[Q] Baseband Version & IMEI Unknown - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
Ran into some issues with a new phone, hopefully someone can help me out. I've been reading and tried a few things, but no dice. I purchased an unlocked AT&T Galaxy S3 off Ebay, then proceeded to install CWM recovery, take a nandroid backup of stock (v4.0.4), and installed CM 10.2. Upon inserting my T-Mobile sim card and trying to configure the phone, it complained about me needing to insert a sim card and I subsequently noticed that both my Baseband Version, Network, Mobile Network Type, My Phone Number and IMEI are reporting as Unknown.
I've tried restoring my nandroid backup to stock, same items are reporting as Unknown. Trying to flash several stock images with Odin results in 'SW Rev Check Fail: Fused 2 > Binary 0'. I'm guessing this is since CM 10.2 is v4.3. I've tried using NV-items_reader_writer to read/write the IMEI, but it won't connect, complaining 'Phone does not accept SPC. SPC is not correct.' I've run Triangle Away under CM 10.2 with no change to Odin results.
Currently, Download Mode reports:
SGH-I747
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
Warranty Bit: 1
Bootloader RP SWREV: 2

Does anyone have any suggestions on next steps?

I have never been able to run cm 10.2. I have tried several times and always get the Sim card error and no signal. I don't know about the imei or the baseband, because I didn't check mine. I am on at&t and have the newest boot loader and modem. I just flashed a different ROM and my phone worked fine, but like I said I don't know what my baseband and imei showed.

Is the model # sgh-i747 according to the phone's label located underneath the battery? Did you try using Odin to install a stock ROM?

correct, the model number is sgh-i747 as shown underneath the battery. i've tried flashing several stock 4.1.1 roms using Odin, but each time i'm greeted with:
Odin Log:
<ID:0/005> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/005> FAIL! (Auth)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

do you have any suggestions on stock roms to try flashing? i think i need 4.3 for the bootloader(?) to allow it, and as far as i can tell there isn't an official 4.3 image for AT&T's i747. perhaps i'll give the 4.3 leak a try, or try flashing a non-CM rom as bellifritz suggests.

Actually cm11 works fine for me as well as quantum. If you want a stock ROM I can find a link to the thread with the stock debloated 4.3 at&t ROM that I am running.

Look through this thread. Scroll down to where it says Roms and the one marked debloated is what I'm running. There is an odedex version and a deodexed version. I'm running the odexed which is closer to stock but without all the at&t stuff.

Thanks for the link. I actually have an i747m and do not want to go near 4.3 because of Knox. Also, I can go back to stock, reset the counters, and keep my warranty.
I am able to install CWM and every 4.4.2 ROM I have tried installs without a problem.

Your phone is an i747 so you should stick with stock AT&T ROMs. There is a stock 4.04 on samfirmware that you can try.

here's what i flashed to fix it:
philz_touch_6.07.9-d2att.zip
cm11 snapshot
modem_CWM_I747UCUEMJB.zip
my baseband/imei etc are no longer unknown and phonecalls work. thanks for the help and ideas, guys.

Something is not right with all that. The only reason you should have that dialogue about fused and binary stuff is with the new 4.3 bootloader, but 4.0.4 firmware is ICS. Be careful what you flash until you know for certain which bootloader you are using.

Galaxy S3 ATT Baseband IMEI Unknown
I have a samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T (I747). AT&T pushed Kitkat 4.4.2 update last night and after installing my phone was stuck at AT&T logo. AT&T says warranty is over, so they can't do anything.
I flashed JB official stock ROM and then multiple other ROMs but my Baseband and IMEI shows 'unknown'.
WIfi connection is working fine, but no network connection. Desperately need help...

Install terminal emulator from play store and enter this:
getprop ro.bootloader
Post here what firmware build it returns. Also which Rom exactly that you are currently running.

Firmware: I747UCUFNE4
It's currently running Android 4.3, Build: JSS15J.I747UCUEMJB

Try flashing one of the KK touchwiz roms. Might be that running the 4.3 rom is giving issues with the NE4 modem. If that doesn't work you may just need to reflash the modem. (You didn't flash the 4.3 modem did you?)

I think i flashed CWM_I747CUEMJB modem. is it good or bad?
once i flash KK Touchwiz ROM, do i need to flash modem also? if yes, which one?

Actually, since you are already on NE4 firmware, but you said you may have flashed the 4.3 modem, that would most likely be the cause of your issue. Try just flashing the NE4 modem and hopefully thatll take care of it for you. I just uploaded it, see below:
NOTE TO ALL!!!!!!
WARNING!!!
WARNING!!!
WARNING!!!
DO NOT FLASH THIS MODEM UNLESS YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE UCUFNE4 FIRMWARE!!!!! THIS WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE IF FLASHED ON 4.3 FIRMWARE!!!!!!!
THIS IS ONLY SAFE TO FLASH IF YOU ARE ON 4.4.2, NE4, I747 FIRMWARE AND BOOTLOADER!!!
ATT_GalaxyS3_UCUFNE4_Modem

maybe a stupid question, but because of your warning just want to confirm:
the terminal command returned the type of boot loader which is NE4. do i need to confirm the firmware also, if yes, how? or is it the same?

Checking the bootloader confirms that you are on that same firmware. So if it said you have the NE4 bootloader, you also have that firmware so you are safe to flash.
---------- Post added at 06:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:10 PM ----------
And its never a stupid question when making sure you fully understand something like this prior to flashing! If in doubt.....ask!

Thanks a lot! it worked. my Baseband and IMEI are back and it's connected to AT&T network.
But the moment i flash modem, WiFi stops working. I tried it multiple times, WiFi works after flashing JB ROM and stops working after flashing Modem. When in settings i try to turn the WiFi on, it turns off automatically.
There is also constant security information: "The device has detected an application attempting to perform action that are not permitted. These actions have been blocked". This also happens on wifi-on action.

Open the SuperSU app and it will ask if you want to disable Knox. Tell it yes and those security notifications will stop.
For wifi, if you are running a 4.4.2 rom, you will need ktoonsez' kt747 kernel. If on a 4.3 rom you need the MJ2 kernel.

[Q] Help updating baseband

Is there any method to update the baseband on the AT&T Galaxy S3 (SGH-1747) via clockwork mod. I know this can be done via Odin but the usb connector on my phone is behaving properly and randomly disconnects the phone at times. I am currently on baseband version 1747UCLG1 because I have been running a custom ROM since the 4.0.4 stock build. I need to update because the latest AOSP ROMs are not compatible with my baseband version. The baseband version I need is version I747UCDLK3. Thanks in advance for your time.

It's not your baseband that needs updating it's your bootloader. Completely different things but they share the same name.
You can either revert back to stock and let your phone officially update itself via Kies or search around the CM10.1 development thread for some Odin flashable files that will update just your bootloader and a couple of other behind the scene firmware.

I have read and DL'd the zip from the "[LEAK] AT&T 4.3 UCUEMJ2 (Root & Knox versions)" thread and was wondering if the the rom can be loaded directly from CM recovery. Have you checked to see if you can get OTA update or update via the latest version of Kies? I was able to update from 4.1.1 to 4.3 with 2 different pre-rooted i747s - one officially via OTA and the other by flashing the same zips you refer to via cm recovery so maybe that answers your question. Before taking the one-way trip to 4.3, however, be sure you are done messing with your phone at the older firmware including unlocking, if required, as you may not be able to go back.

I'm not aware there is any Odin flashable file for 4.3 yet. You may follow the steps in the link below for manual update via CM...
http://www.smartphonejam.com/2013/1...fficial-android43-i747ucuemjb-ota-update.html
You didn't say if you tried the OTA update? If you want to remain on stock, this is always the safest bet. If you are currently on official 4.1.1 you should be able to get this via WiFi with a valid AT&T sim card in your phone.
Me personally would avoid the official OTA update unless you're absolutely sure you want to keep it. Once you take the bootloader MJB you cannot flash any stock rom anymore unless you have an I747M then you can only flash the official 4.3.
I am on the MJ2 leak bootloader and have no issues, running S3Rx with the MJB modem phone runs great, if something happens I can simply flash anything I want to with Odin.

Exactly. I have also stayed away from the official 4.3. I have no idea why so many people around here just insist that their phone be on the latest update. Ok, the ones that had some major issues previously I could see, and yes you're going to have your exceptions whose phones will work just fine on 4.3. But all this 4.3 has done is create even more issues, with no flash-able firmware to go back to when something goes wrong. Some say there is no major reason not to update, but I say that there is no major reason to update, as most never give a reason to why they want to update. I just don't get it, other than these updates have become like new toys, just something new to play with.

shortydoggg thanks for your post and you actually hit the nail on the head. I can't think of reason I NEED to update, I just get bored and like to play. My warranty is up so voiding that isn't an issue and my 4.1.1 runs just fine, but by playing I learn so I like to play. 4.3 has a few nice features but if prevents the phone from being re-flashed then the risks most-likely aren't worth the benefits. I am just doing my due diligence, researching and asking questions. I really appreciate all the input and advice I get from forums such as this so I can make an intelligent decision.

If you really want to try and want it to be reversible you can use the 4.3 leaked MJ2 bootloader if you decide you don't like the 4.3 stuff you can simply Odin back to stock. But if you use the MJB bootloader you cannot.

You're on the MJ2 leak bootloader you can use Odin to flash a stock image on the phone if you can get it into download/Odin mode.

If it won't let you into download mode then format the internal SD card which should erase everything for the most part and flash everything fresh.

Thanks. It does get into download mode. Is there an Odin flashable file for the MJ2 and, if so, where can I find this? I'm wary about flashing an older ROM (e.g. 4.1.1) to avoid any further conflicts as I still have the official MJB modem or can this be done safely?
I've tried clearing the system and reflashing but it was the same result or perhaps I wasn't doing this the right way?

I have been told by very reliable sources that you can Odin to an older version safely regardless of modem as long as the bootloader isn't MJB or MK5 so I am pretty confident it is safe. At this point there isn't too much to loose.

Odining to an older ROM is apparently not an option as this is isn't working. Thankfully, the phone is still booting into both download and recovery modes without difficulty so there is hope. I flashed CWM recovery via Odin thinking the problem may perhaps be with TWRP. However, the result was the same and the phone kept booting back into recovery mode rather than to the system. I also tried to see if was the bootloader so I flashed the MJB bootloader as well as reflashed the MJ2 system zip. The flashings were successful so, at least, it's unlikely to be a bootloader conflict but still the system will not boot.
Will greatly appreciate steers from the community on how to get the thing back working. n Thanks

Finally got it back up and running today. Cant be sure what really led to the soft brick but I simply wiped out everything in TWRP mode and then re-flashed the (MJ2) system, modem and kernel zips. This time it worked, I'd tried the same thing before but without the kernel. Now I'm back to the same configuration as before.

[Q] SGH-i747m unknown baseband and imei

All, I have a rooted SGH-i747m, on which I had CM11. I replaced that with SlimBean recently, but lost my LTE. So, this morning I updated the modem to I747MUMUEND3 as is found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898. Now I have no IMEI and baseband. Unfortunately I did NOT backup my EFS.
I have read so many posts and tried various things....but I just don't see any way to restore my IMEI and baseband (and get signal back!).
* I have tried a few of the other modems to no avail.
* I tried a restore from a backup I had of CM11 via CWM, but I'm guessing that doesn't backup the NVRAM settings.
* Attempts to use things like *#7284# yields "mobile network not available".
* the S3 doesn't seem to provide a COM port so I don't see how I could use NV-reader-writer even if I had a NVRAM backup file.....
Please advise.
What bootloader is on your phone? It may just be a case of a mismatch between the modem and bootloader.

Not quite sure.....but I did have CM11 on there and I believe a 4.4 bootloader was installed. I ended up reinstalling stock firmware, then reinstalling slim bean and everything works now.
I'm having a similar issue, no modem and carrier support after restoring to an earlier, stock ROM than was on my phone (sgh-i747) before OTA soft-bricked it.
My bootloader is now NJ1 and I can't find or flash a bootloader_modem package to update my modem, attempt to do so fails with status 7 and baseband version remains blank... while everything else on my phone is MJB = mismatch.
I'd like to know exactly what you did to fix yours, dolhop, but it may not help me as I'm already at an NJ1 bootloader
I don't even know how to check which bootloader I am using. I simply used odin to reflash a stock from from sammobile from download mode. That worked. From there I used odin to flash CWM, then used CWM to flash in slim bean.

Status 7 error can be due to an outdate recovery. Are you running the latest CWM or TWRP?
Since you have an i747, you cannot use any firmware from sammobile.com on your phone.

Thanks for the reply, audit13
My CWM is version 6.0.2.3, not most current (6.0.4.7 is latest?) - I got CWM and Team Epic Custom Recovery v5 bundled on androidcentral when I first rooted my phone
I looked at sammobile.com and only saw 4.1.1 for ATT US and didn't even bother... I got the 4.3 stock recovery I flashed here, which resurrected by phone, but unfortunately it was already at 4.4.x, aaaaand now I've got no baseband (mismatch)

[Q] My AT&T S3 is Bricked, HELP!

I updated to Cyanogenmod 11's latest nightly of 4/26/2015 and my phone started behaving badly.
I kept losing signal and having trouble making calls and in my attempts to resolve the issue by flashing back to a previous nightly it seems I lost my IMEI and with it connectivity.
I found a video on youtube that says to access the service menu to fix it but CyanogenMod doesn't do anything when I enter the codes in the dialer so I was attempting tro go back to stock but having trouble finding a good stock rom I can use and the 2 I"ve tried both fail in odin. Then I read something about needed a pit file but flashing that fails to.
So right now I went back stop recovery but still on Cyanogenmod but the phone doesn't do anything when it boots...just no connection.
Someone told me the pros in this forum could help so here I am, help me Cell Phone Gods!!!:crying:
Got this phone info app that says bootloader is I747UCUEMJB
Update 5/5/2015 I'm on latest bootloader and running stock rom but have no data and both calling and text work randomly. 4G symbol comes on once in a while but most of the service I do get when it works is on edge network.
Sounds like your modem may be messed up.
Load a terminal app and use the app to verify the bootloader on your phone.

What's that tell you?

Odin is failing with the stock ROM from sammobile because the phone has at least a 4.3 bootloader on your phone. Do not flash anything from sammobile because attempting to do so could brick your phone.
Since you're back on cwm with an mjb bootloader, try flashing the mjb modem via cwm.

I tried flashing the modem before...I'll do it again...is that going to get me my IMEI number back or allow me to flash stock rom to recover my IMEI?

I did flash the modem you linked and that improved things a bit...I'm back to the original problem, I was having where my phone was having trouble staying on the network. I had even lost all my APNs in my attempts to fix. Now my APNs are back. Still showing unkown IMEI and phone isn't getting on the cell phone network.
So the baseband is now mjb?
Try flashing the latest release of CM10.2. It's possible you need to update the modem and bootloader together in order to support the newest release of CM11. I don't have an s3 so i can't confirm my theory.
You may have to try nvwriter to inject the imei as a last resort: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804117

Yes baseband is MJB.
I'll install 10.2 real quick. In the past that didn't help but who knows this time.
OK. Installed 10.2.1 and still have null imei. Connects to cell networks unreliably but no data and texting.

Did you confirm that your modem and bootloader match? Did you try nvwriter to inject the imei?
I believe modem and bootloader match. Haven't tried nvwriter...can't access service mode on cyanogen apparently.
What do I do now?

The NV Writer method, I get stuck at this point in the instructions
"*If you are running a aosp rom (cm9,cm10,aokp etc) you can use the diag method described HERE"
The link is dead so I've no idea what I'm supposed to do.
Since your imei is null, I'm not sure what else to suggest except to re-flash the existing bootloader and modem or flash a newer bootloader and modem.

There is a newer bootloader and modem?
I sure wish I had an easier time with finding out this info plus the files.

OK, about to try to update to ne4 bootloader and modem. wish me luck!
Updated to NE4 firmware but modem file failed due to being on NE4 firmware(wth!)...obtained a different file that installed ok.
Result...still having null IMEI and no LTE...inconsistent connection issues.
I wonder if I was on NJ1 before I started messing around....

That ROM appears to have a pretty old base and uses a stock kernel, and you're phone is on relatively recent kitkat bootloader and modem. You might be able to get everything working by flashing a custom kernel.

This one is the most up to date. It's Perseus' unofficial version.
Make a backup of boot using your recovery before you flash the kernel. It will be very fast; probably a 10 - 20 MB backup. Then flash the new kernel. That way if you bootloop or it doesn't work out for some reason, you can boot back into recovery and restore that backup of boot to get back to your original kernel.
If that doesn't work, you can try some of the other touchwiz kernels, or just update to a more current ROM.

Before you mess with kernels, have you made sure you're on the right APN for T-Mo? Just thought I'd ask since that ROM supports a wide range of carriers.

You should be able to get back into recovery and restore the backup you made of boot to restore your original kernel, or just flash the ROM zip over again. Either way will get your ROM working again.
I suspect that old 4.1.2 jellybean ROM you're trying to run just doesn't have right ril libs/binaries to work right with the kitkat-gen modem on your phone. Did it let you edit APN's and show your IMEI in the ROM? Either of those not working is usually a sign the ROM just doesn't know how to work with the modem on the phone.
You'll probably have better luck if you switch to a newer touchwiz ROM based on the NE4 ROM that matches the firmware on your phone or an AOSP ROM.
will a rom like this one work ?

You are on a 4.4 bootloader and modem. That ROM says you need a 4.4 bootloader and modem in big red letters right in the OP. I think it should work with the firmware on your phone. :good:
---------- Post added at 03:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:02 PM ----------
Whatever you do, do not try to downgrade your bootloader and modem to work with older ROMs. Not sure if you've read this about this phone yet or not, so I'll put it out there. The 4.3 and 4.4 bootloaders and modems (MJB, NE4, NJ1, & NJ2) always need to be matched. Some people have reported hard bricks trying to flash a modem that doesn't match their bootloader, and those 4.3 and 4.4 bootloaders cannot be downgraded. The result of attempting to downgrade those bootloaders is always a hard brick.
