[Q] How to use USB Micro Thumb drive as external storage - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Giving my 10 year old girl a Nexus 7 2013 for Christmas. Want to load up a dual usb thumb drive (usb and miscro usb) with all her movies. How can i get the Nexus 7 to recognize the thumb drive? The steps need to be easy for my girl. Will probably install VLC to play the videos. Would like to play them directly from the thumb drive. Will root if needed, but prefer not to. But then again, it is most important that it is simple to plug in the thumb, find the movies, and play them.

Just root. ES File Explorer will see the drives. All you need is the adapter. If you have memory cards, get a meenova
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

Mine isn't rooted, but ES file explorer and nexus media importer are still working with such thumbs as well

So after I root I will not need Stickman (or Stickmount?, whatever is the app name?). What is the easiest way to root? I am a computer programmer but have never rooted a device. Must say that I have found it sort of confusing when looking that the various tutorials.

You don't need to root. Nexus 7 comes with USB OTG out of the box. Get an OTG cable, plug in to the Nexus, plug in the thumb drive, it will load up. Should give you a notification once connected. You can download a file browser that you can set a home directory in, and set it as external storage.

Do I need a cable. can't I just use a micro usb thumb drive?

That would probably work just the same. I was just speaking from experience and having an otg cable let's you use anything like a mouse, keyboard, etc. I just know that the thumb drive I had, I plugged it in with an otg cable and the Nexus immediately recognized it. There are a bunch of good file managers out there with the ability to set a home directory as well.

Also, if your Nexus, for whatever reason, doesn't recognize the drive, all you have to do is flash a kernel with otg support, which all the popular ones have.

No, if you have thumb drive with micro USB port it should be enough

I've had no issues with my 64gb SanDisk Dual USB stick. Just plug it into the microUSB port and use ES Explorer if it's formatted in NTFS or FAT32. I have to use StickMount because I left my stick formatted in exFAT.

Which ES File Explorer is everyone referencing? I went to google play and found two, one has a thumbnail of a blue folder and blue ES3 in a white cloud. The other one has a blue folder with white ES in a green circle.

Definitely not the one with the green circle.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
no but there is promise of usb otg I believe some people have been able to get it to work
I was bummed about the inability to add memory, but I've discovered some pretty cool workarounds.
For one, USB mass storage is working on several of the ICS ROMS I've tried, such as Hellfire KS and my new favorite SGT7. By using a powered USB hub and an app called "Stick Mount", I've been able to mount a 32GB flash drive. Because it requires a powered hub, it's not portable, but it's still cool to have that option.
What I like even better are some software solutions I've found which let me access my media over my wifi network, eliminating the need for physical storage:
BS Player - It's a general media player which runs many audio and video formats. Put it in LAN mode and you can browse shared folders on your PC. One really cool feature is that if you play an audio file over LAN, it can automatically add all of the other files in that folder to the playlist.
X-Plore - a really well-made dual pane file browser which can access folders via LAN and FTP. This is nice for backing up large files and such. The dual pane feature makes it super easy to transfer files from one location to the other.
Anyway, I hope that's helpful.

X-plore is awesome, thanks for the tip.
You can add power for OTG with a USB phone charger
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003M9Z5F6
and 2 AAs on a usb y cable and the whole arrangement will fit in your pocket, depending on how tight your pants are.

Is a powered hub needed for any USB device? I've got an OTG cable and a thumb drive is seen by the KF (using StickMount) and I can see the files on it but the drive becomes inaccessible as soon as I try to access any files on it. It seems as if there is just enough power to fire the drive up but not enough to use it.
I like your idea of a battery pack and a Y cable. How do you have the Y cable arranged (i.e. which end of this configuration gets the base of the Y and which ends get the branches)? If you have a link to the Y cable you used that would be a tremendous help as well. I'm searching right now and there are quite a few out there.

I followed this guy's setup, probably a member here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M&feature=youtu.be
Amazon links in the description.
It's pretty self explanatory when you see the y cable, there's a male end which goes to the mini USB otg adapter and the 2 forks of the Y cable end in male and female connectors, battery charger on the male and your portable hub or flash drive or whatever plugs into the female.
Power is not needed for absolutely every USB device, many keyboards work fine without it, but the majority of flash drives and all of them over 8 GB (reportedly) require it.
Thanks Lotek. That's perfect. Can't wait to get this all setup now.

Yep, works great. Got all my music on one flashdrive and movies on others and plays right from the stick. Great app.
Im probably being stupid but can you play games from it?
You probably could check out the app "gl to SD" with stickman and USB stick mounted it should work just gotta make sure the directory paths follow to the USB storage. I used to use that app alot when I had an a100 tab same circumstance no ext sdcard.

It worked great.
Though running a cm10 kang now and usb file system mount is built in.
works for me
yep did the whole usb flash drive and played music off of there using power amp, also hooked up a usb hub with usb stick wireless mouse and keyboard working all at the same time.
just a heads up in case anyone else encounters this problem. was using this app to play music off my usb. had a program called mort music player. it could search for and read the files off the usb. works perfectly. but it creates a folder with like playlist/album art data that stays behind when you remove the usb. this caused stickmount to be unable to unmount the directory. even after a reboot it stayed. all i had to do was delete the usb storage folder that stick mount creates and then stickmount could unmount it.
I installed this app, and connected a SanDisk Cruzer Blade 8GB with OTG cable. Everything works fine, I can browse the drive. But when I remove the drive, the Nexus 7 locks itselfe with a blank screen. About 10-20min later it will wake up, and I can use it again.
When I remove the drive, I first click the StickMount so it unmount then i remove the drive.

Very weird problem. All I can think of is it might have to do with bloatware loaded onto the cruzer? As I recall they mount some crap programs when plugged in?

It doesn't seem to work for me either (Stock Rooted). Mounts the drive but the folder is empty when I open it in a file explorer. Also reboots my N7 when I take the OTG cable out, which I don't recall happening before 4.2.1.
I now use Nexus Media Importer.
It works for me, rooted yesterday. I'm on stock 4.2.1, but I had to stick out/in a few times before I could see the files, might be the usb key though.
Tried some more and still could not get it to work. Gonna give Nexus Media Importer a shot.

USB OTG Cable?

Firstly, is it worth getting a USB OTG cable? What can you use it for? Do you have one?
Second, which one should I get for the Galaxy Nexus? I've seen these two:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Con...=1365625468&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+otg+cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Cable...qid=1365625284&sr=1-23&keywords=usb+otg+cable
Which is better? Is there any difference? Appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Python.
First you have to get the app called Stick Mount if you want to use usb flash drives. But the OTG cable can be used for a lot of things, keyboard, mice,
usb flash drives. I've seen a youtube video where the guy uses a hub and uses all 3.

I was going to get the Nexus Media Importer. But, which cable should I get?
I have a generic usb OTG.
I have successfully used a mouse, usb flash drive, keyboard.
The only thing I couldn't use was my CDMA internet stick.

How much can you do using USB OTG with an unrooted Galaxy Nexus? Most importantly, can you use a memory card reader to copy files from the memory card to the phone or use it to upload the files to Dropbox?
I'm asking on behalf of my sister. I don't have access to her phone so I can't simply try it out. I know USB OTG works great on my rooted Galaxy SIII but I've never had a Nexus device.

As of 4.2 there is native support for USB OTG on the Galaxy Nexus so you don't need any third party app. You can use it without root USB device is mounted as /usbdisk. Try X-plore from the Play Store which shows a separate drive for the USB device you have connected.

See if there's an option in settings>storage as Mount USB storage, if not there use an app such as stick mount or USB OTG helper. Even for using those apps the phone should recognize when a storage device is connected, the pen drive/card reader should light up.
If option is there and still not mounting then any of your devices may be improper check your OTG cable with other phones, your pen drive/card reader.
Clean the contacts of cable and your USB device. Best way to confirm working is to boot to recovery and connect, USB storage is always mounted in recovery mode.

Any decent file explorer should also be able to see mounted storage, especially given 4.2. You may have to browse to root and poke around until you find the appropriate /mnt folder, but set a bookmark (your explorer supports bookmarks, right?) and that should be all she wrote. StickMount is also great for me.
OTG has been really helpful for playing media off of the occasional flash drive, and while using a mouse isn't all too helpful, playing with a full keyboard can make for a surprisingly good experience.

Using OTG Drive...

My Pixel XL sees my OTG drive just fine from within the native file explorer - the one that comes up when you first plug the drive in. But curiously, Astro File Manager can't find the drive, either can PowerAmp. They only see internal storage.
I am careful to select "File Transfer" when the drive is first plugged in, so it doesn't think the drive is a power source.
Any ideas why the drive can't be seen via other means other than the native file explorer?
After some investigation, it appears that having an app access, or play, a file on an OTG drive since Android 6.0 has been a non-starter. Security and permissions in the OS seem to be at the root of it (no pun). Getting 6.0+ devices to see and execute files on an OTG drive - beyond the capability provided by the native file browser - seems to need root and/or other interventions that don't seem worth the effort for me.
If anyone else knows different, please let me know.
For me, having an OTG drive handy has value as I can easily copy files to internal memory in a snap when on-the-go, and simply play them from there with the app of my choice. Alternatively, if I were to push my Pixel to capacity by taking tons of pix and 4K video (not likely) I could easily off-load them to OTG.
You must have some kind of problems because I just tried and I can actually execute files (music, video, apk the ones I tired) from the external USB drive without having to copy them in the internal storage.
Both using the integrated Android default file manager and Solid Explorer (with no OTG-plugin).
Good to hear Matt!
Which OTG drive are you using? Maybe it's a pin-out problem on my particular drive.
No problems for me either. I'm using a Kingston 64GB DataTraveler microDuo 3C (with both USB C and USB A). I can confirm I can access its file directory with Solid Explorer and can play music stored on it with PowerAmp.
As far as I remember when I first connected it, I first tried to access it with Solid Explorer. I was initially directed to the Pixel's stock file explorer and had to make a selection there. After that the drive was fully accessible with Solid. Since then Solid and PowerAmp can access the OTG drive as soon as it's connected and I haven't been prompted to do anything in the stock file manager since.
However I'd like to add that I've since found an OTG drive isn't the same as having an SD card slot. I originally hoped that I could relocate all my music files to the external drive to keep lots of space free on the Pixel (32GB version). Although that is possible, PowerAmp takes about 7 minutes to scan and build its music library (6,000+ HE-AACv2 tunes) whenever I connect the OTG drive, so it's not exactly a fast and seamless alternative to keeping music in internal storage. The drive also gets quite hot when it's being accessed, and I'm not sure if it consumes a lot of power to run.
