Do i need to root to install TWRP with odin??? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have hard reset my phone and want to flash DN4 ROM just wondering do I need to root before I instal TWRP and can this process be done without an sd cars
thank you

YES u need root and cwm/twrp recovery to install any custom rom

Ok will saferoot be ok for this.

Cwd and twrp am i correct in thinking these are both the same sort of program and i just need one of them?

No. You don't need root. Just install twrp via Odin and flash away

No need root. TWRP and CWM have same aim but they have different features, looks etc. This section for Android development so please be careful before you open a topic.

Sure you need root for that ,, if you install it without root you just can see 3 buttons reboot system , download and recovery
but with root you can do every thing like backup , clear data , install custom roms and more :good:
And you need just one of these Recovery's
hope i helped you

[Q] ...before trying new roms on Arc S

After reading for quite some time posts about trying new roms on my Arc S, I decided to go for it , but first I just wanted to make sure that i didn't miss anything.
1. root my phone with DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit
2. install ROM Manager app and install CWM from ROM Manager
3. make backup of my current rom with rom manager
4. unlock my bootloader
5. flash custom kernel using fastboot
6. boot into CWM recovery and install new rom from SD card
is this ok and if so, do i gain something by backing up my current rom before i unlock my bootloader?

yes by backing up your rom you can recover it if anything goes wrong with the new rom u've installed
OR
1: unlock bootloader
2: flash custom kernel
3: Enter recovery..backup ur present ROM and do a full wipe and install a custom ROM without any need to restart in between
4: Enjoy the new ROM

well that was my question in first place, do i gain anything by making backup BEFORE i unlock the bootloader. somehow your answer tells me i gain nothing
one more question, by doing it the way you said, i dont have to root the phone because...all custom kernels are pre-rooted?

you wont gain anything if u backup before or after u unlock the bootloader..it will be same..
All "custom ROMS" are prerooted..so u dont have to root it..
update: oh yea i forgot..u will lose everything after u unlock bootloader..thanks pvyparts for clearing that out
just a few thoughts that you should consider
First
The bootloader unlock clears ALL data! so if you want to return to your "pre EVERYTHING" you need to take a backup before you do that.
Second
"Rom Manager" does not work with our phones fully.
Third
hmmm i forget now

JB-MR1 Help!

Hi all, I was on AKOP's milestone ROM before trying to flash their newest one. I did not do anything to the kernel or anything by the way.
I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.2.7 and I rebooted into recovery and flashed super dark side wipe and then JB-MR1 and then gapps.
I went through the entire start up process with inputting your information and then finally I got into the actual home screen. I clicked around to see how the UI looked and then decided to reboot through the menu.
It was in the rebooting animation icon for at least 30 min before I decided to pull the battery. I want to wipe and start again but my cwm recovery isn't installing anything.
EDIT: The phone still works as I can boot into the phone and use it. I'm trying to reboot now: power button hold>reboot, but its taking ages still...need help on this reboot thanks
Any help here?
EDIT 2: Pretty much phone is "functional" but any method of trying to reboot or reboot into recovery fails
Thanks all!
Check the Md5 hash to make sure it is a good download.
Otherwise it sounds like it is CWM that can be causing issues.
Which version of gapps are you flashing?

Checked the Md5 with an app and it matches up perfectly with akop's main website.
I'm running 6.0.2.8 cwm. Is it even possible that its cwm? I used the same version to flash AKOPs new ROM.
and im flashing gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
Does it have anything to do with my kernel?
You aren't supposed to use super wipe with cwm 6. That is probably your problem.

Thanks so much for pinpointing the problem! Is there a fix to this?
And is this the recommended method of flashing? (Taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926754):
1. Wipe factory data/reset
2. Wipe cache
3. Go into mounts and storage
4. Format /system
5. Format /data
6. Format /cache
7. Enter advanced
8. Wipe dalvik
9. Flash ROM then gapps
10. Reboot and let the ROM settle for 5-10 minutes if flashing TW ROMs, this step is unnecessary for AOSP based ROMs.
11. (Optional) if flashing a new radio flash AFTER the ROM has been initially booted for the first time. No wipes are necessary when flashing a new radio but it HAS to be flashed after the ROM is loaded and settled in. Flashing a radio first and then a ROM has caused issues like the phone not even recognizing there is a network for it. ( phone remains in emergency mode )
Edit:
Pretty sure my phone is bricked now... in a continuous boot up loop... BUT i can still access recovery

Yes, those are the proper flashing instructions for CWM6.
It sounds like you have a soft brick. I think your best bet is to Odin back to stock. Have a look here:

Good luck.

I'll try this at once!!
I have 2 questions though.
1. in regard to kernels. Do i need to do anything (aka change my kernel?) Or is the stock kernel suitable for 4.2.1?
2. If i cant boot into my phone to get to my SD card, how do i download and put files onto my phone?

Stock kernel is just fine.
Odin will flash the stock OS to your phone from the computer. Make sure to read the Odin directions a few times before trying it because it could hard brick if something goes wrong.

I'm trying to read through the thread you gave me but its kinda cluttered and its hard finding exactly where to start...pointers?
From the first post of that thread you will need
1. The prerequisites
-Odin
-Drivers
-Kies(dunno if this is mandatory but I guess it couldn't hurt.)
2. T-Mobile t989 uvlhi stock ROM(Odin)
You will need some type of zip software to extract the files from this.
3. Follow the steps under Installation - Odin installation(skip step 1)
After you get the stock ROM running you can install custom recovery and then flash your custom ROMs.

You are welcome. You are now unrooted so you have to download the recovery of your choice to the internal SD card and flash it from the stock recovery. After you reboot back into recovery you can flash a ROM and you will be rooted.

If you download the flashable zip from the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30497342
you should be able to flash it from stock recovery. If it doesn't work I will have to look up how to install it with Odin.

I actually got cwm 5.0.2.7 on my phone through odin. I just need root now to upgrade it to the most recent version.
I've been seeing busybox paired with superuser.
Do i need busybox? Or can i just flash superuser through cwm recovery 5.0.2.7?

[Q] Root for SM-P605 kitkat

Hey
I been looking in the forums, but I havent be able to finde if there is a root for kitkat.
Do anyone know if that is one and if so, can you plz link to the thread
Thaning you in advance
Yes: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu
Although I have a p600 and his method worked fine for JB and KK.
Don't use the P6700/601 cf-autoroot on your P605. It will brick it...
The old cf-autoroot is for JB and doesn't work on KK...
Go to the Original developement thread and look at the TWRP 2.7.0.1 thread. It will supply answers and links...

Root p605kitkat 4.4.2
Hi All, hope I'm posting this is the right forum .Im quite a beginner in Android terms so please be patient with me ...
I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 sm-p605 and use it while travelling , i dont have a computer with me most of the time so i rely on the tablet for most of what i do , yesterday i have updated to android 4.4.2 kitkat , whitout knowing i would loose full access to my 32 Gb SD card...well that made me quite furious as most people...so i decided try rooting it , after backing up all my files i used CF Auto Root ( CF-Auto-Root-lt03lte-lt03ltexx-smp605.zip , well that didnt quite work as i was getting
the boot loopwith the message RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING, after much reading i was able to recover the tablet to boot back , no rooting was done but im pretty sure i triggered knox and voided the warranty ....anyway i still want to try getting full access to my SD card, either by rooting it or any other way ,if there is a valid file explorer app without root i am keen to know, or if anyone can show me the way to root this device I will really appreciate.Device Details:

Mate, you were told cf-autoroot DOESN'T work and will screw things up... Why did you flash over something not working right?
You needed to find the stock recovery first, then flash 2.7.0.1 (not 2.7.0.0) to get TWRP installed. You then flash latest supersu using TWRP. This will root your device and give you a custom recovery..
The only thing is TWRP can't make a backup to the External sd card if you have it formatted exFAT...
Best advice, flash stock rom (kitkat only) again using PC ODIN, try again...

0. If you screwed something up, flashed a wrong recovery, flash the stock rom again. If you are stuck in a boot loop, there is plenty of thread about how to boot into odin mode from there.
1. Download attached TWRP 2.7.0.1, it works with P605. I have it myself.
2. Start the tablet, download SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip, place on SD Card.
3. Reboot into Odin mode, (VolDown+Home), flash TWRP. If your recovery is being restored, don't tick Auto Reboot in Odin and turn off manually after flashing, then boot into TWRP.
4. Boot into TWRP, reset to factory settings. You will be asked if you want Root at some point. I think it's when you reboot, I don't remember.
5. When booted into Android, see if SuperSU downloader app is there. If no - boot TWRP and look around, because you missed something.
If yes, reboot into TWRP again and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip.
Congrats, you are now rooted.

After you flashed wrong recovery and have "zebra screen", Make sure you flashed stock firmware after that. Don't try flashing anything else before you flash stock.

Remember, TWRP is VolUp+Home. It should display colored text in the right upper corner on 2014 logo when booting, if it's entering recovery mode.

Okay, first, you may want to try flash the v10g version of the stock ROM because it's the best starting point for flashing the custom ROM on lg ogp device. Follow the instructions in the link below and you should be good. I don't know why someone would tell you to use the towel root with the stock v20 rom because a lot of time it doesn't root properly. The instructions you were originally gave were to root with the towel root and then install the busy box so you can use the freegee. With the freegee you can install either cwm or twrp custom recovery. Once you have the custom recovery, reboot into the recovery and then flash philz custom recovery because it's better than the freegee's. Philz recovery is optional if you don't feel like you need it, it just has more bell and whistle, that is all. You can flash the custom ROM with either custom recovery, philz or freegee. However, I'm more concern with you trying to root with the v20 stock ROM, because you will likely run into many issues. So be sure to read the guide I give you first.

Hey! thanks for the replay! I just got one helper because the rom guy didn;t want to help me so the others.Only 1 guy wanted to give me hints and I managed to install this stock rom.
So you're saying that I have wrong rom installed?
Do I have to really instal other rom or can I do it on mine but in other way to root it and process it so as to install http://forum.xda-developers.com/optimus-g-pro/development/mar-0-lollipop-g-pro-v1-t3043779 or not?

but whole day passed and nothing was done U.Ux
Read the guide I give you.
Managed to root my phone by iRoot.
Now I tried install busybox but after I hit install: "it looks like the instalation of busy box was not successful try installing to different location that may resolve the issue"....
any tips?
If you can't install the busy box, that usually has something to do with the root. That's the reason I said not to use the v20 stock ROM as the starting point. The only reason you need the busy box is the freegee, you can install the recovery without using freegee, but you have to search around XDA first because freegee opens up the boot loader, which is also the reason you can't just flash the recovery with the lg flash tool. You may have to flash v10g version of the stock ROM.
Ok I'm in philz menu.Someone said that all I need is to install(ANY) rom and kernel-how I do it? I want http://forum.xda-developers.com/optimus-g-pro/development/mar-0-lollipop-g-pro-v1-t3043779
Have you used a custom recovery before? Down load both rom and kernel installing files to a directory that you prefer, usually some where on your external sd disk. Once you get the files, go to philz recovery and press install zip, find the directory where the installing files are located, press on them, and it should install the rom. If you have never done this before, remember to factory or clean install the rom. On philz recovery, there is a function call installing a new rom under factory reset section, use that every time you're installing a new rom.

Installed CM12.1 on my e980. And now the wifi isn't working at all. Have searched and tried some fixes but to no end. Any suggestions?

Yup, I advanced wiped my phone (TWRP) and cleared cache, dalvik and system
What's Wi-Fi doing? I notice there are issue with the modem on cm12.1 based custom rom. During the boot up, it would spent long time searching for the signal, but I never have problem with the Wi-Fi though, then again, I'm not using cm12.1 but vanir instead. However, somewhere I remember reading that someone else is having a issue with the Wi-Fi on cm12.1, and he fix it temporarily by setting up the Wi-Fi each time.

Root problem

Can someone help me please? I have been through this root process installed TWRP and made a nandroid back up, rebooted into system (all good) checked root and response is my device isn't rooted? I don't want to brick the phone as it is essential please advise. Thanks in advance
Did you flash either SuperSU or Magisk?
TWRP is a custom recovery, not a root solution. It's like a tiny operating system that your phone can boot to to make changes on the main OS. You will need to flash another zip in TWRP in order to gain root access.

I'll do that thanks for reading; by flashing another zip shouldn't brick the phone? Do yo have any recommendations?

No it just overwrites it.. If you flash a rom you need to flash supersu every time you do that. Same goes for kernels most of the time.
