Kindle Fire HD 8.9 Issue
Question has to do with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011126
Downloaded and unzipped KFHD_SRTv2.1- 8.1.4 to my desktop.
With the Kindle OFF and plugged into, I ran the SR Tool.bat file. I selected option 1, it then ask me if the device on y/n; I selected N and hit enter. It just says waiting for device. I left it here for a while since the OP says to be patient. Nothing after 15 minutes.
I then tried the above with the Kindle ON and plugged in. Had a little success, but then gets stuck on the Waiting for Device. I have tried Option 1: fast boot, Option 2: Restore-su/Supersu.apk only, Option 4: Erase Cache and userdata. All options (whether Kindle is plugged in and ON or OFF), result is "Waiting for Device".
The kindle turns on, but the unlock screen is glitchy. When I do slide the lock screen open, all the app logos are gone, and it is very slow and unresponsive. I am still seeing my name at the top of the Kindle, it finds available WIFI networks, ADB and Allow 3rd Party Apps were allowed, and I can see it under Device Manager on my Windows 7 laptop.
Please help me restore this to factory conditions. Thank you for your help.

Device is running 8.5.1
Problems occurred when I tried to run the Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v31. Made sure the Kindle Fire ADB drivers were updated before I tried this. Plugged into computer and it recognized it. Once I launched the runme.bat file, I selected Option 1: New Standard Root.
Hope this helps give a little more info. Thanks again

most likely you need to install a driver when the device is in fastboot mode. For whatever reason there isn't a good method to root 8.5.1 as it results in slowness. You should be able to open a adb shell. You then have two options one is to do reboot bootloader which would place you into fastboot after that check in your system to see if you need to install a driver. Once in fastboot you could install an alternative rom. If all you want is to restore the other method is to run the command reboot recovery. At this point your device should go into factory recovery mode and you can then reset it. Hope this helps.

Dear friend. I took a step 3.) Erase userdata and cache-all. The computer does not see my KINDLE FIRE HD 8.9. At all. On the -kindlfire-but nothing more. What to do?

Q/A:
So way back when I bought my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 I decided to root it. Unfortunately I don't know which process I went through but once I had an issue with a google app, I decided to try to remove the root I had put on it. In the process I obviously messed something up as the kindle refuses to boot to anything but the Kindle Fire System Recovery. Even at this screen when I do "Reset to Factory Default" it simply reboots and comes to the same screen.
I'm interested in what steps I can do to either revive my Kindle or use it to boot another operating system. Anything to keep it from being a large paper weight! My preference would be to restore the kindle to "like new" from amazon so at least I can give it to my girlfriend for school/reading
Thanks for reading and any insight you all give
EDIT: Okay so I've been able to install Fastboot and ADB on my pc when using "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" it gives me a response of <waiting for device> then I reach over onto the kindle and tell it reboot and heres my result in my CMD window:
Jem-PVT-Prod-04
So it appears that I'm able to send/recieve information from my kindle.
Upon sending the command to get the product's information, It now has the Fastboot mode logo across the front, but still not recognized by ADB. Anyone have any ideas on the next step?

If it boots into recovery you should be able to use the srt (system recovery tool) to restore it to a stock os. You'll lose your apps and data in doing so though.

[Q] Kindle Fire Bricked & The Battery Is Now Dead

Alright, so my Kindle Fire is bricked, and was stuck at the boot screen (the default Kindle Fire loading screen) after attempting to root it with an outdated tutorial (didn't know this at the time, but the program is called SuperOneClick) then I made another foolish attempt to install TWRP (I THINK I did it to restore the Kindle back to the factory software/defaults but I'm not sure exactly what I was thinking as it was probably 2 weeks ago)... After doing a little more research, I made my way back here because the forums have been resourceful in the past concerning my Evo 4G... After that I found a very similar thread and decided to try my luck once again, had extreme problems trying to get my computer to recognize the Kindle (on both Windows 7 and Ubuntu), all of my settings were correct and are now correct to the best of my knowledge (adb/udev files included)... To this day I still have no luck getting my computer to recognize it, after reading through numerous tutorials/threads I've resorted to buying a "factory cable" because the battery died (while plugged in the wall/usb both it just flashed on and off) and I was told by another member here that it is the only way to bypass the dead battery... Yesterday I've received the "factory cable", but the Kindle still flashes on and off while it is plugged in via usb, and still doesn't show up in device manager, or in command prompt/terminal via adb devices/lsusb commands even after multiple restarts and adb kill-server, adb start-server have been applied... Can anybody help guide me through this??? My faith is running extremely dry at this point, and I'm willing to try just about anything to get this thing right, and learn a few things in the process!!!
Thanks in Advance,
CJ
Firekit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430038
I will help you
And you have done sooo much!!! I've spent a total of at least 12 hours trying to figure this thing out, and getting the terminal to recognize it CORRECTLY is the furthest I've seen so far, even if it was for only one command, for a few seconds... My charging attempt has yet again failed miserably, BUT I have however bypassed the boot loop for about 30 seconds, still staying at the default Kindle Fire screen (tried a random tutorial to trick the Kindle into charging, it MIGHT have worked because it was only plugged in via usb for about 1 minute after this trick but instead of the orange light coming on the Kindle just stayed in the power off looking state)... Even with the boot loop bypassed though, fk did not seem to recognize the device so I'm even more lost than I was originally lol...
EDIT: I am positive the Kindle is receiving a charge, the charge light isn't on BUT it is charging!!! Regardless of the power state no command is working to recognize the device, including "adb devices", "lsusb", and "fastboot getvar product"... I guess that it's possible that one of my files have gone corrupt so I'll check them out again but other than that I'm stumped...
After many trial and error's, and with the amazing guidance of "Thepooch", we have finally unbricked the KF!!! Thank you for your time and patience, if it wasn't for you I would've probably given up by now
Great Job Pooch! You da' man. Glad you got it working!
Was an adventure your welcome though

Bricked Kindle Fire
I was having trouble using KFU. I wanted to install JellyBean 4.1 and after finding a post to perform some command lines the KFU finally found my KF. I installed the permanent root (i thought) and it rebooted the KF into fastboot it stated. Now it loads to a logo and stops. If I hold the power button (5-10 secs) it shuts off and that is the only thing I can do. It does not show up in my device manager so I feel I killed it. I know you guys have the answer and I apologize in advanced for being a newbie but I am desperate. It looked so easy in the YouTube videos but as always that is the famous last words...

Pooch thank you buddy very much!! I thought I owned a black brick. Now with that newbie mess out of the way could you help with what went wrong using KFU? It would not find my KF and only when I found something about typing in some command lines (similar to your fix) did KFU finally state the KF was online. I then chose option 2 used the permanent root function and viola a brick. I of course followed all the previous directions about loading drivers and making sure the ADB composite was in the device manager. Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks again...

If your main intent is to flash a ROM no need to root simply just allow installation from unknown sources under device in your kindle settings when you plug it it disconnect the USB transfer app. Then select option for twrp it should reboot then swipe open and stop USB app again this time send fff. Then use the boot loader to enter recovery when there select backup make a backup that you will later name noroot631 without spaces after you have created a backup reboot to os then use the USB app to place a ROM zip and a gapp zip on your SD card but do not place it inside of a folder this is considered the root of your sdcard then boot back into recovery . Go to install make sure you can locate the files you intend to flash then use the back button or home button in upper right to return to twrp main screen. At this point you have a safety net and a backup and you are getting familiar with the functions and learning how to navigate in twrp. Now for a flash if you are gonna flash modaco for the stock like adventure its not required to perform any wipes just simply flash and reboot. No gapps required either now you are rooted If you intend to flash a different flavor like cm7 cm9 or jelly bean it gets a bit more technical . After placing ROM and appropriate gapps on your SD card this time your gonna wipe and its very important you do so!!! First go and wipe factory reset then wipe cache then wipe dalvik here's the scary part wipe system do not reboot you have no system!! There is no need to wipe sdcard or external storage as it is called in the new twrp if you did you would have nothing to flash then hit the home button above right taking you back to the twrp main screen this time select install tap on the ROM zip swipe to install then home again install again this time select gapps swipe to install select reboot and system if prompted. It will reboot initial boot takes time I would say 5-8 mins longer and then you need to be a little alarmed If your greeted by an android for account setup your good congrats your rooted. If boot takes longer than 10 mins hold power button return to recovery restore your backup after the wipes I mentioned above try again later with new ROM and new gapps. Good luck as for kfu awhhh so many things broken for so many people near impossble to say why so many fail to root frankly operator error accounts for at least 80% of failures could be more like 90% . Common mistakes thinking you need to root to flash a ROM, bad drivers windows is terrrrrible, wrong cable, using a 3.0 USB port instead of 2.0, and general miscommunication between the device your computer and the utility. Whewwww all that said install twrp install fff if you can 100% verify that you have both and you know how to use both and move files to your SD card and have made a backup every time before you flash. Then flash Awaaaayyy!!! Hope I didnt miss anything oh and the usual disclaimer know what your doing or you shoot your eye out lol and of course I'm not responsible if you brick your kindle!! Good luck

PS as well after creating the huge safety net I explained above go ahead after your backup and select permanent root with superuser you have a backup and a bootloder that resets your boot mode have it but IMO that function is broken for too many people these days I don't recommend it because if our gonna flash a ROM all ROMs are rooted so what's the point?

So that's probably why I bricked my kindle was due to using a 3.0 port. I don't see how that would affect it though. Either way, I'm trying to charge up the battery on my kindle some since it drained itself to dead over night when I gave up in frustration and went to sleep. Then I'm going to try to unbrick using your methods mentions above and on the first page. If none work you'll be hearing from me again. lol
Well switching to the USB 2 and those commands through dos worked perfectly. Now if only it would download the twrp file. Just can't get a break with this stupid thing.

where are the simple, easy to follow directions...
to root my Kindle..
All this stuff is overwhemingly confusing for a non-computer speaking person..
I tried to follow the directions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452
but got really confused.
So I read through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889 and got even more confused.
I've rooted my Samsung Galaxy SII, but that used a simple one-click process. Trying to decipher the procedures for rooting a kindle fire is confusing to say the least.
Im begining to think that my stock Kindle is ok...
I'd just assume ship my KF off to someone to root it and install a custom ROM.. i've been reading these threads and forums for 3 days now and I just keep spinning myself in circles...

Stuck in boot loop after failed root.

i was curious to get get android market on my kindle today.. and looked up how. i used the kindle fire utility to root it. then my KF it started to go into a loop of the boot logo. it just flashes on and flashes off over and over again.hard reset doesnt affect it at all, it wont even turn off unless i unplug it. it doesnt show up on my computer either.
i dont know if this helps but when i ran the Kf utility it said 'findstr' not recognized.. blah blah blah. and it didnt give me the 1234567 options on there. i just typed in '2' and pressed enter because thats what the video told me .-. it doesnt have a triangle, or a blue screen logo either just the kindle fire logo flashing off and on. I honestly am lost. please keep this noob friendly
i am running win 7. 64 bit.

It seems like your stuck in fastboot mode. You need to reinstall the drivers manually and then go into KFU. Press 1(bootmode)and 1(normal). If you still want to root it, when it gets to installing fff, and if it says <waiting for device>, you need to do a hard reset and your Kindle, unplug, plug it back in, and manually install the drivers. Then it will finish rooting.

How do you reinstall the drivers manually? and also when i go into the kindle fire utility it doesnt give me 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 options... it just says findstr is not a recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. and another thing i tried another utility on here and it said it said my device was not found when i plugged it in , is it because it turns off every 5 seconds?
First before you mess with your drivers shift+ right click on the tools folder in kfu select open command window here power your device off completely leave it unplugged type fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product when it says waiting for device plug in your powered off kindle it should then power on in fastboot mode if you get the response product: kindle then type fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000 it will say okay hopefully the type fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot it should then reboot in normal mode
Edit: hit enter after each command

Sounds like there's some sort of PATH problem with your setup, which is why KFU won't work properly. You'll have to manually use ADB/fastboot commands if you want to get things done.
About it turning off constantly, it's probably out of battery. Use the stock wall charger (it provides a greater power output, don't bother with USB or a random clone) so it can refill some. The bootloops may be due to a bad boot mode, but it's a bit hard to pinpont with your description of the issue.
You may want to have a read here, it'll help you to better understand what's going on and how to express yourself about the problems you are experiencing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547

You might have corrupt drivers. Here's how to reinstall them:
Try going to your Control Panel >> Device Manager. If you see an entry for "Android Phone," (Android ADB interface) delete it (and any associations with Portable Devices >> KF or Kindle Fire).
Restart computer.
Then go to your KFU utility folder, open "install_drivers.bat" (right-click "Run Administrator"). This shouldn't take long at all.
You might want to restart here too after.
Then open KFU utility, plug in Kindle - if all went well here, you should read something along the lines of "Online" and "4000".
I am a similar situation
Hi Guys,
I rooted my KF with no issues, was able to copy the Jellybean and Gapp zip file to the SD and thought I flashed with no issues. Then rebooted. Now the KF is stuck in a boot loop. If I boot to recovery, that works and allows me the recovery options. if I boot up to normal, it constantly reboots, if I boot to fastboot, it displays the Kindle Fire logo and says "press power button to boot menu" at the bottom and does nothing else. My computer recognizes it as Android ADB interface but will not allow to access the SD ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's usually better to start your own thread here on Q&A.
Are you able to access the SD Card from TWRP? (Mount USB)
If so and the ROM is still in there, wipe cache, dalvik-cache, factory reset and system, then flash/install the ROM again (don't install gapps yet) and reboot. If it boots all the way to the desktop, reboot to recovery and install gapps.
You may also want to check the ROM's hash.
You haven't mentioned what versions of TWRP and FFF do you have, either. Hopefully 2.1.1 or 2.2 for TWRP and 1.4a (blue "fire" on the kindle fire logo) for FFF.

Thanks for the info and sorry for the incomplete initial info. I will check this as soon as I get home and can work on it again.
Thanks for your help. It turns out that I didnt even have TWRP installed. Thats fixed. I was able to get roms installed and have different problems. (Will start a new thread in another area) Thank you very much for your help.

[Q] Bricked KF2 - no OS, fastboot & TWRP available

I've read through hundreds of similar threads and haven't been able to find a solution - I'll gladly give up my firstborn (and/or make a paypal donation) to anyone who is able to help solve my issue!!
From my research, I seem to have no OS installed on the Kindle, and as far as I can tell, I'm booting into fastboot mode (screen hangs on the blue/white Kindle Fire logo, screen does not ever dim). I AM able to access TWRP Recovery, but don't have any backup to load from, am unable to successfully flash the ROM that I have saved to my SD card. My device manager recognizes the Kindle as a Kindle Fire (Android ADB Interface), no yellow triangles. Typing ADB Devices into Command Prompt gets me: [device number ] offline. Typing fastboot devices into Command Prompt gets me nothing (blank line).
Background/How I 'Bricked' It: I have a Kindle Fire 2 and was able to successfully unroot/flash Cyanogenmod 10 onto it. Worked perfectly for about 6 months, when I decided that it would be a good idea to flash back to stock so that I could give it to a relative. I have TWRP 2.3.3.0, so I used a guide on xda to do the following:
I used a guide from xda and followed these instructions
-Download latest KF2 stock software from amazon. Re-name the file to update.zip
-Moved it to the root of the SD card
-Booted in to TWRP
-Factory Wipe/Restore
-Wiped Cache
-Wiped Dalvik Cache
-Wiped System
-Installed the "update.zip"
-Wiped cache/dalvik again
-Rebooted
Unfortunately, wiping the system seems to have wiped the CM10 OS (ROM) that I had installed, and there was a failure in installing the amazon stock:
Installing '/sdcard/download/update.zip...
assert failed: is_substring ("Otter2 , file_getstring("/proc/product_name"))
E: Error in /sdcard/download/update.zip
(Status 7)
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/download/update.zip'
Updating partition details...
Trying to reboot the system from TWRP results in a message that states: "No OS installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?"
Investigating using ADB: So it looks like I have no OS on the Kindle Fire 2. This seems to be a problem because without an OS, I am unable to use adb (from what I've read, no OS = no way to accept/authenticate the computer RSA fingerprint to whitelist the kindle and allow adb to function). Trying to use KFU, KFFirstAide, or the Kindle UnBrick Utility results in Error: Device offline or Error: Device not found types of messages (I am assuming due to the fact that I can't "turn" adb on by accepting the RSA fingerprint prompt)
What does Device Manager tell me? My computer can 'see' the Kindle Fire in device manager [as I stated earlier: My device manager recognizes the Kindle as a Kindle Fire (Android ADB Interface), no yellow triangles] but going to My Computer and looking under mass storage devices, the computer doesn't seem to recognize the device as a USB storage device, which is a problem because I can't drag/drop or push/pull files to the SD card so I can't try to flash anything *other* than the original file that failed.
Fastboot Mode...? From what I can tell (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668159), my device is in fastboot mode. My Kindle screen hangs on the blue/white Kindle Fire logo screen, which from what I understand is hashcode's bootloader/fastboot screen. However, when I look at the Hardware IDs in the device manager, it tells me that my hardware IDs are:

So...my kindle seems to be stuck on the blue/white fastboot screen, but register on my computer as the stock kindle fastboot? I'm not really sure what's going on there, and couldn't find too many people with the same discrepancy that I have...
I tried plugging in my cord (making sure to use a USB 2.0 port), going into Command Prompt and using some fastboot commands. (ie: fastboot flash bootloader \path\update.zip) but all I get is a <waiting for device> for a LONG time. As in, a few hours. Some basic googling/investigation seems to indicate that I don't have fastboot drivers installed, OR that I wasn't running fastboot in an 'elevated mode' but I haven't been able to find too many details about how to fix those, IF that is the problem.
TWRP 2.3.3.0: I can get into TWRP recovery just fine, although I can't seem to figure out how to get files onto my device. So I've tried re-installing the original update.zip file that failed the first time several times, with no success. trying to 'Mount' the device doesn't seem to do anything (at least, my computer doesn't see the device as USB storage regardless of whether it's mounted or not) I tried using Advanced --> ADB Sideload, but trying to send the file in Command Prompt using the adb sideload <filename> command just gets me an Error: Device not Found message. I thought maybe I could try Advanced --> Terminal Command, but have no idea how to do that or what it does, and most sites are very vague about the step-by-step details, so I didn't really touch it.
Not sure if this is relevant or not, but when my KF2 is plugged into (attached) to my computer with the cord and is in TWRP, device manager shows the device under 'Other Devices' --> Amazon Kindle Fire2, and there is a yellow triangle on it. Not sure why...going back to 'fastboot' mode gets rid of yellow triangles and is recognized as a Kindle Fire again.
At this point - I'm pretty much stumped and have (hopefully) demonstrated that I've done my best to do my own research/read through threads/done due diligence. Is there anyone out there that might have any suggestions? Or do I now have a very large paperweight?
ANY input/suggestions/encouragement is welcome! I absolutely and sincerely appreciate your time in reading through this thread and trying to help noobs like me!
Use fast boot mode to recover to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888
Or
If you have access to twrp. Use the ADb sideload feature to push CyanogenMod or another ROM over.
One thing though- if you can boot into TWRP you didn't wipe the system partition. Twrp for kf2 requires a file named stack to be there.

...tried those, but maybe am doing them incorrectly?

Trying to use the ADB sideload feature to push CM or another ROM over doesn't seem to be working for me (unless I'm doing it wrong?)
I tried using Advanced --> ADB Sideload, but trying to send the file in Command Prompt using the "adb sideload C:\users\Name\update.zip command just gets me an Error: Device not Found message". Could I be using the command incorrectly?
Trying to use any fastboot command in Windows Command Prompt results in <waiting for device> to hang for hours, with no changes to command prompt and no changes to the kindle (still sits at the blue/white boot logo).
Ah. Sorry. Missed that in the OP.
Sounds like you probably need the drivers installed.

Are there difference drivers for fastboot and adb? I don't get a 'yellow triangle' and my device manager identifies the device as a Kindle Fire [Android ADB Interface], so I thought I was okay.
Should I be looking for fastboot drivers?
And btw, thanks so much for your willingness to help and input!
ME TOO
Just purchased a KF from someone...thay had rooted it...I tried to unroot...got stuck...now mine is doing the same as yours. I hope someone has a fix for you as I too have a large paperweight.

Typing fastboot devices into Command Prompt gets me nothing (blank line).

tessa33,
I just sent you a response. Call me at 707-774-5923 when you have a moment.
Solution?
I figured I could post in this thread before staring my own because I am having a very similar issue trying to revert my Kindle Fire 2 back to stock from cyanogen so I can sell it. I downloaded the official software from Amazon but every time I try to flash it through TWRP I get the exact same error you were getting. Did anyone ever figure out how to resolve the issue for you?
Had the same problem, so I chatted with an Amazon associate, told him I turned it on one day and it showed the grey triangle and he sent me a new Kindle Fire 2nd Gen for free. Try that...

[Q] Attempted to load android and failed

Hello,
Without beating myself up, here is what I did:
1. used steps from another site to root my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and attempt to load Android 4.4.2 on it. First major mistake.
2. during that process, the steps to make a backup didn't work and I continued. I realize that was my second major mistake, one from which I cannot recover.
3. attempted to use a Factory Image found on this site. I followed the steps, and when I perform the "fastboot -i 0x1949" reboot command, I get the "kindle fire" orange logo, and it sits there. I'm guessing it's bricked.
4. without giving up, I attempted to follow the commands found on this site here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175), but I've been unsuccessful.
So, I'm stuck looking at the "kindle fire" orange logo. My thoughts were to get an image on the device and boot into it to at least get all the necessary files for flashing the image. Nope. I would appreciate any assistance. I will also state that I am a very fresh NooB when it comes to these things. I thought I was prepared, but I guess not enough.
TIA!

if you never installed the fastboot drivers that would explain the issue. when the kindle first turns on after you plug it in while off, it should briefly be detected as a jem device in the device manager. if it already has the drivers installed it will briefly show up as a adb device. if you don't have the drivers installed then grab the ones from mg SIG and extract them somewhere and point the update driver box to it in the few seconds it is detected. once it is installed power the kindle off! run the "fastboot -I 0x1949 getvar product" and when it says waiting for device, plug in the kindle while it is off, it should go into fastboot.

OK. I followed your instructions and installed the driver. I then attempted to install a base image following the instructions here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011126
I chose the following prompts: 1. enable fastboot, then 2. Restore-su/supersu.apk only, then 4. Erase cache and userdata, and finally Reboot normally. No luck.
I'd really appreciate any and all ideas/help. My hope is to turn this brick into something productive again.
What are you using to restore the kindle?

All I have are whatever people have shared. As mentioned in my initial post, I do not have a backup of what I had before I started. Perhaps my biggest mistake. My understanding is that I need to get the Kindle software back on it in order to install the Android bits. Perhaps I am in error on that thinking. Please let me know if that is an unneeded step.
Use either kindle fire first aid or system restore tool and stay away from kindle fire utility unless you want a paperweight.

Kindle Fire 8.9 HD Bricked? Boots to System Recovery

I don't have a "fastboot" cable that I keep seeing on forums, so I can still go try and retrieve one of those. But I'm interested in what steps I can do to either revive my Kindle or use it to boot another operating system. Anything to keep it from being a large paper weight!
Edit #2: So I found another user one here say to use the command: "fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme boot mode 1" which allowed my kindle to boot through to the operating system! Hooray!!! The only small issue is that now periodically my top bar with Time/Battery/options disappears and I have to wait for it to come back before opening the system settings. In the "About" Im running 8.4.3_user_4308820 if that helps.
I see that theres been about 45 people view my question, If there's ANYTHING you can think of to help me. please let me know. I'm in a standstill with this perma-recovery boot kindle..
