Hi all,
Ran into some issues with a new phone, hopefully someone can help me out. I've been reading and tried a few things, but no dice. I purchased an unlocked AT&T Galaxy S3 off Ebay, then proceeded to install CWM recovery, take a nandroid backup of stock (v4.0.4), and installed CM 10.2. Upon inserting my T-Mobile sim card and trying to configure the phone, it complained about me needing to insert a sim card and I subsequently noticed that both my Baseband Version, Network, Mobile Network Type, My Phone Number and IMEI are reporting as Unknown.
I've tried restoring my nandroid backup to stock, same items are reporting as Unknown. Trying to flash several stock images with Odin results in 'SW Rev Check Fail: Fused 2 > Binary 0'. I'm guessing this is since CM 10.2 is v4.3. I've tried using NV-items_reader_writer to read/write the IMEI, but it won't connect, complaining 'Phone does not accept SPC. SPC is not correct.' I've run Triangle Away under CM 10.2 with no change to Odin results.
Currently, Download Mode reports:

Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable

Does anyone have any suggestions on next steps?
I have never been able to run cm 10.2. I have tried several times and always get the Sim card error and no signal. I don't know about the imei or the baseband, because I didn't check mine. I am on at&t and have the newest boot loader and modem. I just flashed a different ROM and my phone worked fine, but like I said I don't know what my baseband and imei showed.

Is the model # sgh-i747 according to the phone's label located underneath the battery? Did you try using Odin to install a stock ROM?

correct, the model number is sgh-i747 as shown underneath the battery. i've tried flashing several stock 4.1.1 roms using Odin, but each time i'm greeted with:
Odin Log:

do you have any suggestions on stock roms to try flashing? i think i need 4.3 for the bootloader(?) to allow it, and as far as i can tell there isn't an official 4.3 image for AT&T's i747. perhaps i'll give the 4.3 leak a try, or try flashing a non-CM rom as bellifritz suggests.

Actually cm11 works fine for me as well as quantum. If you want a stock ROM I can find a link to the thread with the stock debloated 4.3 at&t ROM that I am running.

Look through this thread. Scroll down to where it says Roms and the one marked debloated is what I'm running. There is an odedex version and a deodexed version. I'm running the odexed which is closer to stock but without all the at&t stuff.

Thanks for the link. I actually have an i747m and do not want to go near 4.3 because of Knox. Also, I can go back to stock, reset the counters, and keep my warranty.
I am able to install CWM and every 4.4.2 ROM I have tried installs without a problem.

Your phone is an i747 so you should stick with stock AT&T ROMs. There is a stock 4.04 on samfirmware that you can try.
here's what i flashed to fix it:

my baseband/imei etc are no longer unknown and phonecalls work. thanks for the help and ideas, guys.

Something is not right with all that. The only reason you should have that dialogue about fused and binary stuff is with the new 4.3 bootloader, but 4.0.4 firmware is ICS. Be careful what you flash until you know for certain which bootloader you are using.
Galaxy S3 ATT Baseband IMEI Unknown
I have a samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T (I747). AT&T pushed Kitkat 4.4.2 update last night and after installing my phone was stuck at AT&T logo. AT&T says warranty is over, so they can't do anything.
I flashed JB official stock ROM and then multiple other ROMs but my Baseband and IMEI shows 'unknown'.
WIfi connection is working fine, but no network connection. Desperately need help...
Install terminal emulator from play store and enter this:
getprop ro.bootloader
Post here what firmware build it returns. Also which Rom exactly that you are currently running.
Firmware: I747UCUFNE4
It's currently running Android 4.3, Build: JSS15J.I747UCUEMJB
Try flashing one of the KK touchwiz roms. Might be that running the 4.3 rom is giving issues with the NE4 modem. If that doesn't work you may just need to reflash the modem. (You didn't flash the 4.3 modem did you?)
I think i flashed CWM_I747CUEMJB modem. is it good or bad?
once i flash KK Touchwiz ROM, do i need to flash modem also? if yes, which one?
Actually, since you are already on NE4 firmware, but you said you may have flashed the 4.3 modem, that would most likely be the cause of your issue. Try just flashing the NE4 modem and hopefully thatll take care of it for you. I just uploaded it, see below:
NOTE TO ALL!!!!!!
WARNING!!!
WARNING!!!
WARNING!!!
DO NOT FLASH THIS MODEM UNLESS YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE UCUFNE4 FIRMWARE!!!!! THIS WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE IF FLASHED ON 4.3 FIRMWARE!!!!!!!
THIS IS ONLY SAFE TO FLASH IF YOU ARE ON 4.4.2, NE4, I747 FIRMWARE AND BOOTLOADER!!!
ATT_GalaxyS3_UCUFNE4_Modem
maybe a stupid question, but because of your warning just want to confirm:
the terminal command returned the type of boot loader which is NE4. do i need to confirm the firmware also, if yes, how? or is it the same?
Checking the bootloader confirms that you are on that same firmware. So if it said you have the NE4 bootloader, you also have that firmware so you are safe to flash.
---------- Post added at 06:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:10 PM ----------
And its never a stupid question when making sure you fully understand something like this prior to flashing! If in doubt.....ask!
Thanks a lot! it worked. my Baseband and IMEI are back and it's connected to AT&T network.
But the moment i flash modem, WiFi stops working. I tried it multiple times, WiFi works after flashing JB ROM and stops working after flashing Modem. When in settings i try to turn the WiFi on, it turns off automatically.
There is also constant security information: "The device has detected an application attempting to perform action that are not permitted. These actions have been blocked". This also happens on wifi-on action.
Open the SuperSU app and it will ask if you want to disable Knox. Tell it yes and those security notifications will stop.
For wifi, if you are running a 4.4.2 rom, you will need ktoonsez' kt747 kernel. If on a 4.3 rom you need the MJ2 kernel.
Could some one answer a few questions I have on how to go from rooted 4.1.1 to latest build. I have read and DL'd the zip from the "[LEAK] AT&T 4.3 UCUEMJ2 (Root & Knox versions)" thread and was wondering if the the rom can be loaded directly from CM recovery. Is the new bootloader required or optional?
Thanks

Have you checked to see if you can get OTA update or update via the latest version of Kies? I was able to update from 4.1.1 to 4.3 with 2 different pre-rooted i747s - one officially via OTA and the other by flashing the same zips you refer to via cm recovery so maybe that answers your question. Before taking the one-way trip to 4.3, however, be sure you are done messing with your phone at the older firmware including unlocking, if required, as you may not be able to go back.

I'm not aware there is any Odin flashable file for 4.3 yet. You may follow the steps in the link below for manual update via CM...
http://www.smartphonejam.com/2013/1...fficial-android43-i747ucuemjb-ota-update.html
You didn't say if you tried the OTA update? If you want to remain on stock, this is always the safest bet. If you are currently on official 4.1.1 you should be able to get this via WiFi with a valid AT&T sim card in your phone.
Me personally would avoid the official OTA update unless you're absolutely sure you want to keep it. Once you take the bootloader MJB you cannot flash any stock rom anymore unless you have an I747M then you can only flash the official 4.3.
I am on the MJ2 leak bootloader and have no issues, running S3Rx with the MJB modem phone runs great, if something happens I can simply flash anything I want to with Odin.

Exactly. I have also stayed away from the official 4.3. I have no idea why so many people around here just insist that their phone be on the latest update. Ok, the ones that had some major issues previously I could see, and yes you're going to have your exceptions whose phones will work just fine on 4.3. But all this 4.3 has done is create even more issues, with no flash-able firmware to go back to when something goes wrong. Some say there is no major reason not to update, but I say that there is no major reason to update, as most never give a reason to why they want to update. I just don't get it, other than these updates have become like new toys, just something new to play with.

shortydoggg thanks for your post and you actually hit the nail on the head. I can't think of reason I NEED to update, I just get bored and like to play. My warranty is up so voiding that isn't an issue and my 4.1.1 runs just fine, but by playing I learn so I like to play. 4.3 has a few nice features but if prevents the phone from being re-flashed then the risks most-likely aren't worth the benefits. I am just doing my due diligence, researching and asking questions. I really appreciate all the input and advice I get from forums such as this so I can make an intelligent decision.

If you really want to try and want it to be reversible you can use the 4.3 leaked MJ2 bootloader if you decide you don't like the 4.3 stuff you can simply Odin back to stock. But if you use the MJB bootloader you cannot.

You're on the MJ2 leak bootloader you can use Odin to flash a stock image on the phone if you can get it into download/Odin mode.

Thanks. It does get into download mode. Is there an Odin flashable file for the MJ2 and, if so, where can I find this? I'm wary about flashing an older ROM (e.g. 4.1.1) to avoid any further conflicts as I still have the official MJB modem or can this be done safely?
I've tried clearing the system and reflashing but it was the same result or perhaps I wasn't doing this the right way?

I have been told by very reliable sources that you can Odin to an older version safely regardless of modem as long as the bootloader isn't MJB or MK5 so I am pretty confident it is safe. At this point there isn't too much to loose.

Odining to an older ROM is apparently not an option as this is isn't working. Thankfully, the phone is still booting into both download and recovery modes without difficulty so there is hope. I flashed CWM recovery via Odin thinking the problem may perhaps be with TWRP. However, the result was the same and the phone kept booting back into recovery mode rather than to the system. I also tried to see if was the bootloader so I flashed the MJB bootloader as well as reflashed the MJ2 system zip. The flashings were successful so, at least, it's unlikely to be a bootloader conflict but still the system will not boot.
Will greatly appreciate steers from the community on how to get the thing back working. n Thanks

Finally got it back up and running today. Cant be sure what really led to the soft brick but I simply wiped out everything in TWRP mode and then re-flashed the (MJ2) system, modem and kernel zips. This time it worked, I'd tried the same thing before but without the kernel. Now I'm back to the same configuration as before.
Can I safely downgrade from 4.4.2 to Stock 4.1.1 if I am still on the MG2 bootloader? I know that 4.3 OTA makes this impossible, but I don't THINK I did the OTA. I believe MG2 is the bootloader from the 4.1.2 days. Can anyone confirm?

Get terminal emulator and type in:
Code:
su
getprop ro.bootloader
That will tell you which bootloaders you have.
Anything over 4.1.2 isn't safe to downgrade from.
It says:
Code:
I747UCDMG2
How does that translate to versions? Is that 4.1.2? Over? Under?

Search is fun It's 4.1.2.
You can downgrade to 4.1.1 from it. I'm assuming you're doing that to unlock? If so, you can upgrade your bootloaders afterward w/o losing the unlock (just a fyi).
Do you want to downgrade in order to sim unlock your phone? That's what I did with my Bell s3. Saved me $30.
Just a quick FYI, you shouldn't need to fully downgrade your firmware. Just flashing the 4.1.1 modem should suffice.
And since I know someone will ask, doing this will not work if you've updated to 4.3 or beyond.
In my own defense, I used the Google but was unable to find anything that definitively said one equals the other. It's nice to get the confirmation.
I am downloading 4.1.1 stock now. After some Odin fun, (and crossing of fingers), we'll see if it works. Thanks for the help.

Downgraded to 4.1.1 stock through Odin and...IT WORKED! One small hitch that was easy to overcome. When the Odin flash was done, the phone rebooted to a soft brick at the Samsung logo. Booted into Recovery, did a factory reset and cleared cache. That fixed it. So I have a pure 4.1.1 Stock system now.
Next question: once I'm done with the unlock process, I assume I root it, flash back to my old modem (MG2) and restore my old system? Also, is there any advantage of upgrading my modem to something newer? Or should I just stick with what has been working for the last 6 months?

If you upgrade your modem/baseband, you gotta upgrade your bootloaders as well. Now that you're unlocked, there's no real reason not to upgrade but it what you got works fine, you can stick with it as well.
Factory reset is indeed needed when using Odin (as you noticed). Also, you can restore your backup once you're back on the same baseband/bootloaders the backup was made on.
SO since I updated my bootloader a while ago I forgot which I was on, but now have a need to use this phone with a different SIM card at times. I am using C-Rom 4.4.2. I ran getprop ro.bootloader and I have I747UCUEMJ2.
Would the following process get me back to where I am right now, just unlocked?
1) Make a nandroid backup
2) Odin stock 4.1.1 UCDLK3 (download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423)
3) Unlock using free method
4) Root the rom (assuming can towelroot be used)
5) Install new TWRP recovery with Goo Manager
6) Flash MJ2 bootloader (MJ2bootloader/MJBmodem from Enewman here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197286 assuming I would need to do this)
7) Restore nandroid

After unlocking, you can use Odon to install a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from XDA and TWRP or Philz Touch from Odin (depending on which one you used to create your nandroid backup). Root isn't required if you use Odin to flash a custom recovery.

You can downgrade to 4.1.1 from it. I'm assuming you're doing that to unlock? If so, you can upgrade your bootloaders afterward w/o losing the unlock (just a fyi).

Would someone care to explain how to get the version of the bootloader from the terminator emulator ?!?
I have a Galaxy S3 on 4.4.2 and I need the same info as the OP.
My version is T999VVLDMF2
Thanks.

I already did that, please read my post again and the original post from first page.
This forum is for the i747 which is the AT&T version of the s3. I think the t999 is the tmobile version. The info in this thread would relate to the att version.
The bootloader labeling for the att s3 and tmobile s3 are different.

I can only assume there is a way to tell which bootloader one has by looking at the bootloader number and running it through some kind of software

bootloader is mg2 which corresponds to android version 4.1.2. i think on the samsung website or maybe android website i saw a chart with which versions corresponds with which bootloaders. (although that might only roughly apply , as i was on NE4 but not running KK ).

You're in the wrong subforum but MF2 is 4.1.2 (yay for google). Which means, you should be safe to downgrade to 4.1.1 from it. That being said, I duno much about the T999V.
Also if you read back to my first reply to this thread, I gave the solution.

Thanks a lot for your time guys.
Been digging through old posts, im in same situation as OP was, but does anyone have a link for Stock 4.1.1? Root is non-issue. would rather not pay for sammobile.
Hello everyone,
I have searched the site for some ways to unlock my device. I am running liquidsmooth 4.4.4 and as far as I know there is no way to unlock customs Roms running 4.3/4.4, unless you go back to the original stock rom and use either AT&T or third party site unlock code. So, I called AT&T and they provided me with the unlock code and they told me the same thing, the unlock code will not work until you go back to the original factory stock rom!
So, I have been searching here for the right 4.3 stock rom and I found out many posts and I got confused which to use. I would highly appropriate it if any one can help me and direct me to the right source/process for 4.3 stock rom steps and installation so I won't brick my phone.
Thanks in advance

If your bootloaders are on 4.4, you can't downgrade them (or you'll brick!).
You can use Terminal Emulator to know which one you're on:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
Once you know which one you have, you can go ahead and grab its stock version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625
i think this thread provides stock downloads.
good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I checked the bootloader as you said and I got ( I747UCDLK3 ). So, I am guessing that I am still on 4.3 because the last bootloader update was through this process:

I tried to flash the stock file update4.3.zip on that thread using TWRP but it did not work.

LK3 is 4.1.1. I'm guessing the 4.3 bootloaders update didn't work at all.
Now that you know you have LK3, just grab the stock firmware and flash it. (backup first)

This is really strange. So, if I may ask, how my bootloader is still 4.1.1 and I am able to flash 4.3/4.4 roms? Also, if I install I747UCDLK3 can I go back to 4.3 custom roms without updating the bootloader!!! because that what I did last time I follwed the steps in below web site to be able to flash 4.3 rom,,,,, but apparently I am still on 4.1.1 bootloader!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
4.3 roms could still be flashed on older firmware. 4.4 roms too as long as they are not touchwiz. If its a touchwiz 4.4.2 rom you must have at least 4.3 firmware though.
Hi i want to know if i can flash an original 4.3 firmware my bootloader is I747MVLUFNE6 can i go back or i will brick my phone if i tried?
No you cannot downgrade firmware. You can only flash the same or newer builds. Or you can flash older roms and kernels, but nothing else.

If you are still on the original bootloader and modem you should be able to revert to stock 4.1.1 by simply restoring the backup from your recovery. Before you attempt to do so verify that you are indeed on the 4.1.1 bootloader. This can be done with the Phone Info *Samsung* app by VndNguyen (?sp) from the playstore or by a couple of terminal emulator commands:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
getprop | grep version.baseband
If you do not already have terminal emulator installed, it may have come with the ROM, you can get it from the Playstore. It may also be a part of CWM recovery, it is part of TWRP I know for sure.
If it turns out you are on a newer bootloader and modem then go with a stock ROM that matches the bootloader and modem on the phone. To run a lollypop rom you will need to be on at least the NE4 bootloader and modem.
Thanks for a very helpful reply. I m going to follow your instructions. Will soon replay. Thanks again.

You are currently running the LK3 bootloader and modem. If I am not mistaken that's a pretty old one (original?). You will have to update to NE4 or newer firmware before you can flash any of the newer roms. They will not boot in the older ones.
Your firmware is actually the only one available for download so I recommend flashing it via Odin and factory resetting. Then update using the Software Update option in Settings > About Device.
You can download your LK3 firmware here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747/
You may have to run Software update several times to fully update.
That is probably the safest and easiest course you can take.
After that, flash the latest custom recovery of your choice, then flash the rom you want.

BTW, after flashing the LK3 firmware, you might want to consider using the free Sim unlock method. (Should be pretty easy to find).
Once you update past 4.3 you can no longer use it. It will allow the device to be used on other carriers networks, which can be beneficial if you ever want to sell it or switch carriers.

What DocHoliday77 suggests is probably the safest method to get what you want. After each update the system will force you to wait 24 hours before you can make the next update. That would be three days to get to NE4, the first 4.4.2 release by AT&T, which you need to run lollipop ROMs. If you want to update to the current release (NJ2) that would be two additional days.
You can shortcut the required waiting period by manually advancing the system date after each update.
In addition to not allowing you to use the free unlock, once you take the 4.3 bootloader it prevents you from downgrading bootloaders. Newer bootloaders do the same, downgrading will be a thing of the past. (I never took the official 4.3 bootloader until the stagefright scare came along and I went from my older custom ROM to a new release.)

1:- Okay I fully understood what I have to do to flash lolly pop . But confused a little bit . If I have original boodloader than it should be easier to restore my stock 4.1.1 . Backup (still not clear) .
2:- I am out of USA. The device in unlocked. I am using ZONG sim on it. So the question is can I still update the device via OTA.
Thanks

When you say original bootloader I don't know which you have. My i747 came with 4.1.1 but before I could get it out of the clerk's hands they had taken the OTA to change it from DLK3/4.1.1 bootloader and stock rom to MG2/4.1.2 bootloader and stock rom. Even more confusing I have read reviews that state the SGS3 was originally released with android 4.0.4.
If your original bootloader was older than 4.3 (MJB) AND you have never upgraded to MJB or newer, then you can safely return to stock 4.1.1.
To get OTAs you need to be on the stock ROM, at least you do in the USA. I don't know if that holds true elsewhere.
I can confirm the S3 was originally shipped with 4.0.4! We were updated pretty quickly though.
As for the OTA'S, you do have to be full stock, not rooted. But you also have to be on AT&T network.
I don't know how far back the OTA'S are hosted around here, but enewman17 has several threads that provide the more recent ones. Hopefully someone will have the older ones. If I am not mistaken, you will have to update incrementally once you reach 4.3. (it's probably safe to jump straight to a 4.3 build if you can find the right firmware for it. But don't hold me to that as I am not 100% certain.
I'll look to see if I can find something you can use too.

I got this while searching online. Please tell me if it is helpful for.me.
http://androidromupdate.com/att-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747-odin-stock-firmware/
Never been to that site, but it looks OK to me. Nice find in fact! All the usual firmware sites stopped getting the AT&T firmware a while back.
Anyway, just to clarify, LK3 is 4.1.1. UCDLK3 is just the build number.
If you want to get fully updated, I suggest Odin flashing the MJB (4.3) firmware. Then flash each of the OTA's until you are updated to where you want to be. (I would fully update, but that'll be up to you.) The OTA'S are intended to be flashed from stock recovery, but there is another option if you want to try it. Mobile Odin is an app by chainfire. It does require you to be rooted, but it will flash the OTA. Read his thread here on xda to learn more. It's one of my favorite apps tbh! Once you learn how to use it it makes flashing quite easy.
So my recommendation would be this:
Flash MJB with Odin.
Root using Towelroot (easiest root ever)
Install Mobile Odin and flash the OTA'S.
I hope that clears things up a bit!

To be able to run a lollipop rom you will need to update bootloader and modem. Update them together, this is important once you reach the 4.4.2 level of bootloader and modem that you will need to run lollipop roms. Once you reach 4.4.2 you will brick your phone if the bootloader and modem versions are not the same.
Before starting to flash any of the files you need to get you up and running on lollipop, I strongly suggest you download all you need from start to finish. Store the files you will need in the upgrade process either on an external sdcard or on the root of your internal sdcard. I haven't used CWM Recovery on my SGS3 since shortly after rooting it, I have been using TWRP since then, and I don't recall all of the capabilities of CWM recovery. If the CWM version you have will not let you flash from an external sdcard you will need to store the files you will use on the root of the internal card to be able to flash them. It will be easier to do this before you start, unless you are comfortable with pushing files from a computer using adb.
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING I AM SUGGESTING read enough that you thoroughly understand what I am saying. After reading, ask questions for clarification. Be sure you have no doubts.
Decide if you intend to install a rom along with the bootloader and modem at each upgrade; or if you are going to install updating only bootloader and modem until you get them to them point that you can run a lollipop ROM. Since you said you can not do OTA updates, either way will work. Whichever you decide, you can not skip directly to the bootloader and modem you need for lollipop.
If you are installing bootloader and modems without the rom:
From the stock 4.1.1 rom and bootloader you can go straight to 4.3 bootloader and modem, skipping the 4.1.2 (MG2) version. I have personally done this with no ill consequences. After 4.3, install the first bootloader and modem version for 4.4.2, that is NE4. Lollipop will run with the NE4 bootloader. As DocHoliday stated, you can go on the the current bootloader and modem. After NE4 is NJ1. After NJ1 you come to the current bootloader and modem, which is NJ2
If you plan to install the full ROM at each step.
The page you linked to should work if all of the downloads are available. Go from 4.1.1 to 4.3 to 4.4.2 (NE4). If you want the newer versions (NJ1 or NJ2) do them in sequence, do not skip any that are mentioned. Read the instructions on your linked page carefully. If you want NJ1 and then NJ2 they can be found in threads by enewman17, as can NE4 and maybe 4.3. I didn't provide the links so that you will hopefully read the pages carefully after searching and before downloading. Be sure you understand what you are downloading to flash and how it should be used.

Thanks **** I need to be extra careful before taking any step. I am going to collect all relesed OTA,s. By now I onky need the links for ota. Thanks
Flash MJB and NE4 from the site you linked to above. Then use enewman17's thread for the NJ1 and NJ2 updates. He also has NE4, in case you want to get all the OTA'S from him. (Downloads will be a lot faster) They've all been used many times. I'll try to post a direct link in a few...

I got this site having all ota, s . And is linked to the enewman17.
www.androidayos.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-stock-firmware-2/
Lol, I guess they thought they had to provide it somehow! It's a shame they didn't at least acknowledge enewman17 in their article there, but at least they direct linked to his thread.
Anyway, good luck! And if you have any other questions come up, let us know.
