[Q] Factory Resetting phone with no display. - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to sell my wifes old S4 Mini after she dropped it and cracked the display. The problem I have is I want to factory reset it to clear any sensitive data.
Is it possible when the LCD will not come on at all? The phone does connect to my pc for file transfer fine.
If its not possible what files can I safely delete from the phone manually from the PC? After looking through the folders there is only the Android Data and OBB folders that need stuff deleting from.
If I can safely delete any from here is there a way to make sure they remain deleted and are not recoverable?
Cheers in advance!

Thanks, anyone got any idea how long it is before the Samsung logo comes up as the thread I read says you need to stop pressing Vol Up + Power + Home at this point?
I'm trying different times but I just cannot get it into bootloader, ADB isnt recognizing any devices.

It's fast, press power and immediately as it vibrates press home and vol+ but give it a minute to let the recovery boot, then connect if the command fastboot devices show a device you're good to go
I think flashing a stock with odin+pit file and repartition wipe all but this is risky

You could check this worked by conecting via async and checking folders, you will tell because all will be removed, old programs etc.
Thanks that's good info. But the only thing is I can't see the screen to follow the on screen prompts. The screen shows nothing but what looks to be black & white ink

Ok now where would I find these files once I hook up to pc via async?
well its not going to work..here is the issues. the CEMAIL.vol file is in use basically whenever the phone is on. so you cant just copy or delete it or you get an error and it fails. i have been looking around a bit and havent found an excalibur specific solution this this. give me a few minutes to play around
and you will see the files in the root directory..root directory is where you will see program files, storage card, windows etc.. when you connect via activesync and browse to it with explorer..scroll down and you will see the files.
make sure you have your pc set to show hidden and system files your you wont see some things..
Ok I'll wait on the response & b sure to have pc show hidden files. I also want to thank U guys 4 ur help thus far

You know how the phone async explorer integrates with explorer on comp does this not mean you could use an unlocker and unlock the file in question then delete? Long shot.
I have an unlocker to which i could attach if any use?

its a sharing violation because that files is in use.
here is the problem. if we can go into the registry and change the path for the mms/sms and reboot...it will create a blank .vol file in the new path that was created in the registry ...therefore freeing the one that we need to delete.
or so thats my theory...let me install pim back up and back my stuff up...i have some texts i need so i cant just go deleting just yet.
yes i have yahoo IM ([email protected])
What IM do U have?
Thanks guys 4 all of your help. I finally got it to reset holding the 2 soft keys & the send key. Thanx again

Cool glad you got it sorted, knew you would be able to reset blind
Was there any fix for the cemail, though? I saved my cemail.vol before a hard reset, and would like to restore it now, but i always get a sharing violation error.

Remove "messaging" from the Today screen so that the file is not in use, and restart. It should now be deletable.

Sounds like you flashed one too many times. The Custom RUU's do not reformat the ROM chip. Flash a Stock ROM like one of the HTC Official Updates. This will have the stock RUU which does format the ROM chip. Then, you can go flash any ROM you like. I had this same problem once on my Kaiser where folders would disappear.

Not that it would occur, but something similar "could" occur. This is why in the Kaiser section they always told you to flash stock/hard reset/flash custom ROM of choice/hard reset. It's not that you need to, but doing so an help prevent weird bugs from showing up like what he explained. It's just like installing Windows on a PC, they always recommend you format the drive on each install or your install could be buggy. For best results you format so the drive is clean & no left over files that can screw with the new install. Plus, low level formating will gain back bad clusters in the hard driver/ROM chip lost during use by data corruption. This format process is disabled in the XDA made Custom*RUU.exe for various reasons. So the more ROM's you flash, the more changes occur on the ROM Chip & the more likely a bug could appear.

Check in the ROM's thread. Also, you may need to clear the PC's sync partnerships. If you have flashed a lot the PC can only handle so many Partners. Each time you flash a new ROM, it creates a new partner as it think's it's a different device.
how do you soft and hard reset the att tilt 2? Had an old tilt and I just got this a few days ago still figuring it out

Soft Reset hole is on the side of the device. It may be under the battery door. The side with the stylus, under the secondary Mic.
Hard Reset is done by holding Send/End/Power & pressing Soft Reset with stylus. Hold the Send/End/Power keys till the Hard Reset message appears onscreen.
This was the first flash I did and after a hard rest still will not sync and nothing in the thread for the rom. I cleared all my partnerships. The phone is connected and I can transfer files to and from my storage card. Do I need to update the device driver on my pc? Any way to get my outlook 2003 contacts on the phone through my storage card or any other way?

If running XP you need ActiveSync 4.5, if running Vista/7 you need Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1. All drivers for the devices come from those programs. Have you tried manually opening Active Sync/device Center to see if it's connecting/seeing the device? Also, make sure there's no setting on the device making it act as a USB Mass Storage drive. Some ROM's give a app or setting to do this as it increases transfer rates for copying files, but it doesn't allow syncing.
I have win mobile device center and know sync. the phone will connect for usb mass storage and I can access the files on my storage card. when I connect my phone it gives me the option of outlook sync or flash drive. I select the outlook sync and the first time my pc said the device was installed successfully but no recognition from mobile device center.

Hum, I'm at a loss, I would post in the ROM's thread to see if anyone else has/had this issue. Maybe it's ROM related?!?!? I'm running ROMeOS without sync issues. Granted I don't sync anything, but when i open device center the device does show up. I always check this, because if the device isn't seen by WMDC, I can't get data connections while connected to USB. I have this problem a lot because I removed WMDC from startup as I don't want an app running in the BG taking up resources when I don't use it.
actually what i did was flash my rom through micro sd because my phone wouldnt load to the home screen so i wasnt able to connect to aactive sync. thank god i got my wife a tp2 also wich i was able to dl the nnhb file on the micro sd card and then just run it from my phone but yes i did flash my rom way too many times during this past weekend id say about t times in a days is there a limit of times you can flash a device per day because i dont want to fry my phone up lol silly me

For future reference, you don't need to flash via SD if you are stuck. Just follow these steps.
1) Power Off
2) Hold down Volume Down button
3) Plug in USB Cable
4) Boot Loader appears onscreen & at button in White space says "USB"
5) Flash ROM via PC as normal.
yea but its not going to be connected to active sync so how do i get the nbh file onto the phone unless i can just run the ruu and it will flash
ok now everytime i try to flash my rom back to the stock one through micro sd it starts the process but then the back light turns off and then the phone stays off and i have to hard reset it can someone help me and when i connect it to the pc it has the bootloader but it says error on the bottom of the screen
do i have to flash my radio back to stock also?
I had the same problem... luckily t-mobile has a buyers remorse program... because I could not get the active sync/WMDC to work either... did you download the wifi cab on another thread? I ask because this is what did it for me? Or maybe a combo of cabs but definately linked to the wifi cab... Gettin a new phone today... if anyone figure this out, make it a sticky!

Recover your lost files??is a dream for GN?

Hello there,
it is one of the best phone and the easiest to recover or update in my opinion but,
the issue of no memory card is really something bad for your files in case if something happened to the phone!
i know backup is so important but what if you phone crashed all of the sudden because of an application update and you will enter in the repeated boot loops and you have to reset the phone or flash new software!!
OH! Then your will loose everything in the mobile !
it is really sad it happened to me twice in2 weeks i lost allot of good pictures.
i am sure most of the phone users tried to recover the lost files and no one could do it because the phone is identified as MTP, no logical letter drive can be assigned to the phone!!!
All recover software’s couldn’t find the phone and even when i tried hexcomp from the market to recover the pictures, couldn’t do it.
my question for our developers is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
or ,
is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
I don’t know why Goggle didn’t think of such problem because it happened to allot of people and I am not used to back up my files before because there were in memory card.
I really hope the developers will work on such issue because this is the worst thing I found it in the phone.
I might be wrong but I think you can pull everything off the phone using adb whilst in recovery mode?
Dropbox.
It can sync pictures as soon as you take them.
You can sync files between multiple devices, including uploading and downloading to your phone.
Titanium Backup can be synced to drop box.
Check it out,
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTc4MjI1MTU5
Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus.
i tried Pull before it took long time without doing nothing
i know dropbox and i know what it do
i am asking the DEVELOPERS:
1-is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
2-is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
Thanks

Theoretically you probably could write a CWM script to create a virtual folder and mount that as USB media via CWM. But it would require loading the script to the phone via ADB anyways.

Touch Screen is Unresponsive and I Need to Back-up My Phone

AT&T SGS3 running AOKP 4.2.2
I dropped my phone and broke the touch screen. It displays, but is unresponsive to touch commands. I'm looking to:
-Back it up on my PC or External Card, and
-Get it back to stock. I paid for the extra warranty so they'll just send me a phone before I even send mine back in, but I at least want to make a reasonable effort to cover up my rooting. I can just imagine them deciding I owe them $600. Basterds.
I have read the related threads, and they gave me some ideas, but I wanted some fresh thoughts. I currently have CWM on it, and I know you normally can't see the external card with CWM, but I haven't had a chance to poke around too much because I'm still at work.
I'll keep you guys updated.
Thanks.

Even though the phone doesn't respond to touch does the computer recognize it as a storage device when you plug it in? If so you should be able to back up your photos and personal files. You could even do a nandroid in recovery then dump those from internal storage to your PC. However I've never tried restoring a nandroid backup to another phone.
Or if you already had USB debugging active you could likely fetch the files you want using adb through terminal but I couldn't help with that.
Just some of my thoughts

OK I just did a backup to my external SD card. CWM had a specific option for it, which originally I thought would be the obvious course, but I read on here that CWM didn't normally see external storage for some reason.
I just hope my external card is big enough. It should be.
*EDIT* Error on the data back-up. Probably not enough space. Is there anyway I can check what the issue is? because it would be really easy to buy a bigger SD card.
Also, are there any issues with restoring onto another phone? Would I just have to flash the same ROM onto it before restoring?
Thanks

I would like to think that I had USB debugging on but I'm not entirely sure. Knowing me it would have been one of the first things I did.
I'm at work and they have a security guard against data transfer via disk. I can't see the actual storage, just the media Icon, or whatever that is. This may just be a result of the security settings here.
I'll have to check all this at home

I'm also having trouble getting it to go to download mode. It starts to, then reverts to normal boot up.
A new phone's on the way, but I need to get some files of this one, and get it back to stock before I send it in.
What's the likely hood they would charge me for the phone if I send them back the broken phone with a custom ROM? Especially considering that it was undoubtedly a hardware issue and we paid for the extra warranty.
They already processed the return and shipped me a phone. They would have to get my phone, boot it up, and get mad enough to want to punish me, rather than just processing the refurb. I think it's highly unlikely they would try to rescind my warranty, but I'm really trying to give a college try at getting it to stock.
Anymore ideas would be appreciated.

OK, so I'm thinking about what you say about "dumping my nandroid onto my desktop". Would there be a way to access the files from this image using my desktop? There has to be some sort of "virtual droid" or emulator package where I could mount the data.

I gave up on recovering my pics and media. They weren't that valuable.
I flashed a stock ROM, but I didn't Triangle Away so my counter reads "1". Do I need it to read "0"?
I performed a factory reset hoping to wipe everything, including my personal photos and media, but there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not this deletes your pics and media. I performed this through the stock recovery as there is no way for me to do it through my ROM without a touchscreen.
What's the latest verdict on this? I read a few threads and it seems people still aren't in agreement.
Does a factory reset/delete through the stock recovery delete EVERYTHING including pics and media? If not, how can I do this? I was thinking that I need to flash CWM again and do some formatting/partitioning?
I'm really trying to read all I can, I just don't have hours to do this right now. I'd greatly appreciate some help.
Thanks
The stock recovery will not delete anything stored on internal storage. AFAIK cwm has the options to and you can use the volume buttons to scroll up and down and power to select the choice.

OK so I was finally able to look at my storage on my PC via USB, after getting it back to stock ROM, and the reset appears to have deleted everything. There are no pics or vids in the DCIM folder where in the past this is where they've always been. I'm going to content myself with this observation.
Now I just need to set my flash counter to 0. It's at 1. Although I think it's highly unlikely they're going to retro charge me for a phone that's already on the way. Also, my screen has been degrading over time. Now I believe I can't see anything on it. Is it still possible to use Triangle Away when I can't use or see the touch screen. I'm sure I'd have to go from the ADB shell or something. Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks.

How to use On Screen Phone? (the hard way)

Things with this device just keep getting better and better, it's amazing and earlier today the glass was cracked, so now the Digitiser is semi broken and I'm unable to unlock my patten lock, to change the USB mode to LG Software, then use On Screen Phone
Are there any workarounds, that involve not formatting / resetting my device please?
Also, I hope to save / backup data before repair too, so suggestions are welcome
Help will be greatly appreciated

Can you please clarify, as it's not clear (to me at least) what you mean?
As system files / settings are not important to me, just personal files
No problem. If you have rooted an unlocked bootloader, you can enter recovery and wipe data/cache. This will let you the phone like it comes to your hand, all apps you download will be deleted, contacts, messaging, but your lockacreen security will be gone so you can unlock your lockacreen. Your internal storage, music, and other files that you have in your memory will not be affected.
If you dont have recovery you will need to shutdown phone, and hold power button+voldown option and will see a menu to delete all files, data/cache and your internal storage. This is the only solution if you dont have recovery.

It's a sound option and I have already looked in to that - http://en.miui.com/thread-5684-1-1.html
However, it all comes back to warranty issues, so I'm going to have the broken hardware repaired, which pains me as I love DIY and hate paying others to repair my stuff (shaking fist in the air)
Many thanks for your help
