So I have only a little experience flashing ROMs but I am successfully on CM 10.0 at the moment and everything is working great.
The question I have is, for those people that are constantly flashing new roms, is there a quick and easy way to re-install all your apps and settings without having to do it one by one with every new rom?
I know you can have your contacts/calendar and such in google and I know Titanium Backup is awesome but it gives the occasional mess up when trying to restore some programs to a rom other then the one it was backed up from.
Am I missing another process here that thousands of people do every day to get their phone/apps back into a useable working order after flashing?
I use titanium backup and have never had an issue. only use it to restore user apps and user data never system apps or data, that's where the issues usually come from.
Also use a custom launcher and most of them have backup/restore options that put your home screens back quickly.

I'm pretty sure that this hasn't been covered specifically so I'm posting a new thread.
I backed up all my apps and data on a stock rooted Sprint 4.24.651.1, 2.3.3 ROM via TBU Pro. I also performed a backup of my current ROM with ROM Manager. I then installed Team Nocturnal _Shooter_RLS_2.3.(after, of course, all the recommended wipes and resets) When I went to restore my apps and data I wondered if some of the previous app versions (where both ROMs have same apps/diff versions) would hose things up. It did, I think. Maybe all that I needed to do was clear some app caches and reboot. Not sure, I couldn't get any of the HTC widgets to load but I did see in another thread that cache clearing may fix that. But other stuff was goofy after the restore too. It became buggy and horribly slow, so I think that there's more to it than just the HTC stuff. I wonder if something I restored and maybe shouldn't have hosed it up. What I'm wondering is if someone would be so kind as to scan down my app lists and tell me which apps and/or data that are obvious that I shouldn't restore? For example, this new ROM has a different dialer, it makes sense to me that I wouldn't restore that. Same with anything to do with Sense, since this particular ROM I believe has a newer version, but not sure. I am thinking that any time I install a different ROM this will be a consideration but maybe I have the wrong idea about the whole thing. I have attached 30 images captured (incl the Software info screen) of my app list in TBU.
Lastly, I'll add that since making the move to Android from WinMo about a year ago I am very glad I did it. I could not have possibly been able to learn and do the things (rooting, S-off, flashing ROMS) that I have done without XDA! You folks are brainiacs and I greatly admire what you all do. You have to be very careful about what you restore using Titanium when you are moving from one ROM to another. I found this from personal experience (moving from Stock to Synergy RLS1 and then to MikG). There is some good info in the Titanium Backup Wiki.
The part that you need to be careful about is restoring system data that is incompatible with the newer system apps in your new ROM. Your best bet is to only restore the User Apps and their data. You can do this in Titanium by selecting Menu > Batch > Restore missing apps with data.
There is some system data that you can restore without getting into trouble (probably bookmarks, SMS Messages, Sprint Voicemail) but you are going to have to experiment. I restored my missing apps using the batch option and then went to the Backup/Restore screen to look at the System Apps and Data one by one to see if there was anything that I could restore. Sometimes I would restore some data that would cause a problem and I would have to Wipe that data (also in Titanium Backup/Restore screen) and move along. I know at least once I was forced to start fresh and Wipe and reflash the ROM.

Yeah, I had a feeling that there would be conflicts like that before I even restored. I never thought to read the TBU wiki...thanks for that tip! It looks like I have a lot more homework to do before I flash again. I really have to decide if the time investment is really worth the return. There are so many cool ROMs out there but what a lot of B.S. sorting out what works and what doesn't. It is excruciating to have to read through 50+ posts following a ROM release to find out what you're in for. What would be super-cool is if someone was able to construct a spreadsheet of the most popular ROMs in a column with all of the popular features (4G, Wifi Tether, Mirroring, etc), kernel compatibility, Sense or no Sense, etc in a row at the top, with check marks indicating whether or not the feature works or is baked in. I'd pay to see that. Especially if it were linked to the downloads to the ROMs and kernels.

I have been rooting for a long time since I had a G1. I never understood clearly how to transfer apps without the need to manually install them. Does creating a partition in the SD card to ext3 or ext4 have some factor to it? I would simply follow directions but didn't understand the process. Whenever I installed a new ROM, sometimes all of the apps would be install automatically and some ROMS would require me to install them manually. I also got Titaniumbackup Pro also. Is that still a good app to use to back up these days? Is there a popular app to back up text messaging as well or does many of the
Lately, I have been trying to find a good rom to use after many crashes of Andromadus V13. I am using the latest Anrdomadus Mimicry now and its great. Though, I realized that I didn't transfer any of my apps. As I was rooting a few ROMS previous to it, some would install a majority of the apps and others would require me to install them myself. Im curious of why this is so.
the auto restore is a function of the market, I don't like this method and choose no when I sign in (don't like wasting time and slowing things down cause of all the data over network or wifi
titanium back is my personal favorite way to restore apps on a new rom, there are other apps that will do this (romtollbox etc) tb will do texts but I have had issues with it

Apps are tied to your Google Play account and normally get automatically re-installed after you start your phone back up after a new ROM. Except, sometimes installing your ROM gives your phone a new "name" and Google Play doesn't know that it's the same phone (even though it's on the same account). So, if you go to Google Play on your computer, you would have more than one choice of phones to download apps to - your old phone name and your new phone name. And I've also had the occasional app out of many that just doesn't re-install for some reason.
Two words : Titanium Backup (though mainly only useful if you can restore your old rom, run a backup, then flash the new rom back).
While google can half-ass restore your downloads (settings may not always be intact), Titanium Backup will actually restore all your backed up apps along with their full settings/etc. It can also restore your rom's Android ID so that restored apps don't conflict.
But yea since you already have it, you should know least that much. Personally I have not found anything better than 4EXT Recovery and Titanium Backup Pro when it comes to backing up and restoring data.
ps: it can backup your SMS/Call Logs/Wifi Access points, etc to XML files on your SD card which can be re-imported later, just in case the SMS/Etc backups performed are not compatible with your new rom's apps.

Well NOW it's kind of too late you should have made backup BEFORE flashing the Leak, now you can go back but Phone will be like factory reset
Anytime you move from one os version to another, one device to another and sometimes from one rom to another, its always a good idea to go as clean as possible.
The way the system handles the data will have changed, sometimes the location of data changes and it is almost guaranteed that a great many database structures will have changed.
You may get obvious bugs such as fc's and lost finctionality, or some not so obvious bugs like an app not operating or closing quite right, deep sleep issues, data/wifi speed decreases, etc.
Always keep up up to date nandroid backups.
I still use titanium but mostly for either having backups of an app in case an update screws it up or just to have that secondary fallback, just in case. Also for a lot of its extended functions.
My essential apps i keep copies of on my sdcard and when i flash a rom i can very quickly do a fresh, clean install of each one. Titanium has the ability to automate the process, just dont restore any app data unless essential. For data such as contacts, the best way to backup and restore is by using the built in import/export to and from vcard backups. This way it rewrites the data to the new database rather than just copying the entire old database over and using it.

In the past, when I had a Samsung Infuse 4G, MyBackupPro worked wonderfully for backing up apps and data before flashing a new ROM, and painlessly restoring apps and data after flashing a new ROM (by painlessly I mean all at once, as opposed to having to go through and click "restore" for each app and data). However, for whatever reason, MyBackupPro is not playing nicely with my Note 2. I can backup and all that, but restoration never occurs. In fact, most times it won't find the backup to even restore!
So, what is everybody's favorite/easiest way to backup before flashing a new ROM, and restoring after flashing a new ROM? Preferably a free option.
When I was working with the Infuse, I seem to remember lots of developers saying to NEVER restore data after flashing a new ROM. I don't understand why that is. I know people aren't starting their games and stuff over from scratch when they flash a new ROM, especially since many people change ROMs every couple of days.

I use titanium backup. Works great with the note 2.
When they are saying don't restore data they are talking about system data. If you backup everything including system apps and data and restore from that it can wreck havoc.
Just backing up user apps and data is fine to restore, at least I've never had a problem. I would just be wary going between touch wiz and aosp ROMs that could get a little dicey, but between the same type of ROMs(ice cm10.1 to aokp or pacman or aospa) should be fine.

i used Helium (used to be Carbon) by Koush, the creator of CWM and ROM Manager) recently when i switched ROMs. i have always used Titanium Backup, but thought i would try Helium. the process is super easy and went very smoothly.

I believe when it comes to backing up/moving apps + data, time, convenience or money saving should simply stay out of the decision making process. BUY the best there is, spend time to learn how to properly use the tool and that will give you the quickest, most convenient and money saving solution. In other words, this is where you shouldn't be cutting any corners. I would recommend either Titanium Backup Pro or ROM Toolbox Pro.
I bought Helium Premium and it worked beautifully. Now I have no reason not to try every ROM available for this phone. Thanks guys!
My backup pro + root will do the job nice. If you're not seeing your backups try going into settings and check that your backups are going to EXTENT sd.

I've been using titanium backup pro. It works pretty well, and it's pretty fast. Sometimes there are problems accessing my backup folder after a new flash, but restarting and fixing permissions will usually fix it.

did you set the backup location under settings when you redownloaded the app to point to the location of your backup folder?
+1 titanium backup..when restoring after a rom install..make sure to restore only apps never restore apos wirh chemicals system data...you'll have conflicts then.
Titanium backup is the best in my opinion. .you can backup bookmarks, message sms, call logs and even send them to dropbox and restore them just as easy...
I agree that Ti Backup is a good option. I wont say its the best period, but it is the best that I have used.

hey folks, the biggest advantage of having a good android phone is this community support and access to tons of tuning. But also the biggest downside to having to many options is flashing it and re installing all of our apps and configuring them again .
I just wanted to ask fellow members what is the best and easiest way to restore apps and data after a fresh install .
I have tried titanium backup and is a must have tool for me when ever i flash , but are there better stuff out there ?
I used to use Titanium, but now I don't rely on it anymore. I only use "SMS backup and restore" for sms and call logs, and that's all, I only rely on Google Backup, and i log in all the apps that need it. I rarely lose something, except some game progress that do not matter.
A complete clean flash takes me about two hours, from nandroid backup, to google synchronisation and setting all the parameters in the rom and apps.
There really is no better option than Titanium. It does pretty much everything itself, you just have to wait a bit.

After doing it over 100 times in the past years, it really becomes a habit to just backup, make a full wipe, then restore.
Personally after years of trying out (a TON of) ROMs, I now rarely make the switch. Because of that, I actually don't make a lot of backups, just the ones that are necessary like SMS and maybe WiFi passwords. For the apps, I just restore them from the PlayStore.
