile, after a visit and numerous calls of begging and pleading and employing moral responsibility, they said they can't replace the phone because the phone is not registered under my name... blah blah blah. Apparently warranty is through person and not transferrable.
What do I do?
Also, a side note.
In the off chance that I have to deal with HTC for my problem, what is the radio of the stock T-Mobile rom?
Just to make sure my phone is "stock" as ever before I send it in.
As of now I have 7.00.35.04S
I assume that the phone is still rooted even though it is back on the stock rom, will that be a problem if I send it back to HTC?

You could try to get a hold of the guy who sold you it. If he calls T-mobile customer care and puts you as a "authorized user" of the phone you can get it replaced.
However, make sure you are on the latest OTA. Check out this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946435 and scroll down to my post for another non over the air update method.
-Current stock ( ota ) radio is 7.09.35.10
- Make sure you don't have superuser. If you replaced your rom with the stock build ( like in the method linked ) you should be fine.
He's currently in Taiwan "for a few months", so I doubt he can help me from there.
Also, I'm pretty sure you have to have proof of purchase when you send it to HTC... So that might be a roadblock as well. Your last option would be to order a new flex cable online and install it yourself. Or you could pay HTC the repair fee to fix it.

Thats why the "owner" of the account calls customer care. They already have the record that he purchased the phone. So if he is put as an "authorized user" of the phone he can send it in. Of course the original owner would have to give t-mobile the shipping address and in sense do it. However it only takes maybe 20 mins? Once his refurbished comes in the mail it comes with either a plastic back or box pre-labeled to send the defective product back in.
Along the lines of have the guy call tmobile.
Hi..my cousin is in the states and is having problems with the tmobile slide..I would like to add him as an authorized user so that he may send it in for a refurbished phone...
tmobile will ask for the # and two other pieces of information...password and something else.
imo worth a shot before you have to spend money!

So right now you are unrooted and installed the 1.27.531.1 stock correct? In order to update to the latest OTA make sure you download the zip provided. Both are the same file, but for some reason the one on the google docs worked for me.
-copy the update.zip file to your sd card.
-Turn off your phone then power into fast boot( volume down and the power button)
-go into recovery once fastboot gives you the option.
-Once in recovery just hit "apply update.zip"
-Wait for it to finish installing then reboot.
Edit:
Original Thread for update.zip

Follow the rules in the original thread. Much more detail than I provided!
Enjoy man.
I checked all the settings and anything else that I could think of with a normal never rooted mytouch. All looks perfect...also sent my mytouch back to tmobile doing this. Have yet to hear from them.

reassembly probs ( camera not working) :(

Hi all,
I repaired my DHD with a new screen / middle chassis. I got it working again with the Jellytime rom, but the camera fails to start.
I subsequently bought a replacement but that didn't work either.
Could anyone give me any pointers as to what I could check for camera operation ?
i.e. I 'think' I put it back the right way round...its it poss to put it back wrongly ot would it foul?
Only just put the jellytime rom on after reassembly. Could the rom be faulty? Would a reflash work?
Its a shame as I don't want to throw any more money at fixing it...nor to I want to trash it.
Basically I want to keep it as a spare or let one of the kids have it .
thx
In my opinion, best way to go would be to install a stable ROM. Preferably the ROM that your camera still worked with. Also you could try 3rd party camera apps or barcode apps for instance, that use the camera function.
Good luck.
((( I've tried several roms not from Jellytime to IcecoldSandwich to the old Gingerbread revolution and nothing works. Also wiped the SD card too in case something from the past was causing a hiccup.
So I'm concluding this is hardware related, just wonder what could it be if I only just put a brand new lense module in.....
EDIT : i've followed this vid from start to end and can't see where I when wrong. The camera bit is after 4.40mins

I have fixed a lot of inspires and it is possible to put camera in the wrong way...not that you did but its possible-there is a small space/ 'slot' that needs to face away from speaker, it points to where the black wire threads the plastic speaker/camera cover. Another thought if you had main boards apart is they are not fully seated under the mylar now...and lastly maybe that the camera mainboard section is no good....
Nope no luck with anything here. Camera is correctlt seated and the mainboards never got separated..
Everything else worked eg Wifi , GPS , sound and camera flash torch.
Presently have it bits again.
One thought.....at the edge of the battery cover there are two contacts which mate with the top half main board. What should these contacts trigger ?

[Q] Camera Issues

Hi everyone,
I got my M8 in May (8 months of warranty remaining). The phone was working fine for the first 2 months, then whenever I tried to load the camera app I got a message "Unfortunately, Camera has stopped." It happened randomly not all the time, Force Stop and Clearing Cache didn't work. After reboot the camera app did load, but only the front-facing camera worked. I could see the rear camera in the options but couldn't select it. Then I thought I found a solution - Wiping Cache in Recovery worked. Anytime this happened I just wiped the cache in recovery and the Camera app functioned normally.
Last week when I tried to load the camera app I got a black screen and it minimised. Did the wipe and got the front facing camera only. Tried disable/enable Camera app and again wiped cache still nothing happened. Only the front camera is functional. Anyone ever faced this problem with the M8's camera.
I am keeping Factory Reset and Warranty as a last resort. (The HTC Service Center said they'll have to keep the phone for 5 days & I find it near impossible to spend that much time without a smartphone.)
*I don't have Lastpass installed and the phone is stock.

Lol, why are you so addicted to your smartphone ? Let HTC enjoy with it for a few days, since they made it. Many of them had their M8's stocked up in the service centers for 2-3 weeks !. Go ahead and give it a shot, if Factory Reset doesn't work. :good:

I'm like skeptical, but it might be a hardware issue. By the way, does your M8 have scratches on the display ?

Just received my phone today. The service rep. said it was a software issue so they downloaded the latest firmware.
I told him I already had the latest firmware, to which he said they have some sort of online connection directly with HTC and that they get their firmware from there. Apparently not the same as downloading according to him. Anyway my Camera is working perfectly.

A lot of times, our fingers reach the lens as a comfortable spot for holding the phone, as its too large. The same applies to others who use the device. They put their fingers into the camera cut outs for holding the phone firmly. Poor lens gets scratched in this process and all the M8 users suffer from the issue. The situation becomes worse when someone tries to clean the lens and finds out that the lens has been scratched. I have my wildfire up and running till date. I admit, but there is only a tiny scratch at the corner of the lens !

Front Facing Camera Not Working

A few days ago I received my brand new HTC 10 on contract from Optus. I immediately began setting it up, but a couple of days later realised that I had neglected to unlock the bootloader and root it. I was reluctant to void my warranty so didn't want to use HTC-dev to do the deed. In the end I just paid for sunshine and it was able to s-off and allow me to root without technically unlocking the bootloader, so I didn't even have to wipe data.
Anyway, I was just playing with my camera today and decided to try the front facing camera. I tried pressing the little circle-arrows button but it spun around and then nothing. The rear camera works very well, but the front facing camera just won't activate. The arrows spin but nothing happens. I'm just assuming that's what's supposed to switch cameras cuz... well... nothing happens. Wait... I actually think I tried pressing the arrows on the camera before s-offing or rooting, but iirc it locked up the camera and even killing the app and restarting didn't work because it would start up on front facing... think I just restarted it and then I could get to the rear facing and forgot about the problem with the front facing.
I'm no Android hacker but I know how to scroll through a log and by using catlog reader and starting the log recording then quickly switching to the camera and attempting to switch cameras a few times I managed to find the attached (full log is attached, screenshots show interesting stuff I noticed, may or may not be relevant).
As you can imagine I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue and that someone can tell me what I could do to fix it, because it would be rather annoying to have to restore it to factory and s-on and all that just to make a warranty claim.... and also I paid for Sunshine so that would be a waste :/
Did you ever resolve your issue? I am now having the same problem. Also rooted with sunshine, so I might have to pony up another 25$ in the event of it being a hardware failure. Which I believe it to be based off of how the front camera has been acting the last few days.

@rcharliesam Unfortunately not directly. In the end I just reset it as much as possible (which involved flashing the original recovery back on and factory resetting) but in doing so I soft-bricked it trying to S-on (because apparently you can't do that), however I sent it back to HTC with the claim "the front camera was broken so I tried a factory reset but now it won't boot" and they approved the claim.
And yeah I had to find another $25 USD to sunshine it again. All is good this time though
Thanks for replying, I pretty much figured. I went back to s-on today. I am going to go through vzw to see if they'll swap it out first. Oh well.

Question Pixel 6 refurbish check

I'd like to know is there any possibility to check if pixel 6 phone is repaired/refurbished?! I've bought p6 pro today but can't make fingerprint to work (FOTO in attachment). I saw that other people have same problems when phone turns off by self (battery goes to 0% and buy) but after hard restart everything works again...not in my case. Seller told me that his wife used telephone for just few days and decided to stay on iPhone, but I'm start to thinking that I'm scammed; under display on small plastics antenna line I see just a little scratch so I'd like to ask is there a chances that screen is replaced. All other looks like 100% new phone.
Sounds like it may have been opened. During factory assembly it's very unlikely for this to happen.
It may actually be a mark from a plastic pick used to disassemble it and not a scratch.
The display is replaced as are internal components from the front I believe.

Since the OP states that he bought the phone used, it's more likely that the person previously in charge of keeping the phone, damaged it/scratched it. Plastic is ridiculously easy to scratch, even a grain of sand in your pocket can be enough.

If the phone was properly cleaned and re-packaged and not damaged, there is no way for you to find out if you received a refurbished phone (phone that was sent back by the original customer without damage, return window or something). At least not from a "software" perspective. You as a perceptive human can always try to see if there is dust residue, fingerprint signs or anything "physical" like that on the phone/inside the package, but there is not much more than can help you to decide that (except asking Google, you could hit them up with the phone IMEI and tell them that you bought it used and want to know if it ever got officially repaired/replaced, but I have no idea if Google would even bother giving you a decent answer).
Concerning repair (phone being opened by a repair technician to fix stuff inside) - other than physical markers (prying a phone open can cause damage to the chassie), there is not much that you can find out about that. There is no way to get the specific part IDs with software and even if that was possible, it wouldn't help your cause since Google would only use genuine original parts to repair a phone.
Concerning the "plastic under display" part, I do not follow here. What plastic under display? The display is not transparent, you can't see the phones interior through it. Can you make a photo of your observation?

Most likely the battery died resulting in the FP Sensor getting disabled. A Factory reset and/or full flash to latest image should always be done when buying a phone (especially when it's used). This will fix your issue also (using the flash.android.com tool) along with the calibration tool at the bottom of this page: pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection -- 99% a factory reset/wipe, flashing to the lastest build and using the fingerprint calibration tool will fix your issue. If not, you can get a replacement by telling google you did all of these things and they'll send you a phone (usually an advanced RMA if you show you've done everything previously mentioned).
The "Flash Tool" will update your Pixel to the latest Android version, along with an option to "Wipe" the device (make sure to hit the edit pencil and pick "Wipe Device" & "flash all partitions" ; if its a VZW model, updating in Android System in settings and factory reset in Recovery will be good enough, along with the calibration tool): flash.android.com/back-to-public
If it was refurbished by Google, you can put your IMEI# in the official Pixel Repair link below, and it will tell you some information (for example if its Unlocked, "Pristine or Refurbished" etc - it's a pretty great way to find out some info about a pixel (didn't know about it until recently). If the screen was replaced by UbreakiFixit for example, it probably won't show up as refurbished. it has to go through Google to probably be changed in the system, but I am just speculating.
Code:

@Proday Can you return it? That would be the way I'd go initially. You got sold a phone that is defective hopefully it was through either ebay or Swappa with some guarantees.
At first, thank you all for helping.
@Alekos Last night i did install last (Dec) update with adb fastboot; found it here on xda (because google pull it back from servers) but as i sad, problem is still here/same. From some reason repairmypixel with google doesnt work; I put telephone in right mode, google chrome finds it, but when I start procedure it goes and goes and ~5min later Telefon restarts by self and Im getting disconnect error/try again msg. Ill try this link now to see what happens with imei, thanks one more time.
@bobby janow I've got a bill brom google store, but im going back in my country in a few day and don't have enough time to "play" with warranty procedures

There are two separate things being talked about. @Alekos said to go to https://store.google.com/repair and you might find out if it was refurbished or not (not necessarily). Should look similar the the following once you enter your IMEI in the site:

And then there is Official Google Pixel Update and Software Repair, which I suspect is what you're talking about didn't work for you, but please confirm. I know over the last two months, some others have occasionally checked Official Google Pixel Update and Software Repair and found that they hadn't updated it for the Pixel 6/Pro yet, so maybe that's still the case.
I've understand what he sad. Imei checked, results below...
And attach with pixelrepair that doesnt work (pop up blocker turned off)...
And I can try with Official Google Pixel Update and Software Repair, but I'm certain that it is the same as factory image installed with adb command, that I did (although I've put dec update not nov).

Thanks, are you using the OEM USB-C cable? At least half a dozen users in this section didn't have success getting their Pixel 6 Pro working using the factory image zip, but Official Google Pixel Update and Software Repair got their phone restored to stock and fixed their issue. Yeah, I'm a little bit experienced
I'm going through this Official Google Pixel Update and Software Repair, see results soon. And I'm thinking that I know where is problem with pixelrepair.withpixel...didn't kill adb command; this flash tool tould me that i have to do first becouse adb is already in use...can be sam problem.

Ah! Hopefully, you'll have the solution soon.
So, I did all as @Alekos sad in another thread:
edit-- sorry, didn't realize you already posted separately. I commented to your post anyhow.
Did you figure this out yet? I would try wiping the phone, installing the latest build from the flash tool website (specifically this link: flash.android.com/back-to-public), on that page, edit the options for "Wipe" and "Flash all partitions". After it's done, run the Calibration tool (bottom of this page: pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection ) - this should work, if not my guess is there's a bigger issue.
Still same problem with fingerprint...now I'm certain that's the hardware problem; or screen is replaced or FP sensor is dead
Anyway, I want to thank you all 9ne more time, I've learned something new yesterday and today!!

That message is so familiar to me and i'm frightening of it
For the last month I've been in possession of 3 (three!) p6p. The 1st one was received from my carrier and it burned out while updating to December software being only 2 weeks old, no sign of life, dead while charging etc.
Google shipped another one stating it is Pristine which means Like New condition. It came in a refurbished white box, much smaller than the original one and there was a tiny dent - almost like yours but located on top of the screen. What is the most important - I was getting that message "Enrollment was not complete..." Flashing at flash.android.com did not solve anything but was successful. Google support representative advised to get into safe mode, try to configure fingerprint again and it didn't work as well. Calibration tool was not offered as an option at all.
Now it's on the way back to google. The 3rd one I'm owning now is a new phone with no issues so far.
So my advice is to return your faulty phone to the seller if you are still able to. Getting a replacement from Google is tricky as you may get another pristine p6p with the same or other issues. Or you are lucky and you will get a good one but it's a lottery anyway. So it's up to you.
Good luck!
@asdor I was with seller right now, he brings me my money back...end of (sad) story There are still good people!
