[Q] What to flash? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hey guys,
Right now, I have an unrooted, GB i927 (stock rom). I held off on the previous stock updates through Kies to ICS, since there were some features (read: silly little things like the date and carrier switched places when opening the notification center, the YB contacts addition, and I think that was it) that I didn't like. Now, seeing as how GB is slowly being phased out of development, I am looking for something to flash. I am aware of the newer UCLJ3 update via Kies, and have considered that, but it doesn't fix the silly little things I mentioned. I have also looked at dman's CM10 port, but that is still in beta. Therefore, can someone suggest an ICS rom to flash? I am looking for something with the physical keyboard working (a must, as well as the backlight working), theme support, and no YB plugin in the contacts! Also, if someone has a rom to suggest, would I have to update to UCLJ3? Or does that even matter? (I'm pretty new to the custom roms on Android, so some help would be appreciated.)
Thanks!

Flash dman's deodexed JL3 and flash 14 toggles. It gives the phone an awesome feel.

Is there a specific version of 14 toggles to flash? All I could find was ones built for specific phones/roms, so I'm not sure if there is a i927-specific or just a general version.
And also, I have heard about the T-Mobile Theme Engine, which is on CM (shows up as Theme Manager?). Would this rom have the support for themeing as well?

literom 0.8.4... has 14 toggles already pre-installed.
I recommend backing up everything with titanium backup, doing a nandroid backup ... flash stock w/ Odin, factory reset and wipe cache, then install CWM then literom 0.8.4 per the instructions. Restore your apps/config etc. with Titanium and you should be good to go.
I created a batch that held only my apps/settings (IE: email, accounts, wifi hot spots, frozen bubble so i dont loose my level, SMS Messaging, call log, widgits I use, apex and config). I run my back to backup, I run it to restore with a new flash .. really saved time in trying new roms
Good luck!

What did you do did you make an update.zip? That did not work for me. Just wondering because I have the pro Titanium backup and now what I do after I install a new ROM is I return the apps I want 1 by 1 via Titanium. Also how do you backup your Text messages via Titanium backup? As well is there a way to backup your 10 speed dial numbers I hate having to redo those after every new Rom.

Anyone have a clean backup/restore for ROM changes?

I used to have a WinMo device that I would flash new roms to a couple times a month. I had a procedure down to backup contacts, SMS, and CallLogs with some other info. Then after, the flash i would restore the SMS, contacts, and Call logs and an auto installer (Sashimi) would redo all my settings (email, registry, etc) and then install a couple apps I used regularly. I used this method because the ROMs would change the software on the device around and I didn't trust a standard app backup since it might restore old files onto a newer build app.
I know with Android, there's a ton of apps (Titanium, sprint, etc) to do backups but some seem more purpose built than others. Plus, the contacts get backed up on google, so they don't matter much.
Does anyone have a good method that they use to backup the data and restore between ROM changes on Android similar to the above?
Titanium backup is pretty much the gold standard for Android
It will back up ALL of your apps, their data, and your system data but you want to be careful about restoring system data. If you restore everything you're likely to get boot loops from something being incompatible, just be selective about what system data you restore and maybe only restore one thing at a time the first couple times so you can get a feel for what restores well and what doesnt.
Conversly I have had almost no problems batch restoring all my apps and their data. The only real problem you are likely to have is with apps that check to see if it's a restored copy or an install from the original apk. None of gameloft's games can be restored, for example. That has been my experience, hope it helps.
nebenezer pretty much got it, I'll just add a couple points
Invest in the donate version of Titanium. It automates the re-install process of apps. Otherwise, you will have to physically press Install, and then OK once an app is finished installing, for every app.
System settings items in green (includes SMS messages, call log, etc) are pretty much safe to backup/restore when switching ROMs, you just have to make sure you are switching between like ROMs.
For example:
2.2 Sense-based ROM <----> 2.2 Sense-based ROM - Ok
CyanogenMOD AOSP <----> 2.2 Sense-based ROM - Bad
Any 2.2 ROM <----> Any 2.1 ROM - Bad
Sense AOSP-lite ROM <----> 2.2 Sense-based ROM - You can probably get away with a few settings, but if you try to restore HTC Browser settings/bookmarks to AOSP browser, etc, or vice versa, it will likely cause issues.
That just goes for settings, as far as user apps, those are pretty much safe to restore to/from any ROM.

Backuping before Super Wipe

Heya.
I want to backup my contacts, my SMSs and App Data before doing a super wipe and flashing a new rom. I'd also like to backup my phone settings and apps too, but that probably kinda removes some of the beneficial effects of the wipe.
I've used Titanium Backup to do these things before, but I've been getting more and more FCs that no one else using the rom have reported so I'm thinking my wiping hasn't been fully effective.
What are the best ways to backup these things? I want the backup methods to be easy to do and restore but should leave othing bad behind so I wouldn't get extra FCs.
Best for contacts: Google (?)
Best for SMS: ?
Best for App Data: ?
Thanks alot!

Before flashing a new rom be sure to do backups if you don't want to have problems. But also be aware that some programs may perform different on different ROMs because of kernel, sense ans no-sense roms etc. Some programs I backedup on some roms worked like charm and on some roms they FC, but after uninstall and instal from .apk program works again.
For program and DATA I use Titanium. You can restore only APP, Only DATA or both APP+DATA (which can restore high scores in games or program settings you set).
Titanium backup can also restore screens and system datas like Wi-Fi settings, accounts, SMS messages...... With that system data I found most problems because roms have a different versions of stock programs, and restoring data for facebook old version while backup is made on new version can be a problem. Happened to me. It is best if you restore system data to exact same rom or an updated version of last used rom (my experience).
Contacts you don't have to backup, at least i don't, because they will be pulled back to your phone when you set your google account.
I take screenshots of homescreen and app drawer, just in case that I don't forget something to install.
Full wipe you have to do when you completely moving from one rom to another. If you just upgrading you don't have to full wipe (only if it is necessary, but it will be written on home page of a rom developer). Every rom come with detailed instruction how to install. Some of them have application (.zip) to full wipe and format system. It there is such application you have to use it, if you want FC free DHD.
Hope it helps,
Thanks, looks good. Is it okay to move settings from older rom with older kernel and other things to a newer rom or can these cause force closes? How about app data, I'd like to keep my progress on few games for example, does backuping app data and moving them to a wiped fresh rom cause force closes?
Thanks!
EDIT: Didn't see the last post before this reply, it clears up stuff, thanks!

[Q] Quick way to re-install apps/settings after flashing new ROM

So I have only a little experience flashing ROMs but I am successfully on CM 10.0 at the moment and everything is working great.
The question I have is, for those people that are constantly flashing new roms, is there a quick and easy way to re-install all your apps and settings without having to do it one by one with every new rom?
I know you can have your contacts/calendar and such in google and I know Titanium Backup is awesome but it gives the occasional mess up when trying to restore some programs to a rom other then the one it was backed up from.
Am I missing another process here that thousands of people do every day to get their phone/apps back into a useable working order after flashing?
I use titanium backup and have never had an issue. only use it to restore user apps and user data never system apps or data, that's where the issues usually come from.
Also use a custom launcher and most of them have backup/restore options that put your home screens back quickly.

[Q] Questions About Flashing a New Rom

I have a GSM Nexus 4.1.1 rooted using my Mac and it's running the XenonHD rom. I rooted a while ago and do not really remember the nuances of it.
I would like to flash a new rom that includes the enhancements of 4.2 but obviously want to keep all my texts, music, programs, settings, etc. I have read around but need some definitive answers on steps to take to flash a new rom but keep my phone entirely intact. I also remember having problems with the google apps when I first rooted and flashed, and would love to avoid that.
Any advice would be appreciated, and my apologies if this appears to be redundant. I am just not very good with technology and would prefer to have all the facts pertinent to my situation beforehand. Thanks!
First of all - make a nandroid backup through your recovery menu. That way, if things go bad, you can flash your backup.
To backup messages, application data, programs etc, I'd recommend using Titanium Backup Pro. Its a few bucks but if you flash often, its money well spent for sure.
Remember though, that when you flash a new ROM, restoring all your apps and settings from a previous ROM can cause problems. I would recommend backing up messages and non-system application data only. You can restore apps through the play store and then use titanium backup to restore the data for the app.
Depending on the ROM you install - you may have to install the gapps separately. See the ROM thread for details on that.
Lastly, if going to a 4.2 ROM, make sure you have updated your recovery as there can be some SD card issues otherwise.

[Q] Couple of questions about flashing ROMs

I'm sort of a newbie with the ROM flashing thing and I have a couple of questions so please bear with me.
I'm rooted on stock JB and I have SuperSU and Titanium Pro installed. I have around 130 various apps installed from the Play Store and I have all of them backed up with Titanium Pro.
Approximately how long does it take to get everything restored after flashing a ROM? What state are the apps restored to and what gets backed up/restored. I use the stock SMS and WhatsApp for texting and chatting with friends and family and have a lot of texts in both places. I'm also in a few group chats in WhatsApp. What happens to those chats and texts when I restore the apps? Is all my chat history gone in both places? Am I automatically put back in my group chats in WhatsApp? Does Titanium Pro back up the messages in those apps as well?
It's these types of unknowns that have made me paranoid about flashing custom ROMs but I would really like the added features and the customizations that some of these ROMS have to offer.
How about dirty flashing? It would seem to mitigate some of my apprehension about the above issues. I would obviously create a nandroid (I have CWM instaled) but I assume I couldn't flash an AOKP based ROM over my stock TW, right?
Thanks for any help provided.
the user apps should be good
but 130 hmm i'd say ~20-40 mins to restore?
though i wouldnt suggest to restore the Stock SMS or any SYSTEM APPS on TouchWiz on different roms
DO NOT DIRTY FLASH UNRELATED ROM! do full wipe before you flash

To backup your texts in TiBu: Menu -> Backup to XML. Same thing can be done for call logs and wifi.
And dirty flashing is simply a bad idea. It will trigger errors and bugs. Follow the full instructions when installing (which includes wiping).
i know its already been said by pcshano and BWolf56 but i'd like to reiterate that you simply dont want to dirty flash. you would find yourself one of the many people on this forum, searching thru threads and begging for help and fixes with your system bugs. always do a full wipe.
as far as backing up your text threads, etc, as mentioned, tibu is good as well as an sms-specific app like sms backup or even super backup.
I just use SMS backup and restore for mt text's
One more question about flashing custom ROMs.
Can I dirty flash incremental updates to the same ROM. It seems some ROMs are updated quite frequently.
Thanks.

Yes. Flash latest release and gapps. Wipe cache/dalvik. Reboot
If you have any issues, full wipe and re flash before posting in a thread as that usually solves the problem
