[Q] AFTV rooting won't work - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a new box today from Amazon Germany and I blocked the 2 domains before running the first set up.
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
softwareupdates.amazon.com
Now its stuck after gathering network information right after language selection.
It tells me ‘the internet connection is interupted, check cabeling and router settings’.
What can I do now?

No need to block those domains right now, you can't root anyway. Allow them to get through the setup, then block them after if you want.

The setup is done. Unfortunately without rooting.
Anyhow I've tried to block further updates. But when I add one of the both amazon-url I got network issue message and all content from amazon prime is gone.
My current firmware version is 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 and I heard the next firmware update installs the following:
“Self destruct” eFuse added to kernel which gets triggered if an older bootloader is used. This means Fire TVs that update to stock 51.1.4.1_user_514013920 can never be downgraded, even if a method to root them is discovered.

Any idea how to prevent updates?

My router is old so I had to use OpenDNS to block the sites listed in your first post. It seems to work because if I type in either of those websites in my browser I get a
"website blocked" message. At the moment I'm on 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 too.
I'm able to get Prime Video and no network issues.

I got the same network issue like Leghorn on the FW version 51.1.4.0_user_514006420. I also blocked the two domains in my router and have no more access to the prime content.
Leghorn, have you found a solution now? Or has anybody else an idea what i can do to get access to prime content?

If you are using a Fritz!Box try the following changes in your settings:
1.) In tab "Filter" -> "Listen" disable the setting "Teredo-Filter aktiv"
2.) In tab "Zugangsprofile" check your blacklist profile and enable " HTTPS-Abfragen erlauben"
Probably these setting changes may allow Prime Video again.

[q] got new AFTV, stuck on updating page after blocking domains

So I just got an AFTV off of eBay and it looks like I have a rootable version (no alternating language to german on the start screen) but after blocking the domains on my router, it still wants to update and doesn't seem to go past that to the initial setup like the guides say. I know some people had this issue, but am confused what my options are now.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: so i saw someone suggest using the dnsmasq option in Tomato routers to redirect the amazon servers to go to 127.0.0.1 which i did. now the screen says it's "trying to update but cannot contact our services. we will keep trying". after a few more minutes its asking me to unplug my power for a few seconds and then try again
Make sure you're NOT blocking "firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com".

Somehow got it to work!
Saw a comment on aftv news about letting it start to download the update and then quickly block one of the domains, and then letting it attempt to install it (and fail presumably). booted up, signed into amazon and was on a rootable firmware! woot!
Unable to update your Amazon Fire TV
I ran into the similar issue with "Unable to update your Amazon Fire TV"
I took a longer route. I signed up for OPENDNS's free service and and blocked the domain names there.
Then I updated my router's DNS seeting with the OPENDNS server and also used KEYWORD block in the router to block all the version of the software like "51.1.4.0_user_514006420". I only blocked the version for which there's no root available. I got all the version from this site

Wish I had seen this today before setting up a unit..... blocking the 2 urls that update no longer works..... There must be a new server for the updates.
Tried both of those options today, but unfortunately neither worked for me. It simply stopped and said to reboot and try again. Nothing would allow me to get past the download screen. Glad it worked for you though!
Hi
I have now a new ftv2 logedin with amazon account made one upgrade to 5.0.4 rooted it installed TWRP v6 3.0.0.5 installed latest Pre-Rooted 5.2.1.1 ROM for the Amazon Fire TV 2 and it worked, then I though as recommended to make full wipe (aftv guid) to get rid of kingo/king root. Now i still have a working recovery, but cant pass to the register screen, I only get to choose wifi and then "unable to update fire tv screen"
My regular wifi is blocking amazon updates(already have firtv 1 and 2 ftv sticks all rooted)
for testing I deactivated the blocks, didnt make a difference.
used wfi hotspot from phone, also did not work.
then I though downgrading to older pre rooted images could work but no change.
Did I miss something? any ideas thanks in advance
Solution: I had to unregister the Fire TV from https://www.amazon.com then it worked, found it an older xda post,

[Q] New Fire Tv 51.1.1.0

Hello, I've just received my AFTV "DSN 70900305....and it's on 51.1.1.0"
I looked at the aftvnews site about blocking updates before rooting, I'm using a dd-wrt router and i read some comments & people were saying it's not blocking the update sites because of the URL or the sites don't work no more which has me a little scared to put on the AFTV while my router is on.
Can some guide me step by step on how to proceed? Do I need to block updates 1st or can I root w/out an internet connection?
I mainly want it for Kodi but at the same time I want to be able to customize it to my own liking.

How do you know it's on 51.1.1.0? Have you finished the initial set-up? If so connect and root it quick (takes few seconds to send SuperSU and Towelroot app to fireTv, disconnect from net set them up as per below procedure) then re-connect and use adb to block updates. if you read and do your homework this should not take longer then a minute.

I got through...when the update started I had the option to cancel and take my time side loading the apps. It's now rooted on 51.1.1.0.

AFTV 1gen - No Updates, blocked by Amazon?

Hey Guys, hope this Question is not too stupid
Just read the amazon is going to update the AFTV 1gen to FireOS5 soon - so i wanted to get the latest OS3 for my Boxes, and disabled the url-blocking.
Anyhow, its now open for two hours, and both dont find any update. Its running on 51.1.6.1_USER_516010220, so there should be definitly a new version available.
Is it likely that amazon stopped pushing new updates, as os5 will arrive soon? Or is it a normal behavior that it doesnt find any new version after a few hours?
Just want to avoid getting updated to os5 too early, but as my version has still some bugs (like bluetooth-delay) i'd love to see it getting updated to the last stable os3...
The operative word is "soon." It's not out yet.
Well - maybe i asked it wrong?
Its not about when the new OS is out - its about why i dont get the latest OS3
Did you try forcing a check in Settings or were you just waiting for it to auto-update?
Did you try rebooting the Fire TV? I'm not sure if you are actually using URL blocking (as you say) or just domain name blocking (as what is typically described here and on various other sites), but if the latter, the Fire TV may have a DNS cache with the "invalid" IP address.
My AFTV got in September the last Update!
Yes thanks - i guess it was the DNS-caching. After leaving it for day as it was, finally a manual check was successful. Cheers!

I've experienced the same thing. I've powered on an AFTV that has been off for a few months and it doesn't update even though it's on software that is several versions old. I've found that making it forget and reconnect to a network helps get it to find the update. Factory reseting also helps.

Am I screwed?

Today my Fire TV Stick auto-updated to 5.0.5.1. It was rooted with Kingroot, but I've been too busy to get around to blocking updates or anything else.
Is there any hope to ever root it again?

Not with a stick.
AFAIK there is no regular root besides Kingroot known for the stick.
Well, turns out it doesn't matter because the device is ****ed now for some reason. It has trouble booting up and won't even detect my WiFi AP.
I wonder if it's because of the update.

Have you tried to uninstall any apps you installed & then doing a factory reset ? Wonder if KingRoot left some stuff behind that are messing things up too.
sorry to but in here
but can i root and block OTA on brand new stick?
can i get root if my stick is not already setup new out of the box?
or do i have to update from whatever fw it shipped with to the latest to get adb and unknown apps turned on?

It depends what FW it comes with & if it comes with any FW update baked in. And if it comes with rootable FW. Then how fast can you turn ADB Debugging ON & run the "Block Update" commands.
All the best guides are found here: http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
Note: FTVS's = 1st-gen
The 1st-gen Fire TV can be rooted, using an app called KingRoot, if it is running software version 5.0.0 thru 5.0.5. Custom recovery and pre-rooted ROMs that are compatible with KingRoot rooted devices are currently in the works and will be released soon. Until those become available, it is recommended that you block software updates to ensure your Fire TV remains on a rootable software version and wait for custom recovery to be released. Once the pre-rooted ROMs and custom recovery are released, I will write a guide for rooting the Fire TV running 5.0.0 to 5.0.5 and update this page. It is important to block updates because Fire TV software version 5.0.5.1 and up block the KingRoot rooting method.

This is what I would try:
I would connect the FTVS to a routers Wifi that does NOT have internet working (By unplugging the modems Cat5 cable that goes from the modem to the router). I would turn on the internet once I got to the login/register Amazon Account page. As soon as I got past the login/register Amazon Account page I would disabled the internet again (By unplugging the modems Cat5 cable that goes from the modem to the router) while keeping the internetless wifi still working. Then I would rush to turn on ADB Debugging while also checking the FW version it came on. Then on that same internetless router I would block updates thru ADB.
Using Method 2 of this guide: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/
Just tested unplugging my modem Cat5 cable from my router. Although I did get a nag saying Network Error. I was just able dismiss it & continue on to the Settings. So I believe it should work. The trick is to give it enough internet to get past the login screen but not enough to download the latest FW update. And then BLOCK THE UPDATES THRU ADB DEBUGGING OFFLINE but still thru your router.
Then you can continue to ROOT if that's what you want. But there are no PreRooted FW for 1st Gen devices at this time. But soon there will be.
NOTE: If the latest FW 5.0.5.1 is already baked in from factory then there is nothing that can be done. But I think is to soon for devices to start showing like that.
thanks but in episode 34 of AFTV new he specifically says he has a guide specifically for getting past the initial update on a brand new fire tv stick, but i can not find it on the website, it asks what device you are rooting then it asks what FW you have but i obviously can't see that , i need the instructions for blocking initial update so his start guide needs to be updated to include and option like new fire tv stick unknown FW black ck initial update
he says in episode 34 that you can link tot eh guide for blocking intitial update on a new device from the root start guide but i cant find it

he says you can use open DNS to block the amazon update servers to prevent the initial update but is this not impossible?
how can you possibly do this? don't you have to get past the setup screen and initial update to access the setting menu on the fire tv stick?
so how could you configure it to use open DNS if you can't get into settings until after you update and set it up?
is there some other way of accessing settings menu without going through initial setup? would this not defeat the whole purpose? if i can get into settings i can turn on adb and block updates, or is there a way to make it use open DNS without getting into the settings menu, this does not even make sense
correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't you already need to be past the initial setup to get into the settings menu to configure the fire tv stick to use open DNS in the 1st place?

That is why I wrote the instructions I wrote. It's much faster to only plug in the Cat5e cable for internet to the router just to get past the Amazon login/registration page then to change DNS settings on the device. Once you have unplugged the internet Ca5e cable from your router. Then you have all the time in the world to mess with settings (ADB Debbuging &/or DNS) on the device. You might even be able to Root the device OFFLine (Although I've never read someone do it this way).
Plugging & plugging the internet Cat5e cable will only take seconds to get past the login/register screen. We are hopping those seconds will not be enough time for the update to download.

Blocking thru OpenDNS first should work fine. Since When you first boot your FTVS you will first be ask to connect to a Network before you are asked to login/register to an Amazon account. There should be an "Advanced" option when assigning your Wifi values. Which will let you input OpenDNS settings like in the 2nd Option of the following guide.

Make sure you follow the "Configure password protected Wireless Connection". But use the OpenDNS values: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 . Make sure you have already created an OpenDNS account & registered your IP on that account. AKA follow the guides over a AFTVNews.com

yes i plan on doing that and also on blocking the update domains in my router too
i am just wondering why he would tell us to do something that is impossible to do
also i watched his video so if i do the unplug the cable bit then do i do it both times or just 1st time? there is 2 points where he says to kill the internet
nothing this guy says makes any god damn sense
1st thing he tells us to do is physically impossible the = watch his video
in his video he shows he already has a wifi connection setup and he lets it check for updates, then he does it again and says to kill the internet connection before it gets to the checking for updates step so which is it?let it go to check for updates or don;t let it go to check for updates? why does he do it twice?, i don't understand this **** at all ,
and people are reporting that blocking the updates in the router is not working so if i followed his guide i would be updated because he let it go to checking for updates and depended on router blocking which is reported as not reliable

I think your just misreading things. I base everything I do to my FTV(S)'s on AFTVNews.com guides. I just tweak things to fit my exact options. Elias knows what he is doing. And I completely trust him & his guides. There has been a bunch of changes the last week. But his guides have been updated & are still correct. I will try to explain the parts you are misreading. yeah i'm sure he know what he is doing but his video on preventing initial update was not good
i am about to say F it and give up my router sucks and website blocking is not working , never but linksys/ cisco they ripped me off and their product is awful
i never used blocking before but it does not work this is just too complicated to do i give up
F it i will just return it and buy an android box
i know nothing about networking and i HATE having to mess with my router and settings i never do and now i get in there and do everything i read to do and it does not block anything i put in there
i never used open DNS before either and do not know which IP i am supposed to link it to, home IP what is that? IP v4 , IPv6 where do i even get that? cmd , ipconfig?
i really know nothing about networking or routers or DNS
@gdroid666
AFTVNews guides are made for multiple devices @ different steps of the process. This might confuse some. But reviewing & asking ?'s should help those few.
Make sure you understand step by step what you are doing before getting started.
Don't get fixated on the video or anything you don't understand right now. You will get thru it.
No ? is a dumb ?. Even if you have to ask it dozens of time until you get an answer you understand.
Try to be as specific as possible so nothing falls thru the cracks.
All the info below has been glean from AFTVNews.com guides.
Your specific ? was how to block updates & root a FTVS that is NIB (New In Box).
Blocking updates thru the router is not dependable anymore. Amazon started to use HTTPS which most routers can not block.
Blocking updates thru the OpenDNS method is the only option to block updates before an FTVS ever goes online.
After blocking the updates thru OpenDNS then you block the update thru ADB. And that should get you set until there is a ROM for FTVS's. You can choose to root now or to wait.
All this steps have guides. And they are very easy to follow. I can do a breakdown for you if you want.
ok trying to setup an open DNS account but this guide leaves out tons of stuff it is asking me all kinds of stuff like what kinds of device, i picked router , what router , i picked my brand linksys, my model is not listed now it wants me to go into the router and put in all kinds of settings, etc etc etc do i have to do all of this i have no idea what i am doing here

Only follow the Method 4 Guide. You should be able to skip setting up your router info. And only setup the parts in the guide. And you shouldn't do any changes in your router. Actually setting up your router shouldn't be to difficult. And would give the best results. But IT IS NOT REQUIRED for the block to work. As long as your IP doesn't change constantly. And specially when your booting up the FTVS for the first time. Also finding your IP address is easy. You should be able to get it from https://dnsleaktest.com & from https://www.myip.ms & tons of other website. I only run on iPv4. So check to make sure what iPv your ISP runs on. And report back.

i don't know the guide is incomplete when i try and set up the account for open DNS the home one it says , it says i have to chose a device there are 4 options home router, computer workstations and laptops ,smart devices and servers
i chose home router (recommended)
then it asks what brand i pick my brand , linksys, then it asks what model , my model is not listed i pick generic configuration , then it says to go into router settings and enter these numbers/ addresses for static DNS 1 ,2, 3
i did that and saved the settings in my router then it says next test your new settings, but everytime i do it it just says failed and then loops me back to the pick device page again , one big loop i can not complete the open DNS registration setup , what do i do?

HBO Now Issue

Hi all,
I have a 2nd gen FireTV, live in the UK, and I'm trying to install HBO Now (I have a subscription). I found an apk for it (2.4.0) and it installs, but won't login. Lets me enter username and password, then just goes back to main screen.
I not 100% sure I have the right version for the FireTV
I have a US VPN connected, and have even tried a US DNS, to try to get the official app through the FireTV but with no luck.
Any ideas?

Thanks, that certainly looks like it's the right one.. But I get an error "you do not own this app"
It suggests the app store or underground, but I can't download officially as in UK
Any ideas?

You might need to use a VPN or IP changing app/servives to use a US IP to access content like US users need to. To access UK content thru the same services. I don't think HBO Now is available in any form in the UK. Also adding a US address to your Amazon account should help.

Thanks once again, instructions from 1st link worked perfectly!
The HBO Now link above worked but when I returned it was over-written by ver 2.5.0. Is there a way to protect an app from being overwritten?

Turn off Automatic Updates in the Applications section before installing an older version.
You will still get notifications for updates. You will then be able to manually choose to update or ignore them.

That worked. Blocked via ADB and my Router. Hasn't been over written yet. THANKS

For apps you must go to Settings/Applications/App store & turn "Automatic Updates" to "OFF".
