looking for a mod - Nexus 7 Themes and Apps

Does anyone know if there's a mod that exists that moves the back key to the far left and recent key to far right? It drives me nuts when I'm typing and I hit the recent key all the time.

To my limited knowledge there is no option for this unless you are rooted or using a custom rom.

There's an option for it in ParanoidAndroid. Just select Phone UI in the Paranoid Settings.

Thanks for the tip but I want to stay with stock but have the mod. There always seems to be some bugs with Roms and I don't want to lose any functionality.

If you mod... Then it isn't stock then is it?
I don't know why people are afraid of custom ROMs. They aren't very far off from a stock rom except stuff like this is already included.
How is you modding your "stock" rom different from someone modding it for you? All ROMs come from the same place when you have a Nexus.
And, yes, custom ROMs allow you to pick and choose any function and whatever icon you want for up to 5... each having the ability to press and hold for an additional 5 functions. I typically include a phone and SMS button on top of the standard 3.
I'm on Xenon BTW. Its the only rom that doesn't suck my battery down in a few hours.

I'm not afraid of flashing different Roms. I prefer the stock with my n7. Most Roms have some bugs in it. I know I've tried a ton. I just wish I could have the back and recent keys spaced out.

i haven't seen any mod like this yet.
however, i have to agree with the others.
Flash a custom ROM and enjoy.
the stock ROm is built from AOSP
all custom ROMs are built from AOSP.
yes there may be bugs, but they are most likely in the "tweaks" and "add-ons" the developer made, not with the basic functionality of the ROM.

Glide Now Rooted...Now How About Mods?

So I don't have the phone, but I am interested, hence I have been following the whole rooting process, etc.
Simply put, as the phone has now been rooted, has anybody tried any of the standard Captivate ROMs yet? In particular, anybody try the Captivate ROM for Cyanogenmod on the Captivate Glide?
I gather it won't work seeing as how the underlying hardware is different (Hummingbird on the Captivate VS. Tegra 2 on the Captivate Glide), but who knows...
I'd try but I don't have the phone...yet
I am 99.9% Sure it will not work without any modification. The hardware of the glide is very different from the original captivate.
it will require different kernel at MINIMUM.plus hardware keyboard driver, open/close switch .... other drivers different as well...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the original Captivate never got an official gingerbread release from AT&T.
So my confidence in AT&T is pretty low.
Not really a full mod but someone who knows how to remove all the preloaded crap on it should release a clean rom.

Battery Icon mod.
I have figured out how to change the battery icon in the status bar to show the percentage. the phone is programed to only show in 5% increments, but it't better that guessing!
I have posted a MOD thread here.

Please check it out and provide some feedback.
Thanks.

Get this: NoLED
It's better than any notification light, and since our screens are OLED, only the icon area draws power. I've noticed no significant battery loss.

Remapping Buttons Mod

Ok guys, I am new to any android evelopment but i now have some time on my hand before starting a job developing embedded linux sytems.
So im sure many people are aware of blubbers menu button mod to remove the ics menu buttons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506
basically ,me included, alot of other people want different combinations of the keys.
For example
Back: SP->Back
LP->Kill App
Home:SP->Home
LP->RecApps
RecApps: SP->Search
LP->Menu
with the introduction of aroma installer it allows different configurations.
So with the help of the rest of the community i would like to create a mod which allows users to select different cimbinations of short press and long press functions for each of the three buttons. Also add an option to disable the ics menu button if desired.
Anyone that can five me a help to get staryed on this, it owuld be appreciated.

It's not a feature in ICS, if you don't want a custom ROM you're out of luck.

I also no longer see the value considering the specs of this phone.
I tried to Custom ROMs - AOKP and SLIM ICS. And both ROMs have customizable Navigation buttons. You can set Kill App function on any Nav button (short press or long press).
I use that feature very much.
If I won't be playing a game, I just kill it.
I believe this same battery a little and doesn't require much effort.

i also want that feature, as there are more and more games, that keep running in the background and come up with "sales-notification", "reminder to play" or whatever...to avoid this, i always need to go into apps-settings and kill them after playing, otherwise i get these annoying notifications... :-\
CM9 have that feature too. I do see the point of having it if you use some apps that will wakelock your phone (i.e. Facebook), and the only way to fix it is to kill the app (hold back is quicker then going into recent apps and swipe it away).
Either you use a custom rom, or you don't get it. End of story.

why do so many people think, that swiping apps out of the recent apps list does stop them from running? they are just taken out of the list, but if they are still running, they still do after swiping them away, no matter if shown in the list or not!
try it with one. check if it's running, take it out of recents list and check again...

That's a very useful and helpful answer.
Anything you can get in a custom ROM, you can have in a stock ROM. It just takes someone to implement it. If no one has implemented it yet, assuming there is enough interest, someone will...
I have kanged it before into stock, built from src.

You can only have this option on AOKP / GUMMY and non-official rom porting by aokp.
The best rom i use is gummy, AOKP got some problem with connection...
And gummy has good tweaks that doesn't have aokp, and aokp has very great stuff that gummy doesnt have...
But gummy is very stable on the connection.

That's not exactly what I'm asking. I know it does do that though. I have tried CM9, APEX, AOKP(current), Paranoid Android, Codename Android, and JellyBean.
I just want to know how I can do this(like remove the Softkeys entirely or create a toggle) when I find a Rom that looks interesting that doesn't support the feature.
I dont own the Nexus but on my Galaxy Tab I have Galaxy Task 14 rom and it comes with an called "Hide Bar". It hides the Honeycomb soft keys. You should give this app a try and I think you have to be rooted.

you named more or less all custom ROMs you will need to ask the dev to implement it, i think. don't that there is an app solution or sth like that.
Am I mistaken, or is this a feature that is readily available in certain ROMs? You're talking about getting rid of the Back/Home/Recents, allowing full 720p glory, right? I'm trying to remember.. I want to say it would definitely be a feature on Paranoid Android, where you can hold the power button to enable/disable the soft keys (it was one of the icons at the top). Hopefully this helps.. Paranoid Android is the way to go if you absolutely need some certain kind of crazy/abnormal setup. (I really want to use it more than I do.. until this phone no longer is my primary contact number.)

Custom ROMs or Stock?

Hi, I didn't know if this should be in Questions or Discussions, so apologies ahead of time.
I just got a Pixel 2 XL and recently unlocked the bootloader. I'm thinking about experimenting with some custom ROMs and tweaking some things, however I'm really digging the stock Pie experience. Is there really any super good reasons for installing any of the misc. ROMs out there? Or should I just stick to stock? Just looking for some opinions. Thanks!

Personally speaking, I've tried most of the custom roms, and they're all great in their own way, with fantastic Dev & community support in all of them. Having said that, I like the simplicity, and ease of updating every month with the factory images when they come out. Just a few clicks here and there, and I'm running the latest software and security updates, with my magisk modules, root apps, and themes up and running in about 30 minutes. But again, that's just me

Haha yup I sure do.. the good ol days
Personally, I went on a week kick of using custom ROMs. I love them. They generally perform great and have some useful features, for me, such as:
One-handed mode
Swipe left on nav bar to go back
Status bar customization
Quick and easy themes for dark mode
etc
However, there are just a few trade-offs, which could make it or break it for you.
No squeeze for Assistant. I use this not for assistant but with the Edge Sense Magisk module that lets you customize your squeezes to do literally anything lol.
LED Notification (I have not been able to get this working on any ROM but someone correct me if its just a "me issue".
No ambient display "Now Playing" text. Keep in mind it'll still pop up as a notification and there was one ROM I tried (Nitrogen possibly?) that allowed me to control music on Spotify via the ambient display and i LOVED that!
Those 3 reasons keep me on stock for now. I may switch back into the ROM scene if I could at least get the LED notification working lol. The active edge functionality is also something I use constantly but it's not the end of the world if it's gone.
Anyway, this is what Ive noticed! Hope others can chime in!
Edit: I use light manager on stock. I'm unsure if it works on custom ROMs. I should try it!

Have you tried using Light Manger for your led notifications? Used to work great on 8.1 with custom roms. Although 9.0 may be different.

I use Light Flow for my notification light needs and haven't had any issues.

I use Light Manager on stock! I love it. You @localceleb use it on custom ROMs and it works? I'll admit that I have not tried it on custom ROMs but on stock it works swimmingly well! Haha
The beauty of these phones is you can always go to back to stock by just flashing the ota file in twrp.
So far my favourites are DU13 and Pixel dust.
I enjoyed Havoc AOSP. For now for me nothing beats stock with edge control. I use long squeeze for flashlight which is awesome for overnight piss breaks.
I never use squeeze nor care for the "Now Playing" on the lock screen (actually disabled both on stock).
I have been running stock for about a year with custom kernel, then found Havoc-OS and flashed that about 2 weeks ago. Don't have any complaints and absolutely love the customisation. Probably won't be going back to stock for awhile.
I prefer custom ROMs for minor tweaks such as status bar icon settings, lockscreen stuff and Substratum!
I've bought many themes so I'd rather have a device that has commits to make it work to its max potential (i.e. not having to reboot to enable overlays).
Updating process isn't difficult for custom ROMs either. Developers are usually pretty quick with updates once the Google images release every month. Just need to flash the new ROM zip, TWRP, kernel and root and you're golden!
