Sorry if this question has already been answered. I'm new here.

yes, until you are on stock without rooting

I am trying to apply to OTA update I got today, but for some reason it crashes half way through un-packaging the installer. Is this because I am rooted? Anyone else having an issue with the update?

What are you using to try to update? You are going to lose root if this is an OTA update.

It just came up on my phone and asked if I wanted to download it. I did, and it ask if I wanted to install. I clicked yes. It rebooted, got 1/4 of the way done with unpacking and froze up. I am guessing that its conflicting with the rooting. So I can't install any updates or I will lose root?
I don't think this update does much to anything I use.

It was mainly radios and and pri update with new software update. And yes you will lose root. You can just install a rom that is based off this ota if you really want it.

I want swype, mainly. I tried to install it from their website, but it says it can't install because its available OTA for EVO.

Then you can just download a rom that has it included and then pull the apk from the rom.
You NEVER want to take an OTA from Sprint if you are rooted. It will cause complications like that which may cause you to have a corrupted ROM. Always update to a ROOTED OTA. Check my stickied post in Q+A at the top. You will find the link to the stock ROOTED 3.70.651.5 version you can update along with any PRI and Radios.

Is there any way for me to disable the automatic checking for OTA updates? I'm having the volume fix update pushed to me, but I don't want to install it because of CWM. Whenever I dismiss the notification, it just pops up again in about 20 minutes, which is quite annoying.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
yeah install it and re-install CWM... or update via CWM to something else e.g Modaco custom ROM....
If I update and re-install CWM will I lose any of the date on my phone or my settings?

Should be fine..... but if you have CWM already do a Nandroid before trying so you can restore if you need to. Not sure what you would use to flash stock recovery tho... because you can't use the update unless you are running stock recovery.
Does anyone have an answer to the original question---how to disable checking for OTA updates?

Just got a ET4G and I'm getting a notification regarding an update being available and if I want to install it now or later.
My question is if I accept the update, would I still be able to root and flash a custom recovery...or does me accepting the update, squash my chances to root and flash a custom recovery?
Also, if I accept the update and can still root and flash a custom recovery, can someone please link me to the "How To Do" thread to root and flash CWM?
Thanks
You can accept the update and still do root. The Auto Root thread in my signature answers your other question.

Hello guys,
Just a quick noob question to which I get different answers: If I flash from yakjuxw to yakju and choose to flash a custom recovery, will I be able to receive OTA updates?
Thanks in advance
You will receive them, but you won't be able to install them if your recover isn't stock.

To add to what Petrovski80 said, you wont be able to install the update over-the-air, but you will be able to install it by downloading it to /sdcard and rebooting into CWM and installing it from there.
EDIT: And in most cases, you will likely see the update here before you get it over-the-air on your device.
And if I have flashed mods/kernels through CWM and i install the update, will the mods be preserved or do I have to flash them again?

If you flash "mods/kernels", the update will NOT install. If you change any of the original stock files, the update will NOT install.

You will need to Un-Root then update, then Re-Root.
What will be if i do update (if that can be done) over ota with still i have root?
