Question, how does backing up Apps with programs like Astro and TI or whatever work? Does it just keep you from having to re-download them from the market when you do a full wipe and flash a ROM? If so, does it restore their market link so that they are updateable? Or do they just do app data?
Sorry, I'm confused. I don't normally have much app data, so I just re-download all my apps each time, and was wondering if I was 'doing it wrong'.
And which program is recommended for backups?
I recommend Titanium Backup, but with the caveat that you should do some research to see how it works. It will back up apps, user settings, and even system settings - but that doesn't mean you can just restore them willy-nilly. For instance, if you backup your apps and app settings, then flash a new ROM, then restore those apps and settings, there may be conflicts between the new ROM and the old programs. It's really more of a just-in-case way to back things up. People have also reported that MyBackup works well. I use TI myself.
In fact, please read this article by flipz (he developed the Fresh ROMs).
All it does is basically takes a snapshot of your system. It copies app files and settings databases. Later, you can restore the apps and data (and even things like account settings and scenes if you know what you're looking for) and be back where you were, as long as things work correctly. There are batch operations, but it all still takes a while to be safe and know that you're not restoring things that will break your system.
It's good, but I recommend a complete nandroid backup (ClockworkMod or Amon RA) if you're not jumping around between ROMs. That's really a better "everything" backup method.

I have been rooting for a long time since I had a G1. I never understood clearly how to transfer apps without the need to manually install them. Does creating a partition in the SD card to ext3 or ext4 have some factor to it? I would simply follow directions but didn't understand the process. Whenever I installed a new ROM, sometimes all of the apps would be install automatically and some ROMS would require me to install them manually. I also got Titaniumbackup Pro also. Is that still a good app to use to back up these days? Is there a popular app to back up text messaging as well or does many of the
Lately, I have been trying to find a good rom to use after many crashes of Andromadus V13. I am using the latest Anrdomadus Mimicry now and its great. Though, I realized that I didn't transfer any of my apps. As I was rooting a few ROMS previous to it, some would install a majority of the apps and others would require me to install them myself. Im curious of why this is so.
the auto restore is a function of the market, I don't like this method and choose no when I sign in (don't like wasting time and slowing things down cause of all the data over network or wifi
titanium back is my personal favorite way to restore apps on a new rom, there are other apps that will do this (romtollbox etc) tb will do texts but I have had issues with it

Apps are tied to your Google Play account and normally get automatically re-installed after you start your phone back up after a new ROM. Except, sometimes installing your ROM gives your phone a new "name" and Google Play doesn't know that it's the same phone (even though it's on the same account). So, if you go to Google Play on your computer, you would have more than one choice of phones to download apps to - your old phone name and your new phone name. And I've also had the occasional app out of many that just doesn't re-install for some reason.
Two words : Titanium Backup (though mainly only useful if you can restore your old rom, run a backup, then flash the new rom back).
While google can half-ass restore your downloads (settings may not always be intact), Titanium Backup will actually restore all your backed up apps along with their full settings/etc. It can also restore your rom's Android ID so that restored apps don't conflict.
But yea since you already have it, you should know least that much. Personally I have not found anything better than 4EXT Recovery and Titanium Backup Pro when it comes to backing up and restoring data.
ps: it can backup your SMS/Call Logs/Wifi Access points, etc to XML files on your SD card which can be re-imported later, just in case the SMS/Etc backups performed are not compatible with your new rom's apps.
So I have only a little experience flashing ROMs but I am successfully on CM 10.0 at the moment and everything is working great.
The question I have is, for those people that are constantly flashing new roms, is there a quick and easy way to re-install all your apps and settings without having to do it one by one with every new rom?
I know you can have your contacts/calendar and such in google and I know Titanium Backup is awesome but it gives the occasional mess up when trying to restore some programs to a rom other then the one it was backed up from.
Am I missing another process here that thousands of people do every day to get their phone/apps back into a useable working order after flashing?
I use titanium backup and have never had an issue. only use it to restore user apps and user data never system apps or data, that's where the issues usually come from.
Also use a custom launcher and most of them have backup/restore options that put your home screens back quickly.

In the past, when I had a Samsung Infuse 4G, MyBackupPro worked wonderfully for backing up apps and data before flashing a new ROM, and painlessly restoring apps and data after flashing a new ROM (by painlessly I mean all at once, as opposed to having to go through and click "restore" for each app and data). However, for whatever reason, MyBackupPro is not playing nicely with my Note 2. I can backup and all that, but restoration never occurs. In fact, most times it won't find the backup to even restore!
So, what is everybody's favorite/easiest way to backup before flashing a new ROM, and restoring after flashing a new ROM? Preferably a free option.
When I was working with the Infuse, I seem to remember lots of developers saying to NEVER restore data after flashing a new ROM. I don't understand why that is. I know people aren't starting their games and stuff over from scratch when they flash a new ROM, especially since many people change ROMs every couple of days.

I use titanium backup. Works great with the note 2.
When they are saying don't restore data they are talking about system data. If you backup everything including system apps and data and restore from that it can wreck havoc.
Just backing up user apps and data is fine to restore, at least I've never had a problem. I would just be wary going between touch wiz and aosp ROMs that could get a little dicey, but between the same type of ROMs(ice cm10.1 to aokp or pacman or aospa) should be fine.

i used Helium (used to be Carbon) by Koush, the creator of CWM and ROM Manager) recently when i switched ROMs. i have always used Titanium Backup, but thought i would try Helium. the process is super easy and went very smoothly.

I believe when it comes to backing up/moving apps + data, time, convenience or money saving should simply stay out of the decision making process. BUY the best there is, spend time to learn how to properly use the tool and that will give you the quickest, most convenient and money saving solution. In other words, this is where you shouldn't be cutting any corners. I would recommend either Titanium Backup Pro or ROM Toolbox Pro.
I bought Helium Premium and it worked beautifully. Now I have no reason not to try every ROM available for this phone. Thanks guys!
My backup pro + root will do the job nice. If you're not seeing your backups try going into settings and check that your backups are going to EXTENT sd.

I've been using titanium backup pro. It works pretty well, and it's pretty fast. Sometimes there are problems accessing my backup folder after a new flash, but restarting and fixing permissions will usually fix it.

did you set the backup location under settings when you redownloaded the app to point to the location of your backup folder?
+1 titanium backup..when restoring after a rom install..make sure to restore only apps never restore apos wirh chemicals system data...you'll have conflicts then.
Titanium backup is the best in my opinion. .you can backup bookmarks, message sms, call logs and even send them to dropbox and restore them just as easy...
I agree that Ti Backup is a good option. I wont say its the best period, but it is the best that I have used.

Hello friends,
I'm kinda still new to the whole custom rom world and have a question. I really like flashing and testing new roms but the one thing I hate is having to download all the apps again from the play store, even though it syncs up and starts automatically downloading all of them it's way too time consuming and not to mention uses more data. I was going to see if you guys could recommend a good backup app that would back all my apps and their data up to my SD card so after flashing a new app I could just install the one backup app then use it to restore the apps/data/sms etc. from my SD card. I see several in the play store such as titanium but was wanted to get a few opinions from folks that have more experience. I'd prefer free but would not mind paying a few bucks ..say $3-5 for a good well rounded app.

Titanium is the overall best/most features IMO. Backup/Restore, Uninstall, Freeze apps, etc... I've used it for a long time, and I really like it.

Thanks, I give it a try...I noticed that it has the option to backup app+system. I have a followup question on this regarding backing up the "system info". If I was on rom sokp version 1.5 and made my backups that included the system file and then the sokp team released another version that had bug fixes in it ..lets say V1.7 and I installed it and then did a restore...would restoring the system contents onto the new rom change it back to what I had and end up breaking things that were fixed. Hope this makes since. Lets say bluetooth was broke on my current rom that I've made apps+system backups and then I install V1.7 which fixes the bluetooth...would me restoring the system folder break bluetooth again and whatever else they've fixed. Also, what if I want to kick around another rom...lets say carbon ...would restoring my backups cause it issues.

You can only restore system data to the same or updated versions of a ROM. In most cases, its best to start from scratch with things such as your settings. (Contacts/calendar data should restore ok regardless)
