Hello.
My G3 is about 3-4 months old now. Since my purchase everything works like it should, except that it stopped connecting to computers properly. In the first few weeks it worked like a charm: Plug-in the cable, select the SD-connect thingy and the SD folder pops up on the computer screen. Same as most other phones working with SD cards. But since a few weeks it won't popup the SD folder. Also, it's unfindable in the 'Computer' directory; the place where all portable hard drives usually become visible.
Some facts:
There's nothing wrong with the SD card itself. Apart from the PC connectivity it works like a charm and is brand new.
I've tried to connect to 3 different computers with 3 different cables. All with the same result.
All 3 computers do recognize my phone. It's actually visible under Device Management in the Control Panel as a 'HID'. I've actually tried using the LG PC suite bull**** program which worked fine, but really slow and buggy (though irrelevant since it shouldn't be necessary in the first place).
Phone recognition sequence: 1. Computer starts to install driver thingies (or whatever it does, it's the same as always when you plug-in a USB for the first time). 2. Nothing.
As usual, the phone offers some options after plugin, when I scroll down the upper bar. When I press 'Charging..." nothing happens. When I press 'Charge Phone' this option menu pops up, which completely neutralizes my logics: This was never necessary to connect to my computer at all. I've also yet to understand these options and their functions fully. I believe it has something to do with the LG PC suite. I made screenshots, but this forum does not allow me to post those yet.
Nevertheless, I just want to go back to the original "plugin to pc --> select SD card --> browse and copy" way of transferring files... I've searched everywhere in the phone settings to solve my problem, but without succes, obviously.
Can anyone help me?
Cheers!!

Hi all,
I just got my Defy, and trying to plug the usb with my imac, however every time I plugged in, Mac said cant detect my device.
It also crashed my LauncherPro menu too .... I need to reboot to fix that..
any ideas about that ? Thank you
Have you tried w/o Launcher Pro?
I think I might be about to make my very first *useful* contribution here on XDA.
I too had the same problem connecting the Defy to my Macbook Pro. The dialogue box said something like "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" Whaaat? Not even as a removable device?
I remembered with the Samsung Galaxy that in the settings there were a certain number of 'modes' you could set the phone into before connecting to a computer. So I went about my investigation with the Defy.
I have only JUST found this out myself:
Plug the device into your computer ignore the dialogue box that appears.
On the phone navigate to the top status bar, on the opposite side of the battery and time icons there should be a USB icon. If so, touch the bar and swipe down.
Here under 'Ongoing' should be USB connection. Select to manage & there you have some options. Memory card access is what I believe you want.
After your selection the external memory card should appear instantly on your desktop as a removable device. Also I have found the Defy remembers this selection for next time, so when you plug the USB in again, you shouldn't have to mess about with any settings.
Hope this was what you were looking for and I hope this was of help to someone at least!
Hopefully you guys can help me out. I'm suddenly having issues with my phone not being detected by my PCs when it is connected via USB.
When i plug my phone into my PC, i receive the error message: "UBS Device not Recognized One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windowes does not recognize it." from my Windows XP PC. My Windows 7 PC is unable to recognize the device plugged in.
The strange thing is that even though my phone is not being recognized by the PCs, the phone will still charge.
The phone is not in USB Debugging Mode, and I've gone ahead and flashed 2 separate Kernals on my phone, but i still am having this issue. I have tested this out with 3 USB cables, on 3 separate computers (Work (win xp), Home (win7), and friends(win7)).
2 Days ago the USB worked fine for me as i was able to flash Franco Kernal and JB onto my Gnex, but suddenly it's not being recognized by my computer anymore.
Stumped.....Hoping that this isn't a hardware issue and something that i can fix without having any downtime away from my phone.
Any thoughts?
Try other USB port and other USB cable.
Sounds like you're missing some drivers... Remove the device completely in Device Manager & plug it again. For MTP, Windows 7 should find the drivers online by itself. If you need fastboot access, you'll have to download the seperate drivers for that. I'd recommend the GNex Toolkit in that case since it comes with the drivers included (you'll still need to install them of course )

Thx for the reply,
Yes, I have been using the GNEX tool kit, though not the 7.3 version that was released today. The 7.2 version was being used at home and on my work PC. I usually install the drivers from the toolkit then plug my phone in when done. The drivers have been recognizing my phone but not since 2 days go.
I'm currently trying to find the MTP checkbox in the phone Settings to double check if it's checked, but im having problems locating it.

Ah yes, that is where it was hiding....But unfortunately the checkbox is checked.
This seems like a hardware issue, but I'm not certain since the phone still recharges when plugged in

Could be... Charging doesn't necessary have anything to do with data transfer AFAIK... Do you see something in the Device Manager when you plug it? You might have to right click & do a re-scan to force detection.

Device Managers shows "Samsung Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface". The drivers look to be installed.
Also another odd thing, is that after i charge my phone and unplug it from my PC, it will continue to show that it is charging on the lock screen and in the top right corner of my phone. However if i go into Settings ---> about phone. It shows Battery Status : Not Charging.

You get that when the phone is running normally? I think for me that one only shows up when I put it in bootloader mode. In MTP mode it's just a media device like any other AFAIK... I'll check tomorrow when I'm back on my Windows laptop to be sure . Have you tried putting it in PTP mode? If so do you see the device as a camera or is it the same issue?

Sounds like a software bug, but I'll admit it is a bit strange considering your main issue...

Basically the way the Nexus One talked to other systems through USB is completely different from the way the Galaxy Nexus does. The GN uses a new protocol called MTP. Your car stereo probably can't read the files on your phone because it doesn't have MTP support.
Phantom Charging Issue
So I've gone ahead and Fiddled around with my phone for the past day trying to fix my USB issue, and I've discovered that this issue may not be due to USB issues.
Throughout the day when i was playing around and trying to fix my USB recognizing issue, it miraculously started working again. Now I am able to connect to my PCs and transfer the desired files.
Upon this issue being resolved, i noticed that periodically the screen would turn on, on it's own while being off in the locked state. I observed this issue to see what may be causing this, and it is turning on due to my phone thinking that i plugged my micro USB cable in to charge it. The charging indicator on the batter flips on, and even the USB Debugger / MTP Notification is present in the notification drawer.
Apparently this is a known issue with the Battery or charging port with Gnex's. (See below the 2 youtube clips for more details for problem/fix.)

I believe my warranty is void since this phone was purchased in a different country and has had the bootload locked/unlocked a million times. Anyone else have this problem that they have been able to fix manually? Or am I going to have to cross my fingers, ship my phone to get it fixed, and hope the post man doesn't f**k up?

For the last 3 months, whenever I have connected my phone to the computer with the USB cable, I would get a little pop-up screen on the PC with about 5 options to select from: sync my phone, see the folders and files, etc. I have not seen that little box in about 4 days.
Luckily, when I bring up Windows Explorer (file manager), the PC does recognize the phone in the USB port and I can proceed as normal. I really have no need to sync my phone anyways but I am curious what happened. I have removed the battery more than once, using the same USB cable I have used for 3 months, and reinstalled the drivers just in case. Rooted with the LIH Jellybean leak. Any ideas where the USB pop-up screen has gone? Thanks.

Computer glitch not phone glitch =p It usually goes away when you accidentally press "always use this" or something similar. I cant remember how to reset that
Bought the 'official' usb to usb3 lead from the Play store. When I tried connecting to my Macbook Pro the Android File Transfer can't find the Nexus. I thought it might be the USB Debugging needs enabling so I did that. Nope. Maybe the Android File Transfer needed updating so updated it. No joy. I'm a bit lost now, can anyone shed any light on my problem?
Mine would say something about the screen being locked even though it wasn't.. When you plug it in, pull down the notification drawer and tap the Choose More USB Options, or whatever it says. Make sure File Transfer is selected and try again.. took mine a few times of switching between FTP and Charging but it works with my Mac now

Ok, thanks, I'll try switching between MTP and charging a few times like that.
I have no trouble. Have a 2012 MBP using El Capitan.

More thanks. I had to switch it between charging and MTP 5 times to get it but it worked in the end.
Is there any way to making the MTP setting sticky for trusted devices? When you connect with usb debugging, it asks you to verify and save the device. If something like that was possible with this setting, you could have the security of not auto enabling when charging from random devices but the convenience when connected to your own remembered computer.
This solved my problem!

I have a SM-N930W8 (Canada) and when I plug into my PC nothing happens, the phone charges but no device on the PC (using Windows 7 x64). I have had Samsung USB drivers installed for ages (both S3 and S5 work fine). Appreciate any help!
With USB-C you have to tap the notification after plugging in and then a menu will pop up giving you the option to charge, charge another device with your phone, transfer files, etc. Select the obvious choice and you should be on your way.
I had to enable developer options then it started to work, it didn't out of the box when plugged in. Thanks though.
My phone came today. It never occured to me you wouldn't get a notification ala Nexus 6P that allowed you to choose the USB mode. My phone also didn't connect and didn't throw a notification so I had to search USB in the settings and change the mode to file. After several reboots it now throws up a toast asking if I want file transfer without me having ever done anything to precipitate such a menu showing. That is stil a fail because it doesn't offer all the options USB-C is capable of and you have to go to go into settings to get that. Large blunder if you ask me, there is no reason not to throw up a notification and allow you to change it without having to menu dive.
I never had an issue getting the menu to appear on my Canadian Note 7.
Also, USB Type-C has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Yeah it's odd I have the N930W8 as well and got nothing plugging it in off the bat, oh well if anything it reminded me of developer options where I set the transition animations to 0.5, a little thing I always did
what did I do wrong. i have not had any issues with my phone connecting to my windows 10 desktop until today. now when i connect to my desktop the phone simply charges. I get no notification and i cant find any settings related to mounting device. just stopped working. only thing I can think of is i installed Nova Launcher. got it fixed
