[Q] S Pen features when rooted - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi guys,
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered before. Search brought up no answers for me.
l have a note 10.1 2014 WIFI only. l haven't rooted it yet though I am familiar with rooting from other devices.
Now, I absolutely hate touchwizz and would love to flash a stock android rom onto my tablet, however l am worried that removing touchwizz will disable any s pen features.
Could somebody please confirm if I will be able to use s pen with a custom rom or not? I've looked through a fair few threads and cannot find an answer.
thanks in advance.

What model of note do you have and what custom rom you want to flash??

Its the wifi only version (exynos chip?) anyhow i've rooted and installed twrp recovery now and backed up.
as for the rom, I'm looking for a complete stock android experience with S Pen features, looking through the rom section here I think I'll be going down the route of a cm11 based rom

Spen is not working with cm11. If you want spen, best bet is stick to TW rom.

I'm running Hyperdrive Rom with Nova launcher and all functionality with the spen is working fine. You might not like touchwiz on the stock Rom but on this Rom it flies.

This clarified lets answer the question; because this gimmicks\features are on TouchWiz and not on the SPen, if you take Touch-wiz out of the equation you will lose those functions but not necessarily the precise pen and the side button detection(which rely on the drivers been implemented correctly on the ROM and not on touchwiz itself).
Rooting the device doesn't affect which system you are running, only what privilege you have in it; so, Still TouchWiz=Gimmicks exist.
Now, if there are things you don't like about TouchWiz there are many ROMs based on it that try to fix many problems inherent to the system and thus you would still have TouchWiz features. On the other hand, if you want to install something like CyanogenMod, AOPK or OmniRom, you will trade Touchwiz gimmicks for those implemented on the ROM you chose(Different Rom, different gimmicks).
I would tell you to investigate which are the gimmicks you want before jumping ROMs. Read the post of every rom you would like to install before doing so.
Personally I couldn't care less for multiwindow or doubletap note gestures if the system stutters randomly and its dumbed down Samsung-style. Even with the great things guys here have achieved with Touchwiz framework(You are really doing great things guys :highfive i still feel like i am in an eternal battle using and controlling it; trying not to launch something i really didn't intended to, or praying for the system to do what i want when I want it to; it is not worth it for me. Touchwiz makes me feel awe but never lets me feel at home and comfortable with the environment. I prefer to install CM and feel the tablet like a nexus device with a nice Wacom pen than a colorfull collage of Touchwiz features. Again, this is my personal opinion.
IMPORTANT NOTE: SPen functioning(READ DISCLAIMER) is almost ready for the new cm ROMs for the wifi version. At this moment there are various cm bases ROMs with the SPen functioning only on landscape mode so if you use the SPen thoroughly for notes, drawings and stuff I recommend waiting a little bit more before making the jump, if you decided to go that way.

Greetings everyone, if possible I'd like to add one more question to this scenario.
I understand from the above that we lose the features from Touchwizz like the floating menu, however what about the general S-Pen functionality, like the 1024 levels of sensitivity?
In particular, I'd like to know if installing CM11 and Sketchbook and use it as efficiently as in a stock environment.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

It depends. If the ROM you want to install has the drivers and are correctly implemented(As in no Bugs), NO, you wont loose core functionality of the pen; Pen detection on the screen with its sensitivity, pen button detection, pen eraser and hover(and any combinations of those 4) are all driver based so they should all work on a ROM that implemented them.
As long as the not-touchwiz-based rom says that the pen works it means that those core functionality are indeed working, and if they dont, it is a bug.
The other aspect would be an outdated driver but i am sure the devs get what we already had on touchwiz and only port it or something, so i don't think we should worry about it.
Other aspect is that some apps like papyrus give you the option to use the pen's button as tool changer, item selector, and other stuff that could not be used on touchwiz because those gestures were taken by the system to open apps or action memo; so in a way, using CM gives you even better experience for 3rd party apps.
TL; DR If SPen drivers are in place you would have the same quality than on touchwiz for SPen Wacom core functionalities.

[Q] Tablet Mode

I rooted my Note 2 (amazingly easy via Note toolkit, thanks), then installed Rom Toolbox and set the DPI to 180. Guess what - NO TABLET MODE! Yes, some apps were with split screen interface, but I saw no navigation bar and no unified notification bar. I am sorely missing the nav bar to the point that I might go back to my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
I guess Samsung have thrown stock Android tablet mode completely out with their Note 2 ROMs.
I can see that Paranoid Android is a ways off, and despite myself I like the S Pen and its associated features, so I was hoping to switch to tablet mode and have the best of both worlds. No luck.
Anyone have any idea how to improve this situation?
It seems like its your first time using any non-nexus phone
There is no tablet mode in stock touchwiz/sense etc if you lower dpi...
They just decrease in size, and apps like keyboard which dont have a "tablet mode" in them FC.
However in Note I there WAS a way to introduce navigation bar for stock rom too...ill post it here so please tell me if it works
Ill be awaiting your feedback :good:

This is the mod...
You just made me remind it
How dare you , just look at my signature! But yes, after Android 4.0, I have been using Galaxy Nexus only - in between I bought a Galaxy Note, flashed stock ICS ROM on it, and enjoyed the tablet benefits. But its horrendous battery life on that ROM made me return to the GNex. I bought Note 2 on launch and am already regretting it because TW is so FUGLY compared to AOSP JB. Thanks for sharing the mod, I will try it and report back

So you are willing to go back to nexus to have the navigation bar that you miss on the Note 2 with 180 dpi? Sure ParanoidAndroid is a solution.. but that means losing S Pen functionality. Then again.. so does moving back to nexus. Might aswell stick to Note 2 legends.

Why not use the Nova Launcher then ? Sure, it's not stock JB, but gets rid of TW and keeps the goodies intact.. (except for the buddy pages, but these are not that significant...)

bro can i know if the mod worked? so that i can add it to my jb mod collection
Stock ROMs does include some of the TW tablet roms components - for example, minimode-res.apk - is responsible for running tablet miniapps on Samm tablets. It has no reason to be on phone ROM but it is included. (Is also included in JB stock rom) Only reason why tablet mode do not work well, is some of the NOTE apks are HDPI+XHDPI, but as soon as you lower your DPI, android will start to recognize apps as LARGE/XLARGE MDPI/HDPI and there is no programmed layout for the apps to be running this mode.
See my signature, there is a hacked ICS SystemUi.apk from Tablet 7,7, which is running fine on Note1 with 213dpi and 160dpi(160dpi breaks call functionality) - mod taken from US Note1, thanks Dagr8, Wanam might be there also included, Qaazi76 for posting.... Thank to them, hopefully there will be also interest to run tablet mode on JB Note2 from devs.
After i just replaced that SystemUi on Note1, you have "microtablet" on 160dpi, with miniapps running from Note 10,1, some apps, Splanner, Email from Tablets are running....but there are some gugs. 213dpi works fine, also calls work just Contacts.apk is broken but still usable as a Phone for daily in TW tablet mode. Anyway, this is NOTE 2 related so...i believe that stock JB rom is capable to run Tablet, just needs some hacking.
So, as soon as some samsung tablet gets JB, hopefully some of the previous hackers (dagr8,etc...) will work on tablet UI for stock TW rom. Or, they may take the previous hacked systemUi as a sample, or somebody might just try to replace the systemUi from the thread just to try.
Hopefully they will work on it as i still keep N1 cause tablet mode. Sorry Samsung, but i see no sense to have big screen with big fonts, icons etc...Your stock UI for NOTEs is wrong!!!
Layout after setting to 213dpi - is very OK for the screen size (I mean Note1)
160dpi - is too small

navigation bar can be enabled by editing build.prop
add this line at the end of build.prop to enable:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
tested with N2 on samsung based rom and worked.

Does anyone know if there's a mod that exists that moves the back key to the far left and recent key to far right? It drives me nuts when I'm typing and I hit the recent key all the time.

To my limited knowledge there is no option for this unless you are rooted or using a custom rom.
There's an option for it in ParanoidAndroid. Just select Phone UI in the Paranoid Settings.

If you mod... Then it isn't stock then is it?
I don't know why people are afraid of custom ROMs. They aren't very far off from a stock rom except stuff like this is already included.
How is you modding your "stock" rom different from someone modding it for you? All ROMs come from the same place when you have a Nexus.
And, yes, custom ROMs allow you to pick and choose any function and whatever icon you want for up to 5... each having the ability to press and hold for an additional 5 functions. I typically include a phone and SMS button on top of the standard 3.
I'm on Xenon BTW. Its the only rom that doesn't suck my battery down in a few hours.

I'm not afraid of flashing different Roms. I prefer the stock with my n7. Most Roms have some bugs in it. I know I've tried a ton. I just wish I could have the back and recent keys spaced out.

Paranoid 2.5 is a stable build.
Sent from my Nexus 7
i haven't seen any mod like this yet.
however, i have to agree with the others.
Flash a custom ROM and enjoy.
the stock ROm is built from AOSP
all custom ROMs are built from AOSP.
yes there may be bugs, but they are most likely in the "tweaks" and "add-ons" the developer made, not with the basic functionality of the ROM.

Why would really need to flash a custom ROM?

Alright, I am not saying that its bad. I have been flashing custom roms for last 3-4 yrs now but on my prevous phone it made sense since it was stuck on Gingerbread. The custom roms gave me 4.2.2 which was hell of a jump. But with note 2 .. all the custom features that are built in stock roms are pretty much gone with flashing custom roms. I see these as going backwards. The spen functionality is completely gone. Yes, you can install some custom apps but they dont have the same features as the stock. Also the sensor features, built in browser, multi window .. all are gone. I have been using paranoid 3.1 for about 2 months now and didnt really see any difference.. other than the tablet mode which is neat but nothing useful per se. pie controls were hard to use, and pretty buggy. Would disappear every now n then. Its fancy but not practical.
So now my question is.. whats are some of the key features that you are missing in stock and you get in custom that you are willing to let go of some useful features in stock? I am definitely missing something here and would like to learn from you..
I am thinking of going back to stock and rooting it ..

Sounds like you meant to ask why flash a AOSP rom not just a "custom rom" because most tw roms still have all the functionality you are saying is lost. To answer your question that is the great thing about Android. ..choice you have the choice to install it or not.

You can tell very easily first off by the screenshots aosp and tw do not look the same. Secondly with aosp you have to flash gapps. Third they are in two seperate forums. That is just a few of the many ways you can tell.

If you see mention of a firmware revision like ma7 or LJC, then you're dealing with a Twiz rom.
However with AOSP roms... The spen does work in its basic capability.

Because Paranoid Android & Tablet Mod are the best thing to happen to this Note! Also because "Whoomp" Rom is based on stock but much better because it gives you options. However I do understand your criticism, whats different this time is "Touch Jizz" doesn't suck as bad as previous versions and its actually becoming a bit of a highlight with its built in features.
However we will always want to flash roms because like beautiful women "there's always someone tired of F_____g them"! Something new even if isn't superior!:good:

[Q] Which ROM is best for my need?

I have a T-Mobile Note 3 Kitkat, rooted (trip KNOX) and I'm looking for a ROM that is:
- Light: No force close or need for release some memory every time I open a memory heavy app (read Tapped Out *blush*)
- No touchwiz, but still retain the S-pen function
- Button remap such that double press the home button or menu button opens the task switcher. The current long press is too long to be used efficiently. <-- the most important thing for me
- Open Google now with swipe from bottom (like the one on Xperia)
- Lock screen like the one on Xpreria too
- No bloatwares
- Simplistic theme
- 4.3 if possible
Anybody with good ROM suggestion? I am new with this stuff, the last time I modded my phone was with WM6.5 so bare with me.

how about the kitchen sink? lol... ok i can answer some but not all
android will release memory as it needs it. sometimes it might help to release some memory depending on what you're doing but its not a constant requirement.
S-pen is part of TouchWiz and its framework so unless you're running a TouchWiz rom you're not going to get it, but there's alternative apps you can use to get the same basic function
Button remaping can be done via xpose on most roms
custom roms dont include bloatware. its the whole point of running a custom rom
most roms are not themed to heavy and most are AOSP. so they're clean and simple.
you said you were on 4.4. did you upgrade your bootloader to the new one included in the 4.4 OTA update? if so then you cannot go back to 4.3 (as i have it understood)
hopefully some of this helps and if im wrong. with any of the above someone please chime in....

If you have updated to KitKat B/L, going back to 4.3 is no good. Sounds like you want an AOSP ROM but good luck finding one that is not buggy and have F/Cs. Or at least problems with texts/crackling sound/no NFC/ the list is long. Not sure why people want AOSP on a note 3, because TW is where your money is at on this device as far as functionality and Spen services. I have tried Hyper drive RLS2 and it has many of the things you are looking for. It is loaded down with mods, but is fast and no FC issues for me. With that said, I personally am a Tweaked Fan..... light, fast, basic where it needs to be and Wally is king **** with his themeing. NOT one single issue with the Beta release..... I'm not surprised, Dwith is a Alien sent to rewrite the ROM book. Give it a go..... my .02
Thank you guys for the advises and suggestions.
I am intrigued by Tweaked, but it appears that it's only for 4.3 devices? I'm not sure if my phone is qualified.

Give it a go..... my .02

I updated to 4.4 via OTA and flashed my recovery (Philz 6.26.6) and downloaded Tweaked. No problems. Make sure you head to the tweaked thread in the General section and there is a link to the IRC. Just log in and D/L.

This is the one I run and I love it.
Forget 4.3. Why do you want to stay there? Tied to an app?

I have a T-Mobile Note 3 Kitkat, rooted (trip KNOX) and I'm looking for a ROM that is:
- Light: No force close or need for release some memory every time I open a memory heavy app (read Tapped Out *blush*)
- No touchwiz, but still retain the S-pen function
- Button remap such that double click the home button opens the task switcher. The current long press is too long to be used efficiently.

Thanks for the link. This looks clean and interesting.
Does this ROM have button remap (double press home or menu button press for app switch)?
Yes I am kind of tied to one app, but it's not really important. It's Puzzle and Dragons... with tweaked stats.

LOL! Fresh and looks professional. Thanks for sharing
Had slimkat for a while and it seemed stable enough. However I would get random reboots at times and some games freezing up on me. Also using s-pen features that are not the OEM ones would often times frustrate me (maybe a user error on my part, but the OEM TW one was easy).
Ended up going with Hyperdrive, I love it and TW isn't laggy at all. Will probably go back to slimkat as soon as they iron out a few more kinks.

To run S-Pen features you got to install Touchwiz Roms, not AOSB, AOSP or others from Android Original Development. Last don't support the stylus and it's possibilities.

S-Pen features need Samsung Touchwiz UI which AOSPs don't have, so: NO WAY

Can't as it is closed Samsung source so it can't be added to open source projects

People will never understand that AOSP Android =/= Samsung TW Android. If you wanted Samsung's S Pen features, you'll have to go for a stock Samsung ROM. AOSP wasn't designed with Samsung's proprietary features in mind.
It's so hard to explain it to people who refuse to understand.

Care to share which apps you used? I used to use AOKP, but then switched to Ditto Note 3 because I wanted the Samsung S Pen suite, HDMI out and a camera that actually works properly.

Just basic stuff ..... Also using gesture from within Rom to activate an App..... Prob nowhere near as good as stuff you get with DN3!
