This is my first HTC phone, so I'm just wondering, what is S-OFF or S-ON? And why is it in place?

its a extra security measure HTC phones have. the biggest issue with s-on is flashing kernels. with s-on you have to manually flash them using fastboot commands. With s-off you can do other things like flash firmware from other regions or run RRU's from other countrys as well, it would help with sim unlock and changing your model id.

I had to flash the stock boot.img since I was using a custom kernel to disable write protection.

I want my S-ON mobile to S-OFF.
Please help me.
Thank you.
If you want S-OFF then use XTC-Clip
If you want to unlock your bootloader,go to HTCDev.com
Man, i tried this. But it doesn't work. I give some error.. (190,140). I tried zergRush i give 'perminission denied'.
If You have GSM phone, then forget it (unless You have XTC Clip). Official support guy told me they don't provide S-OFF solution because technitians don't want for us to lose warranty. He also said that all solutions on S-OFF can be found on this forum. So good luck.

To unlock your bootloader you need to visit HTCDEV.com register (its free), and then follow the instructions to unlocking you boot loader by choosing the HTC Wildfire S. it is very siple.
If you need to get the files that it will suggest at some point you can find them on this post.

Not to my knowledge. I have been trying to install custom ROM with S-ON for 6 months now. I'm just here checking to see if there were any new developements an noticed your post.
with an unlocked boot loader it is possible to root de wildfire S, but I have not been able to install custom ROM. The main reason is that it is not possible to access keyareas in de operating system. So far I know without S-off you can only flash a new boot.img and a new system img.
It is best to unlock the bootloader and flash a pre-rooted system.img.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664533
At least this way you can use Link2SD so that the 150Mb internal storage in no longer an issue and you have root access so al other fun rooted phone stuff is available to you. You just cannot flash custom roms unfotunately...
I'm going to start with an apology if my searching skills aren't that great, but I've searched all around and find nothing.. ok..question...
Can someone name some benefits a user can gain by getting s-off on this device...? I thought unlocked and rooted was enough to flash roms....now I have to get s-off??
Thanks in advance...

Edit: You don't need S-Off to flash custom roms/kernels/recoveriers - it's for people that want to tinker at a deeper level.
From what I remember from my DNA days, S-Off removes the security flag on HTC devices and allows you to flash a different h-boot, change the CID - which allows you to flash firmware from different carriers (BE CAREFUL DOING THIS), and remove the "unlocked/tampered" text from the fastboot menu.
Also, check out the 2nd half of the article in this link: http://www.pocketables.com/2013/04/why-you-want-root-and-s-off-on-htc-devices.html
Again, be careful with S-Off. If you ever go back to S-On and have the wrong h-boot or firmware installed I believe it will brick the device.

Well that's new to me. If the developer of the ROM says to have your phone S-OFF then definitely go with their instructions. I haven't seen the S-OFF method on the forums here, but I'm sure a google search will get you to the needed file(s) and instructions. If I remember correctly, actually achieving S-OFF wasn't too complicated/dangerous as long as you're comfortable using adb/fastboot - it's just what you can do to your phone once you've achieved S-OFF that can be dangerous.

If you fully convert to gpe I think you need s-off because you use the ruu. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can just flash the gpe ROM instead of fully converting the phone.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask...what's the benefit of a full gpe conversion? Does it run faster...Will it update if the HTC gpe edition gets updated and will I have trouble with the T-Mobile bands? Thank you so much
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
That's exactly why most people do the ruu conversion, when there's an ota they will get the update too as long as you keep the stock Google recovery. Although on my m7 I was able to get ota with twrp. On m7 I kept Google radio and had no problems with T-Mobile. I think it should be the same for m8 since on the play store it says the phone supports T-Mobile. Just go check out the thread for the conversion if you need help.

You should try firewater. If it doesn't work for you then you are out of luck. Either pay the $25 once and then flash whatever you like, or you will just wait for the official OTA
