GPe rom for 816 ? - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone !
I'm landing here since my old xperia S feels like it's dying, so, wanting a HTC device, the only one whch was availabe
from my phone operator was this one.
I think this one doesn"t look very popular, but I was wondering if there was a way to convert it to google play edition like
it's possible on the one or one m8.
Thanks !

Well you can flash CM11 or CM12 which is more or less the same.
And an AICP ROM is in the works.
Just out of curiosity, why want a HTC phone specifically if you are just planning on changing it to Google Play edition anyways?

Well it is mostly a money thing... I don't have a lot of it and I'm getting tired of a laggy xperia (it has an aosp ROM but it's laggy anyway). I'm not really fond of Samsung phones and don't want to mess up with an other Sony xperia (the way they treated the owners of the SXS was bad customer relationship) and there was no Acer phone available... BTW, the fact I managed to get this one for 1$ is really the more obvious reason.
Edit : one more (may be) stupid question, but I can't find something like ''everything you need to know about HTC desire 816'' thread, does anything like this exist ?

Possible yes, I'll be more then glad to try bringing gpe to this device. But that's as soon as the Virgin Mobile variant gets a recovery that support aroma flawlessly... My team is already working on the device tree for the a5_chl ... So as soon as we are done I'll start cooking like I did for one mini. Just your other devs will need to port it from my varient.

Unlike AOSP , GPE can't brick a device because it uses a sense kernel. Plus GPE is usually bugless where AOSP roms tend to always have bugs. So I can see why some users would want gpe.

FYI I'll be getting my HTC from virgin mobile France, if there is a way I can help, tell me. I'm a complete noob for programming but I can try and give feed back and logcats
Édit: ok so I got my HTC desire, but ad my phone operator employees are complete assholes, they forgot to put a nano SIM in the package, so unless I cut my micro SIM by hands I won't be doing anything with the device soon. Anyway I'm reading a part here on xda about everything related to the phone, and as I told you before, if there is something I can do, just tell me.

Q For developers : Android on htc hero OR on WM

Hi all ,
in my country HTC Distributor has no android phones yet and HTC Hero in some unique places is very expensive with no warranty , also any HTC with windows mobile is already exiest so what is more right decision if i want to develop for android :
1- buy HTC Hero , expensive and no warrenty
2- buy Any WindowsMobile HTC , with warrenty , and install android on it ?!
if ur answer is 2 , what is the best htc model for that ?!
Thanks Alot
I'm not a developer but I've read somewhere that you can install an immulator on your PC and run your applications on it as if it was running on a specific device. I think it also comes with a list of predefined devices, like Hero for example.
And it's FREE I think!
it's great to find some one to answer me , thank u
am already using the emulator but when u have real device it can make a difference
You won't get Android working perfectly on a Windows Mobile HTC Phone, the experienced wasn't specifically designed for that device therefore, you should get ALOT of force closes etc. I recommend investing in the Hero.
I would also recommend a Hero.
That being said, I ran Android on my HTC Vogue (the CDMA version of the Touch) for about a year before Telus got an Android device. It's damn near perfect. Contrary to what MysteryHero says, you don't get any force closes, it runs great. They've even got to the point now where Android can be flashed onto the phone instead of booting it off the SD card from WM. The only thing that doesn't work is BT audio. If you can live without that, I highly recommend a Vogue. Or a Hero, of course. But you could probably find a Vogue for a lot cheaper on eBay or something.

Do note that the GSM version of HTC Vogue, which is known as the HTC touch is not able to run on android. ( I used to use a HTC Touch)

Any android phone will be the best option.
DO NOT get a WM phone instead, hoping that it will give you a perfect Android experience. That will just not happen.
I refuse to believe you cannot get your hand on a HTC android phone way one or the other.
And in regard to your signature:
It should be "learning" not "leraning".

Froyo & Flash Player upgrade

Hi All, Im a Flash Developer and want to get a phone for FLash mobile dev. I cant get the Nexus One where I live (South Africa) but we can get the Desire.
So my question is this, will the HTC Desire get the Froyo upgrade as soon as the Nexus One does?
Does anyone know how the Flash Player for mobile be rolled out? I can t find anything on it anywhere.
also interested in an answer to this... I know the Desire rom has been ported to the N1 but has the reverse been done and if not is it possible.
Very close to buying a Desire for it optical controller and slightly upgrade RAM but would like the option of moving to a fully functional Android 2.2 if HTC take ages releasing their own update (which is inevitable!)

Going by HTCs previous form, almost certainly not, though given how new the Desire is I would hope that HTC already have plans for an upgrade in the pipeline.
As I see it, the biggest issue with getting any form of Froyo onto the Desire is that we will need a 2.6.32 kernel.
Currently, HTC have not released the kernel source for the Desire, which makes it pretty much impossible for anyone to port the Desire specific parts of 2.6.29 to 2.6.32.
Given that the Nexus One and the Desire are very similar, it is likely that their aren't too many differences in the kernel source, but the current lack of the code for the Desire means we just don't know.
Regards,
Dave
Flash Player
Im happy to run 2.1 on the Desire, but I'm really getting it for Flash.
So does anyone know how Flash will be installed on the OS? Will it come with the update or will it come as an application that one can install?
Maybe HTC aint released the kernal for this very reason, that they dont want people to port over 2.2 from N1 ROM update.
According to a user in a german forum, HTC will release an update to 2.2 one month later: http://translate.google.de/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.android-hilfe.de%2F307474-post57.html&sl=de&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8
I hope it's true
As far as I know Adobe will release Flash for Android in multiple ways and one of them is through the Android Market for all compatible devices.
So even if the Desire wouldn't get 2.2 for some time, Flash 10.1 should be available for the Desire from start (as HTC has marketed the Desire being Flash 10.1 ready).
Anybody got any real evidence of how this will happen?
Will be really cool if all devices get it as an install through the market but this is all still pure speculation?
Why is all this so tight lipped, we all know Flash Player is coming, why does it matter how it is coming?
Gotta love all the conjecture on these forums.
Not sure if this helps, but my desire HAS flash support. It works quite well though streaming video doesn't seem to work. Download video works most of the time (i.e. youtube etc.).
That's Flash Lite. This will be full Flash.

It will be awesome to get froy one month after its release, but since i'm also from the good old South Africa i must inform you that even if HTC releases the update we (South Africans) have to wait for leaf and our "wonderful" network operators to test it as well...thats now unless you root you phone and get a ROM from XDA
Wouldnt it be a liiiiiiitle too strange if we Desire users wont get it... I mean if u compare Nexus One with Desire ther isnt realy much difference ore am i very wrong :S
now the kernal has been released, it may be possible for them to port over the current 2.1 N1 ROM to Desire. If that works then they can do it for 2.2.

No your right except for the fact that the nexus uses googles UI (user interface) and rhe desire uses htc's Sense UI, so the qeustion is not if it will work but when will htc port it to their UI...or thats how I understand the situation.
Just got a reply on a email I sent to HTC regarding the update to 2.2 (Froy) for the desire
This is the reply I got:
"Good Day Thank you for contacting HTC Support. We have received your email regarding the availability of the Android 2.0 software . We are still awaiting for feedback from Google SA on the (TA ) of the Android 2.0 version . Should you have any other queries please feel free to contact us again . Kind Regards HTC Support"
Not sure if this only counts for SA but doesn't really sound like the guy knows what hes talking about because i specifically asked about Android 2.2 aka Froy. We already have Android 2.0...

hello, your Desire will not be branded.. thanks to the people (and me) who had complained about the 1.24.161.3 uptade (vodafone branded, very buggy & slow!)
enjoy the phone, dont root or do anything with it as it is your first android phone so it would be very likely to brick the phone if you do not read & or know enough
I am pretty sure you will have 2.2, however 2.1 is not that bad so no poit messing around with the phone to get 720p etc.. for me- it made no differace, just wanted the horrible branding off!
nice to see someone live close to me.. never saw anyone clocer than london..
hope this helps & enjoy the phone

thank you all... that would be sweet if its not branded like my tp2 was....
im inbetween slutton & croydon and work in east london atm.
ive heard alot of good things about android, only every really had a lil play with 1 or 2 android phones in the shops, couldnt test the internet ect...
but i wasnt keen on flashing my phones, must be why i got so annoyed with the tp2.
i will check out the link posted, and i will probly be posting up about more stuff if i cant find it in the search function.
You wouldn't be dissappointed with the Desire, infact, you wouldn't be dissapointed with any of hTC's android phones, especially unbranded ones. I strongly suggest you to flash a custom rom tho, they are quicker and more efficient than stock roms and should lengthen your battery life compared to normal stock roms.
Well I hope you will enjoy the phone, and have fun in the Desire forum
started using my desire last night, havnt evan had time to set anything up on it, i need to get used to the touch screen, soo used to having touch & type lol
have installed a few things such ass whatapp & juice defender because the people i work with rate that app highly with there galaxy S's

No JB ROM has Sense right now.
HTC has not released JB for any device as of yet. JB will come only with One X+. Even then it will probably take 2-3 months for Sense with JB to work for DHD. Atleast not unless One V or One S get their JB updates(if any).
I think our phone get old .. we should buy one x
Maybe the time has come to buy a new phone. Thanks for replys.
Don't buy another HTC phone, they promised ics for us and then they told us Desire HD couldn't run it. A lie!!!

well actually they did not said anything like that...
they cancelled ICS for DHD because there would be no way to upgrade without formatting system partitions which would lead to loss of users data and so on...

Yes, and an average user will not be happy with this. ROM flashers dont care, but normal users do
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
True, but they could have released the update, clearly stating in the update info screen that it will lead to loss of data. So then, only the users who want it would run it, while the others would simply cancel it. This is a no-brainer. Other companies have done this, so I don't see why HTC can't. Re-partitioning and loss of data is no excuse for a company to renege on their promised upgrade. At best, they could have released an RUU on HTCdev for our phone just like they did for the HTC Desire GB upgrade. That way only really knowledgeable users would run it.
The truth is, they never started work on ICS for the DHD at all. *Every* other HTC phone had an ICS leak a month or two before they officially got it. The DHD had none. They never started work on the DHD, because they didn't want to spend their time and money on the oldest phone in the list, expecting people to buy their new One series instead. That's a crap move. It wouldn't be that bad if they didn't promise the upgrade in the first place and then go back on their word, but they did. Motorola did the same thing with the Photon 4G and 2 other phones. At least we got Froyo > Gingerbread. Those phones were stuck on GB their entire life, and Motorola had the gall to offer a $100 discount (not cash-back) for customers of these phones, if they purchased newer Motorola phones.
On the other hand, you have Sony Mobile which us releasing alpha stage ROMs of upcoming upgrades to the community, along with kernel source code for the alpha ROM, taking suggestions from the community and actively working together to develop that ROM. That is how a company should be. Motorola is crap and HTC has gone far down that route. They just don't care. Sony as a company can't work to upgrade all their phones all the time too, because ultimately it costs time and money, but to counter that they are actively helping the community by providing drivers and binaries for custom ROMs. This is the reason more or less all Sony Xperia phones (low-end to high-end) have official CM support. HTC and Motorola make great phones but their business practices and ideologies are just wrong.

Flash WP8.1 to Android variants

When the google play edition came out, we got the dump, and worked to making a flashable rom. Now with a Windows Phone variant running on the M8, wouldn't it be relatively easy to port it? I tend to switch between Android and WP phones. Having a phone that could have either would make me want to purchase the phone because I wouldn't have to switch between two phones constantly.
Is hboot on HTC windows phones? Is there a way to dump the system and port it? Make a rom possibly? Maybe possibly RUUs to switch between the OSs factory installs?
bump
The phones have different hardware so don't count to much on it...
From what I have read, the only change will be the OS
"As for specifications, the Windows-based (M8) will run on Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, but should otherwise be identical to the Android model, from the Boomsound speakers to the 5-inch Full HD display. No word yet on whether or not the device will come to any carriers other than Verizon, but there hasn’t been any indication from any other carriers up to this point."
So I wouldn't go as far as it's not possible. There is always hope.. In the General folder there is a dev working on a Dual Boot M8. Hoping to see the WP8 on one of the boot....

@Oditius, thanks I found it, its called MultiROM.
I currently switch between my M8 and my Lumia 1020. I love the sleekness of Windows Phone and the big screen and awesome speakers of my One. Would be nice to see this happen a-la HD2

So you trust the word of one mod over hundreds of leaks? I am in the WP world as well as android. Ghost may be right, but then again there are too many very trustworthy leaks.

Why would i not......Why should i trust leaks even if it would be thousands and spreaded of the word of one man.....same as believing one mod !
I'm not going into discussion about this any further. All WP vs Android M8 are closed down.....this should be the next i guess
But this isn't about WP vs android. I like both OS's. This is about putting WP on an android device to have the best of both worlds
