4.4.2 bootloader can't be downgraded. If you flash older bootloader, you will run into trouble.
If you want to jump back to 4.3, install Mobile Odin and flash the firmware. It flashes everything except the bootloader.

Mobile Odin works without failure if you follow the procedure correctly.
Stock ROM (tar) and Custom ROM (zip) based on 4.3 bootloader will go into bootloop. There might be a way to get 4.3 custom ROM by flashing img files for 4.3 kernel, modem, etc., without flashing the bootloader. But you will be flirting with danger.
Also, 4.3 custom ROMs lack support these days. The developers have moved to 4.4.2.
It is advisable to stick to 4.3 stock Rom or use 4.4 Custom ROMs.

[Q] Messed with Bootloader, Need Help!

So, I rooted my S3 (was on 4.3 via OTA) and tried to install CM 10.1.3. When I tried to flash it, it gave me errors. I looked it up and found out that it had something to do with my bootloader.
I blindly flashed this firmware, hoping that it would fix the problem. Then, I read in the thread in I'm not suppose to flash this if I already have the 4.3 OTA update and I'm like "Oh crap... "
Sure enough, when I try to turn on my phone, it wouldn't boot. At this point, I know it's hard bricked.
I go ahead and follow directions from this thread and I've successfully got the phone to download mode, but what do I do now?
Is there a stock bootloader I can use through Odin?
You have to flash the 4.3 firmware through Odin if I'm not mistaken.. It's the only one, you can't downgrade it anymore

My phone is already on 4.3, but I'm not suppose to flash the UVDMD5 Firmware while on 4.3, causing the brick. I can boot into the phone, but I need the SD card when I do since it has the 4.3 debrick image I found here.
I read the thread and I'm unsure if there's a fix for this.

Yes I know, you have to flash the 4.3 firmware again to get out of the brick.. Try searching or asking in the unbrick thread, you'll probably get more help there

Alright, I'll try flashing a 4.3 firmware. If I flash this ROM, could I downgrade to something below 4.3 and flash the UVDMD5 firmware/bootloader since the ROM is Knox-free?
EDIT: I tried flashing and it didn't fix the brick. Alright, I think I need to focus on one problem at a time.

That's a big no.. You'll end up back where you started.. But you can just flash a custom recovery and then flash any ROM.. I believe the error you were getting was because the bootloader wasn't recognized by the updater script for the ROM and that's why it was throwing errors.. Once you add it to the script, it should flash fine
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
At this point, I don't really care about trying to install CM. I just want unbrick it and get back to stock 4.3. I tried flashing a stock 4.3, but that doesn't fix the brick.
I think it's because flashing the stock ROM doesn't change the bootloader. Maybe if I could revert the bootloader to stock, maybe it'll unbrick it?
Go to the unbrick thread, there you will find the best help.. Real experts there

Just flash the 4.3 firmware (not a rom) via Odin. That's it.

Thanks Doc, that did the trick!
And thank you for the firmware/ROM clarification!

For a 4.3 ROM, you need to install 4.3 bootloaders. Are there any drawbacks?

I'm considering upgrading to a 4.3 rom from 4.1.2 and I've learned that a stock image of 4.3 must be flashed first (thorugh Odin?) to update the bootloader to 4.3.
Is there any drawback to upgrading? Will I still be able to flash 4.1.2 roms using the 4.3 bootloader? Will I be able to downgrade to the 4.1.2 bootloader (should the need arise)?
Side question: is Odin the only way to update the bootloader? Can it be flashed through TWRP?

You'll have Knox. (Stock) which locks u down cause u can't downgrade and by rooting, you're going for a un-reset-able Knox Warranty Void trigger. Downgrading bootloader is impossible as of now, but flashing ROMs should be possible. (Should, not damn sure)
Side Answer: don't think so. Just flash stock 4.3 through TWRP and u should be good to go.
Smack that thanks button If I helped!

I'm running 4.3 JediMasterX2 with old bootloader and devil kernel and everything seems to be running fine. There was a very informative post made recently they gave a clean and simple explication of pros and cons to bootloader update. I'll try to locate and post a link but long story short, it's in your best interest not to update bootloader if you don't have to.

Please don't do the official update and get yourself locked down like many of us have. I have flashed many 4.3 roms and they worked fine. Got a new phone and did the official update and now I cannot send this device in for warranty because of the KNOX flash counter.

[Q]A few questions about rooting/odin/recovery

Thank you for taking time out of your day to help.
I just got an s4 on tmobile and I have some questions. I tried rooting it and ran into an error. I found an answer online, which was to flash a stock 4.3 rom via odin, then try the CFT autoroot. So it's all good and I'm rooted. I just have some questions:
1. Why was I able to flash a rom via odin, when all the rom installation guides I see require a CWM or some other recovery?
2. When I try to boot up into recovery I think it's the stock recovery and not a custom recovery that allows me to install a zip. When I used CFT auto root, I saw it booted into a custom recovery to root, did it just get deleted after that?
3. How will my root work with the 4.4 ota? When I check for software updates it says my phone has been modified so they aren't available. So how can I get the ota? Am i better off flashing a custom 4.4 rom? I want closest to stock as possible, so if you have any recommendations for stock 4.4 roms that would be great. Or can I flash the 4.4 stock rom as I did with odin?
4. How does tethering work with root? If I have unlimited data with 2.5gb tethering data, now that I'm rooted, can tmobile tell I'm tethering if I'm using a root tethering app?
Again thank you very much for your help.
1. You did not flash a ROM with Odin, it was firmware.. Very different
2. Yes, I believe that's what cf-auto root does
3. Yes you can flash a 4.4 firmware like you did with 4.3 as long as its for your device, or flash a custom recovery and then a 4.4 ROM
4. Not too familiar with this, but it might be possible to get around it

Awesome thank you. If I flash the official 4.4 firmware for my device, will I keep my root?

No if it is an untouched fully stock rom/firmware but there will be rooted versions of the stock firmware/rom.
Stay with root, you will be better off, custom roms are usually available within a day after ota updates

Help with gs3 root

Hey guys. This may have been asked already but i am coming from verizons gs4. and over there you can oly get custom recovery if youre on mdk bootloader.
I just bought this phone for my brother and it came with 4.12 (MG2)
I see everywhere that people were able to get 4.3. i tried updating through phone and through kies and says its up to date. so now my question i guess is what bootloader do i need to be on or what 4.x.x do i need to be on in order to root and get custom recovery to flash custom roms?
any help will be greatly appreciated.
I recommend not updating to stock 4.3 ROM as this will install Knox and you will have a non-downgradeable bootloader. You can use Odin to flash Philz Touch which is based on CWM. From there, you can flash custom ROMs.
Some ROMs require a 4.3 bootloader, but these would tend to be based on the stock Samsung ROM. I am running the latest Validus 4.4.2 on a stock Bell 4.1.2 bootloader without a problem.

Oh ok. Well I just succesfully rotted and installed latest touch cwm.
so if I stay on 4.1.2 I can basically flash any kitkat roms? Because I dont want to install a tw rom.
So another question what are some good 4.4 kk roms? As in stable for daily use that I could flash
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Most kitkat ROMs will work with a 4.1.2 bootloader based on my experience.
I like the Ground Zero ROMs and use them on the s3, Moto Atrix HD, and Nexus 4.

[Q] i'm selling 7105 i'd like to get back stock rom?

Hello guys,
i'm selling my note 7105 cause i bought OPPO find 7..
here i've a 4.4.2 slimkat rom and i'd like to give it to a friend but with stock rom ( he doesn't play with roms..)
now.. i've read here and there and it's not possible to go back on 4.3 ? is there anyt STABLE (real stable ) custom rom then?
i've read that 4.4.2 official is going to be out soon so this might " save " me !
is there any way to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3?
is this Ditto DN3 v4 RC2 worth to try ?
should i install some earlier bootlader if i decide to get back on stock rom?
thanks for all info
What bootloader do you have? If you went from 4.1.2 to slimkat then you should be able to flash any stock rom. The problem is going back to 4.1.2 with the 4.3 bootloader. If you install dn3 you will either have to flash stock 4.3 first or use agni/devil kernel to get wifi.

lol.. don't laugh...
i thought that being on 4.4.2 implies i've that bootloader
i tried to find the version on recovery and system info but,...??
where can i find the info abou tmy booloader? i know it sounds noob ... have patience
thanks
Something like this should tell you
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.info
AFAIK you can't flash bootloader through recovery so if you were on 4.1.2 when you flashed slimkat you will still be on that bootloader. You should be able to flash any stock through odin if you are on 4.1.2 but if you were on
4.3 you might not be able to flash 4.1.2. If you do flash 4.3 with odin you will get knox

I'm pretty sure dmc3 is 4.1.2 so you should be able to flash anything. I'd flash the stock 4.1.2 for your country with odin run triangle away then unroot and everything will be stock
