family mobile settings - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got an HTC One M8 and am having difficulty setting it up to work with Family Mobile.
I've entered in all the information from https://www.myfamilymobile.com/Supp...94-457c-90a3-7c8b7ac7b1f8#GeneralFAQ-Answer15 but am still getting a "Connection failed due to incorrect APN setting".
I tried using 216.155.175.188:8080 as the proxy per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15137221&postcount=3 but that didn't help.
I also tried using 216.155.165.50:8080 as the proxy per http://www.apnwiki.com/walmart-family/walmart-family-mobile-apn-settings/ but that didn't help. FWIW I note that that's one of two Gateway IP addresses mentioned at https://www.myfamilymobile.com/Supp...d94-457c-90a3-7c8b7ac7b1f8#GeneralFAQ-Answer5.
Any ideas?
One thing I'm wondering... where I can I enter in the gateway and DNS info into Android? The Family Mobile site provides that info but I see no way to enter it into Android.

If its not a field in the APN settings, its not needed.
Make sure (double and triple check) there isn't a single typo. Just a single wrong character in the APN settings can screw up the whole deal. Make sure you haven't mixed up forward versus backslash,
Make sure th APN and SIM works on another device, if possible.

Cingular MEdiaNet Proxy

Somehow I can't get the MEdiaNet Proxy to work properly. I've configured my internet settings to what is widely available information.
_______________________________________
When I have IE configured as follows:
IE > Tools > Options > Connections > Select Network: WAP Network
I can't access the MEdiaNet homepage nor any other site on the web. Instead I get a return error that says: "The Requested Page can not be displayed."
_______________________________________
When I have IE configured as follows:
IE > Tools > Options > Connections > Select Network: The Internet
I can get access to the web (which is more important at this point) but still not the MEdiaNet homepage.

The puzzling thing for me is that I didn't have this problem when I was under the unlocked T-Mobile ROM. Any help or insight is much appreciated.
proxy
I am not on cingular, but used to be a while back. this is what you should have.
gprs
APN: wap.cingular
username(CAPS): [email protected]
password: CINGULAR1
CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET
PROXY SET UP
connects from the INTERNET
to THE wap network
Wireless.cingular.com:80
make sure you deletet anyother proxy settings
in PIE tools/options/connections
choose wap network, try again auto detect on/off not sure.
that should work.
Yup. Those are my exact settings. I've checked it 100 times and still can't figure it out. Again, "THE INTERNET" works but the "WAP NETWORK" does not.
Something happened when I migrated to the HTC based rom. I'm wondering if there's a registry value that changes the way proxies are handled within wm5.
I had the same problem. Someone on howardforums.com told me to use 66.209.11.61:9201 as the proxy and to switch the proxy type from HTTP to WAP.
Worked like a champ (not sure why the normal settings don't work though).
Now if I could only get MMS to work...
Thanks for the tip! It works perfectly.
Just tested out my MMS settings to be sure that it was working. It is indeed working both for sending and receiving. Settings are as follows:
Go to messaging > MMS > Menu > Options > Account Settings > Menu > MMSC Settings
Create a new item:
Name: Cingular MMS (But you can call it anything you want)
MMSC URL: http://mmsc.cingular.com
WAP Gateway: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Connect via: The Internet
Max Sending Size: 300k
WAP Version: WAP 2.0
Cheers
What most likely will break is if you use wifi or your AS connection. It seems the settings are backwards on this device. And if you get that working, it will alwasy try to use a gprs connection even when a wifi or as connection is available.
Kind of sucks!
Proxy while using WiFi
Because Cingular uses a proxy setting you will not be able to use the WiFi as stated in the post above. You really do not need the proxy settings in to access the internet. I have had many devices with WiFi and have disabled the proxy on all of them and have been able to access full internet. With the proxy set you will only be able to get to "pda" or tiny screen sites. Try it out and let me know if it works. I have been thinking of getting either the HTC version or the Samsung Blackjack. I would rather have this one becuase I would prefer the WiFi over the 3G.
What are you thoughts?
Cingular MEdia Net
Wow...there is a GOD.
I made it a goal to get MEdia Net working on my phone, afterall, I am paying $20 a month for it. Like other users, I could get to any website, but not MEdia Net. This also happened after I upgraded the ROM (to remove the T-Mobile branding). I tried all suggested settings for IE, GPRS, and Proxy all from the various forums - xda, hofo, Cingular FAQ, called Cingular tech support. Nothing was working. Tonight I was farting around and stumbled upon this thread. I tried the Proxy settings above, and still nothing. I made several other changes and here is what I have now...
IE: tools/options/connections
Unchecked - Automatically Detect Settings
"Select Network" - Work
GPRS:
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.cingular
User Name(CAPS): [email protected]
password(CAPS): CINGULAR1
Primary DNS: 66.209.11.61
Proxy:
Connects from: The Internet
Connects to: Work
Proxy (name: port): 66.209.11.61:9201
Type: WAP
I know just like everyone else that MEdia Net itself does not have much to offer, but it was pi$$ing me off that it was not working. Now that I have it working though, I understand that there is a newer version of MEdia Net out or something?
when i had the cingular 2.06 rom my mms limit was 600k. Since upgrading to XDAlive and having to manually enter the media net and mms setting i'm limited to 300k. did anyone else notice this

Check the Wiki for the registry tweak to add 600k MMS. Involves changing one value and making one more.
I forgot the exact details (location of keys/values) off the top of my head but it involved changing SendDataLimit to 4 (or next number higher) and making SendData4 value = 614400 D_WORD(decimal)
Thats off memory...so double check the wiki.
Interesting here as too (have AT&T Wirless) and both MEdianet and Cellular Video were (apparently) removed with a cooked WM6.1 ROM...
Not really a biggie, but I wanted a 'morale victory'...to get both pages (URLs) to work with Mobile IE (without having to tweak/modify any connection settings..
Cellular video is: http://cingularvideo.cingular.com
Alternative MEdianet is http://infospace.com/infow.sbcw/
Because a I recently received a AT&T MEdianet email advising me of a lot of customization changes...and wanted to see what was up...
Both pages report: We are temporarily experiencing technical difficulites

T-Mobile Web $5.99 on WM6.1 "Rickwatt"

Does anyone has unlimited access to Web, emails with T-Mobile Web $5.99 hacked working properly?
Please help, I can't access to Internet
Adavid
Timely question as I have been wrestling with the very same issue for the past 36 hours.
My phone also has the RW 6.1 ROM and I activated T-Zones a day and a half ago. I've followed the hack instructions on "dashapps" to the letter, booted and rebooted several times, yet no internet. I either get a "$MESSAGE$..." or "you cannot access.." message when I try to connect.
I read on another HTC (non-Excalibur) board that T-Mobile has closed this loophole: can anyone definitively verify? There's a member here -- JDOGG*** something that says he works for TMo, so maybe he knows for sure.
I hate to be the noob that asks the same question that's been answered a dozen times, but... I've scoured this board and followed all the hack instructions EXACTLY -- several times -- and still no luck, so I'm at a loss for solutions.
Any and all guidance is genuinely appreciated. Thank you.
i've had the $5.99 working for quite some time working with:
autosync/exchange
iris browser/pocket IE
IM+ (IM program)
VNC viewer
also, i'm using 6.1 & followed the dashapps hack w/ no issues. not sure what else to tell you guys.
Yes, the $5.99 proxy hack doesn't work in some regions (usually those with the highest data traffic.) For everyone else, it works perfectly, with the exception of a few apps that aren't proxy aware.
A related question which may help solve my issue:
Within "Connections" there are two GPRS choices: #5, "GPRS Settings" and #6, "GPRS". For "GPRS Settings" I have the option of authenticating using PAP or CHAP: which do I use?
Also, is there a preferred setting for "Disconnect GPRS When Dropped"? (Preferred in the sense that it may effect my ability to connect to the internet.)
Thanks again.

$5.99 Setting for WM6.1.....URGENT
ralph1o1 cal you write it down your phone set up?
I called T-mobile Yesterday to do the setting and the Lady toll me that I have to get the $19.99 plan to get access with WM6.1, I'm pretty sure a few peoples of "T-mobile support" doesn't have a idea when you change OS doesn't come with the original phone.
If you can bring me the setting I appreciated.
By the way..I went back to WM6 to try and I had access to T-Zones thru "winwap" but I didn't have the $5.99 plan to try it.

Please Help To Set Up Internet With $5.99 Plan
:d
My GPRS is set to PAP, but the other settings mentioned are the same. Here are my settings:
Under GPRS, I have three connections:
The first and third are labeled T-Mobile Data and T-Mobile WModem Link and are both setup the same:
Connects to: WAP Network
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
Other settings are blank, except for the DNS entries are all 0.0.0.0.
The second connection is labeled T-Mobile MMS:
Connects to: Work
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
Other settings are blank, except for the DNS entries are all 0.0.0.0.
Now onto the proxies...I have two setup:
Tzones Proxy:
Connects from: WAP Network
Connects to: The Internet
Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP
Username and Password are both blank.
Tzones Proxy2:
Connects from: Work
Connects to: The Internet
Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP
Username and Password are both blank.
I live in Ohio and it works all over the state and Michigan, if that matters at all.
Let us know if these settings work for you.

let me get this straight...you put a cooked copy of 6.1 on your phone....you then call tmobile and tell them that your new unsupported cooked rom wont let you access the whole net on the 5.99 hack plan like the wm6 did.
you do realize that the whole concept of what we are doing here has totally escaped you.
Yah just follow the instructions below and you should be able to access it.
Thanks guyz....
Thanks to you gauyz....jdoggraz and unasari1

Portable hotspot solution for simple mobile users with SGH-T989

As I could not find a thread about this specifically, I am posting this solution as it works for me.
On the Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 is where this pertains to though other users might encounter similar problem with other phones on simple mobile.
Stock 2.3.6 Rom
When you turn on the portable hotspot feature with this phone, what it does is disconnect your "Simple Mobile" APN and inserts and connects using a new APN called "Tethering". When you try connecting with your PC to your hotspot's ssid, it takes you to a web page on t-mobile.com informing you with an error 503 or some other error stating that its not available. I assume t-mobile is detecting that you are not their customer and blocks it.
it takes you here:
-------------------------------------------------------
http://androidapi.t-mobile.com/apppack/mvno.html
Error 503--Service Unavailable
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
10.5.4 503 Service Unavailable
The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. If known, the length of the delay may be indicated in a Retry-After header. If no Retry-After is given, the client SHOULD handle the response as it would for a 500 response.
Note: The existence of the 503 status code does not imply that a server must use it when becoming overloaded. Some servers may wish to simply refuse the connection.
---------------------------------------------------------
The reason is because that APN tries to connect to "pcweb.tmobile.com". What you have to do is once you activate your hotspot, you have to edit the apn (while it is running) and change it from pcweb.tmobile.com to simple.
No other setting is needed. I am using "APN manager" which I paid for on the market and it is well worth it. I have used it for other purposes besides this and it allows you to edit the APN while it is live. Hope this helps other simple mobile users...
Also, you have to edit this "Tethering" APN every time you run the hotspot and delete the last one as it will just keep adding the new one with the t-mobile settings every time.
Anyone else out there with another solution please post it..

Looks like a good alternative. Thanks..

Thanks!
This thread saved me! While I did not follow the instructions, it got me thinking to check the apn settings on my phone. As it turned out my apn was changed to a different apn when i turned on my hotspot and all I had to do was select my original apn again and tethering began to work! Awesome!
I'm using a freetel FTU152D (Samurai Kiwami) on Simple Mobile. It does change the APN every time I turn on the Hotspot, but fixing the APN settings doesn't seem to do anything; other devices connect to the wifi, but still can't see the internet. Meanwhile, I still have internet access on the FTU152D. Any ideas?

Questions re Network/APN (and also #*#*4636*=*#) for best LTE, VoLTE, or nearest ther

Hi..
I bought an unlocked HTC 10 from HTC a few months ago. My carrier is TMOUS. I have read a few places around XDA and Reddit that the HTC SIM-unlocked phones on TMOUS experience erratic signal strength and/or coverage for voice, data, MMS, etc. at times.
ThinKing I might investigate this by looking at the APN settings, I checked my phone to examine the the specifics of my APN configuration, and I noticed several items that were missing from most of the "2016 TMO APN Settings" found around the web. Specifically, the settings under MMSC and APN Type seemed to be incomplete or incorrect.
After changing some settings of the APN settings above, and also going into "#*#*4636*#*#" under "Phone Information" and changing more, I lost all data and voice for a few minutes. I simply rebooted to get those original settings back, butreboot and get things back but now I would really like to know what the settings those T-Mobile customers who purchased their HTC 10s from TMO before they abandoned their sale of them. I also would be interested in anyone suggestions on how I might keep new settings if a reboot just restores the original settings.
Specifically (as far as settings) I am curious as to the settings they have for their main APN, and also what is set for "Set Preferred Network Type" under the menu/settings when "#*#*4636*#*#" is typed and you go into "phone information". The correct setting is a list of protocols. I have checked around the web and cannot seem to select the right list of protocols on this phone, so I am really puzzled as to the right setting.
Ant help would be appreciated...!

download the tmobile app. in the app, you can run some diagnostics and one of the tests will tell you if your APN info needs an update and you can update it from there. its all very easy, just download the app and run the tests.

Thank you! The list of things after APN Type is great...All I had was "default, supl"! Also thank you for that "Set Preferred Network" of GSM, WCDMA, LTE (Auto).
However, what's really strange is that I don't have an option for "APN Protocol" nor "APN Roaming Protocol"...so i can't specify the IP protocol.
I was hoping to enter IP protocol because I read that T-Mobile now has IPv6 up and running.... soooo if you change "APN Protocol" to IPv6, you should experience a better signal as IPv6 is probably only being used as overflow right now.
Try it (if you want) and let me know if you experience any difference.
EDIT: One more question..under Settings-> Mobile Data -> Preferred Network"?
I have two choices: Global or GSM/WCDMA/LTE. Right now I have global selected, but don't know which one is correct. What is yours set to?

Which T-Mobile app? There are like 5 of them.
I installed the one just called T-Mobile and it said "T-Mobile is hitting some rough waters and isn't available right now", so it may not like the fact that I am rooted, S-off, etc. But I'm not sure....

Make sure to choose GSM/WCDMA/LTE, Global would be for international usage.

Which T-Mobile app? There are like 5 of them.
I installed the one just called T-Mobile and it said "T-Mobile is hitting some rough waters and isn't available right now", so it may not like the fact that I am rooted, S-off, etc. But I'm not sure....

The "T-Mobile" one, not my tmobile or any other varation. I'm rooted, s-off, sunshine, so that shouldnt matter.

Thanks, syntropic

Just convert it to T-Mobile then flash a custom rom with with carrier options in aroma installer. Choose T-Mobile and your good to go.
One thing you must do first is s-off via sunshine.

I'm s-off already, so I'm good to go...But what do you mean convert to T-Mobile? When I got this phone and put my T-mobile SIM card in, and started it for the first time, it pre-selected T-Mobile network and took a few minutes to configure (and presumably the correct bands and frequencies) automatically.
When I go into "Select Network operator" only T-Mobile and AT&T are working choices...and T-Mobile has a start next to it likely indicating it's the proper network for this phone.
So I think it's already a "T-Mobile" phone.

change cid to T-Mobile cid and flash ruu. Then you will have T-Mobile radio. When Android N comes it should be fixed on us unlocked versions. I have 2 10s and ones on T-Mobile and other us unlocked and on us unlocked band 12 is unstable where I'm at so I get all the problems you described.

Thank you... Do you think it would be possible to just change the CID and create a SDcard zip file with TMO firmware. In the past (with my HTC M8) I have extracted the components from a stock ROM.zip (which I got from an RUU) and created a firmware zip which simply updated my firmware and didn't wipe internal storage flash stock recovery, etc, etc....
I guess my question is...provided I create the bootable external SD firmware.zip correctly and also change the CID, is this a feasible plan?

yes it may be possible but I'm pretty sure data is going to need to be wiped. When I used the firmware zip method to convert to T-Mobile my data wouldn't work without doing the ruu first then waiting till it booted fully first. Then proceeded to install twrp and custom rom. So if you end up with data problems then you must ruu.
I have the latest ruu for T-Mobile I just haven't uploaded it yet. If you need it let me know.

Uploading the latest RUU would be amazingly helpful!!
One of the reasons I am hesitant to RUU this phone is because I'm on the HTC build 1.96.617.2 (and an OTA waiting if I want to install it manually), but the TMO RUU I found in this forum is 1.80.xxx...which I believe is from last June. I didn't really want to go back to that older build...
EDIT: I was going to change my CID, but just realized I have no idea what the T-Mobile CID or MID actually are. Could you possibly do a "getvar all" (or if you already know it). I searched around for it but only found HTC CIDs and obviously SuperCID.

Sprint Hotspot Hack w/ Android 10

I lost my hotspot hack when I updated my Sprint S10 to Android 10 like everyone else but I just found a fix! It works on my S10 so I’m guessing it’ll work the same for S10+ users.
##3282# then APN Settings
(The left clicking to unlock editing doesn’t work anymore like you all said)
Go into APN2 and take pictures with another device of all the settings
Go back and click ADD next to Access Point Names
Fill in the data identical to the original APN2 data except APN TYPE add dun between mms and xcap
Upper right hand menu and SAVE
You will now have two APN2. Select the one that has DUN in the APN type and hit the left arrow next to Access Point Names to set it.
Crazy enough it worked!
It works but for some reason it's not near as fast as the s10 plus running Android 9 and hacking that the old way.... I play gta online I can't load other players with my hotspot but my wife's phone (still on Android 9) will let me load other players anyone know a work around for this

Use a vpn. It seems its being detected as media and such thats throttled. Of course in order for the vpn to work on the connected device it has to be run from the connected device.

If your phone is unlocked 000000
If it is not, ie leased phone, you'll have to see if sprint will give it up.
I lost hotspot on s9 plus going to android 10. Worked flawlessly through oreo and pie. Not impressed by Android 10 either. Hopefully I'll be able to downgrade without too much hassle.
Downgraded s9 plus last night to restore hotspot workaround. Crappy part is that I'm in an area that doesn't offer a comparable internet.

I know its been awhile, but ive figured out that in order to use anything xbox related regardless of vpn you need to use the Public IP addon from sprint. I believe its only $2.99 extra/month. Thats what i had to do in order to use xbox live via my hotspot.

Creating the new APN after getting the android 10 upgrade and it worked for me, but it appears Sprint has UDP blocked. I noticed this affecting me on Discord voice chat and loading roblox games.
Following Discord's advice, I went here https://test.webrtc.org/ and it showed no UDP.
UDP is a bit beyond my understanding. No idea how to get past this issue.

haha yea.. things like this is why they set limits/restrictions on hotspot to begin with..
sprints network (and most mobile networks) arent made to handld continuous live gaming..
back when i used to work for uscellular it was even in their policies as being against the rules.. that as well as things like continuous p2p streaming, torrents n other stuff..
i wouldnt b surprised if in the future carriers remove the ability to edit apns altogether since this is how ppl have been bypassing restrictions for years.
Ok after a little poking around, it seems the Mobile virtual network operator info is a double-edged sword here. By default on Sprint, it is set to None. By setting it to GID, you are unmonitored, but UDP does not work. Once I remade it without MVNO set, I connected to Discord voicechat just fine. Then some updates ate all my data.
I'm not sure if removing xcap from the APN Type list had any affect, but I both added it back in and removed MVNO before I ate all my hotspot.
I rebuilt it again without xcap or an MVNO, but the damage had already been done and I'm throttled. I'll be back with an update at the start of my next billing cycle (or sooner if things start working in my favor!)
Edit: Also, any changes seemed to kill my MMS. Swapping back to default immediately downloaded the message. hmm...
Edit2: oops! So it's important to note that there should be no spaces in your APN Type field. It's not a valid character, so nothing after default was loaded. Nice. And MMS is back as well. Still throttled internet, but at least one thing is resolved...
Did the most recent update break this method?

try it and report back.. theres literally no harm in trying
Here's my update. Once I rebooted everything, I was able to get highspeed hotspot back. It has been working ever since, just not UDP things still like Discord voice chat or Roblox.
Further update, Sprint has increased all hotspot allotments to 20GB for 2 billing cycles. We'll see if this gets pushed out. If you don't use any more than that, then don't worry about this process for now (always good to know things though).
My method:
- Manually copy over all settings (write it down so you have it because a profile update will wipe new APNs)
- add ,dun to the end of the APN Type line.
- copied the APN Name exactly, but added a 2 to the end (I don't think this matters, but just in case!)
Weird note though. I downloaded a game off of Steam on friday. While downloading, I would periodically check the My Sprint app to see if my hotspot usage moved. It did, but in an unsuspected way. After downloading the first GB, my hotspot usage would say "Used 0.0001 / 20 GB" and would tick up similarly for each GB downloaded. I paused it to make sure I didn't get any "used 75%" texts or emails, but they never came. So after 18GB, it said "Used 0.0018 / 20 GB", or 1.8 MB...how strange...

Sorry if that was misleading. Your original APN from Sprint should have said "default, mms, xcap, supl" so you will still have to add all that and add dun to the end.
