[Q] Phones shuts down randomly with sim, works normally without sim - Sony Xperia ZL

My phone shuts down randomly, along with frequent network fluctutations. But when i remove the simcard the phone works fine. I recently flashed the .283 (4.4.4) US version while i am from India. Can it be the reason for this weird behavior? Do different ftf files have different basebands even for same model (c6502) ?
Also can anyone give me the indian baseband flashable by flashtool?

BLUF: Turn of Stamina mode (or whatever super battery saver program your phone has) and uncheck or disable Android Device Manager under Device Administrators.
Try turning off your stamina mode or what ever super battery saving program your phone has. I had the same problem. There is some sort of conflict with US SIMs. While a SIM is sending data (IE not while connected to wifi) and while the phone is sleeping, the SIM (i believe SIM Tool Kit) get stupid confused and tries to wake the phone and then just reboots. This is just a theory. What I do know is that I had random reboot problems when I switched from my European SIM to an American SIM. Same phone, the only change was the SIM. After several days, I found out that it only occurred when idling, with STAMINA mode activated, not connected to Wifi. I was able to constantly recreate the problem to confirm the conflict. It worked for me, I hope it works for you.

similar problem here
I am also facing similar problem. But this is now related to SIM at all.
My symptoms are -
1) Network signal drops and disconnects
2) Phone is not able to send/receive data, especially 2G data
3) Phone reboots randomly. This happens right after there are data send/receive issues
4) Lately, phone is not able to reboot at all. Sometimes SONY appears and phone goes off. Sometimes this happens after XPERIA, sometimes after boot is complete phone goes off.
I am not sure why this is happening. This started happening after gsam battery monitor was installed. I uninstalled that, but problem is not solved. And frequency of this seems to be increasing day by day.
I am trying repair in PC companion now, but not sure if this is useful.
Phone details - Xperia ZL, C6502, 4.4.4 build 10.5.1.A.0.283, 13 months old, India
Anybody else having similar issue? Any solutions?

Never buy sony again
Finally, my phone died.
Symptoms were not exactly like battery issue mentioned by others. But at the end this seems like battery issue only.
Phone works ok when connected to charger. Once you remove, it dies within 5 minutes.
Went to sony service center, they almost refused to repair it. Asking me to either buy refurbished one or buy another SONY with discount.
This is insane and utterly irresponsible.
They should be able to repair any phone released in last 2 years at minimum. They are saying that they cannot repair this specific model! I dont know how true this is.
This is extremely disappointing, I would never buy SONY product again. And would also appeal fellow members to do the same.
This phone lasted only for 14months. Warranty is only for 12 months, so my bad luck.
This battery issue is clearly a design flaw. Whats more shocking is that they are not ready to do anything to it, even when I am ready to pay for it. I am feeling like going to consumer court.
Compare this to Nokia 5800, which I repaired(broken lcd screen) after 3 years without any fuss, just 4k rs and 1 day! and it was ready to go...
I hate sony now and would ask fellow Indian users at least to refrain from Sony(as we buy phones off contract with meager 1 year warranty). I am so disappointed that now paying more than 10k for 1 year warranty seems very illogical to me! I am now all for micromax, xiomi and all such cheap phones! They are much much more value for money than this sony crap.

Mobile Network Drop

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but i randomly get mobile network drops once or twice a week. The phone works perfectly well but the mobile network just drops, you cannot scan for network at all. The only way i have found around it is to enable plane mode to drop all connections and then turn plane mode back off so the network starts up. This often takes between 5 - 10 mins for it to kick in.
Tried two roms but now back to stock but still happening.
Have you tried flashing the latest radio? They are listed in the dev section.
The recent OTA 1.21.405.2 update included a new radio I think. Did you put this on too?
Since then, I have also been having the network drop out. I am missing a lot of calls as a result. Prior to this update I had two months of problem-free operation on my stock 2.1 ROM.
From reading the google forums, this is a wide-spread issue. The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be that people updating to 2.2 froyo seem to see the problem stop. Two weeks to wait for us stock ROM boys according to the rumours then! Fingers crossed.
It's a bit embarrassing having this flashy toy when it struggles to be a phone at random intervals. At the weekend one of my less techy friends was waving his Nokia 6210i in my face saying, "At least I can make and recieve calls!". So I changed the language on his phone to Turkish when he left it lying about. The old ones are the best.
I am going to test the 1.21.405.2 theory by doing a factory reset later this week when I have time. Problem should persist if it is the new radio. Will post back with the results.
OK did a factory reset this morning. I left all my apps off, and did not set back up any google account business. I basically left it as a standard mobile phone.
Within 7 hours, guess what....yes it's lost the connection again. Strongly believe this is a radio problem. I'm too noob to know if I can flash the radio without rooting. Anyone?
I have since submitted my complaint with HTC CS. Will await their response, and post it here.
In the interim, turning airplane mode off and on again does regain the connection, and I have installed an app from the market place called "No Coverage Alert". It will now beep and buzz if I loose the connection so at least I will be aware every time it bombs out. Far from ideal but should do for now.
Watch this space.
Yes i have tried the two radios posted but i havent tried any international ones such as europe or asia. I still randomly get network drop and i need to turn radio off and back on again for it to pick up.
Maybe i should ask a chef if these drops are logged anywhere on the device so i can root in and look at the logs myself and diagnose what the network drop is on my phone.
Just to confirm, tried multiple radios and roms, i know exactly what i am doing all i would like is explaination of why it happens. It is not user error as i have tried with stock rom, no fancy apps etc to stop it from working or changing config.
its got something to do with the network radio libs that need a service restart. i am 100% sure if i rooted in and knew which service to restart it would work also
Erm.... this is a little embarrassing but I feel I need to own up to prevent misleading anyone. I have arranged with HTC customer support to send my Desire back for repair. They pick it up Monday.
I bought a cheap £10 phone to keep me going. It arrived this morning. After I had finished laughing at it, I put the SIM card in and powered up the phone.
"No SIM card instered" was the message it greeted me with. After numerous power-up and power downs, and some SIM card hoakee-coakee, it finally recognised the SIM card......then dropped the signal to Orange. EXACTLY what my HTC Desire did.
Doh.
I had tried the SIM card in another phone (my girlfriends Blackberry) when the problems first started and it had worked straight away. But the SIM card seems to be random in it's failures. Should have tested more rigorously.
Sorry guys but in my instance it seems I have simply a faulty SIM card. The first one I have ever had go wrong in 12 years, but there you go. I was too fast to blame Android/HTC.
A|ex, please try your SIM card in another handset. Do several power-ups to see if it goes wrong. Would explain why trying numerous radios/ROMs has not helped you.
Let me know?
I had the same issue. Talked all day and evening, then toyed around with the phone a little, flashed a new ROM, no connection. oO okay, that's weird. Tried 3 different ROMs, reset to factory settings. Went to Orange, the SIM was borked. Thankfully, getting a new one took all of 5 minutes and didn't cost me a dime.
Yep. Was the SIM card. The new one arrived from Orange this morning. Popped it in and it's working straight away. My 3G has even improved slightly I reckon.
Six hours of use and not one drop yet.
Thank god for that.

[Q] HTC Desire Z - Serious Call Issue

Hi Guys,
First off, I am using the Desire Z unlocked on Telus. I do not have my phone rooted, nor unbranded. It is completely stock (Bell Branded) only modification was the unlock via unlock code. The phone is running 1.34.666.5 software, and kernel 2.6.32.21 if that helps anyone. I purchased via a friend, who gave me the original purchase receipt (for warranty purposes). However he has since left for Kingston now that the holidays are over.
The problem I am experiencing is via my calls. About 75% of my calls experience random mutes, where the other person can hear me, but I hear just silence. Sometimes it will happen soon after a call, sometimes 20 minutes into a call, completely random timing and duration. Most of the times, the other person will hang up thinking it is their phone and call me back again, only to have the same problem again...
It gets worse though. About 25% of the time, people on the other end have told me via text, since they can't hear me, that my sound is coming very scrambled. Like an alien frequency jumbled up. I can't explain the sound but I've heard it and it sounds really weird. Obviously, they hang up, and call back but the same sound remains.
My only temporary solution to these problems is to restart my phone. I don't know how long I will be able to talk on the phone again before one of these two problems hit me again, at which point I have to do another reset.
I find myself resetting the phone about 5 times a day.
My hope is that this is a software issue, and that an update will fix this scrambing/muting out problem. I wanted to know if anyone else had any sort of issue with this, or what I can do to resolve this.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Maybe it is a network issue?
Try making calls from a friends SIM card.
What provider are you with?
Maybe try popping your SIM into another phone and trying that too...
If not you'll need to try to get a new phone.
I am with Telus as my Carrier.
I will try the sim in another phone. I would hate to have to return it without the original purchaser being present - I imagine not being a Bell customer (even though I have the original reciept) would make it more tricky.
I *really* doubt that it is a hardware problem.
In fact, I've heard those kinds of noises from other phones (i.e. RIM) calling me from the belus network (I use globalive... much better.)
Possibly a radio update might improve compatibility, could also be sim related.
I suggest that you root the thing, upgrade to the latest radio firmware, and install either tmo-ota or cm-mod on it. Also try using it on a DIFFERENT network (it is also compatible with robbers, but not globalive) and try using it on the SAME network with a different sim card.
Bell and Telus' new WCDMA network stinks. It is super weak as for now they put up the minimum towers to get full coverage. What that means is anything to anything will interfere with the signal strength. If I had my choice I would go back to Rogers in a heartbeat.
You issues sound exactly like a loss of signal issue.
My wife has a bell desire z and it had the same problem. Should I return for a new one?

Just one more thing. If it is a network related issue (bell). Why does my Samsung Galaxy S on the same network not have this issue? I think it is hardware related.

I have experienced the identical issue a few times and I discovered it happens when you are on a call and the phone either switches to or tries to connect to a wireless network. My specific incidents have always been with a bluetooth connected however. Try turning off the wifi........
That is interesting because her wifi is on when it happens.

I've just had the same problem... I've had the phone for around 26 days now and this is the first time this problem has happened. Anyone else solve it yet? I haven't even switched on the wifi.

If you are certain that wifi was never on, then we need to call Bell.................
Desire call issue
Hey guys,
Having the same issue, this is my second desire for the same scrambled issue. it sucks. sounds like a transformer is in phone.
I'm leaning toward that it's a carrier issue, not a hardware issue. Seeing how there are several people posting they have tried it on different phones and still had the issue, it would show that the hardware is identical between the devices. Also, seeing how people are having issues are localized to the one carrier, that would also make a difference.
I would like to state that I think rooting the phone and flashing a new radio update may fix the issue. If it doesn't, it could be that the radio in the phone just isn't built to process the network. But since it can physically pick up the signal, it may be how the software is transferring it, which is why you're having the issue, which is why I am recommending a root/radio fix.
In regards to the Samsung Galaxy S being brought up, it's different hardware, different software. Though it runs on the Android OS, Samsung uses it's own hardware and scripting, so it may be built to handle the connection better. It's the reason why for the longest time they were having GPS issues and we weren't (at least for the Vibrant variation of the phone).
That's just my humble opinion from my own dealings with phones though
Can confirm it happens when wifi is off.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I have had it happen 4 or 5 times and I have owned the phone for 5 months. Twice BT was connected as well. It has only rarely occurred for me...
My room mate is having the Same issue, stock Bell Desire Z on Bell network. The only two ways I have found so far to fix the issue is ether re-boot the phone or put it into airplane mode and then out of airplane mode. Doing a power off and then back on does NOT fix the problem (using fastboot), i'm sure it would fix it with the fastboot feature turned off.
Turning the radio on and off again fixes the issue so I am guessing it is a software issue. The Desire Z is an upgrade from an iPhone 3GS using the same SIM card on the same account, the iPhone never had the issue over the period of 1 full year.
Same Problem...
Hi everyone,
I wish there were a simple solution to this problem. My phone is doing the same thing (unlocked on the Telus network). I've researched this issue and found out that many people have also had the problem with the alien gurgling noise regardless of which network they're on.
I've had this problem occur regardless of wifi being on or off. It has nothing to do with the type of phone you're calling (as one Bell rep suggested). The problem is with receiving and dialing out calls. I've had several different types of phones while on this network and have never had this problem before. As for letting the problem sort itself out on it's own over time, that also doesn't work.
I brought my phone into Bell to be looked at. They thought the problem was the speaker. So they changed it and returned the phone to me. The first day I turned it on and activated it, the problem was back and worse than before. Couldn't make a successful phone call all day. So now it's back in the shop...again! The Bell rep said he's heard of this problem quite a few times. Something like 1 in 10 Desire Z's has this problem (that number sounds quite high to me). But yet, it doesn't look like these guys have a fix for the issue.
I love my Desire Z but I'm more than fed up because it's practically useless. I'm stuck using my iPhone again (not crazy about it at all) while I hunt for a replacement phone that will be comparable to the Desire Z (that will also work on the Telus network). Any ideas or suggestions? I was considering the Motorola Droid 2 Global but it didn't stand up to the Desire in speed/keyboard feel.
Thanks for listening!
P.S. - My phone was never rooted. Just unlocked.
Your all holding it wrong D: . Jk but I havnt had this issue but my gf tells me that it happens to her

No more signal?

Hey guys,
I'm with Vodafone UK (notorious for their bad signal coverage) but this morning when I woke up, my HOX has had absolutely no signal.
I've tried everything I can think of to resolve the issues, standard restart, hard restart, removing the sim card etc. but to no avail.
I also wondered if it was maybe Vodafone having a bad day too and asked my friends who are also with them, if they had any signal. They all have full signal.
Then i checked the settings on my device, phone identity.
For some reason, the IMEI, IMEI SV, IMSI and phone number are now all unknown. I'm not really sure what this means, but I know they normally have something underneath them.
This has led me to believe its an issue with my sim card/contract whatever... maybe I haven't paid my contract so Vodafone cut me off, went online and checked. Everything has been paid for.
Got any suggestions as to whats wrong and how I can resolve this please?
Hi,
I had a similar problem (also on Vodafone, but it may just be coincidental). I had no signal for a couple of days and thought it was due to a screw up during my number porting from O2.
Anyway, after 2 days of calling customer services and having my SIM swapped twice I went into the store and they replaced my phone. It's fine now.
Funny enough I also woke up to phone having zero signal, but am with o2. After 1min or even less signal came back.
just got off the phone to the Vodafone people.
After trying my sim card in my friends Vodafone HOX (black), I got signal. This has led me to believe its a hardware issue, but despite this the phonerep still insisted it might be a software issue (I have the latest OTA update, same as my friend and his is fine? NB: his device doesnt have the flicker issue unlike mine).
Will have to visit the local store to have the shop monkey tell me the dreaded, "we'll have to send it away for repair" probably. If this is the case, the phonerep said I would probably have to pay for any repairs/new handset as I dont have insurance. Is that fair because I'm still well within warranty..?
Sounds about right, if you within your 28 days you can ask for a replacement. As per rules. Even HTC say to replace. Anything after 28 days needs to be sent to HTC for repair. You shouldn't have to pay for any repairs it should be covered under warranty. They can refuse or charge if you have tampered with it, as in did the HTC unlock and installed a custom rom.
See what the shop says, if HTC do charge then kick up a big fuss.
No issues with my vodafone sim in mine, however had terrible issues with GG, kept losing sim card I assumed it was a faulty sim card causing the issues.
Hey there, my girlfriend is on Vodafone with an iPhone 4S, she lost her signal yesterday morning and still hasn't had it back bar a five minute window this afternoon. she lives near a place called Devizes (its in Wiltshire) but her mum had it back from last night, I don't know anyone else on Vodafone so I don't know how far it has spread.
Edited to add: you can check for reported signal/mast issues here (http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Faults-Board/bd-p/69) the bit on the right of the first set of numbers in the thread title is the start of the postcode for the area the mast is based.
Think I'm a few days past the 28 days, just my luck! And I haven't done anything to the phone whatsoever, everything is stock.
More evidence that something's gone wrong... After leaving it on charge all night (as per), the battery has dropped from 100% to 14% in the space of 4 hours with just some casual wifi usage. It's also extremely quick to heat up now, and thats just from leaving it on charge.
If they make me pay for a blatant hardware issue I will kick up a massive fuss. Why should I pay to have the manufacturer fix a phone that has clearly been made to an unsatisfactory level?

[Q] Drops calls, loses reception, works only after reboots

Hello guys. I have some major issues with my S3. In general it has very weak reception compared to my S1. I've had two providers KPN HI and Tele 2, the latter uses t-mobile's network. With both providers and several different sim cards I encounter the same problems. Not only is reception in general weaker than my S1, it also drops calls very frequently. Mind you, I live in central Amsterdam, where I've never had reception problems with any provider at all. Sometimes when signal drops it comes back after 10 to 20 seconds. Sometimes it's completely gone and I have to reboot the phone to get service again. On average, I have to reboot the phone 6 to 8 times a day. The phone is on stock rom, latest firmware.
My s3 has been to samsung repair two times. The first time they checked for software issues. After a week they told me they couldn't find anything wrong, but they updated to the latest firmware. The problems were still there. They then took my phone for 3 weeks. When I got it back they couldn't say if they found the problem, but the phone went through general inspection (?) so it should be fine. Wrong. Literally one hour after having back my phone I tried calling someone. I was standing outside, had 4 bars of reception, but got dropped out of the conversation after 3 seconds. The no service symbol was showing. I rebooted and tried to call again. This time it worked. After an hour I checked my phone and surely, the no service symbol was showing again.
I'm getting very tired of this. I have a 550 euro phone that doesn't make me do phone calls 2 out of 3 times. People calling me have complained that they get voicemail instantly. I called Samsung and they told me they couldn't do anything but take the phone in for repair again. The shop where I purchased the phone says the same thing. I have no choice but to send it to repair, which means that I will lose my phone for at least 3 weeks again.
If someone can offer me advice, please, I would appreciate it very much. I wish I didn't gave away my s1...
Edit: Should've posted this in the general s3 sub.
Ask them for expedited repair and shipping, Samsung does a pretty good job and helping out when you're nice and friendly with them.
Let them know the situation, tell them you don't want to cause any problems, but that this is the third time you've sent the phone, if they can kindly either do a more thorough review of the phone and figure out what's wrong with it and fix it or give you a different new/refurbished phone. Or something.

AT&T network constantly disconnects

I'm not sure if this is in the correct section or not but I am having a very irritating and annoying issue with AT&T. I previously had a Moto Atrix 2 that ended up ****ting out on me due to faulty hardware (and then Moto wouldn't honor their warranty) so I bought the Sony Xperia ion since I have always liked Sony and their products. In between my Atrix dying and buying my ion I was using a very outdated (but amazing for its' time) Sony Ericsson w810i as a backup phone. The W810i kept giving me issues with my SIM card, it was always ever one of two error messages: The phone would make a noise and bug out for a minute before displaying "Insert SmartChip" as if I turned the phone on without a SIM installed. The other wouldn't make a noise at all, it would just display "Inactive SIM" where "AT&T" or "Emergency calls only" would normally be displayed on the phone's screen. Now, I assumed that this was because I bought the phone used, it's a six year old phone, and my Micro Sim to Regular SIM (homemade) adaptor might not have aligned the brass contacts up 100% every time.
However, now I have a brand new shiny Xperia ion. I love the phone and I love ICS. However, and I cannot remember if this issue happened with 2.3.7 or not too, but I will be texting or browsing the web and I will end up trying to send something, search or click on something when my phone alerts me that I have no network connection. And when I say no network connection, I mean absolutely nothing. No 4G/LTE/any other data, no phone bars. the corner of my phone displays the 5 grayed out bars with a red X next to it. The notification pull down menu that normally displays "AT&T" will display "No Service." Normally, everything returns slowly, in a matter of a few minutes. First I get my bars back, it'll display "Emergency Calls Only," then "AT&T," before finally I have full service and 4G again. But not LTE. Normally LTE does not come back and the only way I have found to reestablish an LTE connection is to restart the phone.
This is an enormous pain in the ass! For obvious reasons. Especially since I will be texting someone back and forth with no problem and then when I go to send a reply, boom, all of a sudden no service. Sometimes I will pull my phone out of my pocket and go to search something and there will be no service. This happens seemingly regardless to location. It happens on the street, at my school, in my apartment, in my room in my apartment - This issue happens anywhere where I would normally get 5 bars and LTE service. And on top of it all it will happen multiple times in a day, sometimes 3 or 4 times. Sometimes it will even happen within 10 minutes of it just happening!
I am having a hard time figuring out if this is an AT&T issue or a phone issue. Like I said with my Atrix 2 I had no issues with randomly losing network connection. With my W810i it would always have SIM card read issues (btw, I did end up getting a new SIM card when I bought my ion) and with the 810i it would happen close to 6 times a day, sometimes restarting the phone back to a "insert SmartChip" screen and having to do it all over again.
Im thinking that if the issues I am having are the same between the Sony Ericsson and the Sony that the ion just displays it differently since it is a smartphone and can function without needing a SIM card in it.
So my question is has anyone else on AT&T having a similar issue with the Xperia ion? Or has anyone had issues with any previously owned Sony or Sony Ericsson phones?
Haven't had connection issues in my ion, Xperia S,P, or Play with AT&T like you described.
Sent from my Sony Xperia™ ion
never had your issue before. have you tried repair through sony pc companion? if not then try it first but remember to back up your data
if yes but didn't solve the problem then it should either be your new SIM card's problem or just the phone's hardware problem
I'm having the same problem, chatted with Sony and they gave me an issue # and told me to send it to them. My att service has always sucked from my house but now is non-existence.

I realize this is a year old but I just wanted to report back that since switching to a non Sony android phone (LG if it really matters) I have not had this issue once. My best guess is it's some Sony issue.

You where not alone on this. I have a LT28at and had the same issue with JB only. After I switched to the Rogers JB I have had zero issue. While running a att base band on 211h it would work for some time but randomly drop resulting in no service. Then it would come back with no LTE what so ever. The only way I could fix it was to start over with a fresh flash. Very few of us ever had this happen and it seems to only effect the 28at version.
