t989 bricked but can detect in Linux - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Dear friends,
I have a bricked t989. Screen wont start. I thin the phone ran out of space when I was trying to flash a ROM (silly me).
Here is what happens when I connect the phone to:
Windows7/XP laptop:
It start asking me to format the USB drive. Phone is not detected in Samsung Kies. It shows as a USB device ni system tray. IN computer management, a lots of drives appear and all seem to be healthy. The icons disappear when I hold the power button and come back when I press power button again. So it tells me the on and off is occuring, but nothing occurs on screen.
Linux PC:
I can see all the drives with all the contents. Including all my files, apps, system folders, etc. I see folders like image lib etc. And its writable too.
IS there any way I can flash a stock rom or something by copying some files to these folders or anyway I can use what I can see in Linux to put life back into my phone?
Many thanks for reading.

Have you tried getting into download mode and flashing a stock rom with Odin?

If u can see everything like that then ur not bricked, u need to put he phone in download mode by turning it off and holding vol-vol+ and connecting to PC, a screen should show and give u option to continue or cancel, press continue, now connect to windows via Odin, Samsung kies will not see the phone because u have a custom recovery, make sure kies isn't running/uninstall it if u can, open Odin v1.85 and wait till it says added, from there flash twrp v2.6.1.0 tar.file from here techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules load the file via PDA option and press start in Odin, do not touch anything else besides PDA to load the file and start to initiate the flash, when its done and u get a green passed sign, DL ur fav ROM to ur PC, boot to recovery on the phone and select advanced/mount USB, transfer the file, flash the ROM (and gapps if needed) and reboot, phone should recover fine..

I have this same problem, but can't get mine to work.
While back, I flash and play around with lots of roms. One day my t989 went dead, after flashing, can't remember the detail. Anyway, so now, when I plug in the usb cable, the computer dings and a message pops up saying I need to format the disk drive before I can use it. Options are "Format disk" or "Cancel". I can't format, it keeps saying to check the disk and make sure it is connected properly and try again. Only option is Cancel. Odin can't see it either. Kies can't see it. Also, Kies is uninstalled and PC is rebooted. Still no luck.
What else can I try?

First of all u never never format a phone from a PC like that, the device has certain partitions that hold crucial info such as imei, sys data, recovery info, and formating wipes all of that so that's a no no, second if by chance u flashed the wrong ROM or a wrong anything bad things happen, the fact that it even asks u to format the disk tells me something is wrong, try holding vol-vol+ while connecting phone to PC when the phone is off, if its recoverable it will enter download mode, if that doesn't work u can try a USB jig, which will force the device into DL mode and at most there a couple dollars on eBay or amazon, so its worth it to fix the phone, if neither of those options work then congrats man u have officially hard bricked ur device, frame it an mount it on the wall lol

Need urgent help accessing data on my rooted t989 with broken screen

My T989 is rooted. I use it to log my work hours in "It's About Time". I back that app's data up every day to the box folder, and I sync with box. HOWEVER, the box syncing has aparently been pretending to work and doing nothing since february, so I'm screwed right now as the touchscreen on the phone was shattered today. It has no visuals or touch ability. the gorilla glass survived just fine, but the screen behind it is gone.
What I need to know is how can I access the data in the builtin memory. I would love to use Kies, but Kies, points out that my phone is locked (I use a pattern lock) and says I have to unlock it.
Is there someway to remotely unlock a broken phone? The phone can go be a doorstop at this point, but I HAVE to have those backup files sitting in the box folder. They aren't on the microsd card.
So the display is damaged but the digitizer is fine correct? As for data just pull files with adb....I believe you can do that unless you never had USB debugging on

You can always boot into recovery and pull from your data partition using ADB. Then you can restore that to another phone after you install your time tracking app.
I have been in usb debugging. It may be in usb debugging mode right now.
When I connect it, it shows the drive, but they show as empty. Which is the same thing that happens on my GS4G when it's in debugging.
If you could tell me how to go about extracting files, that would be great, assuming there is even a way.
Is the digitizer the touch portion of the touch screen? If so, then no, that's not working. The phone boots, it receives texts, makes other sounds like it's working, but the screen is black. The LCD is cracked, and it will not accept touch input. I have haptic feedback on and it's definitely not letting me attempt to do the unlock screen.

Could you tell me how I do this? The only time I ever booted into recovery was during the rooting process. Do I need to be able to see the screen to do it, or is there a way to get into it remotely? If so, can you either tell me what to do or point me at a tutorial or something? I wouldn't know where to start.

To get into recovery, pull your battery then put it back in, then hold both vol up and vol down and hit the power button.
Type "help" without quotes in ADB to get a list of commands.

try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=628138
It got me out of a jam once on my vibrant, when the same thing happened to me and needed some pictures for my work. USB debuggin has to be on though.
To backup the data from a damaged phone using ADB:
1) Enter Recovery mode:
Turn the phone off, remove the battery. Insert battery, hold volume up AND down while turning on. Plug in usb cable.
2)Open up your terminal/console. Enter the following commands (one command per line, press enter after each)
(this backs up the entire data partition)
Code:
mkdir phoneDataBackup
adb shell mount data
adb pull /data phoneDataBackup
You now have a copy of your phones /data folder, this contains the settings and data from your apps. Get a new phone and then install you app on it. Once you do that simply put the correct named folder from the phoneDataBackup back into your new phones /data folder.
Code:
adb push phoneDataBackup/data/com.rds.itsabouttime /data/data/
This should work just fine for you, I assume you already have ADB installed or can install it first.
THANKS ALL!!!
I am currently using the suggested Android commander to dump everything out of the phone. Lucky the usb debugging got left on when I was cleaning out bloatware last week!!!
Once it's done, or if even if it doesn't work, I'll be playing with the adb connection since it's not like I can break the phone worse... good learning opp!
Thanks for all the tips from everyone.
Quick update, and info in case someone later finds this thread in a search. The android commander did get back what I needed most. However, it also did some strange things. It can see a lot of stuff on the phone, but when pulling things from the phone, for some reason, some files and directories do not come over. I imagine this may have to do with permissions on those items.
I'm basically making thsi note here in case someone finds the thread, thinks they have dumped heir whole phone... just make sure you pick through the important directories before you think you've got everything and discard the phone.
Thanks again everyone. Ass officially saved.
Hello everyone.
I also just cracked my screen and have neither touch capability nor screen lighting, so I'm effectively blind in controlling my phone.
I know I have Clockworkmod recovery 5.0.2.7 installed and rooted, but these solutions are not working for me.
I have tried removing the batt, reinserting the batt, holding UP+DOWN+POWER until the device vibrates, then let go of the POWER while holding UP+DOWN for another 10 seconds to be sure.
I then plug in the USB cable and my Windows 7 laptop does the "found USB device chime", so I know the device is on (and has not booted into Android, since the Samsung Galaxy logo jungle has not played.)
I also see that Windows 7 sees new "Removable Drives" that it adds after I plug in the device, but the drives cannot be accessed/are not available to Windows 7.
I'm definitely sure I'm in recovery because when I hit POWER, the Windows 7 "unplugged USB device" chime plays, the device vibrates and I'll hear the Galaxy S logo chime, which means I hit the 1st "reboot device" option on the recovery menu.
But when I open a console and type "adb devices" none are listed.
I have also tried Android Commander, and no devices are there either, so these 2 methods do not work. I'm wondering why adb cannot see recovery on mine if people are saying that it can.
I know that Clockworkmod recovery has a option for mounting the sdcard and data via USB. I also see that different versions of Clockworkmod have different menus.
Can someone help me by letting me know what/how many button presses I need to do to get to the "mount sdcard" and "mount data" options once I'm in recovery as I'm flying blind.
Thank you for any help.

If you have adb setup just do adb pulls. You can get anything that way. Slow, but a plan b if nothing else. I would count for you but I run twrp and I don't have time or battery to flash it over to cwm right now.
Edit: for whatever reason tapatalk didn't load anything past the OP...disregard.

Issues with hard reset and Odin

OK guys so this is the issue, I'm trying to reset my buddies Samsung Galaxy S 2 on T-Mobile. He forgot his password and he asked me to help since I'm handy with cell phones. So I tried the easiest thing and tried to do a hard reset. Now I press and hold Volume Up and Down and Press and hold the Power button until I feel it vibrate and let go of the Power button while still holding Volume Up and Down and it will take me to where it says "# Manual Mode #" but when I scroll down and try to select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" I can't select it. I tried pressing the Home button and the Power button to select it and nothing. I tried all the buttons and nothing. I also tried putting in Download Mode to try to reflash the firmware but when I connect it to the computer I don't here it connect and Odin doesn't recognize it not even in the Device Manager. I tried doing the same on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the computer and Odin recognize it just fine. So i'm stumped and need you guys help! Thanks in Advance....
Have you installed the proper USB driver and Kies for the phone on your computer? Make sure you are using the latest Odin.
Also, try flashing a different recovery system such as TWRP once you're able to get Odin working.
As long as you are able to get your phone to connect to Odin, you should be fine. You can even flash a stock ROM through Odin if all else fails.
Good luck!

If you can't get Odin to work, test it on another Galaxy S2 to see if the problem is with the computer. Just a tip.
I have been having the same problem. this t989 i have been working with does not show up on any laptop in the house, and they all have the kies drivers installed. it is "usb device not found." i have been considering wiping the usb storage and sending it straight back to factory settings. but without odin i am going to have to manually flash recovery and all that.. any ideas?? I hooked my phone up to both laptops in the house and it shows up instantly. i am definitely confused. and the worst of it, is ubuntu didnt even recognize the phone.
Do yo have any belkin router software install on your computer. If you have, uninstall it and try.

No luck, installed Kies and didn't recognize phone in Odin. What's weird is that it will not let me factory reset thru the 3 button combo in # manual mode #! I would try a different pc but don't have one atm.
i think i am going to try pointing the phone to googles oem driver
Windows 7
To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the first time:
Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.
Right-click on Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer, and select Manage.
Select Devices in the left pane.
Locate and expand Other device in the right pane.
Right-click the device name (such as Nexus S) and select Update Driver Software. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.
Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
Click Browse and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USB Driver is located in <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\.)
here is something interesting the phone i am working on the usb storage is not mounted on the phone. has anyone seen anything like this before?

Its a cable to join phon with tv or laptop where you can view your phone screen on tv.
I dont think there is any option left for you then. Becoz for alll process you need to see whats on ur screen and u say your screen is all blank.
Sorry man
Find out if your TV support HDMI port...if it does and you are willing to cough up few bucks, get this to connect it

**** !!
so what if i installed a new rom via odin ?
You can install a stock ROM through Odin. Only thing is that the only way you will see it has properly connected in Download mode is throuhg the Com: box in Odin and you probably won't know if it boots up or not.
Couple of things.
Try to get an HDMI cable from a friend or something and use the TV as a monitor.
What recovery are you using? You might be able to get someone to walk you through some screen clicks (that is if your screen even registers the touches) to wipe /data (either through recovery or through Settings>Security>Factory Reset) or even /mounts and pull off through your PC that way.
Best bet is to get an HDMI cable and then once you have your new phone, you'll have all the wonders that the cable provides on a fully functioning phone.
You could always pull the internal SD from ADB and wipe through that avenue as well.
while in recovery on cwm touch, I'm almost positive that volume rockers and power button still react to clicks

thanks alot ,, but could you please tell me where could i find stock Rom for it !! and tell me all steps to do it cause i dont have much info about android
Use odin I guarantee thats the best bet .
Do this pull battery, then put it back in.
Hold home button first then volume down and power at same time for 6seconds after right after 6 seconds release all buttons at once then immediately press vol up for half a second
Now the test to see if its in download mode connect to Odin plug usb into pc if u see "com" in one of the ports you are good to flash the stock tar file in the Pda section only
Remember to follow the steps they are timed as I have tested the time it takes to boot into download mode
First download the following files on your pc in order .Here is the files first is odin which is the tool to flash to stock. Extract it to a desktop folder named odin .Next is the usb drivers download and install and next and last is the actual firmware .tar file to flash in odin And only select pda section then find file and click start when says pass/reset its complete

Note 2 - Formatting via PC?

Long story short- I dropped my phone and the screen does not turn on anymore. I would like to sell it as damaged.
BUT before I do, I would like to format the phone via PC.
The phone still detects on the PC and if i right click the device via PC and press "Format" will the phone still be functional? Or will it wipe the entire phone including the OS? making it in a worst state than it is in?

If you plug the phone in just delete like all the pics and all the folders but leave the android file all the others should delete if not just delete what you can then download a stock firmware anf flash it via odin while the phone is in download mode and everything should be gone or you can look at pics on the recovery and just wipe the phone without the screen on

No That is pretty much just doing a factory reset just wait till the phone boots and go on the pc and just delete the music pics or like I said go look at pic on what recovery you have and manually format them if you can get philz recovery on there I can post pics and you can see where everything is
Also, for future reference, it's easy to get into download mode even if you can't see the screen. Power off (or remove battery), and then hold volume down, home, and power. This will take you directly to download mode. After a couple of minutes (once you're pretty confident you made it into download mode, press volume up once to accept the custom OS prompt. Once you've done that you should see your device on Odin (the Com port will light up).
While you're in download mode, you can also issue certain fastboot commands (on most devices) if you need to... ie fastboot reboot or fastboot reboot recovery or fastboot reboot bootloader. Fastboot flash... etc. This can be extremely handy when you can't access the touchscreen or can't make accurate selections for whatever reason. It can help you get into certain modes you may need to get to so you can use other tools to repair your device or pull files.
Edited to add: changing out the display assembly is super easy to do. If you decide not to sell it, that is.

HELP! S3 won't turn on, need files from internal storage

I have no idea what's wrong with my phone. In the past, it would randomly shut off and wouldn't turn back on using the power button. I would have to take the battery out, plug it into the charger so the red LED came on, put the battery back in, and smack it a few times before it vibrated and powered on. There's nothing wrong with the power button, because I've had to power down/restart before using it and it always worked, and as long as I shut it off myself instead of it turning itself off randomly, the power button always worked.
Anyway... my little "trick" to turn it back on stopped working the other day. I have pictures, voice recordings and contacts that I need to get off of this phone. I've tried my "trick", I've tried leaving the battery out overnight, I've tried putting another S3 battery in, I've tried plugging it into my PC... nothing is working. I'm not super techy, and I've never downloaded anything to modify it from the stock version. I have no idea what happened to this stupid thing.
I looked up something about a jig, and forcing it into download mode, but I wasn't able to find out if that would allow me to access the files in the internal storage (I don't use an SD card) or if it'll wipe everything out. Does anyone have any idea on what I can do???
they do make a usb stick that is double-ended. one end will fit in a samsung device and the other is regular,i.e. plugs into a computer. if all else fails you might try that to at least retrieve your stuff.

Are you able to get into download mode? If you are, you may be able to flash TWRP and possibly mount the internal storage as a USB drive. I've done this on my Nexus 4 and my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet.

I've tried plugging it into my computer with the USB and nothing happens. The only time my phone shows signs of life is when I take the battery out, plug it into the charger, and the red LED comes on--the screen stays completely black, no noise, no vibrations. Nothing. My computer doesn't recognize my phone unless it's turned on

Unfortunately no, which is why I was thinking about purchasing whatever this "jig" is off eBay to force it into download mode. I'm hoping if there's something on the screen my computer will recognize it and let me access the internal memory how I usually do when I'd transfer pictures/files. I've tried all of the button tricks for download and recovery mode and my phone won't respond at all.
if it comes down to having to use jtag, this may help.

although the jig is prob. a lot cheaper.

My phone won't go into download mode. The "jig" I ordered arrived today and that won't even force it into download mode. I just want to get my phone to the point where I can plug it into my computer and pull my files off of it. Nothing seems to be working. I followed your first few steps anyway, thinking maybe with the SD card it would allow it to go into download mode, but that didn't work.
