[Q] KNOX=Warranty Void? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im new to Samsung devices and I have a very simple question.
Does tripping KNOX void my warranty?
The reason I ask this is because everytime I search the forum I see a different answer.

About>Legal>SamsungLegal>Warranty. First Paragraph (g) would state that it does void it, but....
It all depends on the sale rep/tech though.
(h) and (i) are worth reading for the chuckle.

I am getting a new phone because I have a very bad lag issue. Sprint never even rebooted the phone. The only way to see it is tripped is to enter download mode. I would think if you sent your phone to Samsung they would check, not so much with sprint though.

I ran across a thread in t mobiles note forum. A couple of folks got repairs with it tripped. A couple more said they got thier phones back with knox bit reset. Another claimed he works out front and knows that the samsung techs can infact reset it. If true someone should go corleone on one of them.
Edit: here's the link.

Rooted Galaxy Nexus. Repaired NO Warranty problems!! No unroot needed?

So i've been spending a couple of hours over a couples of days trying to unroot en relock my phone.
I had some USB problems and Charging issue's So i wanted to return it in stock..
But Like I said my USB didnt work so I decided to take my losses and just return it, rooted with Superuser installed.
after Explaining my situation the Tech Guy from my Carrier Tells me...
O you have rooted your Phone. Well that might be a problem with the insurance... unless you got a Nexus Device.
I was like what do you mean.
well with all Nexus Devices you are allowed to root your phone...
So i was wondering , who knew about this?
What carrier? This is definitely not the company line from any carrier I know.
Probably just doing so nice customer service. If I was the tech guy id repair it for free since most people always root it anyway. Plus its kind of encouraged anyway.

I was in Sprint yesterday asking them about the newest radio for the JB build (I was having issues with a backup I made and having old radios preventing me from getting the JB OTA update). Anyways, the guy asked why I would need to know about the radios and I played dumb as to why I wasnt updating. My phone was relocked and unrooted but he picked up on it and said he wouldnt even touch the phone to give me help as modding the phone voids warranty. I was able to figure out on my own and fix it but they were pretty strict on the rules.
You're lucky man!! I asked in a shop and they said that I'll lose warranty. What carrier??

Not true, rooting is discouraged but is not grounds for denial of warranty.

You can still have a valid warranty if you are rooted, but it depends for what you a claiming damages. If your power button stops working, that has nothing to do with root, they will just repair the button or give you a new model. However, if you call up your carrier and say something about your phone not turning on, then they might deny you coverage if they find out your phone was rooted/flashed

Reread what you posted, your first sentence and last sentence kinda contradict each other. Also, all I am talking about is rooting, not hardware failures, not water damage.
You should read the pdf I posted, they cannot deny you warranty just for rooting. Individuals may give you problems because they do not know Sprint's own policies, but if you escalate you should eventually find someone who knows what's what.
Oops I had it mixed up thanks for clarifying. Hardware problems can be fixed rooted as long as they don't check. If its something root related then no. Always best to return to stock everything and if you can reset flash counter.

Last year when I bought my Galaxy SII, I forget what I was asking the guy at the T-Mobile store but he suggested I root it (planned on it anyway), he rooted all his phones, and I shouldn't have any problems if I have to return it but if I do to just go back to stock first.

[Q] Reset ODIN counter

I have an issue with my T999 and that is, I cannot connect via USB (charging or otherwise). I talked with T-Mobile and they're sending me a replacement phone and I have to send my current phone back to them. This is great, but what my concern is, the ODIN counter is at 8, but it is currently not rooted and no custom ROM. I read that if there is any number on the counter, it will void warranty, in which case, I will have to pay for the replacement. I read that I can reset the counter while rooted, but I cannot even connect my device to the computer to do so. I am only asking, because I have searched and could find no information to help me out. I feel that I am just screwed unless someone knows how I can root, reset and flash without USB connectivity.
Thank you.
Do you have CWM or TWRP recovery? If so, it's quite easy. If not, then I'm not sure of any way to do so.
Have you tried other cables or on a different computer?

Unfortunately, I do not have any recoveries that I know of. I have tried other cables and computers, but the connection on the phone itself is screwed. It's so bad in fact, that it shuts the computer down for safety reasons. :crying:

Unfortunately, I don't thing there is anything you will be able to do then. You have to be able to connect to the computer to root the phone. Theres just no other way that has been discovered that I am aware of.
I have heard a lot of people claim that they don't bother checking the counter, so there is hope. Sorry I dont have any better ideas for you man. Good Luck though!

This is true. If I find something, will surely post in here. Also, would like an opinion. My phone is going back due to a hardware malfunction, not software. Is it a possibility that the counter won't even be an issue?

If they check it, it will be an issue. This is why so many have major problems with this practice. Rooting the phone, or flashing a rom has nothing to do with a faulty usb port, speaker wiring, loose button, etc. But they can and have refused warranty claims for this before.
Like I said though, I have seen plenty of people claim they got theirs replaced and the counter was tripped. So apparently they never checked it. But on the other side, there have also been people who verified that their claim was denied due to the counter.
If you have insurance though, such as Asurion through Tmobile, this doesnt matter at all. You can flash it, drop it, kick it, drown it. light it, and then throw it across the room, and they will still replace it, minus deductible of course.
I have seen where a few people have replaced the usb port on their phone though. The part is probably pretty cheap, and if its an easy replacement, you may want to consider it.

OK. I get that. I went to a T-Mobile store yesterday with my issue and was told that, if there was an issue with the warranty, I would have to pay $110 (I currently do pay for insurance/protection plan through T-Mobile). The man who looked at the phone said that it looked as though it was just damaged by a faulty Micro-USB plugin, and said that in his opinion, there should not be any issues as far as the warranty goes. That is why I was wondering about the counter and if that would impact it. But the insurance I have is through T-Mobile, and on that note, I should not stress too much about it? I receive the replacement phone as early as tomorrow, in which time, I will send the old one back, where they will inspect the damages and come to their conclusion on whether or not I will have to pay, or if everything is covered. I have found a couple of wireless ADB connections for the phone, but it has been so long since I have rooted the phone that way, that I am just going to take my chances and hope all goes well with the exchange process. Thanks for everything!
Please let us know the final outcome.
If you filed through T-Mobile it's going to be warranty. If you went through Asurion it's insurance. Insurance has a $150 deductible, so either way it sounds like you're better off using warranty.

[Q] Regarding the warranty and those who flash

After learning that once we flash a rom, we are 100% screwed if we ever need to use our warranty. The only reason I bought the T-Mobile Note 3 was because of the unlocked boot loader, and now I learn that if my device ever breaks, Samsung will not honor it? There has to be a way, or I'm sure others wouldn't be dropping $700 so easily on this device.
What do we do if we develop a genuine issue with this phone after we have flashed roms on it and restored to stock?
Edit: in triangle away my counter reads: 0 and binary: custom
You did read about your options before you bought the phone right? There are other threads where this is/has been discussed. There are options.

Yes, there has been, however, most of those threads are full of useless clutter that doesn't contribute anything. I have searched, and have been a member of these forums for a long time, and know how they work. I don't see any options for those who have already flashed a custom rom and want to maintain their warranties.

Then you already know the answer.
If you are looking for Samsung, T-Mobile or any other provider to come out and say, Yes, if you root and flash your phone it will still have Warranty Coverage.... it won't happen! They are never going to say that. All of them have listed policies that say rooting = no warranty.
The Knox flag might bring in a new element to this, it shouldn't but could.
The reality however depends on how you deal with it, like stated above, I have personally never had a warranty issue if there is a hardware problem with my phones regardless to rooting it. For the first year, you should be dealing with T-Mobile for issues. But a lot depends on how you deal with it.
Options:
Have hardware replacement warranty (Provider, SquareTrade etc)
Be smart when you call for support, the word Rooted, Different Rom is not in the conversation.
Rooting, flashing ROMs is not something 99.5% of the users of the devices do. Most have no idea what it is, any any idea that it exists. So for most users of devices, this is a non-issue.

I am not a current T-mobile customer, so I doubt they'd cover it if I'm not one of their customers with an insurance plan. Still, no guarantees if they do that I'd still still be covered since I flashed a rom.
Is SquareTrade really worth the $125 for two years? Even then, would they cover it if I flashed a rom if something happened?
Boy do I miss the days of the Galaxy S2 and S3 where none of this even came into question.
A bit OT, but one reason why I liked staying with Sprint was because they did cover my phone regardless of root. Too bad their network sucks.
See when u said u bought the T-Mobile phone I was under the impression u had T-Mobile service. It a chance you took so just read and ask questions before you flash anything that might brick ur phone. If you bought the phone from the mobile they must issue 1 year warranty regardless. But it will be a battle for you

I've been flashing roms on Samsung devices for over two years now, so I'm pretty experienced and haven't bricked a phone yet. My concerns are the device malfunctioning on its own or developing a hardware issue. Assuming flashing a custom rom had nothing to do with it, would Samsung still honor the warranty?
This really makes me want to return the device mwhy did they have to do this?

Samsung will not honor it if it powers up and shows a mod has been done. But if phone does not turn on then as long as no physical harm has been done they have to warranty it

Replacing Phone (With KNOX_WARRANTY)

Alright, so one of my buddies that works at T-Mobile, he Claims that as long as your phone is on Stock (Or looks like Stock) you should be able to turn your phone in for a Replacement or towards a different phone with Jump.
Obviously the phone I will be attempting to trade in has its Knox_Warranty flag at 0x1
I am going to try this tomorrow with one of my S4's that I unrooted today and back to 4.3 Stock. Anyone that has been curious on Replacement or upgrading with Jump etc, I should find out tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck.
I will post results when I get back!
I wouldn't worry. I did a warranty exchange cause the back camera stopped working. All I did was Odin back to stock.

I have a friend who works at a store, I asked him if they are told to look for anything (customization, etc) or even check the bootloader.
He said the only thing they are told to look for is water damage, other than that they don't care. All they do when you Jump is send the phone back and i'm assuming TM just erases everything and resets the device before sending it out as a refurb one.
Just upgraded my phone, no problems, you're good to go

I'm actually glad to hear this. I may go and flash the latest bootloader so I can have everything up to date.
Just to make sure, if knox IS tripped, it does not effect the status of your warranty through T-Mobile? Meaning if something were to go wrong with my phone I won't have any issues getting a warrant replacement?

I mean I don't know the specifics, i'm sure if you actually asked T-Mobile if it voids the warranty they would say yes, all i'm saying is if you take the phone to use the Jump program they don't even look at the bootloader, most of those guys don't even know how to get into Download Mode let alone check it.
I would say No I don't think you would have a problem, but you never know, the decision is up to you.

To confirm what you said earlier, what T Mobile is doing is taking your used phone and doing a complete factory refurb on it. That means a total wipe of the entire memory and a clean now install, as well as replacing worn out body panels like a cracked glass or scratched up plastic peices, etc.
Doing this the way a factory refurb does it that will wipe out Knox and flash counters and custom ROMs and all that jazz. They have equipment that will do what Odin can't. So they don't care.
If you do get a T Mobile store rep who does check the bootloader and makes a big deal out of the Knox flag, just take your phone to another T Mobile store. Or come back to that one the next day and talk to someone else. 9 out of 10 store clerks are not phone nerds like us. They are people with minimal phone training just working a retail sales job. If you get get the 1 phone nerd, another store will have 4 guys who don't even know what a bootloader is.
Once T Mobile takes the phone from you and processes the exchange, they cannot come back later and claim that it doesn't qualify. If they did you can just say you have no idea what they are talking about and their rep inspected prior to the exchange so something must have happened after it left your possession.

Thanks. I asked in here because two T-Mobile Reps told me if the warranty is void on the phone, then they cannot honor the jump program. And seeing as they are accepting knox tripped devices for the jump program, it seems like knox does not void your warranty.. which makes me like Samsung even more (and T-Mobile)

Once rooted/flashed, can I restore my phone to out-of-the-box?

I just bought a new (used) Note 4. It is fresh, stock, BOB7.
If I root, install recovery, and install a new rom, I figure it will trip Knox and turn it "custom".
My question - is it possible after that to return to out-of-the-box-stock? Do I have to take an image of the current config or something?
Thanks!

Yes. You can odin the stock ob7 tar and the phone will be as out of the box but of course Knox will still be tripped.

Wasnt there talk in the past, forgot who or what thread it was in/about and it was stated that after the repair center gave them their phone back the knox-counter was reset to 0x0 ?
Ive seen many mentions of xda users in this forum(N910P) of working at sprint stores, if not that, working in the repair center. With the FUSE counter itself being an issue and the Signature also being an issue, i wonder the validity of that claim(counter reset), let alone if anyone who claims to work at sprint, could provide feedback on that claim, which at the time, there was none and yet to be.
And the surprising jump in members alone from the last year and a half to current date(wasnt it like 5.5 mil and now its sitting at a cool 6.5 mil) no telling how many Samsung employees probably just sit and search to counter hurdles that have been leaped, only to have updates, like OE1, magically and inconveniently push out updates thwarting what devs have accomplished.

Well. I had run across a tmo thread that had posts stating phones had been returned with the Knox bit reset. There was a guy posting in that thread saying he worked out front at a Samsung authorized repair joint and had techs tell him the bit can be restored. Others elsewhere thought it would take replacing the mother board to achieve that. Bottom line I took from all that was samsung will repair a clearly bad hardware issue even with the bit tripped. Of course a lot of legend in their own mind types put the pupu on that but it has happened.
And yes, Samsung has been engaged in a we'll show you thing. Now I'm probably going to catch a lot of flack for saying this but I'm going to.
Most of the development for Android devices comes from the US... I think it's very likely the Koreans (samsung) hate that and take it as a challenge to show how much better/smarter they are than we.
Just my non insider opinion...

Yep, TW, Tizen, Knox, KnoxII, menu/recents button. Need I say more: Samsung/Galaxy app store, Milk, Chrome plug-in, security updates. Google has a rocky relationship with Samsung. One minute they're slapping then on the wrist, the next minute they're defending them in court against Apple.
All the while Samsung is copying Google to be their own standalone mobile platform. They may succeed eventually.
Competition is good. Truth is Samsung needs Google right now with its dwindling sales.
When the S5 came out with the menu switch from recents back to menu as an option, I was with Samsung on that but the Note 4 seemed to be a wink at Google like Samsung was more willing to do things Google's way. That gave us the silly white background menus and removed the menu/recents option in settings. What a cave in! Wrong move giving us KnoxII with non-user trip reset and this ugly UI. I hear they messed with the S5 on updates too. Yuck Samsung!

Yes... The awful "material" white background, so retro low tech, so dos ansi... I was one very happy user when @tx_dbs_tx came with the dark mod... It wasn't perfect but it was what I preferred.
