Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but i randomly get mobile network drops once or twice a week. The phone works perfectly well but the mobile network just drops, you cannot scan for network at all. The only way i have found around it is to enable plane mode to drop all connections and then turn plane mode back off so the network starts up. This often takes between 5 - 10 mins for it to kick in.
Tried two roms but now back to stock but still happening.
Have you tried flashing the latest radio? They are listed in the dev section.
The recent OTA 1.21.405.2 update included a new radio I think. Did you put this on too?
Since then, I have also been having the network drop out. I am missing a lot of calls as a result. Prior to this update I had two months of problem-free operation on my stock 2.1 ROM.
From reading the google forums, this is a wide-spread issue. The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be that people updating to 2.2 froyo seem to see the problem stop. Two weeks to wait for us stock ROM boys according to the rumours then! Fingers crossed.
It's a bit embarrassing having this flashy toy when it struggles to be a phone at random intervals. At the weekend one of my less techy friends was waving his Nokia 6210i in my face saying, "At least I can make and recieve calls!". So I changed the language on his phone to Turkish when he left it lying about. The old ones are the best.
I am going to test the 1.21.405.2 theory by doing a factory reset later this week when I have time. Problem should persist if it is the new radio. Will post back with the results.
OK did a factory reset this morning. I left all my apps off, and did not set back up any google account business. I basically left it as a standard mobile phone.
Within 7 hours, guess what....yes it's lost the connection again. Strongly believe this is a radio problem. I'm too noob to know if I can flash the radio without rooting. Anyone?
I have since submitted my complaint with HTC CS. Will await their response, and post it here.
In the interim, turning airplane mode off and on again does regain the connection, and I have installed an app from the market place called "No Coverage Alert". It will now beep and buzz if I loose the connection so at least I will be aware every time it bombs out. Far from ideal but should do for now.
Watch this space.
Yes i have tried the two radios posted but i havent tried any international ones such as europe or asia. I still randomly get network drop and i need to turn radio off and back on again for it to pick up.
Maybe i should ask a chef if these drops are logged anywhere on the device so i can root in and look at the logs myself and diagnose what the network drop is on my phone.
Just to confirm, tried multiple radios and roms, i know exactly what i am doing all i would like is explaination of why it happens. It is not user error as i have tried with stock rom, no fancy apps etc to stop it from working or changing config.
its got something to do with the network radio libs that need a service restart. i am 100% sure if i rooted in and knew which service to restart it would work also
Erm.... this is a little embarrassing but I feel I need to own up to prevent misleading anyone. I have arranged with HTC customer support to send my Desire back for repair. They pick it up Monday.
I bought a cheap £10 phone to keep me going. It arrived this morning. After I had finished laughing at it, I put the SIM card in and powered up the phone.
"No SIM card instered" was the message it greeted me with. After numerous power-up and power downs, and some SIM card hoakee-coakee, it finally recognised the SIM card......then dropped the signal to Orange. EXACTLY what my HTC Desire did.
Doh.
I had tried the SIM card in another phone (my girlfriends Blackberry) when the problems first started and it had worked straight away. But the SIM card seems to be random in it's failures. Should have tested more rigorously.
Sorry guys but in my instance it seems I have simply a faulty SIM card. The first one I have ever had go wrong in 12 years, but there you go. I was too fast to blame Android/HTC.
A|ex, please try your SIM card in another handset. Do several power-ups to see if it goes wrong. Would explain why trying numerous radios/ROMs has not helped you.
Let me know?
I had the same issue. Talked all day and evening, then toyed around with the phone a little, flashed a new ROM, no connection. oO okay, that's weird. Tried 3 different ROMs, reset to factory settings. Went to Orange, the SIM was borked. Thankfully, getting a new one took all of 5 minutes and didn't cost me a dime.
Yep. Was the SIM card. The new one arrived from Orange this morning. Popped it in and it's working straight away. My 3G has even improved slightly I reckon.
Six hours of use and not one drop yet.
Thank god for that.

I have an original Desire bought in Norway, and imported (and hence VAT free!) to the UK, using my T Mobile SIM that has worked perfectly well in my G2/Hero.
Every few minutes or so, irrespective of how many connection bars, the network will suddenly drop off, and I get the "Cross of doom" on the reception icon.
If I am in the message app (standard HTC messages), and this happens, it will kick me off any message I was composing at the time, and I have to start again when the connection is back. It will also have no messages in the inbox until the network is back some seconds later and everything loads. It's almost like a blackout all of a sudden.
It will drop calls for the same reason, and 10 seconds or so I am back on connection.
I sent it back to HTC using the Global Warranty Scheme, who have changed the Main Board, FOC, and collected/delivered by courier. Very efficient service BTW. I was so disappointed to find it still having the same problem.
I have also exchanged my SIM with T Mobile for a new one (Same number). I have ordered a Vodfone PAYG SIM just to experiemt the likelyhood it may be the network provider. However, it looks more like the radio suffers a sudden loss of power, and conks out.
The APN settings have been set to WCDMA only (changed from AUTO/WCDMA) as it seemed to sort it out, but I got excited too soon.
At my wits end, as the phone is miles ahead of my G2 in so many ways, and I love it, but I don't know whether it's a T Mobile issue or if I should send it back to HTC again. As it's not provided by T Mobile, and I have another 7 months left of my contract, I am stuck if it's network related.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
OK...have now popped the PAYG Vodafone SIm into the phone, and it barely has reception and drops out too.
...so have phoned HTC again, and UPS will once again be collecting it on Monday. I asked what happens if a fault is still not found, and after the third return I can apply to have the phone replaced by HTC. It's not ideal, but beats having to pay for a flight to exchange it abroad.
Still, if anyone have any suggestions, please let me know!

Just an FYI, but I too am on T-Mobile, and recently replace my G2 with a Desire.
I find the network reception on the Desire is much better than on my G2, and I've no problems with dropped connections.
I know this doesn't help you, but it does point to the problem being your particular device.

Dave

Thanks Dave, this does strengthen the case thinking it's the device. HTC were pretty swift in returning the device last time, so if it means a week X 2 being without it, I can live with that as I can then ask for it to be replaced on warranty direct from HTC.
I have the same issue with a Stock Desire from Vodafone..
Signal drops but more often it fluctuates like hell ... calls are dropped...
or other people can't hear me properly ...
Maybe it is an issue that will be resolved with a "Radio" update from HTC ?
Does someone know maybe this happened in the past with other HTC handsets and got sorted out later..
It is really buggy...
my girlfriend is having the same issues with her Desire
we applied the official update that was released a week or 2 ago (with a new radio) but that didn't solve the issue
sometimes she also hears a weird sound before the call goes dead..
did anybody have any luck in getting this solved?
will a custom rom fix the issues?
thanks!
coming from a htc hd2 (switched for this particular reason) i can report that this has happened on many htc phones, it is NOT a device problem, it has been mostly linked to your location and interference (buildings etc) as the frequencies used by the latest htc antennas use a frequency which does not penetrate as well.
you can read the 50 or so pages of it for the hd2, SOME progress has been made but never fixed, the only hope is HTC releasing a fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614119
thanks for your fast reply!
I checked the thread you mentioned but it seems to be all about internet issues
my girlfriend never uses mobile internet so the issues she has are call related
these don't happen every day but every few days
about once every 3 weeks she gets a total signal drop which can only be solved by rebooting (this seems to be something mentioned in the thread)
then again most probably internet, call and signal issues are most likely to be caused by the radio so it could be the same problem..
is anybody experiencing the same weird loud static noise sound from time to time before a call gets auto-ended?
I just want to get all the facts straight because she is planning on sending it back to HTC for repair but if it's a new radio flash she needs there is no point in sending it back
sorry for the long post
Why don't you try setting it on AUTO, or GSM only, even better?
Sound like sudden loss of WCDMA connection.
tried that this week but the issue still remains..
is this something that can be fixed by flashing a custom rom?
or do we need to wait for HTC to provide another radio?
Maybe....
Maybe this is not your case but I want to share with you.
I had the same problem with Hero and then with the Desire. It was very frustrating. Then I got it: all the programs like auto-killer. task-killer etc were acting killing (apparently random) my voice call. Incredible ! Now I have the same Disre, but I haven't installed any task killer or task manager. The device works good and I don't have dropped calls anymore
Again, maybe it's not your case. Maybe could be helpful for someone else...
Just try if you have some task killer installed. Uninstall it
Hi guys.
So I've been going through the painful process of logging a network fault with vodafone here in Australia, just to be told 10 minutes ago that my job has been closed and put down to a handset issue.
My issue is probably best described by this little video I've shot of my phone in action: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=abebdf487d4ef439&id=ABEBDF487D4EF439!849
As you'll see, in the browser I will click a link and the loading bar will show that it's starting to do something. Reception will sit on 3G (no loading yet) flick to H (no loading yet) flick back to 3G (no loading yet) and then back to H and will load the page. Now I understand that going between 3G and H is normal behaviour, but in my situation not a single iota of data is transferred until it's gone back and forth, often taking 5-7 seconds for each request.
Now here's the odd part that makes troubleshooting really annoying. Putting another vodafone sim in my phone has the same problem. Putting my sim in another vodafone handset works fine. But putting a Telstra (our countries biggest telco with a 3g network that trumps everything else in OZ) sim in works flawlessly with pages loading instantly, even midway through an 3g/H transition.
I have updated to 4.0.2, experimented with various radios all to no avail. Vodafone has told me to take it into a store for them to deal with, but I'm really not keen on trying to convince a salesman that I actually have a problem and then being without a phone for 2 weeks, only for it to be sent back after a reflash with the problem remaining. Does anyone have any other ideas before I bite the bullet and take it in?
I'll have to bump this one, any ideas, anyone?
final bump
Hi Hinee,
I live in Argentina and I'm suffering the same thing. I used to have a Nexus One and 3G worked perfectly, now since I made the change I'm having the same issue you described. As you did, I tried with different radios to no avail.
Now, I find curious what you say about the SIM cards because it relates wot what I read in another forum. I just found a post somewhere else (sorry I didnt save the link) which says that the age of the SIM card may have something to do with the issue.
I haven't been able to test it yet, nor do I know enought about cellphones to know if its coherent or not, but I'll be calling my carrier today and ask for a SIM replacement to see if that solves the issue.
I'll let you know if that works for me.
I am curious if anyone has heard of this happening, on any phone, or on GN2?
I activated my new phone yesterday. It did not "take" for about 20 minutes, at which point my old phone was disabled, another 20 min or so til the new one started working. Fine, slightly inconvenient but no biggie. (that isn't the issue, just some history)
I received the welcome att free text...but then nothing. No calling, no texting, no net-no network at all. I waited a while longer, then I saw a 4g...then I received a couple texts. Cool. THEN it stopped working again. For a while calling/texting worked w/o data...then none of it...then it started working again. It was a very odd thing how it worked, didn't, worked, didn't, etc. I "chatted" with ATT at which point it began working again. Then...it didn't...again. I ended up driving to the att store over lunch where they suggested a bad sim card (even though it was new) and swapped me a new one. Worked. Problem solved? NOPE. Damn!
What I figured out is that when I connected to wifi at my workplace, the network stopped working altogether! After shutting off wifi, it took a good 10 min to come back. Maddening. I called customer service and they had no idea, even though the dude was very personable & tried to help. ANOTHER trip to the att store after work...where they looked at me as if I had 3 heads, at this point...!
The girl who waited on me did a factory reset, and that SEEMS to have fixed the problem. What I wanted to do is an exchange, but they had none in stock (plus I didn't have my box with me.) She explained they don't know much about GN2 yet as it is very new, etc. Great. Thank you, Cap't Obvious!
Has ANYONE heard of this happening? Is it defective? Was there some setting somewhere that got changed? I really didn't think I goofed it up changing things but.... ATT dude #2 via phone suggested perhaps some sort of "do not disturb" setting while wifi is on? I have never heard of that and he was just reaching for straws I know, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
I was so excited about my new phone then this frustrating network thing happened! Even though I received it Friday I waited to activate it til Tuesday when my CASE arrived. I've been such a patient little girl (lol) so needless to say I've not been a happy camper. (ps all this was on my birthday yesterday, to boot! Go fig lmao)
My new sim took like 20 min to activate on the network too, but since then I'm golden.
Hi there
i own a galaxy S3 TMobile version for 2 months now.
I recently update on last rom and since then i am getting the following error.
Sim card removed. Replace the sim with a valid sim and restart/reboot the phone.
I am not really sure if i wrote the message exactly as it appears but thats the meaning of it.
I have unlocked the phone to use it on Greece.
I have the same sim on it, since the beggining.
I didnt had the problem before the update. And for sure the problem poped up some days after the update.
When i see that msg the most of the times (if not always) data is enabled.
I should also say that when i see that msg the phone is just sitting untouched. Phone has never dropped or anything like that.
For sure its annoying.
When i restart phone sim is working perfectly...... ..
Has anyone heared about it? Anyone who faces the same prolem and found a solution?
I tried to google it ut i came up with no answers...
Any help is welcome.
Thank you in advance
have u tried a different SIM yet?

I had the same kind of issue on my previous phone. However, there is no data on my phone that I had to reboot my phone a few times to establish data connection. Secondly, sometime I missed called. Replacing SIM card may not help either. A few people had reported the same kind of issue on T-Mobile Support site.

I tthought I was the only one plagued by this issue..
I have this same issue. It usually happens whenever I lose network coverage......it happens repeatedly.. This issue started happening after I updated to jelly bean...ICS had no problems..
I have changed my sim 3 times, installed several touch wiz custom ROMs, changed my base bands and kernel...The issue remains prevalent after all these..
The only way I have been able to resolve this issue is by switching to an AOSP ROM like cm10 or paranoid android rom
I hope a fix for this issue is found soon cos i am tired of restarting my phone everytime i lose network coverage
I have attached a screenshot showing this
replacement sim ractified the problem

I had the same problem the other day when I was driving home from work. I think it happened when I went from 4G to 2G coverage. And also, when I'm in 2G coverage, signal fades out completely and comes back on 10 secs or so later. I went to Tmobile and replaced my sim with a new one and I had no problem of such ever since. .. at least so far so good.

Believe me I have Odin end back to stock n the issue still persists.....changing sim cards is only a temporary solution....
The problem always comes back especially if you always in an area with no network signal
Warranty exchange! Samsung should replace it. Say won't read sim card. Or tmobile

It seems that it happens when the data signal is bad.
Yesterday i had to reboot more than 3 times inside in a 4h period.

First & foremost,
How did you "unlock" your phone? Did you mess with the NV data??
Or were you a good boy & had T-Mobile do it for you?
It sort of sounds like T-Mobile may have disabled your SIM card altogether....which may happen if you screwed around with the NV data.
If it was properly unlocked by T-Mobile you should be able to stick whatever SIM card in there now. Easy to test, go down the street to your nearest Greek mobile telecom store & ask if you can test a prepaid SIM card in your phone. Assuming the GSM networks are to some degree similar to the US T-Mobile networks, you should even be completely in good shape using local GSM service.
*IF* you get the same issues with the local SIM card....well screw it then. Go protest in the streets about the austerity measures in effect at the moment. Or just be a lazy Greek bastard & demand 14 months salary paid, require retirement at age 50 and lastly *NEVER* pay property tax on anything.

Besides that i have a backup of the nv data but i am pretty sure that isnt the problem.

LOL? What is that? Everyone around the world is talking about the Greek people and have no clue of what it really happens. I work 12-14 hours per day including weekends.... i pay more than 600 Euros on taxes per month and i ll never get those money back since retirement is at 70 yo!!! Most of the people are like this. Foking politicians and goverments who have been stealing money for so many years. That was the problem and not the people!
I wish i knew why you mention all these!

I'm having the same issue with my s3
I tried to unlock it using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
I'm not sure if it worked, but perhaps messing with NV data screwed something up??
I upgraded to jelly bean 4.1.1
I tried cleaning the contacts on the sim
I replaced the sim at WIND
I even tried a factory reset
Nothing worked so far.
Has anyone figured out why it's doing this? Is it hardware related? software related?

In the same boat as you...I thought i was the only one..
on wind's sgh-t999v Galaxy SIII ... unlocked it like you did, and I'm getting a no sim card, restart required error, get it about every 8 hours or so..
i ported my number over too, but it says under "my phone number" in settings.. has a completely different number than what I'm currently using.. not sure if that has any effect..
tried restoring to factory settings too.. nothing seems to work...
if anyone has any info that would be much appreciated...
From the cold boot and after the error message goes away, does your phone has data connection?
I got the same error message on my previous phone. However, it would not establish the data connection.

mine doesn't do that, I have a data connection almost instantly where I have a signal
the error goes away after a reboot, but the error stalks you, and you never know when it's going to strike..
sometimes when it's in my pocket waiting for a call, while i'm driving with a headset on, at night while i'm asleep
for me, it isn't consistent, but it eventually happens..
I intend on taking it to the repair center for wind next week once I get back home (with the family for the holidays)
I don't think this issue has anything to do with if the NV data was messed with because my husband and I have the same phone purchased the same day 6 months ago. We both get the same error message and it's does not always happen at the same time so I am not sure it has anything to do with the network either. When it happens to him, he tells me it's happening but it does not happen to me. I googled the error because it is annoying. I will guess now that this issue has to do with the Gallaxy s3 and the update to the firmware. I can't wait for a better update.

Hi again
Since I know that there are a lot of people facing the same problem I thought it would be nice to give the solution on this kind of problem.
It seems that when you update via kies (of course on stock roms) something goes wrong. Recently I install the latest rom using odin and except that I found so many new things that I couldn't see before I also had no sim problem again.
So I am pretty sure that this kind of problem appears due to the kies updates. And from what I saw there where more.
If anyone else try the same please let me us know if it worked.
Good luck to u 2.
Btw yes I had that problem when the data signal was almost 0... Maybe 0.... Only then!

First of all I want to ensure you that has nothing to do with the way I unlocked the phone.
Second nv data is untouched.
3rd the problem came on after an update.
As I said after a clear fresh install without ba kups etc, starting from 0 the phone works great again and also there are options settings etc that I couldn't see before. Crazy but real. If anyone else do the same thing and make a fresh install with the latest rom he will agree with that.
So... As you said we make good parties and have nice womens... But how you will caption those moments those special (girls) moments without a nice camera (phone) ?
Have a good day hehe.

For those on the SGH-t999v version of the phone... the reason you are getting this "no sim error" is because of the firmware update to 4.1.1. I've sent my phone in for repairs and the best answer they could give to me was that there's an issue with the current jellybean.. not sure about the SGH-t999 standard versions though...
Unfortunately, I've had to revert back to ice cream ....and guess I have to wait till Lime Pie (OS 5) comes out...
The issue is not the NV data as I have used that method to unlock my phone as well.
Thank you for your replies. I'm relieved to know that it is not the nvdata menu that caused this problem.
I sent my phone in twice now and I've recieved it back for the second time today.
The first time resulted in further Sim card error messages. I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that it does not appear again.
If op would be so kind to lead me to the right direction as to how to use Odin, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Is anyone else having radio issues with their G-pro? AT&T model here and have been having very obnoxious issues with this device. I'm familiar with the common issues of losing 3g or 4g data while in buildings and such and have always had issues with my phones while in buildings but this phone is by far the worst so far. I'm not sure if it is only a network issue or this specific phone but I can barely get it to send and receive sms inside my house. MMS, forget about it. Calls get dropped immediately when I try to make them at home, etc... Last night I was driving home and on a phone call. Over the course of the 3 hour drive I got dropped at least a dozen times. I've never had these issues with a phone. Any suggestions? Should I try to get a warranty replacement or is this normal?
Could it be your SIM card? I have only had my phone for a week and haven't had problems getting a signal. However, on my old Galaxy Note, I had a similar issue and the SIM was to blame. Have you tried turning your phone off, taking out the SIM and reinserting it to make sure it's in there fully? You could also try cleaning the contacts (the gold part on the back of the SIM).
BTW...was reading your signature and had to LOL at the part about the Nokia Lumia. I tried a Lumia and only made it a month before Android withdrawals set in--so I sold it to help pay for my OG Pro.
Haha, yeah. I liked a lot about the Windows phone but just couldn't stick with it. I'm Android through and through!!!
I'll give that a shot or maybe get into the store and get a new SIM card today. Thanks for the suggestion!
Anyone....anyone...? Bueller....Bueller...?
Swapped the SIM and didn't fix anything. Wondering if it is an issue with the phone itself.
