What do you mean by fast charger? also what tablet -
On my tab pro 8.4 when hooked to the stock 2A charger it will charge close to 2A (1870mA) , I haven't tried hooking it up to anything higher but I suspect its limited by the circuitry.
But generally charging at faster rates will shorten the life of the battery as it causes more heat and the battery can wear out faster, you should generally stick the the charging adapter provided with the device for best results.

I did it once. Is that bad?

Since the internal electricity limits the current, it doesn't do harm when the current exceeds the limit.

As long as the charger matches the tablet / phone voltage then it should be ok, so plugging in a 5V 3A charger won't hurt it in the short term.
Sometimes the cable matters too (depending on the charger), if the wall charger doesn't support fast charging natively (using internal shorted data pins), then the data pins in a usb cable might need to be shorted to tell the phone to charge using AC mode, this is known as a "charging cable" and will only work with that function (once modified you can't use it for data transfers), you can also purchase charging cables, Though nearly all modern wall chargers now short the pins for you so you don't need the special cable.
On Samsung devices you can see if its charging under AC or USB mode by going to Settings -> General -> Battery and see if it says Charging (AC) or Charging (USB).,
USB is limited to 500 mA , or perhaps 900 mA on usb 3.0 (might need kernel support, and usb 3.0), AC mode should draw as much power as the internal circuitry or the charger can allow .

Quick Charging USB Adapter... Any thoughts?

I am considering buying this usb charging adapter cable to help speed up my charging rate at work where I don't have an AC adapter and my work computer's usb ports are conveniently placed. From what I have read, normal usb charging maxes out at 500ma, but can be increased if your usb port has more juice if you short the data wires, which will tell the phone to grab more power because it thinks it is plugged into an AC adapter.

it is meant for a galaxy tab, but From what I see is that it has a switch that either allows data / slow charge or allows quick charging. I have purchased a few of these already because I'm assuming it will still work with my galaxy s2.

yes, charging via USB port sucks, it's too slow at 500 mAh
if that does the magic trick, by shorting it and making it believe it's an AC then it'll be nice, and it can pull around 1000 mAh off the USB port (depending on your computer mainboard)
Id be curious to see if this actually works but i see no fault in trying it

Only the Galaxy Tablets have this limitation (they cannot be charged at all via computer usb only via their "special" wall adapter) so the adapter won't do anything for a phone. The adapter works on the tablet because what the adapter is doing is shorting 2 pins on the USB cable to fool the TABLET into thinking it is on the AC adapter "specially made" for it.
As long as you plug the phone it into a self-powered usb port (ie: a hub with a power brick) you will get max current the phone allows. The adapter will make no difference on the phone because the phone CAN charge off the PC port while the tablet cannot. It won't hurt the phone but it won't help it either.

Thanks for the info on the galaxy tab, however I disagree with you in your opinion that an adapter that shorts the data wires will not help the phone to charge quicker.
It seems either the devices or android system itself limits charging to 500ma so it does not damage the computer, the phone itself knows that it is connected via usb, and will state "Charging: USB Plugged"
If you let the phone think it is connected to an AC adapter, it will allow the battery to accept whatever amperage you throw at it, and you will see that the system states "Charging: AC Plugged"

I have found that using the Galaxy Tab chargers works the same way. They have a 2amp output vs the .5 amps that most blackberry chargers and USB use... It shortens the charge time significantly.

I need advise for the following:
Charger A (Li-polymer battery) output : 5V, 1A
Charger B (Li-polymer battery) output : 5V, 500mA
Device input: 5V, 750mAH (Li-ion / Li-polymer)
When using Charger A, some people comment that it will limit the current of 750mAH for the device and the device's battery should be fine since both the charger and device are at 5V. However, some people comment that this will shorten the battery life of the device since it will perform a 'quick charge' using 1A.
When using Charger B, some people comment that the device will draw more current than it can deliver and causes it to heat up and reduces the charger's life. However, some people comment that Charger B will extend the battery life of the device since it performs a 'slow charge'.
I also read that USB pins on the charger denotes if the charger is a PC or a dedicated charger. If it is a PC, the device will limit the drawing current. If it is a dedicated charger, the device will draw more current to charge itself.
I am confused as to who is right and which charger should i be using.

[Q] How do I know whether fast charge is safe on a certain voltage?

So I got one of those cheap car chargers for phones recently and I realized that plugging it in with fast charged enabled would help me keep the charge up while GPS is draining away. My question is though, how do I know whether or not it is safe to? I really don't want to shorten the life of my battery or damage any components permanently.
The specs of the charger are as follows:
Input: DC 12v-24v
Output: DC 5.0v +/- 5%
Max: 1000mA
Fast charge only applies when it is connected to a computer.
That charger is perfectly fine in terms of the rated output you list. Dont worry, 1A is fine. As long as it its not so cheap that it fry's for some other reason lol.

Fast charge works when it shows charging as USB, there are plenty of cheap car chargers that don't charge as AC and thus would benefit from fast charging

Car chargers don't connect as data transfer.
Fast charge turns off data transfer and makes the phone think the laptop is AC.
USB charging will only show (should only show) when it is connected in data mode. (Mtp)

If the cable has the data connectors it will charge as USB I have multiple off brand car chargers that do NOT charge as AC
My car charger appears as AC because its a 1.2 amp charger so gives the full 1 amp output. I believe usb is detected only when connected at 0.5 amp which is why many car chargers show as usb. At least this is how the n1 works. It detects either 500 or 100 mA for either usb or ac.

Highest Charging Current for One X

Hi all:
I just did a test on the maximum charging current of the One X using current measurement equipment, and it shows that the One X does not draw above 460mA of current while charging.
With this value, i suspect that the One X limits max charging current at 500mA, which means 3 things:
1) Using any previous generation USB charger (750mA or 850mA or 1A) is good enough. Attempting to use the iPad's charger (rated at 2A) WILL NOT get you faster charging time.
2) When using battery draining applications, the charging current may not be enough for you to both CHARGE and USE the Phone. Thus it might be a better idea to give your One X some dedicated charging time.
3) Some computer USB ports may specify 500mA of output current, but there are many times the available current is less than that. On my USB port, the charging current is only about 300mA at times. So it is better to use a dedicated charger if you have it available. Having that said, however, it is still ok to charge the One X with a USB port at 300mA, just that charging will take longer.
That's all I have to report. Useful information for all.

I've had mine charge at 780mAh+ before. 1amp HTC charger. Charge rate slows down at the last 20-30% or so. So from 70%-100% battery, charge rates normally slow to about 450mAh.

i tried to use the charger for htc chacha and hd2..
both does not work.. red light will light up but after a while it will go off and the phone does not charge..
Charging my HOX while the phones working hard eventually (after say, 5 mins), causes the charge LED to flash green/red. I've had this twice now, once while playing a 720P HD film, and once when playing Glowball.
Both times the phone was very hot, so i'm not sure if the LED thing was to indicate that the battery was too hot to charge, or that the charger could not supply enough power to charge and power the phone at the same time.

I'm using my HD2 charger at work every day. It charges at about 400/500mA.
Original charger gives me 650/750mA (lowers at the end)

If the charger cannot cope with the discharge from the game, a pop up message actually appears. If it's blinking means it's too hot. Try not to do anything intensive the last 20-30% remaining (meaning at 70-100% battery).

Same here... I am using the Atrix 4G (US) charger, it does not charge the phone. The charger gives output of 850mA. It does charge when plugged into the laptop, but I think it will take very long that way.

after a while (I did it when battery had charged to 20%), I could connect the Moto US charger, and it would show as "AC". It would not want to charge through it when the battery was really low (2%), but it would charge via USB in that case. Weird behavior, IMO.
USB limited to 500. AC limited to 1A.

If you want maximum speed of charging (AC charging) you need:
1A charger with shorted D+ and D- pins (eg, original HTC charger).
iPad charger probably doesn't have these pins shorted, so in this case phone will see it as USB charging (you can check it in settings->battery) and will limit charging current to 500mA. Also lot of aftermarket car chargers will work only in USB mode despite they are able to supply 1A.

Can you post a potential list of car charger which are working at 1mA according to you?
I've only tested few devices:
Extrememac external battery for iPhone/iPad (max 2A) had pins not shorted - USB charging mode on One X (500mA).
Some cheap car adapters - max 1A (according to spec) - USB charging mode on One X.
To fox this problem you should prepare a USB extension cable or micro-usb cable with shorted D+ and D- pins and it should be recognized as AC adapter. I think that also some old HTC phone chargers might come with shorted pins in cable already, but don't know which...

Yes, that one will charge at the full rate.
There is no list of known good chargers - it's down to luck or a recommendation from someone who found one. You can be sure that any charger advertised as "iPhone, iPad or iPod" compatible will NOT charge your One X at the full rate.
I found one recently in a local petrol station shop. It was £5. I took it apart to have a look and the D+ and D- pins are correctly connected together (via a low value resistor) so it charges at the full rate.
So, I might suggest you look for the cheapest Chinese car charger you can.

Bingo. I also noticed that when I have the screen on at 100% brightness, GPS and Bluetooth on, i.e. in the car, the USB charger cannot even keep up with the battery drain.
On top of that, the battery gets really hot.
I did not have any of these issues with my SGS2, and frankly, I think it's very disappointing. One should at least be able to stay on the same battery level while doing nothing too fancy and on USB inside a car.

There are a lot of factors in the charging current. When you charge, the battery will heat up during the process, especially towards the end of the charging cycle. If you are using your phone at the same time and cause even more heat and charging may slow down to prevent overheating. Also, as mentioned prior, charging slows down as capacity is reached. 100% brightness, GPS, and Bluetooth all on has always walked the fine line of just barely keeping up on my past phones on a 500 mA USB charger. On top of that, this phone is a lot more powerful than an SGS2 and the T3 and big screen produce more heat which may be slowing your charging more.
The problem is a lot of cheap chargers that the phone thinks are USB chargers, not AC chargers, thus causing them to only charge at 500 mA. If you have a proper charger, or a properly modified charger, you should get more like 1A, assuming conditions are right.
In the past I've used Battery Monitor Widget from the Play store to show my charging current on a widget, as well as track and graph battery use, charging current, temperature, etc. Might want to give it a try if you're more interested in charging details.
Im using my htc desire charger and cable (the one that splits in two). It works fine for me but it does take a while to get a full charge. Should i use the charger and cable that came with the phone?

and battery capacity is 1750 mAh , so in theory , it should be 100% charged in 1750 mAh / 1000 mA = 1.75 hours.
but consider something like cable resistance or whatever , i think it should be fully charged like 2.5 hours or so ...
but what strange is, i have an old wall charger which was come from with Nexus S , only has 700 mA output and the new one came with Galaxy Nexus which has 1 A output. but my application , DX power booster , charge estimated time shows exact same with both 700 mA and 1 A ... i just don't get it as they have different output current ...
and i think , when charger is plug in, phones runs on power source directly from charger which will decrease the current goes to battery i think , so will the battery charging be short if i shut down my phone when it charges ?
and as for a USB , 5 V and 0.5 mA , which is only half of wall charger , then why does FAST CHARGE will make it as shortly as wall charger ?
because i think , no matter it is on or off , it doesn't alternate the fact that USB still only has 500 mA output ...

My Gnex charges WAY faster when it's turned off. A few times I've left the house and realized I forgot to charge my phone overnight so I turn it off, put it on the car charger and usually have a useable charge even if it's a fairly short trip.
If you're phone is off, it's not using the power it's getting from the charger, therefore it will reach 100% faster

wall charging is only faster because your phone is not using battery while charging, so of course it would take a shorter time to reach full battery, thus appearing to charge 'faster'.
Fast charge is fooling the phone into thinking your charging from a wall socket instead of a usb, as when in usb mode it uses some of the power to transfer files between the phone and computer, so when in fast charge mode it only charges and cant be used to transfer files. this is from what i understand so far

When you activate Fast charge you fool the USB port to think it doesn't have a communication device attached, and thus can deliver up to 1.5A on the port (dependent on port type). The phone charges faster when turned off because it doesnt use any power itself. The charging board on the phone will always control how much current you can recieve at all times (even when off).

A friend has me a bit confused saying this could damage the charging mechanisms of the phone.

Do u mean, you are giving the Galaxy Note an input of 5V, 2.1A (ie, output of Portable Charger)? if so, it is going to effect the battery life in long run..it may charge your phone faster, but definitely going to hurt the life of the battery..there are a lot of factors which should be considered like how much extra current you can give, temperature etc etc..

The Note will draw only ~700mA on an "AC" charger, even if that charger can supply up to 1A, 2A, etc.
On USB, it will draw ~500mA.
A mains/AC charger shorts the 2 data pins, which tells the phone that it's a dumb charger, not a USB host, and it is safe for the device to draw up to its own maximum (700mA for the Note).

Of course, 700mA is more than the 500mA it will draw from a USB host, so if you were really concerned, you could use that.
But the device ships with a mains/AC charger from which it will draw 700mA, so you're never going to exceed the "official" charger, whatever charging source you use.

yes, though AFAIK the Note will draw more than 700mA from the OEM charger
and I have noticed charging speed differences by using different aftermarket chargers... never put a multimeter to them though
while charging the battery in the note is safe, I don't recommend plugging in your portable charger into a external battery charger. They may not protect the battery from overcurrent. Pay attention to all the specifications of all charging devices you use. Especially if you also have an aftermarket battery.

I have used many, many USB chargers: mains/AC, 12V, solar, portable battery, and never seen greater than ~700mA being drawn by the Note.
I'd like to know otherwise, for the odd occasion when i might want a really quick charge!
My friends point was that the i-sound charger would hurt not so much the battery but might damage the charging circuitry in the phone...course I learn this after buying this charger! ( I know its fine for nexus 7 and 10.1 tab).

Yup, and I believe the answer is no: you cannot damage the Note's charging circuit by using a charger that has a higher *maximum* current, since the Note will only draw a current of (approx) 700mA regardless of the charger's maximum.
As an example of that, my test showing that the Note still only draws 725mA when connect to the Nexus 7 charger, which has a maximum charging current of 2A.

There was a mid on this site a really long time ago showing how shorting a specific connection in the usb cable will enable ac mode and this is supposedly what the oem charger does

yup, that's right: shorting the two data pins --- which most "dumb-charger spec" capable chargers do --- tells the Note that it's OK to pull its maximum ~700mA. But it won't pull any more than that even if it's a 2A charger.
Without that short, the Note will only pull the regular ~500mA (again, regardless of charger max current): it thinks it is connected to a standard USB host, which might not be able to supply > 500mA, e.g. a laptop motherboard.
If you have a >500mA charger that *doesn't* follow the dumb-charger spec, i.e. it doesn't short the data pins, e.g. possibly a Mac USB charger, then you can get a charge-only no-data USB cable, that has the data pins shorted internally (in the cable itself), which will achieve the same effect. This is the mod you describe above.
You probably should not use that cable with a regular USB host (although the host will probably just limit its current anyway).
[Macs use some proprietary "signalling" method, whereby differing value resistors are placed across the data pins, telling the device differing levels of current to pull, etc. This is why you'll see external battery packs like Anker Astro 3 having a "Samsung port" and also a "iPad port"; madness]
Finally, some Android kernels have a hack that will allow AC mode (e.g. 700mA on the Note) regardless of the data pins. But this isn't always wise, and so many devs won't touch it. It prob wouldn't bother the Note, but it might not be good for the host/charger.
Apologies for rambling on, but people seem to ask this sort of thing a lot...

I believe that's correct; I would not hesitate to use it.
As someone else stated, however: whilst charging in the phone should be safe, since the phone controls the current, taking the battery out and charging it in a standalone battery charger may not be safe.

Yes, that's correct. Generally, just make sure the voltage is not too high (or too low). The range of 4.7V to 5V should be OK, since there is some allowance for variations. The current ( ie, the Amperes) only indicates the current the charger is capable of supplying. It doesn't mean the charger will force all that current down the battery's throat. The device/battery will draw as much as it needs, and this will not damage the device or battery whether it's 0.5A or 2A.
