Should I stay on 4.3 or update to 4.4.4 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have been on 4.3 for sometime now and rooted. I have an AT&T i747 Samsung Galaxy S3
My phone keeps trying to update me to the new 4.4.4 and its getting annoying.
I have spent sometime trying to figure out how to backup all my data / contacts / apps with all logins / photos / txt messages / call logs / email accounts
But everytime I fine something that might work the app either is broken or I get some error like cant create folder on the internal storage (tried titanium backup, Myback root, and ROM toolbox) none would work.
All I want is to have a Rom similar to stock that might allow some added features where I could doodle with customization fonts themes etc.. The only thing I use root for is allowing me to setup tethering. (What else is worthwhile I dont know)
I tired out dirty unicorn rom. I dont like the look for feel of it. Also It would not let me sync my google account for contacts and apps. I could not use TWRP to restore any of my apps or contacts because when I did it got stuck on the Dirty Unicorn logo. Doesn't matter because the UI of that rom was completly new to me and I like the Ui of the S3.
I would like to update to newer software than 4.3.
Really appreciate everyones help.

You cannot use OTA to update to 4.4.2 unless you have a stock recovery with an unrooted system.
Some apps need to be updated in order to run under 4.4.2.
Some of the latest custom ROMs will also require and updated bootloader and modem to make calls and connect to carrier data networks.

might want to try 'online nandroid' & ' nandroid manager'. there on the playstore (or use to be). online nandroid will make a backup kinda like twrp and nandroid mngr , you can restore personal and system apps (if you want) like Tibu ; sms , mms , phone logs , browser history/bookmarks , etc. i've used for yrs. might be worth checking out if nothing else is working for you. good luck.
err on the side of kindness

I would advise staying with 4.3. I am on 4.4 and AT&T has trouble with it (no it isn't my phone).
Is it possible to revert back to a 4.3 (custom or stock) rom from a 4.4.x custom rom?

You can run custom 4.3 and custom 4.4.2 ROMs but you cannot downgrade the bootloader and modem to a previous version.

[Q] keep messages after flashing ROM

I'm trying to flash a ROM that'll take me from 2.1 to 2.2
I've looked around for a way to be able to flash a ROM while still keeping your messages intact, but I haven't been able to do it. I've been able to specifically restore SMS data with Titanium after flashing, but sadly this makes the messaging service force close whenever I try to use it.
Anyone know of a working way to keep your messages after wiping to flash a ROM? I find it annoying to have to look at an empty inbox every time after flashing a ROM and plus, I'm kinda nostalgic. Any help would be nice.
I recall my backup pro, yet I have noticed that the ROMs based of the stock are able to restore, there is a folder on the SDCARD called Backup which I think contain the settings and messages it restores during initial setup, there also is a application called setup on those ROMs have not tried yet what if you flash rosie, launcher2, and the setup just to see if it works (not setting it as the default launcher of course or just after setup if you are not able to use home screen rm files using adb)

[Q] What to flash?

Hey guys,
Right now, I have an unrooted, GB i927 (stock rom). I held off on the previous stock updates through Kies to ICS, since there were some features (read: silly little things like the date and carrier switched places when opening the notification center, the YB contacts addition, and I think that was it) that I didn't like. Now, seeing as how GB is slowly being phased out of development, I am looking for something to flash. I am aware of the newer UCLJ3 update via Kies, and have considered that, but it doesn't fix the silly little things I mentioned. I have also looked at dman's CM10 port, but that is still in beta. Therefore, can someone suggest an ICS rom to flash? I am looking for something with the physical keyboard working (a must, as well as the backlight working), theme support, and no YB plugin in the contacts! Also, if someone has a rom to suggest, would I have to update to UCLJ3? Or does that even matter? (I'm pretty new to the custom roms on Android, so some help would be appreciated.)
Thanks!
Flash dman's deodexed JL3 and flash 14 toggles. It gives the phone an awesome feel.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Is there a specific version of 14 toggles to flash? All I could find was ones built for specific phones/roms, so I'm not sure if there is a i927-specific or just a general version.
And also, I have heard about the T-Mobile Theme Engine, which is on CM (shows up as Theme Manager?). Would this rom have the support for themeing as well?
literom 0.8.4... has 14 toggles already pre-installed.
I recommend backing up everything with titanium backup, doing a nandroid backup ... flash stock w/ Odin, factory reset and wipe cache, then install CWM then literom 0.8.4 per the instructions. Restore your apps/config etc. with Titanium and you should be good to go.
I created a batch that held only my apps/settings (IE: email, accounts, wifi hot spots, frozen bubble so i dont loose my level, SMS Messaging, call log, widgits I use, apex and config). I run my back to backup, I run it to restore with a new flash .. really saved time in trying new roms
Good luck!

What did you do did you make an update.zip? That did not work for me. Just wondering because I have the pro Titanium backup and now what I do after I install a new ROM is I return the apps I want 1 by 1 via Titanium. Also how do you backup your Text messages via Titanium backup? As well is there a way to backup your 10 speed dial numbers I hate having to redo those after every new Rom.

[Q] Questions About Flashing a New Rom

I have a GSM Nexus 4.1.1 rooted using my Mac and it's running the XenonHD rom. I rooted a while ago and do not really remember the nuances of it.
I would like to flash a new rom that includes the enhancements of 4.2 but obviously want to keep all my texts, music, programs, settings, etc. I have read around but need some definitive answers on steps to take to flash a new rom but keep my phone entirely intact. I also remember having problems with the google apps when I first rooted and flashed, and would love to avoid that.
Any advice would be appreciated, and my apologies if this appears to be redundant. I am just not very good with technology and would prefer to have all the facts pertinent to my situation beforehand. Thanks!
First of all - make a nandroid backup through your recovery menu. That way, if things go bad, you can flash your backup.
To backup messages, application data, programs etc, I'd recommend using Titanium Backup Pro. Its a few bucks but if you flash often, its money well spent for sure.
Remember though, that when you flash a new ROM, restoring all your apps and settings from a previous ROM can cause problems. I would recommend backing up messages and non-system application data only. You can restore apps through the play store and then use titanium backup to restore the data for the app.
Depending on the ROM you install - you may have to install the gapps separately. See the ROM thread for details on that.
Lastly, if going to a 4.2 ROM, make sure you have updated your recovery as there can be some SD card issues otherwise.

CWM from 4.1.2 to 4.3: No longer working, cannot restore backup?

Hi there guys,
Long time, no chat! I've got a bit of an issue now that I've moved to Android 4.3 (Team Inferno's build), in that the CWM version available to us isn't compatible with 4.3 (I was on 4.1.2 before I flashed). I'm still stuck trying to figure out how to get the contacts back that I lost. I did a CWM backup before I flashed to 4.3, and I figured I could migrate back and forth via restore if I needed to get them back, but now that I have 4.3, CWM doesn't work.
If anyone can assist, this is what I was thinking I would need to do in order to get the contacts back from my older 4.1.2 CWM backup I made this afternoon, before the new 4.3 ROM rendered CWM useless to restore my backup:
-Install TWRP, since there isn't a CWM working with 4.3 yet (...is this correct?!)
-Download a 4.0/4.1 ROM from somewhere
-Flash the older ROM with TWRP
-Install CWM to match older version ROM
-Restore old CWM backup (file is on the SD card), move the *SIM* and *phone* contacts to Google (it only moved the phone or SIM contacts when I imported them to Google (dunno which), but not both of them...so much for smart technology!)
-Once all contacts are verified backed up, re-flash to the newer ROM again
-Restore contacts via Google
...this is a huge PITA as far as the time consumption goes. Is there a quicker way? Please advise. I can figure this stuff out if I take notes and surf the site a while, but time if of the essence and I've got no phone while I'm flashing/updating - makes it hard at work. Thanks in advance!!!
It is my understanding that Sim contacts would still be there. So you should be able to access them. Please use an app called Nandroid Manager and it will let you access the contents of your previous nandroid. Titanium Backup Pro can do the same as well. I don't use CWM but if going for TWRP, please use version 2.5.0 only.
Thanks for the advice! I was able to use Titanium to retrieve the contacts, and moved them all to Google so this won't happen again. With 3 places to save them, I wish the phone didn't seem to have a mind of it's own when saving (phone, sim, Google)! :silly:
Depending on your Rom, there are ways to set defalut and show only one set of contacts.

Phone and Contacts app missing from phone

Hi,
After a factory reset to Lollipop 5.0.2, I don't seem to have the Contacts or Phone app anymore. How can I solve this?
The background story is as follows:
I recently resat my Z1 Compact and installed Lollipop 5.0.2. Earlier I had a CyanogenMod version, but it had some annoying bugs, so I decided to go back to stock Android.
I used Titanium Backup to backup apps and user data from CM. When I tried to restore these apps and userdata in Lollipop, I got error messages all the time, saying "android.process.acore", "android.process.phone", "Phone", "Top Contacts" and "Contacts" had stopped working. Trying to get rid of these error messages, I cleared the data and uninstalled some apps related to Phone and Contacts, but the error messages kept coming.
I therefore did a factory reset again. I discovered that I did not have any contacts synced on my phone, so I tried to sync them.
It turned out I couldn't find neither the Contacts app or Phone app on my phone. It is therefore impossible to enter the settings in the Contacts app to make the phone sync contacts.
I have tried searching, but I haven't found a solution.
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you may have to reflash. Did you check /system/app? Are they there? If. So, you could try clicking on base.apk, and see if they reinstall, or try to get a stock apk from another user. I'm currently not on stock ROM, so I can't. I came across this thread recently, http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/themes-apps/xperia-z3-apks-t3059426 - it's for Z3, but they might work, or maybe there's a similar thread for z1c, (I haven't seen it). Hope that helps.
Thanks for your answer.
The only relevant apps I could find in /system/app, was ContractsSIM. I'll try to find a thread with stock apps for z1c like you suggested, if not, I'll try the app from z3. If that doesn't work either, I guess I'll have to reflash again.

1. if you switch from a custom ROM back to stock always make a clean install (full wipe)
2. NEVER restore apps with Titanium Backup from CM to stock - lots of problems
Full Wipe - flash stock ROM - install all apkĀ“s new - finish
Ok, great, I'll try that. ?
By the way, I haven't been able to reboot into recovery mode. It's like that possibility doesn't exist after I flash to stock Lollipop 5.0.2. That means I haven't been able to try to install Xposed (which I don't know if would work at all, though...). Any idea why that is, and how I could fix that?

If you flashed stock ROM via Flashtool, you no longer have root or recovery, etc., unless it was a pre-rooted ftf. You'll have to reroot, and flash recovery.
Edit- don't know if you figured it out yet or not, but. I came across this today - http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...-collection-stock-files-sony-devices-t3142349
