Is there any software that will allow me to use WiFi without the built in wifi tuner but instead using a usb wireless adapter? Is this even a possibility on android?
Why would you even want to do that?

cool
This is a really cool idea. I'm getting an Ota adapter cable soon and I also have a portable router. I'm going to see if I could get anything to work with it. I don't know though.

I don't think a portable router is going to let you connect to another wireless router. I think you would need something like a wireless bridge to connect to the wireless router. And that wireless router would probably need to have the bridging enabled or something like that. And that seems like a pointless endeavor to improve wireless signal unless the bridge is halfway between the router and your tablet.
I would like a wireless adapter that has stronger signal reception.
using otg adapter coupled with usb extension cable and wifi dongle to tablet

Did you ever figure this out?
I am also trying to bring a signal into my apt that's only making it to the outside of my apt. I currently have a 15 foot usb extension cable hooked to a dlink n dongle and have it mounted just outside my window. I have that hooked to my laptop and am using connectify to bring in the free city wide wifi into my apt.
I have not had any issues, but am having a hard time keeping any other devices connected to my connectify as trying to get a valid IP is buggy due to restrictions and various issues then with the city wide server.
I need to find android drivers for a non android device I guess?
Have you had any luck?
I've got a Note 10.1 2014 mounted in the dash of my truck to replace the radio and am on a mission to figure out how to get USB OTG to work with charging. I've read an ocean of threads regarding hacking MHL adapters, but there is not any information specific to the Note 10.1 2014.
Right now I've got a relay system in the dash that switches between a OTG cable and a charge cable depending if the ignition is on or off. This works for my basic purposes, but if I use GPS navigation and wifi tethering, I run the battery pretty low after only 3-4 hours. When I turn off the truck it begins charging, but that wont work for a road trip.
I've tried the Samsung smart dock (without reading that it wouldn't work), and of course, it doesn't work, although it would be the perfect solution.
My idea is that there would be some way to use the 11 pin MHL connector on the device to get what I'm after. Looking at the pinout, it seems that there are some USB host pins within the 6 additional MHL pins, but I do not know of anyone who has tapped into them and had OTG working.
Is anyone else trying to get this to work on a Note 10.1 2014? I'm happy to hack up and solder anything and everything imaginable to give it a try, but I'd like to collaborate about it and see if we as a group can get this working.
Im about ready to rip apart my smartdock and see exactly why it wont work with this tablet.... have no idea why it qont recognise the tablet...

Meanwhile, is there a possibility for that knock-out?
High current charging has an impact on the signal lines. So USB 2.0 current is limited to 500mA, or probably the 900mA from USB3, if the port can provide it. On a standard USB2 port the Note remains self-powered. And even with 900mA it will slowly discharge while in use, despite the battery charging at max current. On a 2A charger, the operating power bypasses the battery, which is much more healthy for it.
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I asked imprecise. What I liked to ask is, if there is meanwhile a possibility to charge the tablet while using the usb connection e.g. with an external hard disk?
Almost certainly not. Samsung could have provided a charger jack, or even support wireless charging. But it was not meant to be.
I just tried one of the charge and 2 female usb adapters off ebay and it didnt charge. It detected the usb connectors connection, but wouldnt charge.
$5 lost...
Did you used the wall plug? Because the tab needs 2A for charging...

Why not take away the USB requirement? I assume you want this to allow external storage, in this case get some sort of NAS that can be 12V powered and install that in your truck then allow the Note to connect to this via Wifi, then the USB port can be dedicated entirely for charging only.
Plus you have the benefit that when at home you can transfer file to your NAS without needing to leave you PC.

Are you using the LTE/3G for internet access? if not then setting up a wireless network in your truck might work. I use a HooToo TM001 (also have the TM002) to do this set up. The hub has a 6000mah battery that when the USB drive is not installed can charge a device.
i know it's been a while since OP posted, but i've been using a wireless HD so i can use external storage and maintain a charge. if you get the seagate wireless plus, you'll be able to charge and stream at the same time as long as you use a usb3.0 cable to charge from (it's included). using a 2.0 cable will turn off wifi.
it's quite a bit more than OTG, but it does allow you to have tons of storage available while still having a charging option.
I use a nexus 7 in the dash of my car (sure do wish I had space for the note 10.1 in there though!) With the nexus 7 I bought a y-cable that allows me to charge AND use otg functions. However, a specific kernel was needed im pretty sure. I set it all up a while back so I cant remember specifically sorry. Its all nexus 7 forums here though.

yeah mate, i'll have a look for you. the nexus 7 is out of the car now cus im trying to make a custom facia to fit the samsung note 10.1 in there. so I'll have to charge it up and have a look which kernel it was running. but im pretty sure it was just the default one that came with the AutoDroid rom in the nexus 7 forums.
if you don't hear back from me just pm me, I'm forgetful as hell and its coming into exam time....so yeah
is there a way to use my pc's internet connection on the tab 3 10.1? at my work the wifi blows. pc has a t1. if i connect it using the usb can i use the pc's t1
thanks
It's not that easy. I don't if any usb to ethernet dongle is available for Samsung tablets.
The best way is buying a cheap mini portable router on ebay under 20$. Then you have your own wifi hotspot.
Hello, I have a fairly weak 2.4ghz Wireless N signal in my office that has plenty of fast Ethernet ports on a 1GB network switch coming from the main router. I just purchased the TRENDnet Wireless AC Easy-Upgrader TWE-820AP in order to bring both AC and 5GHZ to my office and I plan on installing it near my work area and desk, which should keep the TAB S within 10-20 feet at all times. However, in the specs for the TAB S it says (in parenthesis) that 5GHZ is only for the N signal. Does this mean the AC is 2.4ghz perhaps?
Simple question is, will my TAB S see the new wireless AC network that this device creates and connect to it? Thanks
Well I answered this question myself lol. It works perfectly with the twe-820ap above. Wifi speeds picked up considerably.

I know this is gonna be quite a niche scenario but I'm at wit's end here and I wanted to see if there was anyone else out there who is/has struggled with this: I want to use a more power-delivery capable USB-C to USB-C cable to connect my S20+5G (Snapdragon, Verizon if relevant) to my computer (has to be the USB-C port, for various reasons) for the purposes of a USB-tethered internet connection. Has anyone found a cable other than the exact one that comes in the box that's able to consistently (i.e. no random disconnects, no "USB connect/disconnect chime") hold a connection? My entire internet connectivity (due to my location) is dependent on this so that's why the whole "no disconnect" thing is a big deal.
I've tried a multitude of cables that *should* be upgrades to the stock one off of Amazon (from decent manufacturers i.e. Amazon Basics, CableMatters etc.) but even if they deliver power more efficiently or transfer files faster or whatever, the main thing I need out of them is their tethering consistency, which they ALWAYS fall short of compared to the black "came with the phone" 3 ft. cable. These "higher material grade/better quality" cables will always inevitably kill my connection within anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes of the start of connectivity.
The stock cable provides the type of connectivity I need, however I have no idea what the exact specs are for it but I'm fairly certain they aren't optimal; i.e. while my phone is tethered, the battery can't charge faster than the rate at which it's using power to do the tethering, so if I leave it connected long enough, the phone will die even though it's getting "charged" by the computer. For reference I believe the phone's USB-C port is USB 3.2 while my computer's port is USB 3.1 gen 2 and I don't think the stock cable reaches either of these standards. I've tried looking on the Samsung website but only find the exact cable I already have. Is there a better "official" version of this cable available somewhere? Or any non-official ones that are confirmed to hold the connection like the stock one?
Thanks in advance.
As an alternative, have you considered Ethernet tethering? It simplifies both the logistics of charging and maintaining a reliable data connection.
I would if I could but due to the aforementioned complete dependence on my cell data for our internet service, I have to use some...creative workarounds regarding hotspot data limits and unfortunately it can only be done through USB tethering
Interesting. How are you working around hotspot data limits? I'm curious about this, and wonder why you couldn't do something similar for Ethernet.
BTW, I use this with my phone:
Anker 543 USB-C Hub (6-in-1, Slim)
The Anker Advantage: Join the 55 million+ powered by our leading technology. Massive Expansion: Equipped with a Power Delivery input port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a USB-C data port, and 2 USB data ports. Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Connect a 65W wall charger to the Power Delivery...
us.anker.com
It accepts USB PD input and when paired with a Samsung 45W charger and its stock cable, does a great job at quickly charging my phone even when using DeX over HDMI or powering USB hard disks, etc. And the Ethernet link is rock solid. For reference, I am running DUJ on a SM-G986B.
