Had Evo since day 1. Rooted right away and have been ROM-happy, flashing my favorite as developers release them. Went from Fresh to Myn to MIUI and am now on my favorite, most stable and reliable rom: Deck v1.
Problem:
9 days after switching to Deck I stopped receiving sms messages completely. This is not an issue of the notifications for sms being turned off, nor is it a ringer issue. The text never comes through. I can send texts without issue, no problem.
Tried to fix this in these ways:
•*I made sure I wasn't blocking any texts; this can be done at sprint.com > my account.
• I called sprint so they could remove/re-add my sms messages which usually fixes this type of issue.
• I restored a nandroid backup taken at a point when texts were working.
• I tried restoring the stock image - then updating profile. Still wouldn't receive.
• Obviously rebooted 35 times throughout the course of all this (i have to say it, somebody will ask )
• Full wipe etc.
Nothing worked.
Called Sprint knowing they couldn't do a damn thing and would probably stop listening if they knew my phone was rooted. Long story short they sent me in to get a new Evo. Was worth a shot, I wasn't convinced it was a hardware issue (how could it be, sms is not dedicated to a particular piece of hardware in the phone) but I went in and did the swap.
New Evo, unrooted, texts worked! but wait, that's not all.
9 days after rooting again and installing Deck v1 - poof - no incoming texts. The exact same issue.
WTF is going on here?? There is nothing in logcat, absolutely nothing happens on my side when somebody sends me a text.
Google voice texts are a good emergency workaround but I want my native texts. Is this a deck issue?? anybody else getting this? i;ve ggogled for weeks now and nobody has come accross this particular issue. Also this issue wont fix itself. i went a almost a week the first time without noticing i wasn't getting texts.
Have you tried a ##786# reset? You will need your MSL code. Also, it will wipe all data from your phone, so take that into account. When you ##786#, let the list load and then hit "menu", and "reset".
When I first flashed to a GingerSense rom, I lost the ability to send/receive MMS and I was not able to connect to 3G at all. 4G and WiFi worked, but the 3G was nonexistent to my phone. After calling Sprint several times, one tech told me to reset my phone this way. I told him I would have to call back because if my phone was going to get wiped, I had to back everything up first and it would take a while. After I backed up all my app/data with Titanium and made a NAND back-up, I did it and it got my phone working right.
Hopefully you get the same result. Good luck.

Flashed back to a Sense/stock rom to do just that. Didn't help.
Whenever somebody has issues like mine it usually involves sending AND receiving. For me it's strictly receiving.
People also center these issues around MMS. Sending MMS is not an issue for me. I can send everything. I can't receive a damn thing.
That certainly is an oddity. I've been using decks 1.2 since C, and am currently on Z. I've never had any issues with not receiving sms messages (as far as I know...I suppose it would take someone to tell me that they sent me a message and I never replied, which I haven't got yet) I have never really seen this issue, except on my buddies stock hero a couple weeks. His problem was that he had never deleted any of his texts, so literally had like 10k messages or more in there. Once I was finally able to get all his damn messages cleared out (took forever...he wouldn't let me factory reset it) he was able to start receiving texts again. I'm sure that's not your problem, because you've been flashing and wiping, surely your texts have been cleared out...unless you restore them all. That's the only time I've seen that. I would've suggested maybe it was an issue on sprints end, which would not be unheard of, but if that was the case it wouldn't have worked on your new unrooted evo when you got it.
I saw in deck's thread that you already deleted the telephony.db directory, and that had no affect for you. I really wish I had some suggestions for you, but that is just odd. My first guess would've been a problem with sprint.
EDIT: Also, are you using the GV and Sprint integration? I don't use it, but I saw that if some settings weren't correct with that (from the google voice website) that all messages will go thru google voice, and not thru the native messaging app. Could that possibly have anything to do with it, maybe?
If you have Sprint/Google Voice integration, that is the problem. There are some funky things going on with Google Voice lately. Can't send messages from Gmail to a Google Voice number and have it register as a cell sms. The message is automatically sent to and only goes to the Google Voice Inbox.
I've had some sms trouble with all ROMs, not simply Deck's. It sounds identical to your issue. Google is the only constant between all ROMs. My problem was resolved by going into Google Voice settings, unchecking "Receive text messages on this phone," saving changes, then rechecking it and saving those changes.
I have lost the ability to receive sms numerous times. I am convinced it is a Google/Sprint integration issue.
I cant get text messages either. I can send all day and im testing, flashing roms, recoveries, I just unrooted as a final solution (so i thought) and nothing. Same crap. If anyone has a fix or if the fix is on another thread let me know please, thanks. Other wise im just gonna root back and say F! text messages
If you're on MIUI and didn't wipe, when you flashed it can cause these issues. Try to reflash, after doing a full wipe.
The issue that I'm having is that I can send out text messages but am not able to receive them. Had no issues today until I upgraded to deodexed stock EG22 with the purple CWM 3.1.0.1, root and Busybox 1.18.4. I've got Google Voice set up with my account so I know that texts are coming back but they aren't going to my phone. Any ideas as to what I can do? I've odin'd a few times and tried airplane mode and back to data to no avail. Please help!

It's because of Google Voice (I had this problem too).
Go to: https://www.google.com/voice, and then hit Voice Settings in the top right corner.
When you see your phone's number, they should be 2 options under it.
Check the one that says "Receive Text Messages on this phone"
As long as you have that checked, you should be able to receive text messages again without Google Voice.
Hope this helps! This problem was very annoying for me as well!
Looks like this was the issue. I didn't have issues before changing roms, do the settings change when you root the phone you think?

Nah, had nothing to do with the rom. Google Voice intercepts sms on your phone for some reason. Most likely you had just noticed it now.
I'm having issues. After searching XDA and Google I've come to a dead end.
What I'm running currently:
-EVO 4G now running SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense(Odexed) (Was MikG v3.0)
-PRI: 2.15_003
-PRL: 60683
-Baseband: 2.15.00.0808
I was running KushDecks ICS for about two weeks and everything worked great besides the FC's because of Trebuchet launcher. So I flashed JaredTheGreats ICS 4.0.3 Beta 2.5 (uses Nova Launcher) then I couldn't receive mms.
I did some research and looked like I needed to run a PRL update. So I just flashed MikG V3.0 (Great flash, btw) updated PRL and I still don't receive MMS even though i can send MMS(testing with my brothers phone).
I've found some things about APN and found some sources that show how to fix the APN but none of them are working.
Any leads would be great. Thanks in advance.
Come to think of it I will post some status updates on what I try and the results. Maybe others are having the same issue.
1/28/12
-Flashed and reFlashed Sense and ASOP roms Results: SMS receive not working
-Updated PRL and Profile on Sense Rom (MikG v3.0) Results: SMS receive not working
-APN backup fix and restore on MikG v3.0 Results: SMS receive not working
-Tried third-party SMS app (GO SMS Pro) Results: SMS receive not working
-Flashed latest stock rom from sprint. Results: SMS receive not working
-##SCRTN# reset Results: SMS receive not working
-Called Sprint - 8 resets later + ##SCRTN# reset Results: SMS receive not working
-Sprint told me locational service problem. (I think lies) Results: SMS receive not working
-Urge to hulk smash my phone.... Results: SMS receive not working
1/30/12
-The settings in my Google Voice account were messed up. Results: SMS receive is now working
It may be that there's something wrong with the native MMS/SMS application. In the 3D forums this is also an issue and we are downloading GoSMS as a work around. Give it a try.

Hey thanks for the reply.
Just tried Go SMS Pro. SMS send works but was delayed by about an extra 20 seconds compared to the native. SMS receive still doesn't work.

Phone just sits there, downloading and gives error or just doesn't even give the option to do so? Okay, since you're running a Sense ROM, hopefully you have access to EPST settings and have your MSL handy; run the following ##SCRTN#, input your MSL and reset. It will only reset the NAI values and your phone will go through an OTA programming. Hopefully, that works for you.

Phone doesn't do anything. No notifications. No errors. Nothing. I just don't receive texts at all. I tried the ##SCRTN# and it still doesn't work.
Called Sprint they told me to do the ##SCRTN# as well. Nothing changed. Restarted my phone dozens of times. They reset their services for me several times.
Eventually, they told me their is a problem at my current location. But I believe that is a lie because my brother is on the same plan as me, with the same phone, on the same network and in the same location and he receives texts without a problem.
Also, i have this problem everywhere not only at my current location but also when I'm at my office maybe 5miles away. Even when I'm in the city 20miles away. I'm not receiving no texts at all.
I'm curious to what the problem could be...
I'm losing hope. :/
Other thing that could be tried is to move from device to device. Swap into another phone, let it program, try a test text message, if you receive switch back.
What exactly do you mean by swap into another phone?

Get another phone and activate it on your account/number. Send a test text to yourself. If you receive on that temp phone, switch back. If not a smartphone you could/would incur prorated charges, but will definitely know whether its the hardware or not.

Alright. I'll try that Monday when I have the ability to.
I'm thinking of unrooting my phone and taking it in to the Sprint store have em deal with it.
Okay, I figured it out. Hit me like a ton of bricks and now I feel stupid. haha.
I had Google Voice set up on my account for voicemails and for some reason the setting to receive texts on my phone was turned off. I turned it on and everything went well.
Derp.
I am a noob to posting but not new to reading this forum nor rooting.
I have an EVO 4G and just flashed AOKP build 33 with GAPPS 3-17.
I have Google Voice installed and have used it with no problems for almost a year now.
Just yesterday when I flashed AOKP build 33 my phone quit receiving text messages. I still receive them on my Google Voice account on my phone and on the computer.
GV is set to have my text messages go through my text client and my text client is set to the default messaging app.
I have tried flashing to recovery nandroids of previous Roms and states of Roms and that did not solve my problem.
I didn't see anyone at the AOKP thread who has had the same problem.
What can I do? Please help.
*apologies for posting this if there is a better place for it to go but after making it through all of the results on my searches about this with no solution I am extremely frustrated and need a solution.
Have you tried uninstalling GV to see if that solves the problem? My phone did the same thing for a while with google voice and I never understood why, but uninstalling GV took care of my issues. You will probably get the text messages a few hours to a few days late, or at least that is what happened to me

So do I need to do more than just uninstall and re-install the app? i.e. the whole thing with un-linking my number and voicemail and everything?
If you uninstall it, I def would suggest doing the full uninstall procedure,..the unlinking, etc.

Giving it a shot now. Thanks.
I'm worried though, without GV I will have no option for text messages.
How's that? What did I miss? You don't have a stock messaging app, or you don't have a sprint phone #?

no dice
I disabled my GV account and un-linked it from my number, restarted and still no incoming texts. Any other ideas?
Make sure somehow you have the latest radios and such maybe? Have someone text you again now that its all undone and see if the new message will go through. Like I said, even after disabling GV, it took 3 days for the lost texts to come through.

I've had someone texting me throughout the process to no avail. I am working on updating the profile and the PRI/PRL but have to load a sense ROM. Is that the same as the radios? Haven't really dealt with radios before.
Any towers being worked on in your area? I've had no incoming texts for 4 weeks now, due to a tower upgrade (LTE). The only way I could get a text was to make a phone call (typically called my voicemail when I wanted to check for texts). Supposedly this is done as of today...
Worth it for the LTE though!
Resolved
Thanks guys. I ended up just flashing a MikG ROM and it corrected what ever was wrong. Then flashed my AOKP ROM and we are back up and running. Still have no idea what it was.
I'm having same issues, ive been switching back and forth between ROMS to see if i can find one that works. I removed Google voice from my phone, and deactivated it online to see if that fix it. but not working still.
I still only get texts when i make a phone call.
Mik G worked for me as well
Those who are having the problem, are you restoring a backup of GV with data?
Remember, especially with Google apps, there are a lot of updated features for ICS and backups from Gingerbread will not work efficiently. It is best to start from scratch with these apps, especially seeing that Google voice pull most of its data from the cloud... no real need to restore data with it.
I'm having a frustrating issue with the stock Android Messages app. My work sends notification texts via email, ie. from a gmail account to "mynumber"@tmomail.net.
The Android Messages app (stock android sms app), will not download these texts. I've been troubleshooting this all week and continue to come up empty, here is a breakdown of symptoms and what I have tried:
-My phone does notify me that a message is received, but requires me to tap to attempt to download the message, but the download always fails.
-Auto-download MMS is enabled, app is up to date
-third party apps WORK (kinda, see textra screenshot. message is delivered along with a weird code)
-if there is a subject in the email, the subject WILL display in the text, but not the body
-Safe Mode does not fix it
-phone is Pixel XL from Play store on T-Mobile
-issue happened on stock unrooted phone with all updates
-after exhausting all options I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and Pure Nexus rom, issue did not go away
-have deleted and edited all APNs countless times changing damn near every option to no avail
-have tried on and off wi-fi, with and without wi-fi calling, no changes
-normal MMS works fine (picture texts, group texts)
-have tried same APNs and apps on two different devices on my plan (V20 and S6 edge), and this issue cannot be duplicated. tmomail messages works fine on those phones with the exact same settings as on my Pixel
That's basically it. Hopefully I'm missing something simple. Please help if you have any suggestions, I'm open to just about anything. I know the easy fix is to just use Textra or another third party app, but I really don't want to. Also I can't stand not knowing what the problem is!!! Thanks in advance!

Right now they are reset to default.

Hey so I know your post is literally years old but I had been going through the same problem for YEARS before someone at T-Mobile finally figured it out. I figured I would post this to give you a hand and maybe someone else with this problem.
After going back and forth with T-Mobile for, no joke, 2 years on this issue, the fix was finally discovered. It has to do with T-Mobile "Digits". It's a "free" "second line" which is really just an alternate phone number for you to give people on sites like CraigsList if you don't want people to know your real number. You can just use Google Voice for this. Anyway, call T-Mobile and tell them you don't want your Digits number linked to your cell number (at least not for texts) and it will fix the issue.
Drove me crazy for YEARS. Hope this helps you or anyone else out there!
