If you're not traveling or planing to use differnet SIM cards then it's doesn't matter if you set to LTE or Global. The only thing you need to pay attention to is "no roaming", this prevent you to pay extra if you are outside of VZ network and using other cell sites from other network. By default it should already set to no roaming.

If I'm not mistaken LTE/CDMA mode only should save you on battery life, unless this has been a placebo effect, but in my experience it definitely saves battery. When I'm overseas, at least, I know that putting it in GSM only mode saves a ton of battery because it isn't always scanning for CDMA, but not sure if it works the same way here in the US, since LTE is technically a GSM standard anyways, so honestly not sure.

Mine was set to the same. Changed it to cdma/lte.
Sent from my Note 4.

If you look at your APN it default to version which is CDMA/LTE, in order for it to find other cell towel network when VZ lte is not available, you need to enable roaming, now global mode come into play when you add another APN let say from AT&T then it will search for AT&T network. If you're in US, it doesn't matter when settings and it has nothing to do with your battery usage. PPL that complained about battery drain is most likely they are not received good signal since then it will try to search for both network to find signal. If you want to have a peace of mind then set it to CDMA/LTE, you can't loose on this settings.

[Q] wifi calling from overseas

Hi,
I want to confirm if I'm overseas can I use the wifi calling feature to call back to the states and not incur roaming charges? I believe I'll still be charge minutes but not sure if they will be consider roaming.
Currently on Tmobile FrostyJB v4.
Thanks
According to the T-Mobile website:
support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1680
Billing
There is no additional monthly charge to use the Wi-Fi Calling feature on your handset. Wi-Fi Calling uses monthly plan minutes for the following:
Calls made from the US to US numbers
Calls made from the US to international numbers (subject to international rates)
Calls made from outside the US to US numbers (not charged roaming)
Calls made from outside the US to international numbers (subject to international rates, but not charged roaming)
Note: You must disable Data Roaming when traveling internationally to avoid incurring data roaming charges.

It should take from your bucket of minutes. To play it safe when abroad, I would go into the band menu and change it to a band that the country you're in doesn't use. To do this, just go to your Phone app, type *#197328640# and a secret menu will pop up, then hit [1]UTMS > [1]DEBUG SCREEN > [8]PHONE CONTROL > [7]NETWORK CONTROL > [2]BAND SELECTION. You should be able to select a band right there.
When coming back to the states, don't forget to go back to [2]BAND SELECTION and hit [1]Automatic to resume normal operation.
Another option would be to pop in a local SIM and call the States. It should be, depending on country, ridiculously cheaper.
What country are you going to?

You should be safe with wifi calling
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Just use the wifi calling feature. You don't need to buy a local SIM to call the States. Why not use the included minutes that you've already paid for? The thing is, you can't turn on wifi calling when you have Airplane mode on. So naturally it'll find a local network so the potential concern is your phone using the cell tower rather than wifi, which could happen on accident. That's why I provided steps on how to restrict the phone's modem to a band that isn't used overseas to remove that possibility. Better safe than sorry, or broke with overages.

You should be able to make WiFi calls to US as long as you make sure that your T-mobile Sim card is inserted and connected to a high speed internet service through wifi that is and WiFi calling is active. I have made call from Singapore, U.A.E and India back to US with no extra charges. Now that T-mobile offers unlimited UMA calls, I would add that to your account through customer service (ask them to add unlimited wifi calling). This way WiFi calls doesn't get counted towards your minutes. Have a safe trip.
Just buy a data-only sim card for your trip and make anything you want using internet!
There are some options I tried: local sim cards, MXTConnect sim card (for Europe).

Turn off LTE? [SOLUTION]

I have tried several different APN's and none give me data. AT&T has eliminated the GSM toggle menu under mobile networks. It should have:
GSM/HSPA/LTE
GSM Only
HSPA Only
GSM/HSPA auto
How can we turn off LTE? and use only "4G" (HSPA+) My phone sits in my desk drawer all day at work and I'd rather not have it on LTE killing the battery. I'd also rather NOT turn off mobile data as then I can't receive e-mails or picture messages.
AT&T really is doing more harm than good by eliminating the GSM toggle menue under mobile networks.
SOLUTION:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.

It's very strange that they would remove it from the Note II but allow it for the iPhone 5
I look forward to hearing the answer to this as well. Being forced to kill my battery if I'm not in an LTE area would piss me off.
just run juice defender. It will shut off your lte when your phone is locked and turn network data back up when you unlock the screen. It improves my battery by 1.6x-1.8x on my note 1. havent installed it on my note 2 yet, maybe after i see how the battery life is as is.

The iSheep wouldn't quit bugging Apple if they didn't include an LTE toggle. But AT&T can't touch the iOS software on the iPhone 5, which is probably why its on there.

This isn't really a solution. We need a toggle or a valid APN.

I agree. Seems like a bad option rather than a simple toggle or APN.
I take it the Note II for Sprint doesn't have this issue?

The claim above regarding battery life doesn't help other people much without scientific testing. Battery claims need details on what was done and for how long, screenshots, screen-on battery time, and LTE signal strength.

i'm on Rogers version, and it has the toggle to switch off LTE. Samsung Canada just said they will be releasing an update shortly with multifunction apps available. maybe someone can turn that into a great ROM once released....

So I guess we can conclude that att are real pricks and would rather sacrifice our battery life in the hope that LTE always being on will take some of the pressure off their 3G network
Even though I used LTE all day today, it really didn't affect my battery life. I know these chips are not first generation LTE chips and much more battery efficient.
I know this sounds contradicting but if I wanted HSPA+ only I could have very well purchased the international version.
I am hoping that every developer adds the option in their roms.s

Yes it does.
Hopefully Telus Rom can be used in are toys , That should provide us setting....not sure how modem would fly though
att has forced this on the gs3 and the first note as well the only way to really get it off is to run a canadian base rom.
If you download "Phone Info" from the Play store, under device information, you should be able to choose between the modes and bypass ATT's bs.

This was taken from a Galaxy S III forum so they didn't take in the Note's form factor obviously. You just have to remove the sim, power on the phone, and then select your preferred network, and then power off, and pop the battery in.
It works though, I get my normal strong HSPA+ signal with NO LTE showing up.

ATT note 2 as go phone

I have a att note 2 with a go phone sim card in it. I get hsdpa+ but can not get lte. When the sim card was bought it was used in a vzw note 2 would that effect it cause the vzw note 2 imei number was used to activate the sim. All the ready I have done someone said somewhere that the sim is probably not provisioned for lte. Well the point im getting at is I need help in trying to get lte and I know where im at there is lte cause my Co workers are currently on lte.

H+ is LTE. Check the phone status >> mobile network type and you will see you are connected to fastest available network.

If you are on a go-phone plan I would be very careful using mobile data. My wife doesn't use her phone much so she has a go-phone plan. I experimented with it some and a couple of apps got updated via mobile and it ate her $$ up in a hurry -- something to the tune of $17 in just a couple of minutes.
Then again there are a couple of different go-phone plans so this might not be the case for yours.

Sorry but h+ is not lte. And according to documents on att.com and other varies websites you can connect to lte with this phone on go phone plans
It is LTE if the rom doesn't have an LTE icon.
And how do you know you are in an LTE area? I'm in a large California city, and I almost never see the LTE icon.
HSPA+ is considered "4G" by ATT, but it is not 4G LTE.
AT&T 4g icon... yaya
At&t stock roms will show 4g icon in the status bar for both HSPA+ and LTE. This is where the confusion starts yay AT&T.
To check to see if you are on LTE I would go to settings / about phone / Status and check the mobile network type. I think this will give you a better indication of the network you are on.
An information app similar to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gdip.android.network may also help.
If you are still not getting LTE with your at&t go phone I would start by checking your apn settings.
I have used a few of at&t mvno's I have had straight talk, at&t-go, and currently prefer(and use) AIO wireless (now re-branded to Cricket). All of at&t mvno's don't even require you to unlock your carrier you can use any at&t phone on their networks.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
I've checked apn settings they are what it should be and in the settings menu it reads hspa+. And where I live and work both have lte. Gettysburg pa is where I live and I work in baltimore,md and people I know all have lte. I called customer service and they could see I was in a lte area and only receiving hspa+. They have a trouble ticket in. I know the icon in the notification bar always shows 4g thats why Ilike to always go off setting/about. Thank you for your help

you need a new sim, you can get LTE with at&t prepaid but if you have an older sim,it wont work. i had a note 1 on postpaid and was only getting h+ until i went to the at&t store and got a newer sim.
some people will try to say there is no lte on at&t prepaid, there is.

I agree with getting a new sim. Go to a corporate/retail store not a dealer/franchise store, as the corporate will give you a new reprovisioned sim and the dealer will say it won't matter, or charge you.
I just saw the LTE icon for the first time, but I am far away from my home now.

Rest my phone without service?

This is going to seem like a stupid question but, I have a Nexus running CyanogenMod 11 that I no longer use as a phone; it has no data plan. I am currently using a Moto X. But I'd like to do a factory reset through TWRP. Basically start fresh. The only thing I use the phone for now is WiFi to browse the web. Since a factory reset would clear all of my settings would I be able to sign back in on Google even though I don't currently have a data plan? I'm going to say that yes, I'd be able to but I just want to make sure. I don't want to render the device a paperweight.
safe reset
Most definitely, you can do anything device related via Wi-Fi that you could do via mobile data. If during initial setup after reset your device does not want to allow you to add a Google account using Wi-Fi, simply skip Google signin, and once device is running, just activate your Wi-Fi, join your network and add a Google account directly from Accounts and Sync in settings.

Thanks. That's what I thought but figured I'd jump on here and make sure. I'm not even sure what my plans are for this device. I love the Nexus but the Moto X is pretty awesome out of the box. My Nexus is on the last known good nightly for CM 11; 11-20140117-NIGHTLY-toro. I might just sell it. I just didn't want to reset it and make it a complete brick for someone else.

make and model? we can get it onto prepaid, or possibly enable gsm to pop a sim in, depending on what it is
Free Moto X
Verizon Wireless is the only major wireless carrier today that does not put a software lock on any of its 4G LTE smartphones. This means that whether you are on a contract or you paid full price for your Verizon 4G LTE handset, it is automatically unlocked.
You should be able to put a SIM card in it from any GSM carrier and it will offer basic voice, texting and 3G data. Whether it will also support LTE depends on what LTE frequency bands are
supported in the phone.
A Moto X designed for Verizon will work with either an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM on the gsm network. But you may be limited in terms of the service that you can access. As I said, you will definitely be able to text, call and use 3g, access to LTE will depend on the frequency band being used in your area, but most likely you'll be covered.
As far as the nexus is concerned, it supports LTE Band 4 AWS, which is also supported by AT&T and T-Mob on GSM, although not everywhere. A simple, cheap prepaid SIM from one of these networks popped into your nexus will confirm if it will work.
Hope I was able to help out, so now what are you waiting for? Go get yourself an AT&T or T-Mobile prepaid SIM and free your Gnex.

Using this phone on AT&T, can't get 3g data

I cancelled service with verizon, and put my att sim card into this phone.
But the best data connect I can get is edge (2g). I don't expect this phone to get ATT's lte network, but is there a way to get 3g data connection? Edge is just too slow.
Also, is voice quality tied with network type? I feel the voice quality was worse in comparison to my ATT phone. But the signal shows full bars.
Thanks.
Edit: today it magically worked. I don't know what happened, as I didn't do anything to it. It is now running on HSPA+, with very nice speed.

Yes, after setting it up I was able to connect to EDGE. But that is only 2g speed. I read online that many people were able to connect to 3g (HSPA+).
Some of them mentioned reporting IMEI to ATT. Would this matter?

Try to call ATT and make sure they provision your SIM card with 4G LTE service. (you might need an IMEI that is compatible with ATT LTE for them to activate that option)
