Why is the SW3 LCD such crappy quality? - Sony Smartwatch 3

went to go check it out at sony store to compare against moto360. The lcd of the SW3 is dull, washed out when you stack against moto. It resisted me from now ever considering SW3..

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
You obviously have less then no understanding of the differing screen technologies and also seem to lack the intelligence to make a worthwhile contribution to a forum concerning a product.

I would say you need to look at them in the sunlight without the backlight on to see why sony uses the screen they did.

dont get your panties in a bunch.
I love to own worthy sony products like z ultra, and even SW2 back in stone age.. but come on.. you cant deny the moto360 watch lcd is WAY inferior than this SW3
Yea moto360 has sunlight mode where it can be read very easily.
I am just warning people who are interested in either Moto360 or SW3 and the LCD quality is their no.1 priority, skip the SW3 for sure!
but do your own due dilligence as well

The sony sw3 and the moto are made for different people. So if you don't like the sw3 move on and I'll keep mine.

I seen the same type of post in a review.
My 2 cents is the screen is the best for a smartwatch.
I owned many and you can not see the watch outside in direct sunlight ambient mode, this watch you can.
I created a Facer Face, Digital large font and the only time I need to turn on the backlight is when it is completely dark.

here is a mediocre at best review of the SW3 from a trusted editor...
it may be nice for runners who utilize its GPS .. but this watch really lacks in style.. i couldnt see myself wearing this at cocktail parties or meetings.. lol i would look like a dork!

I can see my watch in any ambient light, inculding direct sunlight, without activating the backlight. :good:
No backlight, = no battery wasted into lighting. :good:
no battery wasted into lighting = 2 days of use, while still being able to see time at a glance. :good:
If I want to look at an impressive screen, I'll pull my G3 out of my pocket. Why bother making a 1.6" screen look really nice? That's not the point of a smartwatch. Why is everybody getting hung up on color quality of a 1.6" screen?
Most likely, I'm preaching to the choir, since most people reading this are probably already SW3 owners. In that case, Congrats on your smart purchase. :good:

Got my ZL today...

...and will send it back tomorrow.
It's a pity, the display is even worse than my 2 year old LG optimus speed, and I'm not talking about the viewing angles. Colours are washed out far more as expected, the icons look terrible compared to my old phone. I tried to calibrate the display as mentioned somwhere here, didn't get better.
Besides the display the vibration sucks. I like typing text with a little vibration, but ZL is far too loud. I cant't feel vibration, I just hear it.
I wanted a new phone to make a step forward, but not in this direction...
Damn,I'm really disappointed, I thought this is THE phone for me...

I am planning to get the white one, then see your post.I've experienced the same screen color issue with The Xperia T
I think you mean realistic display rather than over saturated crap that's on most phones. I actually find the display
Temperature with the styling quite mature and refreshing.
The vibration needs some tweaking but it's not a deal breaker.

Vibration can be set to low there's an option in the menu, seems like you never liked the zl from the start. Most of things you are complaining can be fixed, well except the viewing angles

I find it comical that members feel the need to open a new thread only to voice their displeasure. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck with whichever device you obtain next. I wish I had such trivial things to fixate on as vibration sensation.
I had a previous unit where the vibration was loud it made a very cheap sound. I eventually replaced the unit due to a bad camera everything was noisy. My new unit is much better, the vibration is no longer strange in any way. Maybe some bad units going around.

Lol... yes, that's why i bought it...
Do you mean the colors are washed out head on? If thats the case, then you should try getting a different unit. My screen looks really good. Its only when you tilt it does the screen wash out real quick. It sucks and detracts the quality of the phone, but the pros of the ZL far outweigh something which wont matter to me as i rarely look at the screen from an angle.
As for the vibration, I didn't notice yet before you mentioned it. But yes, it does seem a little weak.
I got my phone like 3 days ago, not having any issues with it. Screen looks great while watching videos or playing games. I don't need that blue tint or any of those oversaturated crap.

Yep, thats why I absolutely detest AMOLED screens! However, no reason Sony couldnt have put in a LCD that looks as good as the One X. The screen on that phone is spectacular

up to the user
I just read this thread now and I agree good luck to you on whichever phone you like and hopefully it is all you want it to be.
I have now gotten into a seemingly 6 months or less cycle before I decide to try something new...ugh
The only thing I have to say is having an unlocked phone is so much better as you are not tied into the cell providers Android update cycle (if they want it) and their bloatware.
One more thing, having had a note I am not a fan in general of the crazy colore on the AMOLED screens.
As it is it is a feeling - I just love my ZL (and my Nexus 4 is going bye bye - I do have a Nexus 10)

As compare to Nexus 4,How is looking your Xperia ZL Colors(I'm not asking about viewing angle), is it possible to Put Stock Android in Zl if yes anyone try it,How the experience feel with stock?
hmm
Those over saturated screens make the screen look amazing. Why did you guys choose to get an xperia? I'd rather get the s4 because its easier to root and plus there's always a ton of ROMs for it
I like Sony for their design. If samsung would change the design from plastic to something better then I wouldn't mind buying one from Samsung. The phone feel too light and like holding a toy in your hand...

The colors seem very comparable, neither phone has over-saturated colors. The ZL screen is gorgeous, but if you are looking for a deal, the Nexus is it for 350.

Screen tech is a matter of personal choice. Those over saturated colors give me a raging headache if i look at the screen for a long time, i.e playing games, watching movies. I dont know how exactly to put this but LCD screens just LOOK more sophisticated and toned down. Uhh, like a printed sheet of paper. Unlike AMOLED which looks like a kindergarten kid went wild with crayons on the screen.
And Samsung phones easier to root? Building ROMS for them are a PITA. Ask every single dev who has completely abandoned Samsung phones. there might be plenty of ROMs sure, but all of them have some or the other problem. Not to mention the fact that Samsung are a bunch of liars.

Completely agree, here. I came to the ZL from nothing but Samsung phones (Captivate, Galaxy Nexus, SGS3), and I much prefer the ZL's screen to any Samsung phone screen. For one, I can never read Sammy screens when outdoors on a cloudless sunny day, even with the brightness at maximum. I have had no issues reading the ZL screen in the same conditions, which I'll take over better viewing angles and oversaturated colors any day. As for comparing to LG screens, well, if I'm not mistaken, LG also makes amoled screens, so I wouldn't expect much different than Sammy screens there -- last I checked, the two were suing each other over the technology. The ZL compared to the N4 -- I must say, I finally saw an N4 in person this past weekend, and the screen on it is quite beautiful. I still like my ZL, though, and the lack of LTE radios in the N4 makes it a non-issue for me, no matter how pretty the phone might be (and I'm not keen on a glass back anyways).
I do agree that it would have been great had Sony used something as nice as the LCD in the One X, though. That screen was amazing looking (I had the pleasure of seeing one in person when my brother had a One X for awhile).
Good luck to the OP in finding a device that meets those expectations -- the ZL is the first AT&T LTE capable unlocked phone to hit the USA, and that's a big part of why it intrigued me, too. I suspect it'll be awhile before there's another device like that ...

The watch has glass screen - fingerprints will be noticeable, metal case - that one is solid, and cheap silicone/rubber wristband - sort of a dust magnet, no way around it since it's not replaceable. The value of TS is not in a rubber wristband, but in the watch itself

I can understand and appreciate your response.
By the way I want to go out my way to express to you my sincere appreciation of you making sure you addressed the speakerphone matter that I had raised in earlier posts. You are the first and only one who has addressed the issue and let us know that the speakerphone is plenty loud enough for calls, something I decried about the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
By the way that was the best user review I have seen on a phone or watch phone. Everyone ghets into all of these specifications and technical matters and forget to cover the basics like "how does the watch feel, look---is it too large---is the screen really visible---If I make a call can I hear the other person and vice versa---all of these nonthechnical matters that go into an everyday user experience (and not from a developers or customizer's perspective) you attempted to cover and quite well I might add.
I can't wait for you to be able to report on the companion, bluetooth tethering capabilities of the watch if that ever comes to be. But for all of us nontechies your review and evaluation has been heaven sent

Reviews like his take a lot of load off the developers and is very much appreciated. Doesn't mean there won't a developer review but in this case his review definitely give us some breathing room and time to actually use the TS vs fixing things. For example, I still have yet to actually play with mine yet and I've had it over a week now.
Thank you all for the kind words! As you have seen from my Index Review page on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192333 I take every review very seriously, either if its $5 screen protector or $15 case or $200 smartwatch or $500 headphones. I actually started doing these reviews with a main intent to answer questions left open by all those other "pro" dry reviews on specialized websites where they list spec, summarize their opinion in one paragraph and post a bunch of picture that still doesn't provide a clear "picture" of the product. I also hated user reviews posted in the forum with low res picture shots from a phone in poor lighting. But anyway...
TS shaping up to be a great product with unlimited capabilities. For those interested to start testing Companion app, make sure to check Kurt's G+ page with instructions (the references were provide in the latest KS update), and for those who already have the watch - YOU MUST flash it with Loki's latest ROM. It's not even a matter of question.

Does your above post indicate that there is a Companion app or tool that is now available, but being tested and refined. If so that is great news and puts me in the position of making my purchase
Excelent review, I can't wait more for mine.

Hello vectron,
Thanks for your good and detailed review.
I am currently using a MetaWatch Frame. I tried also Sony SmartWatch 2, but the vibration motor was too loud, so I returned it. All people around me would have heard every mail or SMS I got with this loud vibration.
The vibration of the MetaWatch is discreet, like it should be.
I saw in your reviews, that you tested a MetaWatch Frame.
1. Is the vibration of the Omate TrueSmart loud or discreet?
2. Is the vibration on the Omate TS louder than the MetaWatch Frame? How is the vibration of the TS compared with the MetaWatch Frame?
3. Did you also try the Sony SmartWatch 2? If yes, how is the vibration loudness of the TS compared with the Sony Smartwatch?

Good questions. As you have seen, I been working with MetaWatch for awhile and have//reviewed their STRATA/FRAME models - the main purpose is to receive email notifications and not to miss calls. The vibration is just perfect with MW. I can't comment on SW2. I'm on the list of Sony accessory reviewers and have talked to their PR firm about review sample. Unfortunately, they are delaying sending review products, and I have a feeling it has something to do with a lot of recent posts about quality control (people have screen popping off, problem with buttons, etc).
For me personally, Notification feature is #1 requirement for TS. But it's still in alpha testing and I wasn't able to get it to work yet, possible due to some setup issues. Trust me, as soon as I have a more stable release version and can get it to work on my TS - I will post a detailed review.
Another great thing Kurt is working on is OWatchOn app which turns the display on when you raise your arm. It's work in progress as well, and Kurt is fine tuning it. So far you need a specific angle/position to turn the display on, but he will add more options where you can customize it.
I tried loki's rom and didn't really like it. Back on stock now but I have installed his mod.

SmartWatch 3 is the best, yellow tint workaround

I must say Sony SmartWatch 3 is the best current smart watch as unlike other watches I own (LG G Watch, Samsung Gear S)...
I can use it outside in the sun
I can charge it using simple micro USB at work or simply anywhere without having to worry about charging cradle
I switch it off and power it on without cradle
Wifi!
GPS!
No need for switching to cinema mode when watching movies
As I wrote, it has a button so I can disable the damn touch to wake
Ambient light sensor!
When I first installed my watchface to my brand new SW3 I noticed that the white color looked indeed with yellowish tint while the tiny bit darker shade (#EEEEEE) looked like perfectly shining white. I ended up using this color for SW3 in this watchface. Is it just my mind playing tricks on me (because of all the surrounding black) or is it really white without tint?
This all makes want to try re-style the colors of the system clockwork apk and maybe system styles/colors to this shade.
Have to agree .. all the above points are valid and makes me more happy now. thanks

This is kinda on purpose. Sony opted for transflective so it can be used in sunlight very easily. The trade off is the screen quality isn't "as good" as others. But in all honesty I'd rather be able to use it outside. You get used to the yellowing and it becomes barely noticeable.
I wonder if they'll stick with transflective. Anybody know whether it's their own technology?

Transflective? No, the version of the screen they use, maybe?
Transflective has been around for a while just always called something different:
BE+: SolarbON
Boe Hydis: Viewiz
Motion Computing: View Anywhere
LG Display: Shine-Out
NEC Displays: ST-NLT
DEMCO CSI: SOLARBON
Pixel Qi: 3Qi
Panasonic: CircuLumin
Getac: QuadraClear
Dell: DirectVue or DirectView.
Sony just calls it by what the technology actually is instead of some fancy name to convince consumers theirs is better.
Since this watch is geared toward sports transflective is the best option to me, saves battery and so much easier to see.. I don't think they will go away from it unless they make multiple versions. Right now I just hope they actually release a Z4c

Interesting, but who does supply the SW3 panel? Basically I'm wondering if the technology is being developed sufficiently to keep up with AMOLED watch screens. SW3 battery life not as good as I expected, I assumed it would be better than the AMOLED watches.

Hmm I will look into it to see if I can find a manufacturer, I usually take my electronics apart and look at the parts and play with them but I haven't done it to any smartwatches yet... Just haven't had the time.
And your SW3 gets worse battery life than an AMOLED? I haven't seen that personally. My SW3 gets 2 days minimum on a charge. My Zenwatch lucky to get 1, my Gear S can get one with 30% or so left.
There are major bugs affecting battery life, and the sw3 seems more susceptible due to the transflective screen. Right now many people get hours. This is an android bug and not a function of the tech itself. Sony is working on it, but it is making many people myself included rethink the device.

On what bloody planet does the screen tech have *anything* to do with the battery drain bug!?!?
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA Free mobile app
The theory is that our screen stays in ambient mode constantly whereas most people do not let the others stay on so long due to battery drain. On our screen, ambient mode should not use much battery so we use it constantly, but on the other device gives most people leave the always on off because the screen is actually always on.
In ambient mode in addition to the normal mode, the watch is constantly connecting and disconnecting from the phone. This is triggering a drain.
If the screen is off, it is not happening.
It seems logical, but is not my theory. I am just reiterating the chatter on the other thread.
One thing I can say, our watch sleeps differently than other wear watches because of the screen. Therefore we will potentially notice wakelocks differently than them.

Huawei watch display comparison

Hey guys, I work for best buy and bought the huawei watch after some reps for the company came in to show us the Mate 7 and the watch. I ordered the mesh band and love the subtlty of the watch, but I noticed the colors are quite muted for an amoled panel compared to the urbane I had. Can anyone compare the two for me to prove I'm not crazy? Like with a Facebook notification comparison? The blues I'm sure are distinctly different between the two panels. Just want to make sure I don't have a faulty panel.

Your not crazy. I feel the same way, its also not as bright. Thinking I'm selling my huawei, and going back to my urbane. Not sure why the urbane never got the love it deserved???

I loved the urbane except for looks, the lugs I felt were manufactured way too thick. I'll probably also return the huawei and test the gear s2s classic. If I don't like that one its back to the urbane.

Disagree about the lugs, looks like most big high end watches today. I thought I would like the higher resolution and .1 in bigger display on the huawei, but I don't. Bummer.

I agree with what you are saying about the looks on the lugs. Me with my ridiculously small guy wrists means it really stands out at least on my arm. Apple watch is like the square version of huawei that's why I like the size so much.
I agree with the screen quality and noticed it right away. (not that you still think you're crazy now, lol) Having said that, I am keeping mine because I like how it looks in dim mode, which is what displays 99% of the time. Yes, I still find my Urbane and LGR better but this is still a very nice screen IMO...just needs a color calibration.

Im wondering if it has anything to do with the sapphire glass??? Sapphire glass tends to have a slight titn, along with anti reflective properties.

Could be....it's not dramatic but I'll admit, the colors tend to look washed out a little. (scale of 1-10 for color quality, I'd still give it a 7) Regarding the lugs, I agree

Yup, sending my huawei back to amazon...Bummer thought this thing would be so much better than urbane. Still not sure why the urbane has so much hate?? Its an incredible watch.

Im keeping my LGR and Urbane without a doubt! The Urbane is way too underrated... Why? I don't know.

I liked mind but it looked too much like a smart watch to me it was as wife as my wrist in a noticeable way. The Huawei is about as wide but it looks better. I'm enjoying mine more than I did my LG but that's because of the styling and the crown position is a plus

That's what I like about the Huawei. IMO, the Urbane looks like a smartwatch only because the Bezel was just thrown in there, should've been raised! (I still like it) The LGR is much better and looks/feels like a regular watch! Of course to me the winner is the Huawei but the LGR is a close second! I switch watches daily anyway, lol.
Just went back to my urbane, The screen is SO much better. Not sure WTF huawei did with this screen, but its pale colors, and dim brightness are a dealbreaker. Maybe if I didnt own an urbane, I wouldnt know what i am missing.
Same here...wore the Urbane yesterday and truly missed the Huawei. For God sakes, I'm wearing my Seamaster today and STILL miss the Huawei... I must be sick

I tried to see it and could not. I don't have a camera to take a long exposure with, though, but frankly if that is what it takes to see it, I am not all that concerned.
Edit: referring to the red tint thing.
Edit again: OK, I was able to reproduce the red tint. Don't think its a big deal at this point unless the red sub-pixels burn out.

I think whether or not it's a big deal is definitely an opinion that changes per user and that's fine. Right now I'm just trying to confirm that is does affect all devices.
Bottom line is it is a defect and not how OLED is supposed to work. It bothers me personally for a few reasons but Huawei has yet to give details on why it is happening and how it can be fixed so I don't know if I should return my watch or keep and hope.
I almost wonder if it is some kind of dumb underflow issue. Or, they intentionally add a little red to the screen to enhance low light visibility, but over simplified the approach a bit too much. Or the driver for the screen leaks some voltage. Who knows at this point.

Would you buy one now?

Need to find a replacement for my trusty Gshock that just died. Am thinking of going with a smart watch and the Huawei seems to be the best of the bunch.
With the new version coming soon, would you buy one of these now? I can't seem to find any good sales on the current watch at the moment, so would likely buy sell and hand.
Or will the existing watch go on sale when the new one is released and used prices also drop?
What real benefits is the new model likely to offer?
Anyone in the UK have a good example they are thinking of selling? Ideally with stainless strap and black would also be a plus.
Cheers

There's rumors that the HW 2 will be revealed in less than a week, so if I were you I'd wait until at least then so you'll have more facts before making a decision.

I've bought my watch about week ago and I do not regret. Great watch
well.. looking at the reviews the newer models do not seem to offer a huge improvement over the HW, and I really love everything about this watch after almost a year now
So yes, would def buy one now especially that the price is lower
You should keep an eye out on Amazon (US version). I picked up a "used - like new" Huawei watch for $124 from Amazon Warehouse. I expected it to be damaged but it was like new, except the box wasn't sealed. Really good deal and I glad I got the watch.
I bought one yesterday as I don't like the sporty look.

The watch itself is great. Android Wear 1 is a laggy though. So Android Wear 2 should make it better.
With HW 2 being too gear s3 ish and no rotating bezel.. I mean WTF - I'll probably go with the first gen HW. I just really wish it had GPS and NFC. Once it goes back to < $200 I'm grabbing one. I'll go to best buy and return it if wear 2.0 isn't what I hope it is. If thats the case, maaaybe gear s3 classic can fit the bill.
I just got my HW yesterday. I replaced my beloved Moto 360 gen 1, and I'm really glad I did. The screen is beautiful, everything about the watch screams quality, no flat tire, Wear 2.0 officially incoming. I was watching to see if the price would come down after HW 2 was revealed, but it actually went up. I got lucky and found one at pre-reveal prices. Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks "sporty" autonomous smart watches are a terrible idea.
I got my HW last week, just before the HW 2 was announced and don't regret it a bit. This is a great watch and great replacement for my Sony Smartwatch 3.

I actually have two. One with AW 2.0 DP4/5 and one still running AW 1.5 MM. Can't seem to part with either at this point. I also have a ZW2.
I have both Hwatch and ZW3, but I advise you rather buy ZW3 now (it is far newer watch with newer hardware) if your budget allows it. If not, then of course, Hwatch is a superb smartwatch, if you can find one for around 150eur.

I disagree, the ZW3 has no hear rate sensor, ugly protruding buttons and proprietary straps. The only plus is the ambient light sensor without a flat tyre

Naahh, nevermind
I ordered a Huawei Watch from Amazon and had a play, and have sent it back but may buy one again if the prices drop. It was the silver version and I would definitely want the black version. So I am keeping my eye out for deals on those. This watch is about as big as I would want to go, ideally a bit smaller.
I only played for a couple of hours and it seemed ok. The only thing I did notice, but didn't investigate too much, is that even on dim mode some of the watch faces were really bright.
I work nights and would want the watch to be stealthy at night. Is there a way to get the face really dim but still visible or is it a case of having to have the screen off? Hopefully that makes sense!
I also like the look of the LG Style (titanium) which from what I can gather is a bit smaller but has far less features. Is there anything else that might suit my needs? I may also just go for another Gshock for a few years and see how the smartwatches continue to pan out.
huawei watch 1 or zenwatch 3 ????
i love the huawei watch but zenwatch looks promising too !!!!

Zenwatch 3 for the style and new CPU, if you dont need heart rate sensor.
Hwatch is cheaper tho. Its all about preferences.
