HELP! S3 won't turn on, need files from internal storage - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have no idea what's wrong with my phone. In the past, it would randomly shut off and wouldn't turn back on using the power button. I would have to take the battery out, plug it into the charger so the red LED came on, put the battery back in, and smack it a few times before it vibrated and powered on. There's nothing wrong with the power button, because I've had to power down/restart before using it and it always worked, and as long as I shut it off myself instead of it turning itself off randomly, the power button always worked.
Anyway... my little "trick" to turn it back on stopped working the other day. I have pictures, voice recordings and contacts that I need to get off of this phone. I've tried my "trick", I've tried leaving the battery out overnight, I've tried putting another S3 battery in, I've tried plugging it into my PC... nothing is working. I'm not super techy, and I've never downloaded anything to modify it from the stock version. I have no idea what happened to this stupid thing.
I looked up something about a jig, and forcing it into download mode, but I wasn't able to find out if that would allow me to access the files in the internal storage (I don't use an SD card) or if it'll wipe everything out. Does anyone have any idea on what I can do???

they do make a usb stick that is double-ended. one end will fit in a samsung device and the other is regular,i.e. plugs into a computer. if all else fails you might try that to at least retrieve your stuff.

Are you able to get into download mode? If you are, you may be able to flash TWRP and possibly mount the internal storage as a USB drive. I've done this on my Nexus 4 and my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet.

I've tried plugging it into my computer with the USB and nothing happens. The only time my phone shows signs of life is when I take the battery out, plug it into the charger, and the red LED comes on--the screen stays completely black, no noise, no vibrations. Nothing. My computer doesn't recognize my phone unless it's turned on

Unfortunately no, which is why I was thinking about purchasing whatever this "jig" is off eBay to force it into download mode. I'm hoping if there's something on the screen my computer will recognize it and let me access the internal memory how I usually do when I'd transfer pictures/files. I've tried all of the button tricks for download and recovery mode and my phone won't respond at all.

if it comes down to having to use jtag, this may help.

although the jig is prob. a lot cheaper.

1) Download debrick256.img web address: androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358551786
2) Use Win32DiskImager program to flash a sdcard (card can be 16GB or 32GB), then insert sdcard into phone
IF you have a ROM already installed, boot phone an skip to step 5
IF you have a CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLED skip to step 5
3) Boot into download mode ( I am sure you are now a VERY VERY HAPPY PERSON NOW )
4) ODIN/flash a custom recovery

My phone won't go into download mode. The "jig" I ordered arrived today and that won't even force it into download mode. I just want to get my phone to the point where I can plug it into my computer and pull my files off of it. Nothing seems to be working. I followed your first few steps anyway, thinking maybe with the SD card it would allow it to go into download mode, but that didn't work.

Chances are you've already gotten an answer, but I need to get my 10 noob posts so here goes.
Always start with a good backup. At least apps you want to get back. Backups usually are stored online or somewhere the ROMwipe can't get to it so just run the backup however you want.
If you don't have CWM flashed already, do so.
Connect your phone to your computer and enable USB transfer mode.
Make sure you have the USB driver for your phone installed on your computer.
Access your phone's primary SD card (usually the first one that shows up in My Computer).
Move the rebelrom .zip file directly onto that drive (the root) without extracting it or renaming it.
Properly deactivate USB mode and disconnect from computer.
Restart the phone in CWM recovery mode (hold the volume up and power key to turn on, then continue holding volume up until the splash screen comes up).
Start with "ROMwipe". Don't worry, your backup will be fine, and you will remain in recovery the whole time.
"Install .zip from SD card" next.
See where I'm going with this?

t989 bricked but can detect in Linux

Dear friends,
I have a bricked t989. Screen wont start. I thin the phone ran out of space when I was trying to flash a ROM (silly me).
Here is what happens when I connect the phone to:
Windows7/XP laptop:
It start asking me to format the USB drive. Phone is not detected in Samsung Kies. It shows as a USB device ni system tray. IN computer management, a lots of drives appear and all seem to be healthy. The icons disappear when I hold the power button and come back when I press power button again. So it tells me the on and off is occuring, but nothing occurs on screen.
Linux PC:
I can see all the drives with all the contents. Including all my files, apps, system folders, etc. I see folders like image lib etc. And its writable too.
IS there any way I can flash a stock rom or something by copying some files to these folders or anyway I can use what I can see in Linux to put life back into my phone?
Many thanks for reading.
Have you tried getting into download mode and flashing a stock rom with Odin?

If u can see everything like that then ur not bricked, u need to put he phone in download mode by turning it off and holding vol-vol+ and connecting to PC, a screen should show and give u option to continue or cancel, press continue, now connect to windows via Odin, Samsung kies will not see the phone because u have a custom recovery, make sure kies isn't running/uninstall it if u can, open Odin v1.85 and wait till it says added, from there flash twrp v2.6.1.0 tar.file from here techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules load the file via PDA option and press start in Odin, do not touch anything else besides PDA to load the file and start to initiate the flash, when its done and u get a green passed sign, DL ur fav ROM to ur PC, boot to recovery on the phone and select advanced/mount USB, transfer the file, flash the ROM (and gapps if needed) and reboot, phone should recover fine..

I have this same problem, but can't get mine to work.
While back, I flash and play around with lots of roms. One day my t989 went dead, after flashing, can't remember the detail. Anyway, so now, when I plug in the usb cable, the computer dings and a message pops up saying I need to format the disk drive before I can use it. Options are "Format disk" or "Cancel". I can't format, it keeps saying to check the disk and make sure it is connected properly and try again. Only option is Cancel. Odin can't see it either. Kies can't see it. Also, Kies is uninstalled and PC is rebooted. Still no luck.
What else can I try?

First of all u never never format a phone from a PC like that, the device has certain partitions that hold crucial info such as imei, sys data, recovery info, and formating wipes all of that so that's a no no, second if by chance u flashed the wrong ROM or a wrong anything bad things happen, the fact that it even asks u to format the disk tells me something is wrong, try holding vol-vol+ while connecting phone to PC when the phone is off, if its recoverable it will enter download mode, if that doesn't work u can try a USB jig, which will force the device into DL mode and at most there a couple dollars on eBay or amazon, so its worth it to fix the phone, if neither of those options work then congrats man u have officially hard bricked ur device, frame it an mount it on the wall lol

[Q] Deleted my OS... HELP!!!

Ok so first, let me say I know I done goofed. What happened was my phone (Note 2 GT-N7100) started to choke up a lot, battery life was ridiculously low and then suddenly my phone's language was constantly being switched to Italian.
I thought it might be a virus but a scan couldn't find anything. I deleted almost all apps in hopes it would stop but the phone went on with these weird glitches. In an act of desperation, I decided to wipe out everything and go back to factory settings.
Thing is my phone is rooted and I had the X Note Rom installed. When I tried the factory reset on TWRP, it still went back to the X Note Rom. That's when I dun goofed. I deleted EVERY ****ING THING in a desperate and stupid move.
Now when I press Volume Up + Home + Power I can get to Recovery Mode but I ain't got **** to install. If I press Volume Down + Home + Power I get into Odin mode but get a "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" message that just hangs there forever.
To top it off, my computer won't recognize the damn phone anymore. Am I ****ed? Can I get myself out of this mess?! Please HELP!!!
Take it easy, download a custom rom, transfer it to the SD card, enter recovery and Flash it.
Since you can't connect the phone via USB, you need a SD card reader (if you have a laptop you 100% have it)
OR
You could flash the stock ROM through Odin, but it's more risky in my opinion. I would go with the 1st method

Can’t access to Download Mode or Recovery Mode after bricking AT&T Galaxy S3 i744 4.3
Hi I have (had) a AT&T galaxy S3 i747 with android 4.1.1

Because the phone is in another country I couldn’t update it by OTA to android 4.3
So I started to read forums that said how to Update AT&T S3 i747 to android 4.3 (I747UCUEMJB)
The S3 was not Root
I installed all the phone drivers in the computer
This is what I did: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52341582&postcount=38)
- Use Odin 3.07
- Check Auto Reboot and Re-Partition, and uncheck all the boxes
- I put my phone in USB debugging in the developer options
- I turned it off
- Started to put the phone on Download Mode pressing volume DW+home+power button at the same time
- In Odin on the PDA box I checked and loaded the file .tar.md5 (I747UCUEMJB_2024954_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5 )
- Pressed the button Start
The installation seemed to go right, the program never showed anything weird.
When the Programs finished the installation the phone turned off and then turned on and show the logo of android (seemed to be lying down or inclined) and after that it turned off.
The computer showed that something was connected (QHSUSB_DLOAD) but couldn’t install any driver, so I disconnected it of the computer.
I couldn’t turn on the phone :crying:, I took the battery out and put it in and tried to start the phone and nothing happened, I tried pressing any button to access to recovery o download mode and none of this worked.
I started to search forums that talk about restart or turn on a brick AT&T S3 i747
I found one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068) that said to download a image (debrick-SGH-I747U-CUEMJB3.img) and using the program “Win32DiskImager” to put the image inside of a micro SD to make the phone turn on,
I put the micro SD inside the phone and when I pushed the power button for almost 3 seconds it Turned on , the phone seems to be fine an it has android 4.3 (I747UCUEMJB) installed.
I can use it normally so far.
But the problem is that I can’t turn on the phone if the micro SD card is not inserted on the phone.
Without the micro SD inside don’t show any sign of life
When the micro SD is inside I can turn on the phone and use its apps.
I have tried to enter to Recovery mode or Download mode with the micro SD inside but the phone only show what its supposed to happen for 1 second then turns off and then turns on by its own (after that I can use it normally)
Does anyone know how can I Fix my phone ?
How can I boot my phone without using the micro SD card?
How can I access to download mode?
And if I could access to download mode what should I do next ?
The only files I have now are:

It's been a while sorry about beinging away.
A guy who says that have a JTAG service tried and coudn't recover it. So I left it there because it have a broken display and a broken firmware and it' is from outside Brazil and after the FIFA CUP Anatel will lock operation of devices that models are not sold on Brazil and I747 is probably included on the list.
So i gave up from my phone and bought a Nexus 5.
The case is closed!

Hi I have (had) a AT&T galaxy S3 i747 with android 4.1.1 View attachment 2790321
- I turned it off
- Started to put the phone on Download Mode pressing volume DW+home+power button at the same time View attachment 2790322 View attachment 2790323
- In Odin on the PDA box I checked and loaded the file .tar.md5 (I747UCUEMJB_2024954_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5 )
- Pressed the button Start View attachment 2790324
The installation seemed to go right, the program never showed anything weird. View attachment 2790325
I started to search forums that talk about restart or turn on a brick AT&T S3 i747
I found one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068) that said to download a image (debrick-SGH-I747U-CUEMJB3.img) and using the program “Win32DiskImager” to put the image inside of a micro SD to make the phone turn on,
I put the micro SD inside the phone and when I pushed the power button for almost 3 seconds it Turned on , the phone seems to be fine an it has android 4.3 (I747UCUEMJB) installed.View attachment 2790326

Here's what you can do to get the device back to working and booting normally. If the Odin flash failed first time, you should not use this flash again. Instead you should use custom recovery to flash a complete 4.3 stock restore image.
1) Download the stock restore image from the following thread. I always prefer to use TWRP and thus, the TWRP image, because of the easier user interface.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Save the file to a location on your computer.
2) Download the Odin flashable TWRP Tar file for custom recovery from the link below ....
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-d2att.tar
With the debrick card in your phone, boot to system as you have been doing. Connect your phone to your computer with a good quality micro USB cable and copy the stock restore image you downloaded earlier to your phone. Be sure you remember the stored location.
3) Power off your phone and, with the debrick card, boot to download mode. If you cannot use the Volume Down, Power and Home button combo to boot to download mode, you may need to get a USB jig.
4) Once you are in download mode, connect your phone to the PC, open Odin v3.07. Make sure Odin recognizes your phone. Do not check or uncheck any boxes but leave the defaults as is. In the PDA box, load the TWRP Tar file you downloaded earlier. Click on Start and wait for flashing to complete. When you get to Pass, disconnect your phone from the PC and pull out the battery to stop it trying to reboot.
5) Replace the battery and with the debrick card inside, boot to Recovery mode by pressing the Volume Up, Power and Home buttons. If you do this right, you should be able to get to recovery mode.
6) Select Install and navigate to the stock restore zip file you saved to your phone earlier. Select this zip and swipe to confirm install. Wait for firmware installation (flashing) to complete.
7) Clear your cache/dalvikand reboot to system.
Try booting without the card. If the above process went as described, your phone should be booting normally. Good luck!

Okay. At least, we are almost there. Try booting into recovery mode and doing a hard wipe/reset. If this doesn't work, then you could try reinstalling the 4.3 stock firmware. You may need to reflash custom recovery as the initial flashing would have returned you to stock recovery. If you have to do the firmware flashing again, please make sure you clear your cache/dalvik before rebooting to system.
happy to see this thread resolved, this is what XDA is all about, no matter how fd up something sounds, a community like xda will find a fix for it even if it takes months
And the award of the Q/A thread goes to Larry and everyone in this post for trying and failing but succeeding at the end
anywayz happy rooting and be careful, no-one wants to end with a brick cheers and keep this place awsome

Did you try getting into download mode with the 3-button combo (Volume Down/Power/Home)?

Note 2 - Formatting via PC?

Long story short- I dropped my phone and the screen does not turn on anymore. I would like to sell it as damaged.
BUT before I do, I would like to format the phone via PC.
The phone still detects on the PC and if i right click the device via PC and press "Format" will the phone still be functional? Or will it wipe the entire phone including the OS? making it in a worst state than it is in?

I believe you can use adb to format, or if nothing else, just use odin to take it back to stock

What is adb?
Odin will be difficult as I'm unable to see the screen to follow prompts of going to download mode. I tried holding the buttons and then trying to do a factory reset but it seems I'm always doing it wrong.

If you plug the phone in just delete like all the pics and all the folders but leave the android file all the others should delete if not just delete what you can then download a stock firmware anf flash it via odin while the phone is in download mode and everything should be gone or you can look at pics on the recovery and just wipe the phone without the screen on

It appears my odin has been successful.
However, upon looking at my files via PC. My music, photos etc are still there. Shouldn't this be deleted?

No That is pretty much just doing a factory reset just wait till the phone boots and go on the pc and just delete the music pics or like I said go look at pic on what recovery you have and manually format them if you can get philz recovery on there I can post pics and you can see where everything is
Also, for future reference, it's easy to get into download mode even if you can't see the screen. Power off (or remove battery), and then hold volume down, home, and power. This will take you directly to download mode. After a couple of minutes (once you're pretty confident you made it into download mode, press volume up once to accept the custom OS prompt. Once you've done that you should see your device on Odin (the Com port will light up).
While you're in download mode, you can also issue certain fastboot commands (on most devices) if you need to... ie fastboot reboot or fastboot reboot recovery or fastboot reboot bootloader. Fastboot flash... etc. This can be extremely handy when you can't access the touchscreen or can't make accurate selections for whatever reason. It can help you get into certain modes you may need to get to so you can use other tools to repair your device or pull files.
Edited to add: changing out the display assembly is super easy to do. If you decide not to sell it, that is.
