TIP: temporarily disable soft key back light when it is dark - HTC One X

I found out a way to temporarily disable back light on the soft keys on my non-rooted HOX. It kind of works most of the times and is active until you lock the device.
First, download "Screen filter" from the Play store
Activate the screen filter to your liking, I recommend putting a widget on your home screen and un-tick the "enable soft-key backlight"
Now comes the extremely unscientific trick to get the soft key to be turned off, press the power key on your device to lock and unlock your device until it "forgets" to turn on the soft key back light!
I do this almost every night and usually works after 3 or 4 tries.
Maybe there is a better solution out there for the people who have not rooted their device?

Edit: my bad didn't notice the not rooted part
I think there is? Adjbrightness or how it's called, but it needs root. Or you can just shut the backlight completely like I did with an easy framework change.

There's another dirty trick. Press and hold your power button, till the capacitive buttons start to blink, when they are off, during the blinking process, release the power button, this will turn them off

I couldn't find a way to power down the device via the hardware buttons, but there is a way to force a restart, after which you should be able to boot into fastboot/recovery and fix whatever issues you're facing. Subsequently, you should be able to shut it down from your ROM's power menu.
From the HTC website:
If HTC One X does not respond when you touch the screen or press the buttons, you can still restart it.
Press and hold the POWER button for at least 10 seconds, and then release it. HTC One X then restarts.

when you hold down the power button, you get three options. top one is power off, middle is airplane mode, bottom one is restart. the top one is the one you want and is the best your going to get as like you say, you cant remove the battery from these phones. dont see why you really need too either other than if the battery dies.
just hold the power button for 5-8 secs and a menu will appear.
Turn off fastboot in Settings. Press and hold the power button with volume down held until you get into the bootloader and select "power down"
Just another method of powering off completely.

That is not possible. The quickest is via the menu apperaing when holding the powerbutton. You could download an app allowing you to power down the device via a shortcut on the homescreen.

HTC ONE X Resets - Please Help

Hey. I have a big problem with my HTC ONE X. When I put it in my pocket it restarts because if you press the power button for over 5 seconds it hard resets. I read somewhere else that the combo for hard reset is the volume and power button. Is this true? If yes why my HTC ONE X resets only with the power button? Can I change it somewhere? Is very annoying because every time I put the phone in my pocket then next time I will unlock the phone it will request my SIM unlock code. Soooo annoying.
Thanks
Long pressing the power button forces the phone to abnormally restart, and the combo takes the phone to bootloader mode.

Oh there is nothing to do about it Just keep it always in my hand I guess.
Press the power button for 10 secs, the phone will have a force restart, which is helpful when it freezes. You can use a cover which makes the power button harder to reach, so it doesnt get pressed when in your pocket.

It is a solution, when you don't have a silicone case as I did, and has the same problem. When I was sit at my ofiice, or car, the power button was pushed, and surprise...restart!!!
I like HOX, but I don't like where they've put the power button!!!
abnormal reset
hiya guys
how about when the handset has not been sitting in your pocket and has been on charge in a location where there has been no chance of the powere button being interfered with, just happened to me 5 mins ago.
cheers

[Q] Capacitive button flash on touch

Hi there...
I wanted to ask you if there is a mod, preferably for the Xposed framework, to achieve the following...
I want the Backlight of the three Capacitive button to flash when pressed, somewhat similar to stock android soft keys, so that when you press it it light up for a sec and then turns back off.

I want them only to turn on when they are touched... like when i press back, only the back button lights up for a sec and then turns back on...
The same for the home and recents buttons...
Just so there is no misunderstanding...

Doesn't CM have a feature to turn the home button into a notification light so it pulsates when you have a notification ?
That would mean that they can be switched on and off individually

All buttons blink with this feature, not only the home button.

How are you actually meant to turn this off?

Did anyone at HTC actually use this device? The power button is an absolute joke. 50% of the time I wind up messing with the volume on my way to turn the phone off and put it back in my pocket.
How do you guys sleep this thing? The nexus 5 buttons are so much better.

i think he is talking about the power button location?
anyway, there are many different ways to turn of the screen.(root needed)
1.swipe2sleep
2.notification double tap on viper rom
3. OR u can just customize a button on ur NAV bar to turn off the phone

First I have a nexus5 also and there is no comparison on the buttons. They rattle when you shake it. Anyways maybe you have a bad device. I just set mine to hold home to turn screen off so I never even have to hit the button but my button works fine if I need it.

Indeed. I'm contemplating a return and sticking with either my moto x or nexus 5 so k won't be rooting it at the moment.
Its bizarre that they added motion gestures basically acknowledging the button isn't great, is there no off gesture?

I will look into this. Seems odd HTC has an "on" method (acknowledging they need one in addition to the sleep button) but not an off button.

Except sometimes, I long press the power button, then I get a short vibration & several options regarding resetting or powering down my phone. Thanks for confirming the presence of the other features tho! I am glad to see that the power button functions to start the device, as well as turn the display on & off. I am certainly happy to discover that the power buttons function didn't change just because HTC located it somewhere other than where LG located it!
Seriously, I also have a N5 (with ZERO button issues, rock solid), but I much prefer the HTC button placement. No accidentally turning the device off while just trying to adjust the volume with only a left hand available at the time.

Yeah, I actually prefer the button being in the top. I never really liked the power button on the side.
My hands aren't big either, if anything they're smaller than an average guy.
It just takes a small shift to turn it off with one hand, just being careful you don't press the volume buttons. Which became easy after a couple days of use for me.
