Ok so I have a problem with some roms reading my SD properly on boot. No idea if it's a hardware or rom issue. Basically my ringtones and all will be set as UNKNOWN on boot. My music will also not appear in any media programs. At one point the problem wasn't happening on one of the tested roms but then after a 4th reboot it happened again.
The issue exists on,
Slimkat 7.0 and 9.0 (4.4.4)
SlimLP
Unofficial Cyanogen 12
LiquidSmooth Lolipop
It works properly on
CM11 nightly 2014/12/30
OctoOS Kitkat
Is the issue the roms or my phone? Is my SD+SIM reader dying? It doesn't seem to be an issue on CM11 but these other roms it is an issue. I have to test more of them to be sure. I don't want to replace the reader or the SD card if it's not a hardware issue. I will update my post with more tested roms on the issue. I didn't notice anything like it until trying slimkat and no one in the rom thread knows why it's happening so far.
It seems like any AOSP rom works fine. Not sure if all these ones with the issue are non AOSP.
This happens with all SD cards in your phone?
Unfortunately I don't have another to try but this SD card seems to work in other devices 100% properly. I'm starting to think it's some kind of permissions issue with these roms. Maybe something isn't being giving permissions properly for writing/reading to SD.
Since it works on CM11, the problem exists not just on CM-based ROMs. I don't think any special permissions are needed to read or write to an SD card unless you're trying to install apps to the SD card.
Have you tried any CAF-based ROMs. Not sure if there are any for the s3.
I would try a different SD card to see what happens. If the same thing happens, then it's a ROM issue. If not, it's an SD card issue.

But the problem DOES exist on CM12. it's in my list of roms with the issue. I have tried the SD card in other devices and it works but I don't have another SD to try in this specific phone. Plus I have become happy with CM11. I want to go on a limb and say it is a permissions issue with specific roms not getting permissions for my SD card properly. But there is nothing I can do right now to check as I only have 1 micro SD around.
CM11 and CM12 use very different kernels.
I have never seen an option to grant permissions to read/write to an SD card. What are you using to view your SD card's files? Have you tried different kernels with your favourite ROM? Have you tried different file managers?
I have a note 2 where the SD card will not work with some custom CM12 ROMs but it does on CM11, AOSP, and CM10.2 ROMs.
See that is the weird thing. All file manager programs find the files 100% perfectly. The file manager could even play the songs in the default music player. And it is only music files from what I can tell. Videos show up in MX player instantly on boot and pictures are loaded in rather fast by QuickPIC and the regular gallery upon boot. It's only music related files seemingly. At one time Amazon app store was having issues with games that were located on the SD card as well but that issue went away with a reinstall of the amazon app store. So it specifically became MP3 files for the issue. Those of course are also what my ringtone and message tones are. I did not however try other Kernels. The only thing I did try was updating my modem which I noticed was way older than it should have been because some roms couldn't get service. Of course that works now. My logic was the SIM and SD are on the same panel so maybe the modem has firmware for the whole thing. Didn't solve the issue but solved another.
So other Kernels? No. File manager? Works 100%
Crazy weird. The issue you are experiencing is one of the reasons some users tick with stock ROMs.
Hopefully, you will find a suitable solution. If you are able to solve the issue, post your solution as other XDA members may experience the same issue in the future.
Well I was able to solve it by finding a rom that didn't have the issue. The issue only started occuring on roms that were 4.4.4 and 5.0.x. Except for the two I listed at least. The suitable workaround is to put ringtones on the SD card but sometimes my music still won't show in Amazon Cloud player or the default music player. So CM11 seems to be pretty stable for the problem but CM12 was not. If it is a kernel problem I hope more people discover the issue so it can be fixed. The only tweak I had to do to make CM11 usable so far was to change the libc.so file with an older one because it was breaking Puzzle and Dragons.

I've been struggling to find a fully working rom for the HTC One V, it's been frustrating. I can find one that has nearly everything working but 1 thing (like the camera or something) Installed both CM9 and CM10 and both work great and are really fast EXCEPT for one big issue that affects a few things.
Most of the apps can't see the external SD card. The camera tells me to insert an SD card before taking pictures and USB storage just doesn't work unless I unmount the SD card, which doesn't always work.
Anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix? It makes the camera unusable
Have you tried backing up the data on the SD and doing a wipe? Sometimes doing an SD wipe on the phone itself helps

Same with me - m on galaxy grand.. Any fixes ?
Same here
I have the same problem. I just rooted my phone and installed the latest RC version of cyanogenmod. However in the file manager I can see my SD card and look at whats on it but no apps realises that there actually is an SD card. Like described above I can't take any photos, watch pictures from the SD card, or do anything because the rom only states "no storage available". Very weird. I have tried mount the SD card, formatting the SD card, reboot the phone but nothing works! Help anyone?
Ok so my phone is acting a little weird
Here's the issues i have
Rotation animation is gone
[*]Trying to record in 720p causes huge slowdown+ corrupted video (Regardless of kernel 480p or 720p)
On a Any GB rom my phone acts up. at first i thought it was a rom issue so i tried multiple other GB Roms, The problem still persist. So i tried multiple kernels and the same problem occurs BUT the one thing i noticed is that when i take the phone 100% back to factory mode (stock verizon rom @ GB ver. 2.3.3) via flashtool it acts as its supposed to no issues... this issue is even beyond me i dont get it of know whats the reason
Maybe sdcard error? Or broken media files
Try different sd card, or mount and scan it with window's scandisk or backup/format/restore sdcard
Are there any files in LOST.DIR folder in sdcard?

Hi everyone. I've been dealing with this for a few days now and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I'm currently running Wicked S5 Xperience with PhilZ recovery and CWM bootloader. My permissions file is written appropriately to allow apps to write to the external SD, and I manually went into ES File Explorer and changed the permissions appropriately. I'll take a picture, it saves to my external. Ill create a folder on external and it sticks. When I reboot, the folder is gone and the pictures disappear. I've also deleted pictures from the external, and upon reboot they come back. I've unmounted the external when flashing the ROM. I've formatted my internal SD. I've flashed the permissions file, tried Play Store apps, and manually editing the permissions.xml. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why this is happening. It's like my phone is forgetting what happened on the external when I reboot...
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Has this happened with other ROMs as well? Like Wicked X or Tribute? Have you flashed any AOSP ROMs lately? Have you tried another external SD card to see if it may be a bad card?
Well I was on Pac which was AOSP and the permission changes didn't make ANY affect at all. ES was saying I didn't have any write permissions on the external no matter what I did. Stock rooted does the same thing as S5 Xperience, even though I'm using the "allowed" Samsung file explorer.
The card worked in the past, it's loaded with pictures and documents. It's a 64 GB SanDisk high capacity... Or whatever it's called... Its been forever since I looked at the card.
I was originally trying to put Wicked X and I got stuck in a boot loop while trying to install the Xposed framework, and the zip deleted itself from my internal storage. I thought I had downloaded S5 Xperience so I downloaded that. Everything installed fine. I'll download X and see of that changes anything, but each time I formatted and reflashed S5 Xperience I've been having the same issue. The users in the S5 Xperience thread gave me some suggestions, but they haven't worked so far.
If you're sure the SD Card itself is good, all I can recomend is odin back to 100% stock then see if the problem persists.

I'm going to reformat the card first before going back to complete stock. I'm sure it has something to do with the way I rooted or something.
It's the card... Its bad. It's not old enough, though, which upsets me...
hoi board
i have made a clean install of the latest CM13 nightly to my serranoltexx
all went fine exept CM13 claims my sd card is corrupted:
Corrupted SD Card
SD Card is corrupt. Touch to fix it.
- i can use the sd card in TWRP
- i can use the sd card in CM11
- i can use the sd card in CM12.1
- i can use the sd card in my PC
no errors there.
it is a 32GB microSDHC CLASS10 card formatted with exFAT
so my question is: how can i tell the CM13 that the card is okay and
let the rom use it as usual?
some more info to help getting qualified answers:
- formatting the card IS NOT AN OPTION!
- I DO NOT WANT TO ADOPT THE CARD!!!
more more information:
- is it correct that MM/CM13 only supports fat32 or vfat on external storage?
EDiT: sd card is working as usual for me since 2016-01-02 nightly!
Not necessarily. What filesystem do you have on it? It could be that I need to add selinux policies for nonstandard filesystems. MM is a ***** now regarding security, so some tweaking might be required.
more additional infos

Same issue with my jflexx samsung galaxy s4 international.
I had to roll back to cm12.1 as a result.
well...
i am quite curious.
browsed the git some seconds ago and i have the feeling
there is a discussion if VOLD or FUSE handles the exfat volumes
on external sd cards and should it be on vendor (CM13) or
device (android_device_samsung_msm8930-common) level.
also i think that it is not so easy to get something like that
realized at vendor (CM13) level, what seems to be preferred...:fingers-crossed:
i stay curious though :silly:

i flashed the 2016-01-02 nightly an sd card is working as usual. :silly:
I've never been able to get my 64GB SDXC card to merge. When I do try, it hangs and get some sort of error then I have to use a program on PC to be able to identify my card and reformat it. Tried every system format you can think of...... I'm going mad with this lol
I have the same false notification but on AOSP 6.0, Can anyone tell me what I must change.
Samsung N5110
Hi, I am having the same issue reported above with the latest nightly of cyanogenMod 13. Are you able to explain how to solve the issue.
Thanks
I've had this issue tons on CM13 but never found a solution. Often a reboot fixes it. The mSD always works fine in a PC or from TWRP but CM just says it's corrupted.
Tried reformatting before, usually fixes the issue temporarily. Seems to trigger again eventually, possibly with a new build - so it could be TWRP or update related. Usually happens on boot, sometimes spontaneously. Might see if I can get a catlog but given how random it is, might be tough.
Pretty certain this is an issue with CM. Not had this on stock, had it with two different devices both on CM. Pretty sure its happened with multiple mSDs. Could be exFAT related?
What about supporting f2fs too? I get tons of messages in CM13 regarding a corrupted sdcard, but the card is regularly mounted by a userinit.sh script and is working ok. I also notice a drop in performance, with some short freezes, just before the system display one message for each f2fs partition on external sdcard.

Thanks for your information. I like others have this issue on with 128 GB exFAT formatted card (using SDFormatter tool). Everything works fine (TRWP, and Windows 7 PC) without issue over multiple boots to and from my phone except that CM is reporting (incorrectly) that my SDXC card is corrupted. Formatting inside of CM13 does NOT solve the problem and actually never completes - CM hangs at 20% completed for my card and never moves forward - so it's hung - except that it doesn't do a Force Close. Every single reboot that I've tried with CM 13 or CM 13 based ROMs (like RR) respond with the same incorrect error message. No problems with CM12 based ROMs. Have also tried the XDA FixExtSD thread and that doesn't help at all either - after correctly saving (on my PC) and using TWRP to install the ZIP file (which TWRP sees fine) - still reboot system in CM with same error - it doesn't go away for me. To me this is a bug in CM13. I'm giving up on CM13 based ROMs (for now) and going back to CM12 where I can using my SD card as an external storage medium.
well...
almost a year later i can resume: it does not get better at all!
i am on 4.4.4 [2016-02] and have to admit, that neither CM12.x nor CM13
can offer the same reliability as CM11.
sadly.

I formatted the card to EXT4 and it's improved things massively. No more hanging/crawling transfers and no more surprise unmounts - just really quick bug-free transfers between the internal and external. Been using for a couple of weeks now.
This has led me to one conclusion: exFAT support in CM is horrible. It should either be fixed or dropped entirely.
PS. Mine is also 128GB. I was toying with sending the card back until I switched over to EXT4.

Excellent tip. I will try EXT4 then. Possible issue with Win7 exchange, but I'll try Paragon's ExtFS for that. I have MiniTool Partition Wizard for the EXT4 partitioning. For data on my 128GB SDXC card, I have large collection of music flac and wav files and some other misc jpg photos, and of course I want to store ROMs and TWRP backups etc on the same card. I will report my findings later in a couple of days. I'm hoping that it works for me too, because I really would like CM13 or ROM based on CM13 (like latest RR). I'm trying it on my NOS (New Old Stock) LG G3 - which is new for me. Thanks again -
After i flash cr droid rom my phone doesnt read my sd card, it appear to be formated first, but getting message sd card not suported , any solution??
I'm not much of an AOSP ROM user on this device. But as far as I know, this is a common issue (or at least, it was) on AOSP ROMs.
This happened a lot on my old Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 on a few different AOSP ROMs. What sometimes worked for me, put the SD card in a USB card reader, connected to Windows PC. A dialogue box appeared asking to fix errors on the SD/drive. I picked the default selection, which was to fix error by some quick/fast method (forget the exact wording) which only took a few minutes, and retained the data on the card And then the SD would work again.
Although this didn't work every time, but did the majority of times I got this error. In the remaining cases, you may need to reformat the SD.

Good to know. I guess I should have figured there were some hardware hiccups on the Nougat builds.
