Anyone else having Bluetooth issues? Specifically:
Brief dropouts and clicks. They may not be very noticeable to casual listeners or those without decent headphones, but they're jarringly obvious to me as a semi-audiophile.
Sudden, LOUD static noises that are so short and so loud that it sounds like a gunshot. I was chilling at work today and heard this happen, and nearly fell out of my chair. I threw my headphones across my desk in panic.
I am really frustrated because the amount of troubleshooting I've done on this suggests that the issue is endemic to Android itself, and they simply refuse to fix it.
I first noticed the problem with Android 4.4.0 on the Moto Droid Maxx. The issue did not exist on that phone running Jelly Bean. Then, when I upgraded to the Galaxy S5, first on 4.4.2 and then 4.4.4, the issue persisted. Now it's still here bothering me to no end on the Note 4. That's THREE separate devices spanning three generations (or two, if you count the S5 and the Note 4 as the same generation), and two manufacturers, all having the same problems!
Other important/relevant observations:
1. This DOES NOT occur when using the exact same bluetooth headsets with other computing devices. I have an old Dell Latitude laptop and a first-gen Microsoft Surface Pro, both of which NEVER produce clicks, pops, or loud noises on Bluetooth, regardless of distance. I usually keep my phone less than 3 feet from my headphones while listening to music.
2. This IS NOT isolated to a single bluetooth device. I have the Meelectronics Air-Fi Matrix2 (Bluetooth 4.0), the original Meelectronics Air-Fi Matrix (Bluetooth 3.0), and my car's Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
3. This IS NOT related to voice calls. It only occurs when the "Media" subsystem of Android is in use, so, apps besides the Phone playing sound.
So, we can create a nice pretty table as follows (and yes, I have tried every possible combination of these):
Code:
BT Device Phone/Computer BT Protocol Problems?
Meelec Matrix2 Surface Pro 4.0 None
Meelec Matrix Surface Pro 3.0 None

Has anyone used, for more than a couple of hours, a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones or headset (not the little thing you stick in your ear, but actual headphones for music) with an app like Spotify, Google Play Music, or a local media player, and NOT experienced this problem, with the Note 4? If so, please let me know what Bluetooth device you have -- be as specific as possible. I'm fed up with this problem being so widespread and yet ignored by the manufacturers and Google. Maybe there are other Bluetooth client chipsets out there other than the ones I'm using that'll work better.
Thanks!
I constantly hear that odd snap/pop randomly when using Bluetooth. It isn't a wifi or VZW connection issue and happens off my Bose or car Bluetooth. It never happens using my headset plugged in. I've tolerated it because it's better than the skipping/stuttering issue I had using 4.4.2. Hoping L fixes it. Google knows about the issue.
OK, I just ordered an Avantree Saturn Pro, which I can plug into the 3.5mm of the Note 4 and transmit to my Meelectronics bluetooth headset. I don't move my phone around on my desk much during the day, so it's not that big of a deal to plug and unplug it. It's much more convenient than buying a brand new pair of headphones that transmit over a non-BT protocol and connect by 3.5mm, like the Steelseries H Wireless. I'll finally be able to listen to music again at work.
I'm cynical so I bet Lollipop won't hit the Verizon Note 4 until 2015, possibly even March or April. I'll get plenty of use out of my Saturn Pro in the mean time. Thanks!
Mine used to do that, I fixed it by adjusting the cpu min clock rate. It drains the battery faster but it got rid of it. It worked for me on both note 3 and 4.

I too have the periodic random skipping issue with Bluetooth on the Note 4, which is especially annoying with music and audiobooks in my car. Weird thing is, this is the first time I've ever had this issue with an Android phone, and I've been through 10+ different Android phones over the past several years.
No issues here with Bluetooth and music streaming.

That's great, but can you please provide details on what hardware you have? Bluetooth hardware, that is.
Same issue here and it is so damn annoying.. one of the key reasons I upgraded was this issue which I had all the time in the Droid RAZR Maxx HD. And same stupid problem with the note 4. I use LG tone, Motorola S305, and my car Bluetooth is Kenwood built into my stereo system. I have the same issues on all three devices.
I hope you make some headway. It's little things like this that give android such a bad name... heck it makes me, a diehard android guy, even consider moving to icrap cause I just want smooth running music!!

I had some bluetooth ( dropped connections then reconnecting) issues with my Jawbone Icon. Dropped connection
I fixed the problem (so far) by resetting then repairing my Jawbone
I have a Samsung 3000 Bluetooth receiver that I can plug any headphones into. I've used Pandora, Play Music, and gone mad music player for long durations and haven't experienced any issues. It's Apt-X too if that matters.
Edit: I've also paired it with the stock radio on a Honda Pilot with no issues.
|> transmitted from deep inside a Verizon Note 4
My Bluetooth constantly disconnects then reconnects all my BT devices. All devices have worked with my last 4 Android phones. I think it's a hardware issue.
Issue GONE
The latest update FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!
Completely!!!!!
Build KTU84P.N910VVRU1ANJ5 released this week
The release notes claim to fix a WiFi issue (maybe WiFi was somehow interfering with Bluetooth operation???) but now my Bluetooth is PERFECT. Not a single dropout in two days. Normally I would get several dropouts per hour. No more loud noises either!
YAY they fixed it!
....aaaand nevermind. The symptoms came back as soon as I rebooted my phone. Rebooting my phone again and again doesn't re-fix the problem; it just seems that the first reboot after an OTA has it working well, but as soon as you reboot again, you lose the magic pixie dust that caused it to work before.
Ugh. False alarm. Still busted. Still tethered to the 3.5mm cable. :x

Or it doesn't really matter to have 3.0 when you are choosing a bluetooth stereo headset?
doesnt matter as a headset wouldnt gain much with 3.0 features.

It's a shame there shouldn't be any difference with 3.0 headsets as with most 2.0 or 2.1 EDR devices I tested & used I've found that A2DP audio suffers from the variable pitch issue (playback speed slightly decreases or increases as the device processor may be busy with another process) which makes listening to music sometimes not nice. In most cases I use A2DP for radio podcasts while I return to wire headset for music playback.
I know I'm not alone in this case so as a non tech I was hoping BT 3.0 would maybe address that pitch issue but I haven't found any 3.0 headset yet to test that either...
I don't think you will ever see a bluetooth 3.0 headset. I think 3.0 is just for faster file transfer between devices. We will have to wait til 4.0 comes out for better headsets. Just what I got from reading wikipedia article on bluetooth.
New motorola s10 headset coming out the 24th, ill probably give them a try

bt3.0 will be amazing for headsets. It includes the ability to boost to full power instantly so you don't loose the connection when something interferes with the connection (like when you slip your phone in your pocket or when it is in the opposite side of your body from the antenna in the headset). However, I am not sure if this needs to be on both sides or if its sufficient to have it in the phone alone... I think it may have to be in both (kind of hope not).

I have 2 of 2.1 bluetooth, they've been working fine with my HTC-Inspire. When I upgraded my phone to HTC-Vivid which has Bluetooth 3.0, those 2 headsets with 2.1 no longer working as it was with Inspire ( cracking sounds, and volume is low). So purchased over ebay a $30 plantronics m20 which build in a Bluetooth 3.0 and it works flawlessly. It likes instantly connects to my HTC-vivid Bluetooth. A lot of times, I don't need to turn on the M20, if someone calls me, then I switch on and it's connected in a matter of a second and audio automatic switches to headset. FYI, m20 doesn't have A2DP

Nokia Essence
You may have a hard time looking for BT 3.0 stereo headsets because -unless I'm mistaken as fosselman pointed out in this thread- there were no audio enhancements from BT 2.1 to 3.0 specifications. Instead, what you could may look for and try is CSR's "apt-x" proprietary HD "lossless" audio codec used by Monster, HTC, Samsung, Nokia and even Apple in their iphone 4s or the new ipad, allowing for higher bitrate to match CD-like quality.
I've had the variable pitch issue even on good A2DP models in the past and I've tested many (Sony Ericsson's HBH series, Nokia BH series such as BH-214 or BH-903 and others such as itech). Appart from the pitch issue I also found that speech clarity on voice calls wasn't very good on GSM calls with the headset on, and even not-usable over VoIP.
I am now testing Nokia Essence (also called BH-610) which is still a bluetooth 2.1 model but comes with the apt-x and highbitpool SBC codec support. I'm using it with a Bluetooth 3.0 Nokia 700 on symbian Belle, and although I've had it for only a few hours I can already report I don't have the variable pitch issue with music and sound is better than the previous models I tested. The downside is that it's hard to get this model at the moment (not sure why since it was announced back in Summer 2011 already) and consequently pretty expensive as it also comes with noise reduction and NFC pairing.
Has anyone here tested Sennheiser's PX-210 or Jaybird's Sportsband/Freeband with compatible apt-x phones or music player bluetooth adapters ?
Friends, I own a sennheiser mm550 a wireless headphone,
however I found that my note could not detect the headphone.
I need advice, do i need to install a certain bluetooth driver to make it compatible with a Galaxy note, or is it because of yamaha codec? are there any workaround?
product details :
Technology Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR / supported profiles: A2DP + AVRCP + HSP + HFP
I certainly hope that I could use it on the note because it pairs fine with all of my ios devices
thanks much!
Works here (TM)
I own both the GNote, and the MM550, and both are working just fine.
Nothing installed, using the 2.3.6 Samsung rom.
Have you already paired it with another device?
If so, check your manual on how to un-pair it with the previous device.
Seems stupid, but i had the same ''problem'' with a nokia headset..
Just saying.
Yes, i've paired it with several other BT devices (Car, other headphones, etc)
i had problems with a discovery 975 and a nokia stereo bh504 but i solved it installing winamp, i think its the stock music player that have issues with some bt earphones.
That is something completly different
It just so happens, I’m not using the stock player at all
I'm using Google Music, RadioParadise streamer, and SiriusXM streamer.
I've also tried to use DeadBeef, but it appears it crashes when I’m trying to use it with BT. I'm assuming that the problem is with the player, and not the other way around.

OMG, thanks, it worked!
thanks for everyone who replied, much appreciated, now i can get the best sound out of my note!
Glad you solved your BT issue. I had a similar problem and was saddened mine would not work at all. I struggled with the idea of returning a possibly defective Note.
After some google searching for the headset connectivity issues, rather than Note connectivity issues, I found the solution. You may have found a similar solution, but I wanted to post mine here for any future Note user who might be fretting how to solve their BT connection issue.
The problem was indeed a pairing issue. Since my BT headset, a Plantronics Backbeat 9XXX, was already paired to my Vibrant, the Note did not even detect the headset. I tried rebooting the Note, toggling BT on/off, rebooting the headset.
I managed to pair the Vibrant to the Note, and successfully transferred several files, so was relieved to discover the Note was not the culprit.
Solution? For my headset, all I had to do was power the headset off, then back on again, but hold the power button while powering up for an additional 5 seconds or so. This cleared out its memory and unpaired it from the Vibrant. The Note picked it up instantly and everything works optimally now.
The Note's audio quality is pretty good for these almost audiophile ears. The only glitch I do notice, however, is an annoying on/off whoosh or clicking noise... Overall, I'm fairly satisfied with the Note's audio performance.

I also don't like the sound quality at all.
I come from an Iphone and a Nokia N-900. The note has by far the worst sound of them all. At least when it comes to music. With Podcasts (of course) the note (as any device) will cope just fine.
An Excellent device in all, if it weren't for the sound quality.

Note + PowerAmp + MM550 will get you a very nice sound, try it.

But when i hold it in my hand it rarely skips. it's sad because i thought bluetooth had a range of like 30 feet or so. Hopefully it's just a bug and will get fixed with an update.

I bought a Moto S10-HD headset last week. It's been perfect. Over the past few days, I've used it about 5 hours a day, mainly traveling since my car isn't set up for plugging a phone into the stereo. I haven't had any skips. I use it at the gym when I do cardio, and it's fine in my pocket, in the cupholder of the Arc, where ever I stick it.
VZW Version, Android 4.0.4
Now, If I go walking off into another room, like 30+ feet away, it will skip in and out due to distance/signal strength. I know it's the newer model, maybe the bluetooth connection is stronger than the S9-HD? On the phone side of things, I'm not sure what the differences in bluetooth strength is between different modem packages, but maybe a radio update will help. My BT strength is REALLY off the chart, better than any Android device I've ever used. I haven't had BT this good since an old Sony Ericson and an unknown BT headset that probably scrambled my brains. I still have that phone and I SWEAR that it's BT has a much further range than the 30 foot rule. Likewise, on my SGS it's like 5 feet was the max...and I couldn't dream of it going in my pocket. Even my cheap little Plantronics headset seems to have a little more range.
I was able to resolve my BT skipping issues by following this post:

Hello guys,
I am planning to use this http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-BlackBerry-Smartphones/dp/B004EHZUYG
Now the bluetooth receiver will connect directly to my aux port in my car.
The Note 2 has an awesome sound chip which I really like as opposed to my old Dell Streak 5, but once it is paired with the bluetooth receiver, will it be bypassing the audio hardware, and thus the audio quality will be reduced as opposed to connecting it directly to the aux port?
One of the most striking diffrences between the Note 1 and 2 is the sound of the bluetooth audio.
It is way way better than it used to be.I don't know how it compares to direct, but I love it!
It's so good I just went and bought bluetooth headphones for nearly £300.
The Note has the latest bluetooth codec and so do the headphones

It will be better still when Apt-X enabled head units start shipping. Apt-X is a Bluetooth protocol which sounds nearly as good as a wire (some would say it's indistinguishable), and the Note 2 supports it. As far as I know, no currently available car head units support it, but CSR, the company that makes it (and the Bt chips in the Note 2) started shipping chips intended for car head units over the summer, so you should be able to get one real soon. I'm holding out on a new head unit now.
The headphones I got are apt-X, should get them in a couple of days
I got the other version of this Belkin BT handsfree, the one with buttons to change stations and scan, etc. Anyways, I was extremely amazed at the sound quality over the bluetooth. Prior to Note 2, I had iPhone 4 and the music sound so bad, very flat and crappy and I assumed it was because of the bluetooth. But when I switched to Note 2, I was stunned by the music quality, it sounds a whole lot better and so clear.
But be aware that by using the Note 2 stock music player, the sounds will be just as terrible as the iPhone 4. The best sounds I got was from playing music over PowerAmp, the differences were crazily huge.
So there you have it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I am
EDIT: this is the model I got, http://www.megabuy.com.au/belkin-caraudio-connect-fm-bluetooth-p310046.html

Hi Folks,
is there a problem with 4.4.x bluetooth? The question why I'm asking is that I used various BT4 Headsets with my LG G3 and also an S4. Both running KK. As long as I have the phones in my hand they work fine. Putting them in the front pocket of my jeans causes slight stutters. As soon as I put the phones in my rear pocket (where I am used to put it) the sound stutters massively and listening to music/making calls is impossible. If I put the phones on a table I get about 6-7 meters of connection distance before stuttering starts.
Also putting a hand over the earjack containing the receiver (right ear) interrupts the BT connection...
Using the same Headsets on an UMI X2 running Android 4.2 the connection stays great, no matter where I put the phones.
Is anybody experiancing the same situation or knows a solution? Thanks in advance!

I have the exact same issue with my Verizon LG G3. My Moto X which has Android 4.4.2 and my Kindle Fire HDX work fine. Seems to be an issue with the LG G3 as opposed to Android 4.4.2. I have 2 LG G3s and both are bad, although one is definitely worse than the other. I use them with both a Jabra Revo Wireless and a BIG Jambox.
