So, I rooted my S3 (was on 4.3 via OTA) and tried to install CM 10.1.3. When I tried to flash it, it gave me errors. I looked it up and found out that it had something to do with my bootloader.
I blindly flashed this firmware, hoping that it would fix the problem. Then, I read in the thread in I'm not suppose to flash this if I already have the 4.3 OTA update and I'm like "Oh crap... "
Sure enough, when I try to turn on my phone, it wouldn't boot. At this point, I know it's hard bricked.
I go ahead and follow directions from this thread and I've successfully got the phone to download mode, but what do I do now?
Is there a stock bootloader I can use through Odin?
You have to flash the 4.3 firmware through Odin if I'm not mistaken.. It's the only one, you can't downgrade it anymore

My phone is already on 4.3, but I'm not suppose to flash the UVDMD5 Firmware while on 4.3, causing the brick. I can boot into the phone, but I need the SD card when I do since it has the 4.3 debrick image I found here.
I read the thread and I'm unsure if there's a fix for this.

Yes I know, you have to flash the 4.3 firmware again to get out of the brick.. Try searching or asking in the unbrick thread, you'll probably get more help there

Alright, I'll try flashing a 4.3 firmware. If I flash this ROM, could I downgrade to something below 4.3 and flash the UVDMD5 firmware/bootloader since the ROM is Knox-free?
EDIT: I tried flashing and it didn't fix the brick. Alright, I think I need to focus on one problem at a time.

That's a big no.. You'll end up back where you started.. But you can just flash a custom recovery and then flash any ROM.. I believe the error you were getting was because the bootloader wasn't recognized by the updater script for the ROM and that's why it was throwing errors.. Once you add it to the script, it should flash fine
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
At this point, I don't really care about trying to install CM. I just want unbrick it and get back to stock 4.3. I tried flashing a stock 4.3, but that doesn't fix the brick.
I think it's because flashing the stock ROM doesn't change the bootloader. Maybe if I could revert the bootloader to stock, maybe it'll unbrick it?
Go to the unbrick thread, there you will find the best help.. Real experts there

Just flash the 4.3 firmware (not a rom) via Odin. That's it.

Thanks Doc, that did the trick!
And thank you for the firmware/ROM clarification!

Hey guys
so I accidentally installed a firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282603&highlight=unbrick) and my phone got bricked (T999). I managed to get it to boot using the debrick solution with the sdcard, but I have no idea how to make it boot without the sdcard. (used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439367).
I've tried going to the odin thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4081205) and have downloaded the T999 MD5 (both root66 and stock) files yet everytime I try to flash, odin keeps failing right after NAND WRITE.
The funny thing is, I have cyanogen installed and it works fine. it's just the boot process that's not working.
I supposed as a last resort I can leave the sd card in, but anybody know a solution?
Thanks!
Are you running CM 10.2? If you were on a 4.3 ROM, you have to find the MJC firmware.

Yea its currently on Cm 10.2. I need a separate firmware? I can't just install a stock ROM?

That thread specifically says to NOT flash that firmware if you're running the latest 4.3 firmware, and since you're running CM 10.2, I assume you're on firmware 4.3.
So that's why you need to flash the stock 4.3 firmware to restore your bootloader back the way it was.

I first flashed that firmware because 10.2 wouldn't flash properly.
If I'm already running 4.3 then why do I need to flash stock 4.3.
Right now my biggest problem is that odin simply won't flash. It keeps failing after NAND WRITE.

Because you want to boot your phone without the SD card. According to the thread, "Currently there is NO way to downgrade from MJC firmware without a brick due to the Knox security stuff added to that firmware release."
When you flash the MD5 firmware in that thread, you attempt to downgrade, causing the brick.

If I flash 4.3 stock, then it's not downgrading. It's just maintaining that bootloader. Then how come the odin flash fails?
Right now I'm trying t oget my phone to boot w/o a sd card. It doesn't matter what version I have to flash. It's just that every version seems to be failing.
So you are saying that you Odin 4.3 mjc firmware and it keeps failing?

nope. on the debrick thread, it says after being able to boot with the sd card, go to the odin thread.
the odin thread has a bunch of stock roms and instructions on how to install them.
i downloaded the stock roms and tried flashing all of them (in hopes atleast one of them would work) but they all fail
Just flash 4.3 firmware. Not a rom.

Sorry, I wasn't very specific. Because you're on MJC, there's no way to downgrade. That's why none of those ROMs work.
You need to flash the 4.3 MJC firmware via Odin because when you flashed that MD5 firmware, it messed with the MJC bootloader, and the MJC firmware won't let you downgrade to a lower firmware.
So flashing the 4.3 MJC firmware will restore the MJC bootloader, unbricking your phone.

For anyone who's facing this problem, I just used samsung Kies and it fixed the problem in less than 10 minutes. It boots fine w/o the sd card now.
My firmware was preserved, so I had no problems flashing newer roms.
It did, however, unroot my device, so just be prepared to redo that process.
I tired to root my galaxy s3 but ended up bricking it for a while and all i got was the Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. Try these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233, stock at&t rooted without Knox (Believe me man, better without knox). But they are only leaks of the official firmware. Based on the OP, the phone is currently running Verizon's 4.1 which leads me to believe the bootloader has not been updated beyond 4.1.2 since recovery mode is accessible; therefore, I think flashing 4.11 or 4.1.2 stock roms would be fine.
As always, it's best to check the installed bootloader before proceeding with any more flashes.
I used the stock firmware from here to downgrade my Bell s3 from stock 4.1.2 to stock 4.1.1.

i wouldnt flash the bootloader just to to be safe though. id flash the recovery from the root forum and then install a cm or aosp ROM.
or open the tar and make sure there are not bootloader related files i forgot all of them but one is mbl. something and 1,2,3 theres a post on here how to check i just dont know where
I have Samsung Galaxy S III T999 that I had downgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 and I was able to unlock it through out by dialing and going to menu.
Every thing went ok and I was able to do it without any problem.
Few weeks after I restored my phone and some how by mistake I upgraded to 4.3
and now I can't downgraded my phone it keep giving me fail on odin.
I see so many how to downgrade and I tried it twice and keep failing without bricking my phone I was able to get back to my phone.
Is there any thing that allow me to downgrade or I have to wait for mods to come up with answers.
Thank you very much
You're lucky you didn't brick your device.. If you want to downgrade the only way to do it right now is to flash a custom recovery in Odin like twrp or cwm, and then flash a 4.1.x ROM

You can go back and flash any 4.1.X ROM, just don't Odin any official 4.1.X firmware coz that will downgrade your bootloader and result in a a most probable brick.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong....
I was wondering if I may run into any problems by doing this.
I know that on an AT&T phone (i747), if you do that, you may lose your modem and needs to be reflashed (you get a null IMEI)
Is it the same on a SGH-T999? I was planning to flash this ROM:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=26636
Thanks
There is no 4.4.2 to downgrade from for the T999.
If you just have a 4.4.2 Rom, you don't need to do anything.
The firmware you linked is the latest available so you can flash it regardless of what you have now.
There is no 4.4.2 update for the T999 so yes you can flash it but it is not a ROM, it is firmware, please do not confuse these two they are very different!
Yeah... I'm afraid I am confused. What I did was to flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2690947
Isn't that a ROM?
However I would like to go back to 4.3, so I was just wondering if I could have any problems.
Sorry for the noob questions. I think it was clear to me, but I'm afraid it's not...
Thanks
Yes that is a rom, what you linked to in the first post is firmware which contains more than just the system and that is where you run into problems when downgrading

Yes, flash the link you provided in the first post or flash a 4.3 rom.. Understand this, flashing a rom will not determine if you can downgrade or not, flashing firmware will. Since there is no 4.4 firmware for the T999 you can still flash the 4.3 firmware. If there was a 4.4 firmware and you took the OTA or updated via Odin then the only thing you could do is flash a 4.3 rom, firmware will not be an option
Edit: oh and btw I accidently pressed the thanks button so you got a free one

4.4.2 bootloader can't be downgraded. If you flash older bootloader, you will run into trouble.
If you want to jump back to 4.3, install Mobile Odin and flash the firmware. It flashes everything except the bootloader.

Mobile Odin works without failure if you follow the procedure correctly.
Stock ROM (tar) and Custom ROM (zip) based on 4.3 bootloader will go into bootloop. There might be a way to get 4.3 custom ROM by flashing img files for 4.3 kernel, modem, etc., without flashing the bootloader. But you will be flirting with danger.
Also, 4.3 custom ROMs lack support these days. The developers have moved to 4.4.2.
It is advisable to stick to 4.3 stock Rom or use 4.4 Custom ROMs.
