My phone fell from my hand. And now the power button is not working. How to I remap it to the Search button? And will it be able to switch off/on the phone if it shuts down?

You cannot. it is hardwired to a pin, thats why you can force a reboot even if the phone locks up. You might be able to remap some functions, but not poweron/off and screen on. because when the screen is off the digitizer is in sleep mode so the search button wouldnt respond unless it was activated. Sorry to hear about you dropping the phone. Any warranty left?
No warranty
just another thought, sorry to hear about your phone. However, are you sure its the power button? since you dropped it, it might be caused by other hardware failure... you may need to consider the possibility as well..

depending on country/distributor some comes with only 1 year. Then again, i don't think they will entertain a claim caused by user... usually only covers factory defaults.
I bought mine from the US though i Live in India. So no warranty
this means... you have to use a pin to short the switch and boot it up everytime lol. Then enable wake using vol button to wake the phone haha.
How is it not working? Is it pressed below the unibody?
if so, I had the same issue, what i did was; remove the cover (first the battery, volume buttons and gps) and then while having the backcover in my hand, I took a small stump or something alike and pressed on the button from both sides, like 5 times each side.
Then put the thing together and it worked perfectly.
I've actually done this 3 times because I drop my phone very often xD
But if it don't work you should definitely get "Tap Tap App" which makes you unlock your phone with the proximity sensor located to the right of your speaker (the little black dot).
Hope it helps! Both solutions worked for me!
*Edit, oh yeah you can get a mod to use volume buttons to wake it up aswell, as the person above me mentioned ^^
Good luck!

Hello,
For the S3.
the home button & the volumes button are disabled with this zip.
Just the power button will wake up your phone. Battery saver
Flash it with CWM.

How is this a battery saving mod? Does the home-button wakeup feature actually consume some battery?

Me too! Very useful when out at concerts etc. I found that the constant movement would cause the power button to be hit, then screen would stay on for a minute with contact through thin trousers/shorts.
Eventually I found phone was quite warm and battery was slightly reduced.
And I have no idea what the volume wake does, but I have left it enabled.
How about wake up with volume keys

Basically, the file gpio-keys.kl contains four lines corresponding to both volume keys, power button and the home button.
The zip I posted removes the WAKE from just the power button. So the volume keys behave in the same way they would without the modification.
The zip the op posted removes the WAKE from the volume keys and the home button, but not the power button. (so the volume keys will no longer wake the device).
I don't know what this difference means, I assume it may have something to do with volume changing when listening to music? But I have no idea.
Does this clear it up?
But the volume keys dont wake up the phone by default right?

Nope, not as far as I have ever seen.
But they were set to WAKE, so I left them that way.
Is there a flashable file that can enable that?
Thanks1

the button doesn't, but the screen coming on does. Disabling the button is handy, when phones in pocket, and button keeps pressing.

Enable wake on volume key press? I honestly don't know how, according to the file that I modified they already do - but we know that they don't actually visibly affect the device.

I think acccidently pressing the power button is much easier than accidently pressing the home button, so arguably, you would save more power disabling the power button, and not the home button?
ThankĀ“s for this, love it.
i have a case on my s3 so pressing the power button is eliminated accidentally, however the home button i seem to press accidentally every time i pull it out of my pocket or even just shuffling it around.
Hey,can't test it because i have cm9!
Looking good though...
Could you make a zip for cm9 too?

Fair enough, I foolishly don't have a case for my phone. But I have insurance so that helps? (worst reasoning ever)

I just downloaded a CM9 nightly, the same file exists which this zip modifies.
This *should* work for you no issues, with the revert working aswell. Of course, nandroid first...

Tried with your Power button disabled mod.. Doesn't work.. After flashing, it still wakes up my phone.
I am on Stock firmware with Siyah Kernel.. Any suggestions. Thanks.
I found out a way to temporarily disable back light on the soft keys on my non-rooted HOX. It kind of works most of the times and is active until you lock the device.
First, download "Screen filter" from the Play store
Activate the screen filter to your liking, I recommend putting a widget on your home screen and un-tick the "enable soft-key backlight"
Now comes the extremely unscientific trick to get the soft key to be turned off, press the power key on your device to lock and unlock your device until it "forgets" to turn on the soft key back light!
I do this almost every night and usually works after 3 or 4 tries.
Maybe there is a better solution out there for the people who have not rooted their device?

I think there is? Adjbrightness or how it's called, but it needs root. Or you can just shut the backlight completely like I did with an easy framework change.

I tried to unlock the bootloader today,I was in the step where you have to press the volume up button and plug the usb. The blue light showed up, but due to some problems i couldn't continue the unlocking process. I disconnected the phone from the PC, but the blue light was still on. I tried turning the phone on, but no response. I tried pressing up+power, no response. I tried connecting to the PC again, nothing. I tried every single thing ,but the phone won't turn on and the light won't go off.
I searched every corner of the internet for an answer but i can't find any. This phone is brand new(i bought just 2 days ago!!!!) and i'm yet to pay for it.... Please help me, i beg you!

Did anyone at HTC actually use this device? The power button is an absolute joke. 50% of the time I wind up messing with the volume on my way to turn the phone off and put it back in my pocket.
How do you guys sleep this thing? The nexus 5 buttons are so much better.

anyway, there are many different ways to turn of the screen.(root needed)
1.swipe2sleep
2.notification double tap on viper rom
3. OR u can just customize a button on ur NAV bar to turn off the phone

First I have a nexus5 also and there is no comparison on the buttons. They rattle when you shake it. Anyways maybe you have a bad device. I just set mine to hold home to turn screen off so I never even have to hit the button but my button works fine if I need it.

Indeed. I'm contemplating a return and sticking with either my moto x or nexus 5 so k won't be rooting it at the moment.
Its bizarre that they added motion gestures basically acknowledging the button isn't great, is there no off gesture?

I will look into this. Seems odd HTC has an "on" method (acknowledging they need one in addition to the sleep button) but not an off button.

Except sometimes, I long press the power button, then I get a short vibration & several options regarding resetting or powering down my phone. Thanks for confirming the presence of the other features tho! I am glad to see that the power button functions to start the device, as well as turn the display on & off. I am certainly happy to discover that the power buttons function didn't change just because HTC located it somewhere other than where LG located it!
Seriously, I also have a N5 (with ZERO button issues, rock solid), but I much prefer the HTC button placement. No accidentally turning the device off while just trying to adjust the volume with only a left hand available at the time.

Yeah, I actually prefer the button being in the top. I never really liked the power button on the side.
My hands aren't big either, if anything they're smaller than an average guy.
It just takes a small shift to turn it off with one hand, just being careful you don't press the volume buttons. Which became easy after a couple days of use for me.
