This method will work in windows for:
SD Cards in memory card readers/laptops
Phone set in memory card mode
HISTORY
Ok i ran into a wall with this one because of three reasons:
1. Laptops SD reader requires drivers to work, ok in windows useless in linux without the driver, so gpart and hirens boot cd out the window there.
2. My kaiser has a 6.1 rom on it and as far as i can remember it doesnt have a work as a memory stick option that appears on later roms like my touch pro had.
3. the touch pro has a broken digitiser and wont register my finger, so i can get the dam thing into usb memory stick mode.
So skip ahead if you dont want the long story of how i got it to work and made it a little easier for other.
Ok first job created a virtual pc with blank 8gb virtual disk and created the file system 1 x fat32 and 2 x ext2 partitions using hirens bootcd. Next i cloned the disk to a ghost32 compressed image file, as its only the file table and no files its really small (36K). So i rar'ed it up and uploaded so other people can use it as well. (5K)
HOW TO DO IT
Download my blank ghost image from :
Then you need ghost32.exe this can be extracted or ran from hirens bootcd and found as part of a Trialware download at Symantecs site: https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=32763 (you will need to create a login to download)
From there just run ghost32.exe and have your sd card ready and connected to the machine, be it in reader or a phone set in memory card mode. Select Disk from Image and select the image file on your hard disk. Then select the SD card and adjust the volume sizes as your require, it will complain about locking the drive and took an age on mine (2 mins), but eventually it was done from there just follow your droid guides for installing.
I know this doesnt help the vast amount of people, but if your stuck like i was and could get access to the card under windows and nothing else it works a treat. If however you can access it under dos etc, you may also want to use this way as its much faster than having to burn an ISO and reboot your entire PC just for partition an SD Card.
Hope this helps someone out.

Since it's only 5k, do you mind posting it here? The link has reached limit, 10 downloads.
Re-mirrored and added to the main post, lol ur lucky it was deleted from the main machine, tho the laptop still had the ghost image
Nice, but can you make one for 4gb sd card
Thanks.

Brilliant solution! One of those "Why did nobody think of this before" things.
Guide to run Windows 8 Pro from a External Disk using a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk)
I created this guide to have the option to install windows 8 pro in an external disk with the purpose to test it without touching my current disk and also to have the hability to boot from it directly when i connect the disk to my notebook, and when it was disconnected still using my notebook as if it were not installed. It is also useful when you haven't space on your disk and you can not replace it
I use a VHD because i think is the best way to test the new windows 8 using all the capacity the your PC, to difference where you are using a Virtual Machine where only use a part of the capacity of your pc.
Anyway exist many way to do this, this is only one that worked for my and i wanted to share with you.
Thing that need before begin:
you need a External Disk at least 40 GB
booteable pendrive with windows 8 Pro or Dvd
you need to create a VHD disk
Remember backup your information, this guide worked for me and others, that's not mean that works for everybody
Step to Make a USB stickI used "Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool" from Here, I don't explain this because is easy and only you need to follow the step that the app provide
Step to create a vhd disk
What is a VHD:
VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) is a file format which represents a virtual hard disk drive (HDD). It may contain what is found on a physical HDD, such as disk partitions and a file system, which in turn can contain files and folders. It is typically used as the hard disk of a virtual machine.
Open Computer Management, select Storage and select Disk Management.
Now you can see all the disk in your Computer.

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The picture is only a reference, is not shown the real disk
Select the External Disk
In the right side, there is a option that say; "more action", click there and select "create a VHD".
You'll see a screen like this:
Choose where you want save the vhd disk and the name for the vhd disk. (i personally save it in my external disk)
Now you'll see this screen:
Close Computer Management and open it again to Initialize the Virtual Disk.
Right-click and you new unallocated space and select "new simple volume"
The wizard start, click next
Dont modified the size of the disk and next
Assing the letter and next
Format as ntfs and next
Click finish, now you create a vhd disk to install windows 8
Remember what name you used for the vhd disk and where you saved it.
Step to install windows 8 Pro using a VHD disk
Restart your computer with your new USB key plugged in and startup your BOOT MENU
Select your USB Unit to run Windows 8 Pro Installer.
Start the SETUP process and click in install now
Stop In the screen that show the hard drive and NOT SELECT THE DISK
Instead hit SHIFT-F10 to get to a console. We want to attach our VHD and install to THAT instead.
In the cmd screen type DISKPART, now attached the VHD with these commands:
Code:
DISKPART> select vdisk file=d:\VMs\Win8.vhd
DISKPART> attach vdisk
In my case D but you assign the letter where you have saved the vhd disk.
[B]Tip: Before you enter Diskpart, I recommend "CD x:" to find your actual Storage Device. (X - Multiple possible Drive letters, not the same as when you're in Windows).[/B]
Next, ALT-TAB back over to the list of disks and hit REFRESH, You'll see your VHD show up.
Select it and click on next, Note that installation will warn you that this VHD can't be booted to, go ahead and install to that empty VHD.
Here i let windows install for itself, and that it reboot a couple of time.
Now we come to this screen:
Proceed with installation, personally i used a windows account to get all the functions of windows 8 pro, later you can change to local account.
When you finish you will get into you new Windows 8 Pro booting from your vhd disk
Now when you reboot you will have the new windows 8 bootloader menu:
but here the Problem, remember that i using a external drive, and when i disconnected it windows does not boot anymore or having to do lots of commands to achieve a successful start, forcing you to connect the external disk to boot the computer, to avoid this:
Boot into Windows 7
Run msconfig
In the Boot tab you will see the following:
Code:
windows 8 Default OS
windows 7 Current OS
Select Windows 7 and press make default. Now you get this:
Code:
windows 8
windows 7 Current OS; Default OS
With this simply step we can use the windows 7 bootloader to Dualboot our pc and no longer requires us to have connected external disk when we only use windows 7.
Any questions you want to ask me I'm here to help you as much as I can. I would be appreciated any comment or suggestion about this guide or simply it like you, let me know about it and press the Thanks Button
I have some modifications for you...
1.) You do not need a 40GB Hard Drive (not sure why so many tutorials make this claim) as you could make a 5GB VHD and still run Windows 8 but will be limited on data to install/store (which any important data should be saved to SkyDrive (or your Cloud solution) or an external Partition (or use "Local Disk" aka your actual Windows X Edition).
2). Do not use a Dynamic Expanding VHD, always Fixed (just a personal success story for me)
** OPTIONAL: Save the VHD on the Hard Drive you're making the VHD from **
3). I would simply just rename (NO SPACES for 1st TIMERS) the new VHD once initialized as Windows will Format/Do its magic in the Install.
4). Depending on how many "Storage" devices you have will depend on the Drive letter, usually goes from C - I.
Tip: Before you enter Diskpart, I recommend "CD x:" to find your actual Storage Device. (X - Multiple possible Drive letters, not the same as when you're in Windows).
5). During the hard drive select option, you won't get a warning about the hard drive if you follow step #3.
6). No need for MSCONFIG as your new Windows 8 created a new MBR (Master Boot Record) on the actual hard drive, which you should warn people upfront. Therefore even if your other Hard Drive (assuming you're doing external) is disconnected and holds your VHD, since it already detected another Windows OS, it automatically adds it to the Boot Record as the MBR Shows that purdy Windows 8 Startup Drive/OS Selector.
Otherwise, good tutorial . As for the above, that is strictly from my own personal experience as a developer/IT Prof & blah blah, I have done this probably 30 times now just for Windows 8 as we have multiple Tablet/Slates & Laptop + Desktops that needed this done for our Tech Support, Dev's, and our EU/Product Testers.
Should also mention, if you mess up or don't like your new Windows 8? Simply delete the VHD (in other Windows) and go to MSCONFIG and remove the Windows 8 entry from the MBR/Startup.

Thanks for your feedback mate , about it:
for the point 1: i suggest this space because it is the space the microsoft suggest always when install windows and how this guide is for everybody i don´t wanted change it, i know that can be used a lower space.
for the point 4: i forgot to mention it, i have already changed it into the post
for the point 6: i add the part about msconfig and this is my personal experience i don´t know if is good or bad when i leave the windows 8 boot and i disconnected the external disk, the current operating system does not boot (windows 7), i get always a windows error: "windows can not initialize the component winload.exe" and i tried many config when i have installed it but again it is just a way to do it. Anyway mate, i really appreciate your answer :good:

My question is...does this method erase space from the external HDD permanently? Or once I don't want to boot can I delete the vhd file and get back all the space?

I just installed Windows 8 on a VHD it was not a difficult procedure and everithing is working fine.
The advantage of this method is that a backup of Windows is very simple now: just drag the .vhd file to another disk
One remark: When my BIOS is setting to startup from USB it will not start the bootloader...
Thanks DeltaSync!
For those who are able to Windows To Go does this. Requires Enterprise though.

Note 2 XXALJ1 , Mac OS X 10.8.2
file transfer between mac and phone is horrible.
this a list of options I attempted
0 : Android File Transfer
useless
neither MTP option nor camera PTP work for me
(works with my Nexus 7, so it's not broken)
1 - Kies on Mac:
very clumsy interface for generic file transfer
BUT
can decide location (sd versus phone)
USB connection works and is fast.
queues multiple transfers, so suitable for transferring few large movies.
2 - Airdroid app.
wifi not usb speed
clumsy browser interface for multiple file transfer
does not support the external sd card as a target
3 - SSHdroid on phone + macfusion
WiFI not usb speed
quite often mounts in read-only. could not figure why
needs two distinct macfusion entries for sdcard and internal
OSX finder interface for file management is better than airdroid
with pathfinder you also get to queue file transfers
4 - AltMounter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626713
does not work for me
5 - Mount inside a VM
I tried with the virtualbox hypervisor -
could not get windows xp guest to load mtp drivers
with a ubuntu 12.04 guest it worked. so then the guest could access the mac files via ssh or shared folder
however the overall speed was disappointing.
has anyone done better ?
Thanks. I'd like to know other options as well.
Yep, Android File Transfer not working here either. It worked perfectly on the Note I when connected as Camera PTP.
Looks like I'll have to give Mac Kies a try.
PROGRESS!! MTP connection with Mac
I uninstalled Heimdall
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32567113&postcount=1566
I uninstalled Kies (you need to download the Kies dmg again)
http://www.jrtstudio.com/iSyncr/UninstallKies
restarted mac & phone
1) use the iSyncr app
was able to connect my Note II via USB
(previously it detected it but failed to communicate)
and transfer files to either the phone or my ext sd card
2) I re-tried AltMounter (see my original post)
and it mounted the phone memory only under /Volumes/Android device
after unmount it did not work again - it is admittedly not yet completely stable.
I'll keep that as option B
---------
So after importing a large subset of my ITunes from the mac to the extSD card,
using iSyncr over USB I plan to reinstall the ugly :crying: Kies and my strategy will be
- using kies to usb-copy individual large files (eg movies)
- using iSyncr only over wifi (I expect iSyncr not to work when Kies is installed)
for playlist synch and small music transfers
-using airdroid over wifi for occasional other transfers
Still not optimal but second best for now.
I remain puzzled that MTP connection works with iSyncr and with Kies but not with Android File Transfer.

Thanks for all your trial and error, edo. Kies works OK for my purposes for now I guess.
What a pain this is.
Unfortunately the MTP Application has stopped.
I started to get this message "Unfortunately the MTP Application has stopped." in a popup anytime I plugged in the phone.
Neither Kies not iSyncr could connect any longer via USB.
I did some extensive searches but did not find good info.
At long last, I reset the phone to the factory default - what a pain, just made it easier by having all important data on te external sd card -
and immediately then Kies connected again.
I think the MTP implementation at this stage is still not very robust.
Shame Google/Samsung removed the old USB mass storage option.
This is my only gripe with the phone. Costed me too much time and still I haven't got Finder access to the phone storage as hierarchical file system. Almost like iOS !!!!
Samsung's recommended option EasyPhoneSync works perfectly for me.
http://easyphonesync.com/en/
But it's only for syncing music. For basic file transfer I just stick the SD card in the macs card reader.
I cant get Android File Transfer to work, but iSyncr works just fine with the phone set as MTP mode.
Hope this helps.....if anyone get find out how to solve the Android File Transfer issue then please share!
Not easy the live of Mac User with Android ... i'm in the same case of you
I wish a good app for this use !!!
Considering that both iSyncr and Kies can work using the MTP connection
Google should sort its Android File transfer app out.
It's worth noting that if you peek inside the 3 Mac apps iSyncr, Kies and Android File Transfer you'll
find some files related to usb / mtp that have the same name (forgot what) in the 3 apps but are different versions.
That's why probably why iSyncr cannot work if Kies is installed (Kies has a couple of background processes that keep polling for a phone IIRC).

For large transfers I wanted to use USB and so I gave in to the horrible kies.
But I am not using its synchronization features, or its library at all. The last thing I want is yet another library to maintain.
If you click on the folder icons (see screenshot attached) you can then drag and drop from the Finder to the small window.
For normal transfers I just use airdroid.
For music playlist synchronization I like iSyncr
For me I used to use Airdroid, but now i have given up and just stick the sd card into the card reader....not the ideal situation. And i agree with the OP Andriod File Transfer should be sorted out ASAP.

You are correct - I can navigate to the extSD card using the files icon.
The speed upload shortcut does not offer the ext sd card as a target though.
it'd be great if airdroid offered something like a favorite shourtcuts list.
Will suggest it

hey guyss found the soliution.... everything woks 100% now..
- Download the latest version of Samsung Kies: http://www.samsung.com
- Open the downloaded DMG
- Once you have the .Kies20mac_S8173.pkg file window with the "Uninstall.app", right click on the KIES20mac_S8173.pkg and open using "The Unarchiver" and extract to a folder (I created a KIES folder on my desktop)
- From here you will see a file called "contents.pkg", Right click and select "Show Package Contents"
- Double click "Payload", it will create a file called "Payload-2", (at least it did for me)
- double click "Payload-2" and it will create another file called "Payload-2-2"(the payload part seems to have just duplicated so you may only need to do this once. But keep opening until you see the Applications Folder)
- In "Payload-2-2" you'll find the Applications folder, within the Applications folder you'll see the "Kies.app".
- Transfer the Kies.App to the Applications folder and then run Kies.
wooohhhooowww finally it works....
i have also installed ANDROID FILE TRANSFER... and it works like charm....

Hi Raman
that solution for Kies on Mountain Lion that you can still find via google is obsolete.
That was developed to get Kies to install and work on Mountain Lion when initially the new OS came out.
If you had read my post, you'd have seen that the current Kies does install and work.
it is currently version kies20mac_s9999.pkg not Kies20mac_S8173.pkg
In fact the solution you reposted only avoids installing the ssuddrv.kext kernel extension that was incompatible once,
but currently works. Actually - following the obsolete instructions makes Kies NOT recognize the Galaxy Note 2
You must have had a good ssuddrv installed anyway by some other package, that's why it works for you.
As of today,
Android File Transfer just works internal & external SD - after I uninstalled the now-unneeded Kies
Note - I re-downloaded the dmg.

Yup, AFT working. lol :good:
I desisntalled Kies, desintalled Android File Transfert, reinstalled it (downloaded it yesterday), but got the same message when I plug the Note II : Could not connect to the device.
I'm on OSX 10.7.5 and it's a Stock ROM (MTP seems to work with alternative ROM but not with samsung's one)
I’ll try to keep this as short as possible. This instruction will be for Window OS, via command prompt.
This is for those of you who are just having whatever kind of issues with your Micro SD cards. Phone won’t detect it, it’s not showing the correct storage size by some huuuge amount (like a 64 GB card is only showing 27 or something….), etc etc… it won’t mount, anything. Also, it is important to understand a few basic things…
If you have a 64 GB card, it’s default file system should be exFAT. If you tried to format it with FAT32, that is likely the issue you are having with it not reading, or showing incorrect database size. If that is the case, you need to do a full format, and repair it per these instruction.
ANYWAYS... here. we. go.
1.Pop the micro SD card into some type of card adapter for either your USB, or you SD slot on your PC. A message window will pop up asking you what you want to do, etc etc… if you don’t want to pull anything off the card for backup purposes, then just close it.
2.Open a folder somewhere (like on your desktop for example). After you do this, you will see on the left side, a list under “computer” there will be “C:\” some others, etc etc… your SD card you popped in should be there as well. For this example, let’s say windows has called it “F:\”
3. Right click on F:\ … select “Format…”
4. Now it will give you some options here. It will tell you the file system type that the card is currently formatted to. Make sure “quick format” option is checked, and go ahead and format it.
5.After it is done, safely unmout the device by clicking the little USB icon (with the green check mark) on the bottom right of your screen (on your tool bar) and select the option to eject that particular storage device. Pop it back in your phone. If this solved your issue, stop here. If you are still having problems, continue reading.
6.Take the card out, and follow steps 1, 2, and 3 again.
7.This time will be a little different, and will take MUCH longer (depending on the size of your card). After you select format to bring up the format tool window. This time you are going to UNCHECK “quick format”. All cards that are 64 GB should be formatted to exFAT. 32 GB and below should be FAT32 or whatever the default was for your card. I am pretty sure the note II is supporting exFAT file systems native, now. So you should be good there.
8. Now after you have unchecked “quick format”, go ahead and proceed with the formatting. Leave everything else default.
Now the waiting game… this can take up to two hours… So find something to do, lol.
9.After it is done, follow step 5 of this procedure. Pop SD back into your phone. If this didn’t fix your issue, proceed to next step, if it did, stop reading.
10.For this next part, it will require command prompt work, and please pay close attention.
11.Go to your desktop, and on your desktop, create a file called “disk_repair.txt” this needs to be a text file. So when you right click on the desktop to create the file, select “new” and then select “text file”
12.Click your windows icon on the bottom left of your screen, and the “search programs and files” box, start to type “command prompt”… you will see it pop up at the top. When it does, RIGHT click on it, and select “run as administrator”… it might ask you for your windows password, it might not, I can’t remember, but self-explanatory what you should do if it does ask.
13. After you open command prompt, pop the micro SD card back into the computer. It might ask you to format it again, who knows, freaking windows ikr. If it does, just do the “quick format” option and it will go pretty quick and then you can continue with the next part.
14. So again, let’s assume the computer reads the storage device as F: and then let’s assume your windows user name is BATMAN (type whatever is relevant to you… if the storage device shows up as Z: or M: or WindowsSucks: then enter it accordingly into the command I am about to give you… but again… for argument’s sake… it is F: and you are “BATMAN”
15.So, how… do we killlllll…. Then batman???? Rofl jk…
16. type this command into your command prompt… exactly as it is, then hit enter.
Code:
chkdsk /F F: > "C:\Users\BATMAN\Desktop\disk_repair.txt"
17. After you do this, you will see an ouput. If everything is good, you will see something like this in the output:
Code:
The type of the file system is exFAT.
Volume Serial Number is 9CD4-E720
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.
62364672 KB total disk space.
0 KB in 0 files.
128 KB in 1 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
256 KB in use by the system.
62364288 KB available on disk.
131072 bytes in each allocation unit.
487224 total allocation units on disk.
487221 allocation units available on disk.
18. If it is showing errors, or you are still having problems, go to your desktop, open up that little file you created, and your ouput will be written to it. Upload it here so we can look at it.
That should be thorough enough.
Can anybody verify that the stock kernel supports exFAT file systems? Or if any kernels do, which ones? That would be useful information to have in this thread. I just didn’t have time to go digging around for it. This took like 10 minutes to write up I was waiting for my food here at Togo’s. lol
Stock does and I believe persues kernel does as well. I haven't run a custom kernel in q while so I can't confirm that though

i thought stock did as well, i just was not sure.
Hey,
I'm running windows 8... i recently dual booted ubuntu and got tired of it, how would i got about getting that disk space back... would i have to reformat? i'm missing like over a hundred gigs worth of space because of. I would really love to be able to do it with out having to format the computer if possible.
NOTE: Before you do this, you should make sure your Win8 bootloader is intact. You can do this from the Win8 boot menu; there are troubleshooting tools which will allow you to fix the boot loader. I don't remember the exact commands offhand, look them up.
You can get the space back easily; just delete the partition(s) that Ubuntu is on, and extend your Windows partition into the free space.
Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc, you can just type it into Start and hit Enter).
Select the partition to which you installed Ubuntu.
Delete it (can be done from right-click menu).
Select the partition with Windows on it (should be the biggest remaining one).
Extend it (can be done from right-click) to fill the available space.
