You can flash ROMs, but only 4.4.2 based ones as you have old firmware. It will break your wifi if you try to flash 4.4.3/4.4.4 Roms.
First use this guide to get ADB working on windows 8.1
Then get Sunshine S-Off. You'll need it to update your firmware to run newer 4.4.4 ROMs, and can only do that with an OTA or S-Off. You can find it with Google. It cost $25, but is totally worth it. And if it doesn't work, you don't pay.
After that, update your firmware. If you need help with that, quote me here with a reply, and I'll help to guide you along.

The thing is whats the point of having an android if i have to pay for a certain thing
when i bought my phone its bootloader was unlocked and the S-ON had a TWRP installed in it, clearly shows the previous owner effed it up i've no idea why.I'd try to make my adb work first if it works there is another way to S-OFF something called waterwork dont know for sure it require adb to work if there is anything else u can share to help I'd be thankful

Maybe the developers felt the same way. What's the point of spending countless hours and many bricked devices(thousands of dollars) to give S-OFF to people that probably don't even know what to do with it, for free ?

You have two choices that I know of. Pay $25, or remain S-On. The choice is yours.
HTC patched the Firewater exploit, so it won't work. Sunshine is made by the same team, and with all the time and effort they put into it, $25 isn't too much to ask for.
But there is a way to get it for free, you are correct.
Find the exploits on your own and develop your own S-Off method.

Are you kidding? You don't NEED s-off, so don't get it. Stick with the 4.4.2 ROMs. Or, pony up the money, stop being so cheap, and run the newest ROMs. It's really that simple.
If you expect people to work for you for free, then come over to my place. I have some leaves that need raking, and I expect to pay you nothing to do it..
Anyways, I'm glad you got ADB working. :good:

I copied and pasted this from Sunshine's website. Maybe it will help you understand why it isn't free:
"Simply put, it isn't free. SunShine is the cumulation of years of research, hundreds of hours of development, the sacrifice of many devices (R.I.P. bricked test phones), and the blood, sweat and tears of multiple developers. Just like how a mechanic charges money for his time souping up your car, the only feasible way to devote the time and energy to this is to charge for it. The income from SunShine allows us to recoup the time lost from other projects, to invest more time into research and development of new solutions, purchase new test hardware, and to allow us to enjoy a few bottles of wine at the end of a hard week.
Well crud, how much are you asking for?
The initial price of SunShine is set at $25.00usd per device, payable via paypal or credit-card from within the application itself. Our hopes are that SunShine is successful enough to allow us to find or purchase vulnerabilities, and to develop future solutions at lower prices. If you want to see additional payment options become available, let us know in support!
Are you crazy $25?!?
You may be right. We may be crazy. Considering our costs to develop SunShine, we feel we are justified. Most of our customers purchased heavily subsidized devices, instead of opting for a more developer friendly product. SunShine solves that situation, at a much lower cost than purchasing a developer device."

The question is pretty much straight
Why does HTC S-On the devices when they allow us to unlock bootloader?
HTC says that the main idea of unlocking bootloader is that you can unleash our own phone.
Why can't they just S-OFF the devices when unlocking the bootloader ?
Can anyone fill me in
Thanks

S-off opens up access to pretty much everything and so allows more control. With that are the risks of totally bricking your device. Staying S-on still gives you some protection from mucking things up and the freedom to flash roms/recoveries/kernels.
I agree though, as people are responsible for their actions and so must know the consequences of modding their devices, they should just give another level of access to remove s-off. The warranty is void once you unlock the bootloader anyway.
More info around s-off/NAND/partitions etc:

You can still unleash some of your phone by just unlocking, which is probably why they gave the option. You can still flash a custom recovery, you can still root, you can still flash custom ROMs.
S-OFF you can flash different firmwares, you can resize partitions, you can convert to other models. Why would the majority want these? And by the looks of some of these threads, why would even some of the majority of "flashers" need it? Root + Custom Recovery + Custom ROM should be enough to satisfy most.
S-ON then just protects the phone from more serious changes that might lead to more serious damage if *you* don't know what *you're* doing.

When you are S-on/BL locked, your carrier (or HTC/Google) is your system administrator. The carriers take this a bit further, and even manage some of your apps. In a lot of ways, you are a guest on the system, even though you "own" it. However, assuming you just want to use it to make phone calls and post to facebook, for most people this is fine. (my wife's phone isn't even rooted)
When you are BL unlocked, you take over some parts of that sysadmin job, and can now replace parts of the operating system and manage your own apps. You can also disable external control of your device by rooting and turning off certain services. However, the truly critical stuff, the stuff that could keep your phone from booting, are outside of your control. You are now no longer a guest, but you aren't exactly an owner either.
When you S-off, you are taking on the job of being the system administrator entirely. You are 100% responsible for what happens to your phone. Your '44, your Magnum rounds, your foot. Be careful.

If anything better comes up, I will try sunshine

But @BerndM14 don't you think HTC should have asked to you choose S-On or S-OFF when unlocking the bootloader or so ?

You wont' hear any arguments from me about that, I've made a post about that ages ago in which I stated that manufacturers should give you the option to have your phone rooted, unlocked and in HTC's case S-OFF, if it's a warranty issue then why not just a bit more for warranty purposes, but we still need the choice. Will they ever do something like that? I doubt they'll do anything like that any time soon but it would be nice and I've said so a long time ago already.
Especially as far as development on the devices are concerned. I don't see why they would share the Kernel source to allow developers to develop for the phone while at the same time expecting the developer to just hack away at the device in order to get the necessary permissions to develop for the device!

Thank the GPL for that last one. Android is essentially a very custom distro of Linux, and the Linux community has already shown that they will go after violators. It's how the Linksys WRT54G became the WIFI router to own. IOW, they release it because they have to, but they don't have to make it easy, or usable.
We have seen with the Samsung and LG devices that it is possible to lock down a device fully such that it won't boot anything that isn't cryptographically signed. They will do as little as necessary to comply with the license, without giving us the ability to actually use that knowledge. After all, what good is kernel source if you don't have a signing key the CPU will accept?
That is the primary reason I chose the M8. It was one of the few flagship phones that is still able to be fully owned.
I have searched and been unable to find answers, least ones that account for changes over time. So if I have overlooked the obvious then my apologies.
I am looking to upgrade to a m7, hopefully as soon as tomorrow. Being able to root is not negotiable. So what I am wanting to know, are there any set of circumstances which would render a device unable to be rooted? I have no issue with requirements of downgrading firmware, or anything such as that, wouldn't be the first time. Simply want to ensure that nothing exists which can't be worked around.
Thanks
Make sure it is on current firmware and pay for Sunshine. Older method 'firewater' got discontinued, so Sunshine is the only method for recent firmwares. It is still unknown if sunshine will not work for 5.0 but we have a little time before that update hits.

As @Uzephi said, you'll have to pay the$25 to get S-off from Sunshine, but believe me, it's well worth it. With Sunshine, all m7's are currently root-able.
Thanks for the great information. Especially when u are looking at additional costs above purchase of the device.. Hopefully everything will go go smoothly with the transaction and will be a member of new community very soon.

FIX HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64932229&postcount=11
Got a dev edition phone.
Absolutely F'ing HATE(!!!) Sense and can't even tell if the phone is working properly with all the HTC crap.
Therefore: I want to install a custom AOSP/CM ROM.
1. Bootloader is unlocked as far as I can tell:
*** UNLOCKED ***
htc_himaulatt PVT S-ON
LK-1.0.0.000
RADIO-01.01_U11440792_97.00.51203G_F
OpenDSP-15.6.1.00522.8994_1026
OS-3.36.617.12
Dec 16 2015,15:16:29(669696)
2. Installed TWRP (works fine and can boot into it)
3. Install SuperSU 2.49 (TWRP never asked me though)
4. Backup
5. Reboot
... and now the phone first shows HTC, then HTC One, and then it is stuck on the HTC One logo ... gets really hot and just sits there doing nothing.
6. Tried installing CandySix (don't want the #@$%#@$% stock ROM anyhow):
- wipe dalvik, cache, system, factory reset
- install ROM
- install GAPPS
7. Reboot
... and now the phone first shows HTC, then HTC One, and then it is stuck on the HTC One logo ... gets really hot and just sits there doing nothing.
8. Restore Backup
... and now the phone first shows HTC, then HTC One, and then it is stuck on the HTC One logo ... gets really hot and just sits there doing nothing.
WTF?
I am starting to already dislike this piece of junk.
How can I fix this?
And BTW, what is that BS with S-OFF suddenly costing money and a developer phone not being S-OFF already?
Did you use TWRP 2.8.7.1-CPTB-Beta-1? Did you not allow TWRP to root the rom when you exited it?
I assume your backup doesn't work because you used the wrong SuperSU version. You can only root Android M with SuperSU 2.64 or 2.65. (Keyword: system-less root)
The dev phone never was S-OFF. It's defined by the pre-unlocked bootloader. And Sunshine costs money because of all the investments the devs had. But if you have a problem with that you can develope your own S-OFF method and contribute it for free or you can talk to the Sunshine devs in their thread. I know that they're willing to make Sunshine a free app if someone takes over all the costs they're facing.

TWRP never asked me about rooting.
Installed SuperSU version 2.49 since I saw that being recommended (downloaded through the Toolkit).
So how do I fix this?
I seem to be unable to boot into the stock/backup nor a flashed ROM. WTF?
If I had known this BS about S-OFF I would have stuck to my mantra to never buy another HTC phone. Seems like I was right. This is such BS. Plenty of devs risk (lose) devices to development.
I have donated before but charging for something like this is just low!

That's why I reccomend not using toolkits. Version 2.49 is perfect for Lollipop but not for Marshmallow. I assume the toolkit developer didn't update it in a while. Besides you still didn't answer my question about the installed TWRP version.
Take a look at my thread. There you will find a stock backup for your version. Instructions how to correctly restore it can be found in my google sheet which is linked in the 5th post of that thread and in my signature.
As said before go and talk to the Sunshine devs this is not the right place for this topic. I'm sure that they will explain their reasons to you because you're not the first who has a problem with that decision. S-OFF is not needed if you want to use a HTC phone. Their devices do work perfectly fine without it and there is no basic right for a free S-OFF method. So please stop that topic in this forum because it has been discussed numerous times and it's getting exhausting and annoying.

Rather than complaining, maybe it would be worthwhile to actually read up on what the developer version of the M9 is, and what you are able to do with S-ON, and what you are not able do. jcase and Flippy498 has pretty much explained most of it for you already.

So after playing around with any possible combination of flashing, here is the fix:
1. Flash the ROM
2. Flash Gapps
3. Flash a Kernel!!!!!!
Without #3, no ROM worked for me on S-ON.
So: should I have charged for this bit of troubleshooting like the sunshine devs? I wasted probably close to 15 hours on this. Since you are so concerned about justifying the efforts of people (and their right to pay for it), how about sending me $25 so that I can pay for S-OFF?

If you spent $10,000s and years of your life to research and develop it, yes by all means charge for it. Why should I pay for you to have s-off? Here is an idea, why dont you develop a solution for free and release it to everyone?
I am a one of the SunShine developers, I am one of the guys that spent years of time, and way too much of my money to develop it.

I'm willing to release for free, if you want to take financial responsibility for the project.
My morals are that I should pay for my own, and shouldn't act entitled and demand others pay for my wants.

It looks like this thread has run its course.
Bottom line:
If you want S-OFF, pay for it. (It's only a small fraction of the cost of the M9.) If you don't want it, then don't. S-OFF isn't needed to flash ROMs and you are certainly not entitled to it, particularly for free.
Next time, before purchasing a device, verify that it comes the way you want it -- don't assume. Generally speaking, HTC devices have never shipped S-OFF, be they developer editions, unlocked editions or carrier versions.
Thread closed.
Hi guys. I purchased this phone used. IDK if it will have Android 6 or 7 installed on it. I know that it's supposed to be carrier unlocked. My goal is to get this rooted and get TWRP so I can install ViperRom.
Do these steps still apply:
1) Unlock your phone with htcdev.com or s-off it with sunshine http://theroot.ninja (using built in temproot)
2) flash latest twrp from http://twrp.me
3) Using adb, in twrp run - adb shell "echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.supersu"
4) flash latest supersu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps...v2-05-t2868133
My understanding is that the Verizon variant would require SunShine app (regardless of whether I'm on Android 6 or 7) and I can't use HTCdev to unlock the bootloader. Can someone please advise what my best course of action is to get TWRP and a custom rom on this thing?

Verizon disables oem unlocking, so you'd need to S-off your device to do any sort of tinkering. From there you won't need to unlock the bootloader, s-off allows you to do everything you need. With that said, if the phone is on Nougat, the only way to s-off is to mail your device to the Sunshine dev. The app won't work for you in that case. If on Marshmallow, you can use the app.
Step 2 is correct, and I don't think you need to step 3 anymore. Just flash whichever rom you need, and they are already rooted so no need to install supersu separately.
Leedroid and ViperROM are probably the most popular Sense-based roms, each with lots of customization options.

I have a bad phone obsession. I'm probably downgrading anyway (on Xiaomi Mi Mix) If the phone I purchased is on Nougat I'm going to sell it. Only paid $250 for it so I can probably make a small profit

$250? If it's in good condition that's a steal. At that price it's definitely worth paying the extra shipping cost to send the phone to s-off. Those guys are pretty trustworthy if that's something you're worried about.
Fantastic well rounded device if you decide to keep it.

Hey, one question I forgot to ask...
So I need SunShine for S-Off but can I keep the phone S-On and use HTC Dev method so I can still get TWRP?

No that's what I meant by "verizon disables oem unlocking". HTC Dev unlock = oem unlock = unlocking the bootloader
With the Verizon 10, the only way to flash twrp or anything else is to have s-off. On non-verizon devices, you'd be able to do what you asked.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I assumed that. Looking forward to getting this today and comparing it to my Mi Mix. Always liked HTC phones
Please help, I am coming from t mobile to verizon.. and need to buy a phone in the next day or two. I am at a lose to which to buy. If I purchase the HTC 10, what is S - off and what would it entail. I am stuck getting a verizon, in your opinion, which phone should I purchase thats root-able.

Are you interested in tinkering with your phone, installing different software on it? If the answer is no, just go to Verizon and buy the 10 or whichever phone you want.
Edit: Just saw that you want to root.
The situation with the Verizon 10 is described in this thread. If you want to root the thing, you absolutely need S-off ("security off"). If the phone you receive is on Nougat, you have to mail it in for S-Off for 25$. If on marshmallow, you can do it via an app that also costs 25$.

So this may be the one I'll enjoy the most, 25 dollars for s-off wont hurt me that much. I have to get my phone from Verizon and tinkering with it often is kind of my thing. I appreciate your input, So far this sounds like what I'm looking for. thanks again.

No problem, for S-Off the app is called Sunshine, you can go on their website and get support there. The same guys will do it by mail in.
Verizon HTC 10 Root Updates?
Hello,
Newb here...new to Androids and new to looking into rooting/tinkering with ROMs. Is there any update on the current state of rooting the Verizon variant of this great phone? I'm on Nougat 7.0 (2.41.605.20) and I am using the phone on the AT&T Network  I am; however, not happy with the issues with 4G lte that the newest 2.41.xxx is causing. I am wanting to flash Viper 10; as I understand it really optimizes this phone well.
I really do not want to S-Off (I am an Information Security Professional and this speaks against the principles I work by  . Do we know of any way to do this other than sending it to Sunshine? There has to have been some strides in the past 3 1/2 months, right?
Thanks

There's no way to root or flash roms besides getting S-OFF.

Your best bet would be to get SOFF, convert it to the us unlocked version, then put it back to SON, then you'll have newer software/firmware, and have the security re-enabled

Ok...so either way; I'm looking at having to S-Off with Sunshine, then I can do the conversion from Verizon --> US Unlocked as you stated. Do you know if this alone (converting to US Unlocked) will correct the 4G lte issues that the 2.41.xxx has caused with this model? Or...would you recommend that I go ahead and flash Viper 10 ROM?
Thank you and cnat for the responses

It can only help, Verizon is behind the game with software/firmware. I would recommend the swap if you plan on using a GSM carrier long term. Plus you can then flash viper on top of it.

So I came across a couple of articles that said using "Xposed Installer" could be used to flash a new ROM instead of Rooting my device. Do you, or anyone else have any experience with Xposed Installer on the HTC 10?

In order to use Xposed you have to be rooted. Also, at least official Xposed doesn't work on Nougat yet although someone made a modified unofficial version so that it would on some devices.
Okay guys apparently I'm too much of the little guy to post this in the dev part. However, I did a search and came accross an eng bootloader or what claims to be for the galaxy s10+. I'm not sure as to the legitimacy of this file, but figured it was worth putting out there. I helped or tried to help when the S8 came out as well. Anyway once I get it uploaded somewhere, I will post the file.
Okay just an FYI this is said to be the eng bootloader from PakFirmware and said to be for G975U
Bootloader filehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1c3gDQ6vi99NsRS3cZzVkR2C_vzNIPL-s/view?usp=drivesdk
Bootloader RAR filehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1wG1d0eK6hBnL6-N1SimEIwvKiC2G8YcY/view?usp=drivesdk
If anyone is curious as to where the file came from it was from herehttps://www.google.com/amp/s/pakfirmware.com/2019/02/samsung-s10-sm-g975u-eng-boot-file/amp/
Here is the link to the combination from file with supposed eng bootloader included https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XeL8KfP255QJD0Txv5B79Edneb4SEaY-/view?usp=drivesdk
First of all, I bet you $20 right now it's not, it's just the same combination boot file that comes in every single combination rom.
Second of all, even if it is and I am wrong, it won't help as you won't be able to boot it. Samsung phones require special certificates to allow them to boot eng firmware, and those certificates essentially oem unlock the device anyway. I know this because I have an s8+ that happens to possess one. But before you ask, the certificates are tied cryptographically to the imei and did numbers of the device they are issued for, so finding one for another device won't help you
As has been stated ad nauseum, the USA Samsung devices aren't rootable anymore. People who want rooted Samsungs should purchase the exynos (SM-G975F/D), or international snapdragon (SM-G9750) models
While the above may be true, I was merely trying to help and by no means am I a developer. I, however do not believe that US variant SD Samsung phones are not rootable. There have been countless times before where people have made that statement and yet root has come to fruition, albeit may take a considerable amount of time and effort. Many US customers are unable to buy international variants and are stuck with what we can get. So with that being said, I hope that I am not being too pushy with regards to your statement, I just refuse to be pessimistic when it comes to development and root efforts. The galaxy s8 had root even though it took some time, yet it was suppose to be unrootable. I just like to think that regardless of people saying it "can't " is a motivator to challenge development and experiment.
You two should work with @elliwigy and his root project! He could use some assistance & expertise & team! Cheers

I am aware, as I was the last person to root one. Changes came with the s9 family that closed the last remaining doors. As you can see by looking the s9 or s9+ were never rooted. The s10 won't be either

It's not. In 100 out of 100 times you find these online they are just the combination bootloader repackaged with this incorrect name, because they can be used to bypass frp in some cases.
I don't know why you are looking for the eng bootloader anyway. Even in the incredibly unlikely scenario you found the real one, it won't help you because devices past the s7 won't boot them anyway without a special certificate that your phone doesn't have (because it effectively unlocks your bootloader anyway)

Man, if only we were able to find and use the ENG firmware! Even if anyone is able to find ENG firmware, they will not be able to use it as @partcyborg already pointed out.. You would need some sort of ENG Token to convert your device into an ENG device which as he also stated would in itself be like unlocking the bootloader.. If you know anyone or any company that is able to convert devices to eng devices (I highly doubt it) then please let us know.
Last I heard if you could even find anyone that is able to sell you an ENG cert/token that they are very expensive...

haha yes, that irritates the CRAP out of me... its like the entire internet doesn't know the difference between "ENG" and "FACTORY" sometimes..
to add, factory firmware will not allow you to root your device. It is only typically "debuggable" (no it isn't a userdebug and if you don't know what this means then it probably won't help you either), permissive and verity disabled.
ENG firmware typically will have "eng" in its name and 5th letter from right to left will typically be an E (for ENG.)
To top it off, most of the world can't even flash factory firmware onto g975u.... I think people should focus on figuring that out before anything.. if not, the world is doooooomed
On a side note: The S8/S8+ SamPWND root did use some ENG firmware (this was of course released after the S7).. Mainly we used the ENG system which has SU binaries by default.. but I can 100% tell you even if we did come across ENG firmware, we can no longer flash the system without ENG token/cert...

$600 USD per device for the s8/s8+. That is after the company plops down $25k up front just to set everything up.
It's likely priced this way specifically to make it virtually impossible to do things like give them out on XDA
I think elliwigy has rooted the S9. S10 will be very very hard to do if not impossible.
