[Q] Back to 4.3 Stock Rom to Unlock the phone?? HELP - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello everyone,
I have searched the site for some ways to unlock my device. I am running liquidsmooth 4.4.4 and as far as I know there is no way to unlock customs Roms running 4.3/4.4, unless you go back to the original stock rom and use either AT&T or third party site unlock code. So, I called AT&T and they provided me with the unlock code and they told me the same thing, the unlock code will not work until you go back to the original factory stock rom!
So, I have been searching here for the right 4.3 stock rom and I found out many posts and I got confused which to use. I would highly appropriate it if any one can help me and direct me to the right source/process for 4.3 stock rom steps and installation so I won't brick my phone.
Thanks in advance

If your bootloaders are on 4.4, you can't downgrade them (or you'll brick!).
You can use Terminal Emulator to know which one you're on:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
Once you know which one you have, you can go ahead and grab its stock version.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625
i think this thread provides stock downloads.
good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I checked the bootloader as you said and I got ( I747UCDLK3 ). So, I am guessing that I am still on 4.3 because the last bootloader update was through this process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
I tried to flash the stock file update4.3.zip on that thread using TWRP but it did not work.
Any idea?
Thanks again

Thanks for your kind reply. Is there any different to choose between the download options. I know it says the first one is the newest one, I am downloading
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496425
So I hope it is the right one!?
I already have the stock rom 4.3 from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
But as I said on the previous reply not sure why I can't flash the update43.zip through the recovery?
Best,,,,

LK3 is 4.1.1. I'm guessing the 4.3 bootloaders update didn't work at all.
Now that you know you have LK3, just grab the stock firmware and flash it. (backup first)

thanks @BWolf56.

This is really strange. So, if I may ask, how my bootloader is still 4.1.1 and I am able to flash 4.3/4.4 roms? Also, if I install I747UCDLK3 can I go back to 4.3 custom roms without updating the bootloader!!! because that what I did last time I follwed the steps in below web site to be able to flash 4.3 rom,,,,, but apparently I am still on 4.1.1 bootloader!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423

4.3 roms could still be flashed on older firmware. 4.4 roms too as long as they are not touchwiz. If its a touchwiz 4.4.2 rom you must have at least 4.3 firmware though.

Hi i want to know if i can flash an original 4.3 firmware my bootloader is I747MVLUFNE6 can i go back or i will brick my phone if i tried?

No you cannot downgrade firmware. You can only flash the same or newer builds. Or you can flash older roms and kernels, but nothing else.

Downgrading from 4.4.x to 4.3

I was wondering if I may run into any problems by doing this.
I know that on an AT&T phone (i747), if you do that, you may lose your modem and needs to be reflashed (you get a null IMEI)
Is it the same on a SGH-T999? I was planning to flash this ROM:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=26636
Thanks
There is no 4.4.2 to downgrade from for the T999.
If you just have a 4.4.2 Rom, you don't need to do anything.
The firmware you linked is the latest available so you can flash it regardless of what you have now.
There is no 4.4.2 update for the T999 so yes you can flash it but it is not a ROM, it is firmware, please do not confuse these two they are very different!
Yeah... I'm afraid I am confused. What I did was to flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690947
Isn't that a ROM?
However I would like to go back to 4.3, so I was just wondering if I could have any problems.
Sorry for the noob questions. I think it was clear to me, but I'm afraid it's not...
Thanks
Yes that is a rom, what you linked to in the first post is firmware which contains more than just the system and that is where you run into problems when downgrading

Yes, flash the link you provided in the first post or flash a 4.3 rom.. Understand this, flashing a rom will not determine if you can downgrade or not, flashing firmware will. Since there is no 4.4 firmware for the T999 you can still flash the 4.3 firmware. If there was a 4.4 firmware and you took the OTA or updated via Odin then the only thing you could do is flash a 4.3 rom, firmware will not be an option
Edit: oh and btw I accidently pressed the thanks button so you got a free one

[Q] Downgrading from 4.4.2 with MG2 Bootloader to 4.1.1 Stock LK3

Can I safely downgrade from 4.4.2 to Stock 4.1.1 if I am still on the MG2 bootloader? I know that 4.3 OTA makes this impossible, but I don't THINK I did the OTA. I believe MG2 is the bootloader from the 4.1.2 days. Can anyone confirm?

Get terminal emulator and type in:
Code:
su
getprop ro.bootloader
That will tell you which bootloaders you have.
Anything over 4.1.2 isn't safe to downgrade from.
It says:
Code:
I747UCDMG2
How does that translate to versions? Is that 4.1.2? Over? Under?

Search is fun It's 4.1.2.
You can downgrade to 4.1.1 from it. I'm assuming you're doing that to unlock? If so, you can upgrade your bootloaders afterward w/o losing the unlock (just a fyi).
Do you want to downgrade in order to sim unlock your phone? That's what I did with my Bell s3. Saved me $30.
Just a quick FYI, you shouldn't need to fully downgrade your firmware. Just flashing the 4.1.1 modem should suffice.
And since I know someone will ask, doing this will not work if you've updated to 4.3 or beyond.
In my own defense, I used the Google but was unable to find anything that definitively said one equals the other. It's nice to get the confirmation.
I am downloading 4.1.1 stock now. After some Odin fun, (and crossing of fingers), we'll see if it works. Thanks for the help.

Downgraded to 4.1.1 stock through Odin and...IT WORKED! One small hitch that was easy to overcome. When the Odin flash was done, the phone rebooted to a soft brick at the Samsung logo. Booted into Recovery, did a factory reset and cleared cache. That fixed it. So I have a pure 4.1.1 Stock system now.
Next question: once I'm done with the unlock process, I assume I root it, flash back to my old modem (MG2) and restore my old system? Also, is there any advantage of upgrading my modem to something newer? Or should I just stick with what has been working for the last 6 months?

If you upgrade your modem/baseband, you gotta upgrade your bootloaders as well. Now that you're unlocked, there's no real reason not to upgrade but it what you got works fine, you can stick with it as well.
Factory reset is indeed needed when using Odin (as you noticed). Also, you can restore your backup once you're back on the same baseband/bootloaders the backup was made on.
SO since I updated my bootloader a while ago I forgot which I was on, but now have a need to use this phone with a different SIM card at times. I am using C-Rom 4.4.2. I ran getprop ro.bootloader and I have I747UCUEMJ2.
Would the following process get me back to where I am right now, just unlocked?
1) Make a nandroid backup
2) Odin stock 4.1.1 UCDLK3 (download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423)
3) Unlock using free method
4) Root the rom (assuming can towelroot be used)
5) Install new TWRP recovery with Goo Manager
6) Flash MJ2 bootloader (MJ2bootloader/MJBmodem from Enewman here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197286 assuming I would need to do this)
7) Restore nandroid

After unlocking, you can use Odon to install a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from XDA and TWRP or Philz Touch from Odin (depending on which one you used to create your nandroid backup). Root isn't required if you use Odin to flash a custom recovery.

This forum is for the i747 which is the AT&T version of the s3. I think the t999 is the tmobile version. The info in this thread would relate to the att version.
The bootloader labeling for the att s3 and tmobile s3 are different.

You're in the wrong subforum but MF2 is 4.1.2 (yay for google). Which means, you should be safe to downgrade to 4.1.1 from it. That being said, I duno much about the T999V.
Also if you read back to my first reply to this thread, I gave the solution.

[Q] Network unlock request unsuccessful (SGH-I747M - Running SlimKat 4.4.4)

Just purchased an unlock code from Telus but it does not work. I know some posts mentioned it only works with a stock dialer app.
Is there anything else I can try before attempting that?
If not, what stock rom can I even use? And is there a guide available?
Sorry if this has been asked before. I had trouble finding any answers.
Thank you.
Just flash your stock firmware with Odin.
The boot loader on your phone will determine which firmware to load on your phone.
If you have the 4.3 bootloader, don't flash 4.1.1 or 4.1.2.
Flashed stock rom, booted with sim inserted, and entered the unlock code when asked. It worked! Thanks for the reassurance, I was hesitant.
Here are some links I came across that might help others.
Downloaded latest ROM for my carrier: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I747m

Then I thanked everyone I could! :victory:
Notes
* I forgot to wipe my device before and it still worked.
* TWRP would not read my SD card for some reason.
* Good info threads:

Glad to hear you got it to work! Couple things for extra knowledge. ..
You can also get firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmwares. Their downloads are much faster than samsung-updates IME.
Easiest root method ever! - Towelroot (shouldn't trip the warranty bit either)
If I'm not mistaken, the recoveries having problems reading the sd card is due to your hardware version. I believe they found a solution in the Sprint forums, but I haven't had a chance to read up on it yet. If its something I can do I'll probably try to fix the T-Mobile and AT&T recoveries. I may be mistaken on some of that, but its how I understood it after a quick search the other day.
Need help for flashing stock rom
Hi,
Can you please clarify few things for me?
I have an ATT Galaxy S3 (SGH-i747).
I am running CM11 Android 4.4.4 Baseband I747UCDMG2.
I need to go back to stock to SIM unlock the phone.
Latest ATT stock rom is 4.1.1 with I747UCDLK3.
Will flashing to stock ATT ROM brick the phone?
What is the best way to go back to stock ROM?

Thanks for quick reply.
Bootloader on mine is I747UCDMG2 which is from 4.1.2. Hence I should be ok to go to stock 4.1.1 ROM.
I am reading few other posts before making the move.
Flashing the USA version of the s3 (i747) with any i747 firmware from sammobile in Odin can brick your phone us you have a 4.3 bootloader or higher.
Since you are on 4.1.2 bootloader, flash the stock ATT 4.1.1 ROM from sammobile.com using Odin. After flashing, do a full wipe in recovery. Boot the phone and use the free method to permanently sim unlock your phone.
After unlocking your phone, you can run OTA updates to get to the latest stock ROM, bootloader, and modem.
Just confirmed bootloader and baseband are I747UCDMG2.
I will update here how everthing goes.
PS: I DON'T want to go to I747UCUEMJB bootloader after unlock. That will mean, I will not be able to downgrade in future. AFAIK, I747UCUEMJB bootloader is also locked.

correct in that you will not be able to downgrade (serious risk of bricking your device).
bootloader is not locked on the S3 AFAIK. (bricked my s3 on mj2 trying to 'unlock' an already unlocked bootloader.).

I agree that the bootloader is unlocked.
I think at times people are calling the newer bootloaders locked because they are unable to downgrade them. Whereas we are calling them unlocked because we can still root them and flash custom/unsigned ROMs.
ATT has been locking the bootloader on other phones such as the Note 3, HTC One XL, and the Moto G so I'm not surprised that owners think their bootloader is locked.

Thanks all for the assurance and support.
I was able to ODIN to stock ROM and SIM unlock the phone.
Background: My ATT S3 i747 was running CM11 Android 4.4.4. Baseband and Bootloader was I747UCDMG2.
Steps:
1. Flashed rooted stock ROM (root66_ATT_I747UCDLK3.7z) using odin from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Followed the steps in OP.
After flash ODIN showed PASS and phone rebooted. It was stuck in Samsung logo. I booted into recovery. Performed a wipe cache and factory restore.
Phone rebooted successfully after that.
2. Inserted non-ATT SIM and it asked for the unlock code. I had obtained the code from ATT before. Used the code and phone was unlocked.
The same code did not work while I was running CM11.
NOTE: When running stock ROM you can follow steps in below threads if direct unlock did not work for you.

Revert to stock.. help

Hi all, it's been a long while since I've done anything custom on any of my phones.. I pulled out my old T-Mobile S3, and it has CM10 on it, I got an unlock code from T-Mobile so that I can use the phone on AT&T... the code from them doesn't work and I assume it's because I'm not stock. I want to revert to stock and try the unlock code again before I call them back to get a different code.
I have found some stock roms out there but they are from 2012 and I'm not sure what the best route would be for reverting and unrooting. I don't care about the flash counter so it can show a 1 for all I care, I just need to go back to stock in the correct way.
I assume I'll need to reflash a stock kernel and stock rom, but I'd like to be sure I get the right stuff and do it the right way. Anything you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance.
Flash stock firmware with Odin and unlock, make sure it was successful and go about your business. Since you have cm10 I imagine it is probably on 4.1.1 firmware at the latest.. Go into terminal emulator and type getprop ro.bootloader.. Some people have had issues unlocking with 4.3 firmware so this will determine which firmware would be best for you to flash back to for the unlock

My getprop just says "T999UVDMD5" and as far as I can tell, the version of CM10 is 10.1.3 based on Android 4.2.2.
I can't seem to find that stock Tmo rom, samsung just lists T999UVUENC2 and T999UVUEMJC. I'm waiting for the latest to download now, the older one didn't work from any mirror I tried, but both are newer than the type that is on there. I'm not sure if any of this matters..
I'll get one of them and flash with odin once it's downloaded, see if I have any issues.
Thanks, I'll update on if I was successful or not tomorrow.
No do not flash the latest! As I said before, some people have had issues unlocking with 4.3 even with codes straight from T-Mobile. There is a thread stickied in development with the list of firmwares and MD5 should be there, download it and flash it, after that do the unlock

Downgrading from Android 5.1.1 to Android 4.1

I have Pac Rom Android 5.1.1 installed on my rooted sg3 and I need to do a carrier unlock. I contacted ATT to get the unlock code and the code they provided didn't work. Now I want to downgrade to Android 4.1 and try the UMTS menu trick as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176719
I have tried Odin many times (with many versions, different computers, USB cables, etc) and every time Odin fails to flash Android 4.1. with a Fail AUTH error. I have used Odin successfully in the past many times with this phone but am unable to get it to work this time around.
Does anyone know how to downgrade the sg3 from 5.1.1 to 4.1? Or even better does anyone how to carrier unlock the sg3 when it has 5.1.1 installed on it?
Thanks!
Odin is probably failing because you have a 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader on your phone. I recommend you not flash anymore ROMs using Odin as repeat attempts to flash the 4.1.1 ROM via Odin may hard brick the phone.
Once a phone is running and 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader, you cannot use the free/hidden menu method to unlock the phone.
You cannot use a custom ROM to enter an unlock code. You'll have to go back to a stock ROM, enter the code, and return to a custom ROM.
Thanks for the reply. Do you know how I can go back to stock 4.1.1 without using Odin?
You need the 4.1.1 bootloader in order to use the free method. Once a phone is on 4.3 bootloader or higher, you can't go back to 4.1.1. Don't try because attempts to do so could brick the phone.
A stock 4.1.1 rom on a 4.3 bootloader will not work.
So you're saying once the sg3 is on a version above 4.3 there is no way to go back to 4.1.1?

Once it is on the 4.3 or higher bootloader, there is no going back to an older bootloader and it is the older 4.1.1 bootloader and stock 4.1.1 ROM that is required to unlock using the free method.
Since you have the code, you can flash a stock ROM from recovery.

Thanks. What do you mean by free method?
Also you suggesting if I put the 4.1.1 stock rom .zip on my sg3 I can flash it via CWM just like I would the latest 5.1.1 Pac Rom release?
The free method is the method you linked in your original post. This is the only free method available and it requires a 4.1.1 bootloader that your phone doesn't have. Installing 4.1.1 via cwm is not going to help you unlock it.
Since you have the code, you can flash a stock ROM from recovery.

How would I do this? Do I just flash 4.1.1 from cwm?
Flashing 4.1.1 onto your phone will not allow you to enter the code.
Before flashing anything, you need to verify the bootloader that is running on your phone. Until you do that, I would not flash any bootloaders or modems. An incompatible modem/bootloader combination can also brick your phone.
Sorry, one last question.
You'll have to go back to a stock ROM, enter the code, and return to a custom ROM.

How can I go back to the stock rom?
You can flash a stock rom from the general thread using twrp or cwm.
Awesome, thanks again. I was worried about going that route since I'm on 5.1.1 but I'll give it a shot

When you pick a stock ROM, make sure you pick one with the same bootloader and modem that are currently on your device. You probably have either the NE4 or NJ1 bootloader and modem pair. You DO NOT have a 5.1.1 bootloader and modem, they do not exist for the SGS3. Check your versions from a Terminal Emulator app or check them with the Phone Info - Samsung - app from the PlayStore.
Both NE4 and NJ1 stock ROMs are available in the forum. enewman17 posted them form image dumps, they have been used successfully by many.
The Terminal Emulator commands are:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
getprop | grep version.baseband
Thanks, I did this and both the bootloader and modem ended with NJ1 so I downloaded UCUFNJ1_Rooted.zip from enewman17's thread using CWM 6.0.4. The flash was successful but now the phone is frozen at the AT&T logo when I turn it on.
Any thoughts as to why its stuck booting up?

More than once I have seen reports of this happening when going from a 5.x.x ROM back to 4.4.x. The most common solution has been to include formating the internal sdcard before flashing the stock ROM.
If I flash the sd card as well I will lose the UCUFNJ1_Rooted.zip file. So in that case should I use adb via CWM to flash it?

Put the zip file on the external sdcard and then flash it with your recovery.
I actually didn't have an external SD card. I wound up taking it to the ATT store that had an ATT repair shop inside it and they reset it back to stock 4.4 for me and now everything works great! After unlocking the carrier on the phone I did have to manually enter the t-mobile APN to get the data connection working but that was simple (the info is listed on t-mobile's site)

Glad to see you are up and running. Also glad to hear the AT&T guys helped out.
