I'm sure a lot of topics have discussed the battery life of LG G3 on Lollipop. Here I'm trying to figure out if I did something wrong.
I own a D855 (Asian) with stock ROM. I upgraded to Lollipop V20B-SEA-xx in January through LG PC Suite. I found out that the battery life was a lot worse than KK, so I did a factory reset like many suggested. Before the factory reset, I use the backup menu in the phone and backed up everything. I duly restored everything after the factory reset. The battery life remained the same.
2 days ago I upgraded to V20C-SEA-xx through the PC Suite. I got stuck in a bootloop after the update, so I did a hard reset (which returned my G3 to Kitkat 4.4.2). I downloaded the update once again and my phone booted. However the notification bar and home buttons are missing. I tried doing a factory reset using the menu in settings, but it did nothing, so I did another hard reset. This time it booted normally, and I proceed to restore my data/settings/etc through the restore function in settings.
With V20C, battery life is even worse than V20B. I read that a lot of people get better battery life after a factory reset on Lollipop, but I'm not that lucky.
So I was wondering whether it has something to do with the backup and restore that I did? I was thinking of doing another hard reset and setup my phone MANUALLY this time. What do you guys think?
I just upgraded to 20H and battery issues still persist. On 20F I calibrated my phone and it helped a bit. Lg has to do something about it. I hate hard resetting my phone after every software update.
My battery was sh*tty too after 20H, but after reset its perfect. Last the whole day with heavy using

Did you do a factory reset from the settings menu or a hard reset? Also did you do a backuo and restore (if yes, how)? thanks

Thanks for the reply. It adds to my suspicion that the restore and backup process somehow "cancel out" the hard reset

Yeah, "somehow".
First you delete all bad and broken settings, which led to apps misbehaving and battery drainage, then you restore them.
Seriously, try to set up phone from scratch, without restoring anything from google account or whatever.

Also, you may not want to add google account in setup screen. There was a case in which pulling wifi settings from google resulted in inability to search for wifi networks. Same thing may have happened to your account - some settings got broken, and they're synching back after every hardreset.
what is a hard reset and soft reset and how do you do both? thanks for help

soft reset is done by factory data reset option from settings--> backup&reset
hard reset is done by turning your phone off, then holding the vol down+power button together. After the LG logo appeared, release both keys and then hold them again immediately. It will then ask you if you want to do a factory reset. Use the power button to select.
exact same problem
I encountered the exact same problem while upgrading from v20b to v20c through lg pc suite... I immediately connected my phone to lg mobile support tool, which then updated my phone to v20c ... I noticed that lg mobile support tool was upgrading my phone from kitkat(while my phone was in boot loop)... My data was not lost ...
DONOT USE LG PC SUITE... Use lg mobile support tool....
Changelog included new homescreen buttons..and it removed some bugs from keyboard...
Being a heavy gamer i noticed a slight improvement in battery life..
Software version : V20c-SEA-XX

Will the update through the lg mobile tool wipe everything ( apps etc ) ? Is it recommended to do a factory reset after the upgrade?
Thanks.

Yes, it will erase everything. I'm guessing a factory reset wouldn't be necessary since I think it starts you with a clean slate to begin with after installing it, but if you prefer to do it, it wouldn't hurt I suppose.
LG Update tool
LG Update Tool or whatever you call it. I used it yesterday for update from official first update (vj10?) to official ICS. It leaved all contacts, messages and WiFi access codes intact.
Everything as it is described on LG page (remove spaces, add www in front)
lg . com/us/ NitroHD-Upgrade
1. Install driver
2. reboot
3. install Tool
4-and-5. connect phone and run tool
In ~25 minutes I've got ICS installed.
The only issue I have is the battery life. My usage mode is "Mostly idle" and battery lasts 1 day +. Now it is running out 10% per hour. Not sure what is the problem.
There is my issue, I cannot get the tool to see my phone is connected? Where in CM9 do I activate the "PC Software" mode or have the USB connection menu come up?
In my case (Stock ROM) that was in phone's Settings -> Connectivity -> USB settings then it was a menu { Mass Storage, Charge only, PC Software, MTP something } and "Always Ask" (I'm Paranoid ). I'm not familiar with CM, so check other threads. May be it's easier to get stock ROM first.

No, it won't erase everything. just start LG Update tool & connect your phone and start updating. after everything is done you will see your installed apps are still there even call log sms everything remains there.

Fail on LG's part. In that case, I'd suggest that everyone who installs this ROM perform a factory reset after installing it.

Not a fail at all... It backs up your info before doing the update.
Personally, I find this to be a huge win. I find it very cumbersome and annoying to have to go through and download my apps and customize the settings.
Way to go LG!

No, it doesn't back anything up. It's just means it's not clearing your data partition at all during the update. It's the same as not doing "facory reset/wipe data" from CWM before installing a ROM.
The problem is that can lead to all kinds of weird problems once you're in the new ROM. It's probably why some people report bad battery life and others don't, etc.

I would suggest that you do a factory reset and see if the battery life improves after doing that. You'll have to set up the phone again though. Make sure your contacts are either stored to SIM or Google so that you don't lose them, etc.
If you don't know, you need to turn the phone completely off, then hold down volume down and power button at the same time -- keep holding until the text appears that asks if you want to factory reset. Then let go and follow the instructions.
There shouldn't be any reason to install the update a second time.

Thanks for your useful point about factory reset. i did factory reset and downloaded about 30 apps which i installed earlier. now i will notice battery life. i will confirm it after using a day.
Does anyone know if this update could apply to P936? I'm currently on CM9-RC2 for P930...
Thanks in advance, cheers!

Help ! I own an LG G3 and randomly had a problem with the stock messaging app as it was failing and crashing, so then I decided to reboot my phone but as it rebooted, it was still the same except it had a stock background, no knock code, and my home + recent apps buttons do not function at all but show touch feedback... also when I long press my recent apps button it brings up the settings tab which it should do, which is odd, also my return/back button still works fine. I switched my background to my original one and enabled knock code again, then tried rebooting, hot booting, and powering off and on the phone but nothing worked it even reset my background again to stock and disabled my knock code. I can answer any questions other questions, Any help would be appreciated, Thank You !
Edit: Notifications do not show and the stock camera shortcut ( Hold volume down ) stopped working.
I'd probably try a factory reset if you haven't already. Also list your current software version and carrier info., which might be helpful to us in helping you.

Be sure to backup your messages/address book, that problem sounds like an excellent candidate for a factory reset solution.

It's a Sprint phone, software version LS990ZV4
I was gonna use that as a last resort, but I'll give it a try. Guess I'll have to reroot my phone... Again

Well, if you are rooted, you might try going into your custom recovery and wiping cache and dalvik-cache.
Since you suspect the messaging app, maybe wipe the data for that one as well? You'd lose all your messages, of course.

I don't have a custom recovery, whoops. The messaging app was fixed after the first reboot, which is when my phone booted that all the other problems occurred. Thinking of just backing everything up and factory resetting, although I wonder if I back up my phone and reset it then load my back up would the problem persist ? as maybe it stems off the soft/firmware, feel like this is the problem since the buttons show touch feedback but do not work.

Glad you seem to have it resolved.
BTW, a couple of notes and suggestions on best practices:
1. If you root and intend in any way on using the elevated permissions to modify your system, you should install a custom recovery, such as TWRP. This will allow you to backup your entire system at any time and restore in the event of an oooops! event.
2. If/when you have a custom recovery:
NEVER accept an OTA (over the air) update. It will bork your phone.
NEVER perform a factory reset from a stock ROM. It will bork your phone.
My phone is running the GPe 6.0 ROM which is patched to the current monthly update
It ran out of battery earlier and I charged and switched on and got this message
android system :
There’s an internal problem with your device, and it may be unstable until you factory data reset

All data was missing, home screen defaulted to icons. It was as though I was signed in as a guest
I had to do a full reset
Sorry for bumping this post, but i have just had this issue after my battery died on a night out, next morning turned it on but gave this error instead.
I'm in the same situation after my battery ran out and rebooted my device.
All my apps have lost their settings. I have to reconfigure everything.
Did you guys found any solutions in order to restore this?
Ok here we go...stock pixel XL, not rooted, bootloader never unlocked (on Oreo) and i am having problems. In no particular order....mobile data won't stay on.... I've tried all the suggestions that I've read ip4, reset data, made sure mobile data was on. It still won't stay on. The pull down menu now only drops one level. The settings button doesn't work from the drop down menu. The soft buttons at the bottom of the screen don't work. Anybody have any suggestions?

That's where I was afraid that I was heading.....thanks for making me feel better about taking that route!
Hi, I'm aware that several people have issues with the new pie rom.
Unfortunately, I have a problem that I haven't seen before on the forum:
It takes like a full 5 sec to call somebody and the same to end it.
It's very frustrating because I never know how to react in this situation (did he heard? Etc...)
I don't want to factory reset and I got everything stock.
Anyone has an idea on how to fix this?
Can I wipe cache with the stock recovery? Maybe install an other phone app?
Thx
i am having issues in pie as well. i cant seem to transfer large files to the phone.doing so makes the phone restarts. i tried it 5 times or so. fhis update is not good
Only way to clear up issues is a clean factory image install if this was not done to begin with.
OK thanks...
Though I blindfully hope someone will be get some alternative has I don't want do execute such extreme solution

It's actually relatively painless. Apps restore automatically when you go through setup, calls and texts are restored, as well as system settings and WiFi networks. Takes me ~30 mins total, and maybe 5 of that is actually looking at the phone, the rest is letting it sync and restore backups automatically.
I was thinking about it doing a factory reset once the final came out but I've heard stories from fellow moviepass owners that are unable to use the app when switching phones. That would make a valid concern for factory resets as well. Not because of lag but I have noticed battery seems worse after the upgrade and wanted to factory reset to rule out. As I ran all the ota betas of pie a factory reset isn't a bad idea anyway.

Your device ID is tied to the app. When you factory reset and reinstall the app your device ID is reset. You can root using Magisk and then install Titanium Backup to backup the app and data, this will preserve the ID. i had to do this when switching ROMS.
