Hello there. Yesterday I saw strange process named mm-qcamera-daemon. After research about this issues, I found info about this -> a massive battery drain, caused by bugged camera driver (only in 4.4.2).
For me, I found solution -> Permission manager . In my case, the new Viber 5.x.x make my camera non-stop working and the battery is terrible! I just forbade Camera permission in Viber, restart the device and everything was fine. In other option - just remove Viber, restart and check what is the result.
* In the store, you can find many perm mng
My device -> S3 Neo I9301I stock with Odin Rox root method
Thanks for the note. I have already notified the developers at Viber and they fixed the issue with their latest release.
For those who use the old editions, you can use Permission Manager or DonkeyGuard... Both serve the same purpose
Update: after few days, I reaslized, that my I9301I beauty has many services and apps, that comming with stock ROM (yes, I use it, plus the root method from @Rox) and personally I installed one file manager, viber, web browser, mobile operator app for control over my mobile data charges and etc.; Shazam, app for local weather, file manager, office packet, forum reader and few other stuff. With this configuration, my phone was able to drain the battery with 10-15% for like a 20 mins! So I decide to take care of this problem and try few things, that may be will inscrease the battery life.
Well, I use my I9301I for Gmail, web browsing (different from Chrome, because Chrome drain too much CPU power), file manager for opening/reading doc, txt files, Viber for chat and internet calls and more than 51% of the time -> like a ordinary phone for calls and SMS messages. After one day test I've got very good result - 8% battery drain for 14 hours work day. I'll make future update after week or two.
To this moment, I do several thing to complete – I installed a few very important applications – AppOps manager, Greenify, Xposed, FastDormancy and Greenified -> with this I double the battery life for over few days – 3 days with Wifi/ data and 7 days like just a normal call/ sms mobile phone!!! I must say something else – over wifi, my battery is batter, mobile data draining around 50% more power! I sync the apps update and gmail sync only 3 to 6 times per day, because of my job. I doesn’t use social applications like Facebook, Google+ and etc. Look closer to my process list – it’s optimized for my purpose only!!! You must carefully watch with process is frozen and why. Future updates with more info, after 2-3 weeks of using the custom @Rox rom.
Best regards!
PM - Big thanks and hitting over the 323254 times Thanks button to @Rox and others guys to share their experience with the community!
i found beter fix, just enable powersave on stock when you dont use phone it will prevent from that drain
Can I ask you which app you used to block all these processes? and in case if there's a free alternative...
And how did you tell the phone to synchronize only 3-6 times per day
This second s3 neo is drivin me crazy. I'm only using whatsapp (very very often) and my battery lasts sth like 10 hours. Now with the cores set to 300mhz with kernel adiutor it dropped from 100 to 74% in 3 hours.
My mom with a similar config on a s3 neo can do 2 full days with a super light whatsapp use and with ABSOLUTELY NO kind of power saving mode on.
I cannot believe that all this is whatsapp related. Seriously.

About to get my desire this week, what are the first things i should be doing. ?
How do I ensure I'll get the best from the battery ?
Any apps I should get ?
Thanks
3G drains my battery, so i keep it off and turn off all the background sync stuff.
i stopped using the friendstream quite quickly and just got a decent twitter app and use the web for facebook.

ROOT your phone and:
- get SetCPU app to throttle your CPU when screen is off or battery is low,
- downgrade radio if you will have a never version,
- use UnderVolted (UV) kernels (coming soon), that will decrease CPU power consumption and in many cases can add about 10% speed,
- use y5 battery saver app
OR
- set up locale + plugins to turn off some things (I turn off sync and wireless networks during night, when at home)
My battery is fine with 3g on, in fact I read somewhere that gprs can sometimes consume more battery since its 100 times slower at data connection than 3g/HSDPA etc..
I just turn off wifi & synch when I leave my home and do manual refresh's if I need to, at home it is always connected by USB to my computer, but I will get a dock for it at some point.
3g mostly sucks battery when it has a hard time staying connected. It's the constant scanning and reconnecting that kills the battery. I would say root it as soon as you get it. I haven't rooted mine and its fine. Apparently there are still some issues with rooting the Desire too. It would be nice to have an overclock/underclock utility though.

Thanks for the posts.
I don't plan on rooting it yet !!
Not if 2.2 is due soon(ish)
I take a look at the links provided and let you know how I get on
Not sure if this is a bug or something, but my Android OS usage is extremely high from 40-50%. Also the Android OS always is downloading something, my wifi icon is always downloading when on wifi, but it doesn't when I'm on a mobile network. Is anybody else having the same issues? Also my auto-sync is only for my Google account which includes Gmail, Calendar, Contacts and Google Music. See the attachments for usage statistics.
Install BetterBatteryStats (there's a free xda version available), do some reading on how to use it, and you'll find your issue easily.
Make sure all bloatware is removing from your phone, that did the trick for me.. I get 22-24 hours of usage.. on 4G of course.
I have the same problem here. Android OS uses most of the battery, whereas display only uses 20-30%, kind of weird
But the phone still gives me power for all day long

All my bloatware is removed, I got factory unlocked so I don't have the usual carrier stuff. Think I'm going to root and flash the AOSP rom onto my phone.
Its an error in reporting with ICS, it is not actually draining.
I haven't used my S3 in a while since I got my Nexus 5 but never got around to selling it. I was thinking of giving it to my mom instead, who's never used a smartphone but expressed some interest in getting one.
I had unrooted and flashed a stock Rogers 4.3 in anticipation of selling it.
Last week my Nexus 5 died and while waiting for my replacement I was using the S3 again as a backup. Since I only needed it for a few days I didn't do any rooting or customization and lived with the stock experience.
However, I found there was serious battery drain. Much more than I recall when I was using it prior to 4.3 (which came out around the time I switched phones). Based on betterbatterystats it looked like this was being caused by a wakelock related to google network services. I see the same wakelock on my Nexus 5 but it doesn't seem to cause any drain while sleeping while on the S3 it's probably losing 20% per hour while sleeping which is a major issue. Is this a known issue with Samsung's 4.3?
So I want to give her the phone in a state that is as maintenance free as possible. I planned to just keep it stock but the battery drain is going to make this phone useless for her and any kind of apps/utilities to tweak battery usage is not going to be a tenable solution with the phone in her hands. She's going to have her hands full just learning the basics.
Is there any way to fix the stock ROM to fix this battery drain issue? If not, is there a custom ROM that does not exhibit this problem but is fully stable and usable by a non-technical user? My experience with custom ROMS has been they all seemed to have various bugs or issues, probably related to incomplete driver support. That's one of the reasons I wanted to get a Nexus. But I haven't followed S3 development since so any suggestions on stable ROMS that don't need any tweaking would be appreciated.
Thanks!
On the stock side, you could start with a non root debloating effort.
Two basic principles are:
Eliminating 2x & 3x built in apps & services like email client, music store, contacts sync, social networking updater, weather widget etc. That is to say pick from the Samsung, Google or AT&T (or no) version and "Turn Off" the others in Application Manager, as able. Obviously root & say, App Quarantine would give greater reach there.
Secondly, reducing unneeded background activities like synching in selected apps' (like Gmail or Skype) settings menu and, if sufficient wifi uptime is available, "Restricting background data" per app; below the pie chart (in Settings/Data usage, after scrolling downward from the bar chart to click on individual apps.) This will limit top background data hogs from overusing cellular data connection activity (with its battery impact) & restrict them to the wifi connection. This works (non destructively wherever real time data can wait for wifi).
My rooted, modded stock 4.3 may be a little less restrictive than yours, but these procedures can make a pure stock flash tamer while considering root options.

Hi fellas i recently been testing a few roms and of course everyone out here is complaining about the battery life, almost the 45% of the user have a bad experience with it. and i saw that we were a little bit lost about how to preserve our battery and this below was something that i have test and other people has test and its work for all of them so now im sharing with you this with the community, i have collect some of this solution around some places and now they are here all in one place. hope you like it.
(this can work with any Phone with a rom based on android 4.4+ or lollipop and Remember to check your battery and how much mA has your battery.)
Here we go....
Well i have a I9190 and i been working on the battery life with this phone for almost one year since i bought it, look the first you need to know (and sadly is the worst thing about this phone) is the battery, for some reason the battery gets hot when you play or use Facebook over 3G networks and even when you are not using it, it might for the processor remember our cellphone have a powerful processor dual core 1.7 ghz and it will run ass hell.
From what i have done to get a better battery life with this phone (i love this phone for that reason i still have it), you can try this.
1. Use Greenfy ITS THE ONLY APP IN THE PLAY STORE WHO REALLY DO SOMETHING WITH THE BATTERY LIFE WHY? is hibernate these apps like Facebook and other who runs in background eating your battery, (do not greenfy whatsapp or messegner you may not receive messages, but its work very good for me!
2. the next thing ( as i mention before the mess with 3G network) try to use 2G network you will see a remarkable battery save.
3. you can try a processor manager to control the processor and set it up to run at 1.4 GHz or 1.3 GHz and in that way your processor will not use more power from battery(remember you could experience some lags few times).
4. if you are using this rom Lollipop Rom Port use the power saving mode and disable the CPU Performance to get a better results!
5. Sync Options are pretty good but the sync option its running 24/7 so its mean your cellphone will be transferring data all day, you can turn it off but... if you will have to enable it to sync your contacts info and phone number that your recently save(you can lose data like number is this feature is off and you do not sync your stuff manually, and emails will not reach you till you check the app or turn on the sync option)
6. Wifi, for me wifi is a battery saver, why? i have test my phone over a wifi network all day and i get 19-22 hours that is pretty a lot, so wifi can help you to have better battery life at work or a place where you can get a wifi network.
for me the most comun problem could be the sync option, but as i said before there some things to think about it before turn it off.
if you have any question about my results and research about how to get a better battery results PM or skype!
See ya!

yeah mate, share it if you want
Hi guys,
since two days I noticed that my battery is draining a lot quicker.
I pushed two full days to battery historian and noticed that in each day, GPS was constantly on and in use.
When checking the "last app that accessed location" then it was always "ImsService" that used it "0 mins ago" or "1 mins ago".
Day 1:
Total GPS use: 12h 20min
GPS use by app: ANDROID_SYSTEM 12h 20min
Day 2:
Total GPS use: 8h 7min
GPS use by app: ANDROID_SYSTEM 8h 7min
The only thing I changed in these last few days was deleting an e-sim and adding a new e-sim.
Any suggestions on what to do?
I have BBS installed but it can't seem to see what is causing the GPS drain with BBS.
Thanks!
Another weird thing I noticed:
Amaze & Simple Gallery need permission to access my "SD card" or files.
I have to set the switch to "allow" frequently. Like the permission gets lost every few hours/days.
Full wipe and start from the start? :S
Titanium Backup Pro?
As an update:
Did a factory reset and restored all apps / settings but with only 1 SIM.
For now the phone feels smoother and battery is A LOT better.
I monitored this for 2 days now.
Will activate my 2nd SIM today and see what is changing.
I might also remove Adaway + AFWall.
I believe I might have "crippled" my system too much previously.
I am thinking about going with adguard (which basically does what adaway + afwall does but with better monitoring / logging to find and fix issues) or nextDNS.
Gooble likes to ALWAYS track your location, even if you specifically tell them not to;
40 states settle Google location-tracking charges for $392M
Google has agreed to a $391.5 million settlement with 40 states to resolve an investigation into how the company tracked users' locations.

Among others, this is ONE of many reasons why I use google-free GrapheneOS instead of the crap it ships with.

Thanks but there might be more to it.
Today I added my 2nd SIM (e-SIM) and noticed that my battery drain has become huge again.
20-30% lost during the night.
So it seems to be related to the second sim.
Things that show up in BBS as main cause:
s5100_wake_lock
Sensor: Dynamic Sensor Manager(1), wakeup=true, Time: 7 h 25 m 4 s
RILJ_ACK_WL
No idea what that is and how to fix it though.
