[Q] Overcharging ? - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
can this phone be overcharged ? like when you leave them charging from the night till u wake up in the morning ?
because i just leave this phone charging overnight (9 hours)
I'm not charging from usual charger with adapter (friends says if its 100% it will stop charging)
what terrifies me is that i'm charging from my laptop via usb cable, if it's already 100%, will it also stop charging like on charger with adapter ?
thx

Well then let me be the first to congratulate you @Bry335. Overcharging a device is bad for the battery. In fact research shows that you should stop charging at around 80-90%. The battery will end up swelling which may lead to future problems like the glass on the back cracking ( since the Z1c has a built in Battery ). You may also end up with shorter battery life and higher temperatures
Also If I were you I'd use the charger that came with the phone...unless the charger you use atm is 5V 1500mA which is the ideal charger for the Z1c
Enjoy your Day

Well, read that: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z1-Z1s/overcharging/td-p/475959
I had no problems charging overnight, also, as it's stated, it's OK to do that...

How long does it take to charge z1c using usb on laptop?

Hi, it's taking a really long time to charge my z1 compact using the usb port on my laptop (macbook air 2010).
It's been an hour and i'm at 27%.
Is this normal?
Also, is quickcharge 2.0 enabled on our phones? Would it make usb charging from a laptop faster? (I think mine is just 0.5 A, whatever Apple gives you).
Not sure on laptops but on my PC I could charge it for 3 hours to 100%.... While on dock I could charge it like 50minutes and it's full. Quickcharge 2.0 works only on chargers with quickcharge 2.0 support. Hence it won't work on laptops. And it's alot more slower since laptops has lower current output on USB ports than usual outlet chargers.

i charge using the dock an it fully charged my Z1c at least 3 hours. how can u fully charged yours at 50 minutes only?
I guess it depends on what you plug the dock into. I haven't timed it but I'm pretty sure mine charges from about 40% to 100% in under an hour. I plug the dock into a usb power adapter.

Returning to the op's question, if I connect the phone to my macbook pro and then close the lid, the phone stops charging immediately. It charges just fine if I leave the lid open. I only tried it once overnight so I don't know how long it took to fully charge.

Model?
Charger suplied with my z1c is EP880.
About 2hrs20minutes from 5% to full battery.
And i think that is good, charging full battery in 50minutes isnt good for battery health.
Same as yours also... EP880. It says here output is 5.0VDC and 1500mAh. I'm pretty sure the battery is ok as it's holding a 2-3 day lifespan before I can drain it to lower 10%. Although I'm no power user. I mostly use the phone for texting and web surfing... The most battery hog usage I can do is reflashing ROMs in recovery which could deduct 1 to 4% of battery after reboot. Our electricity standards here are 220v of current.

Nice shot Riyal.
Same battery/charger/phone but 250% faster charging?
Thats a riddle for sure, laws of physics says that one of factors in equation must be different.
I suggest you to check yours battery in service centre.
2300mAh (healthy) battery can be charged with stronger charger in 50 minutes, ofcourse that isnt good for her longevity.
But with ours EP850 charger thats impossible, battery or electronics inside phone must be messed up.
Calculating with an output of 500mA from an USB 2.0 port, the charging time (0 -> 100%) will result in approximately 5hours. (Note that the battery is normally never at 0mAh)

Nah no need... I'm pretty sure battery is ok as whenever I charge it on my PC it's charging slow also like any other phones. So I think this is just really qualcomm's quickcharge 2.0 kicking in... Anyways I observed the phone. It's not heating up or whatever probably it's just because of the battery quality. It must be having good chemical reaction when charging hence less waste on energy.

Yours phone is .114 firmware also?
Well, something must be different, my phone and others are charging 2 or more hrs on EP880.
Found something interesting...
I have a energy monitor (http://www.elv.at/elv-energy-master-basic-energiekosten-messgeraet-1.html) between EP880 charger and the wall outlet.
If I use the usb cable EC801 (witch comes with Xperia Z1C) on my dk32 dock, the e-mon. shows about 7.5W energy consumption @~50% battery level !
If I use the usb cable EC450 (witch comes with my Xperia P) on my dk32 dock, the e-mon. shows about 5W energy consumtion @~50% battery level !
Conclusion: Phone charges much more faster with EC801 !
I like the older cable because its much more flexible then the new one - so that's the reason I used the old one and than I saw the differences on the measurement device....
FYI: Charging power is also depended on battery level -
Whats yours charging times (from 5-100%)?
Mine 2hrs-2hrs 20min.
I have EC-801 cable and DK31 dock with hims factory cable, same charging times on both.

Yes, thats it, 2hrs is minimum from 5-10% to full battery (with EP880 charger ofcourse).

[Q] what happen to battery after it is fully charged??!!

Hello.. this might sound alittle bit old question or maybe repeated alot but i couldn't find the answer at the internet..
i held two samsung galaxy note 1 and 4, and i noticed when the battery fully charged i can't see that charging mark on the battery.. WHAT DOES THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?
does that mean the system stopped charging the battery and it won't affect on its lifespan? or it is overcharging?
i noticed in Sony Z3 there is option for night charging which is when the battery is full it will automatically disconnect the charging, is that thing the same in samsung but without any option or it can damage the battery because it keep charging??
i hope i can get the answer....
thank you
With the stock charger, or any decent 3rd party charger, it will stop charging when the battery is full and begin again when needed.
It goes off full charge and goes into trickle charge. The phone won't turn off the charger when it's full.

Ive always wondered about the trikle charge effect on phones as well as laptops. So wouldnt that damage the battery overtime? Continually discharging a tiny bit and recharging over and over again?
I wish there was a definitive answer to this any many other perpetual questions regarding the current crop of Li-ion batteries..
It's supposedly less damaging to top of a lithium ion battery than to fully discharge and charge.

Zenfone 2 won't charge beyond 85% while charging via Power Bank

My phone is Asus Zenfone 2 (2GB) It.s charger's specifications are - 5.2V , 1.35A. and battery - Li-Po 3000 mAh battery. When charging via the charger, it gets 100% charged.
I recently purchased Ambrane 13000mAH, P1310, Li-Po battery Power Bank with 5 V, 2.1A and 1A output ports.
When charging my Zenfone 2 via Power Bank, the charging stops sharp at 85%. Initially I thought the Power Bank might be faulty, so I drained my phone's battery to 20% and connected it to the 2.1A port again. And surprisingly it charged my phone again to 85% where again it stopped charging.
Now the functionality of the PowerBank says, when the phone is 100% charged, the PowerBank would wait for few seconds and then will automatically shut down (auto disconnect feature). So, I think at 85% my phone signals the Power Bank, that it is fully charged, and now it should stop charging it any further. However, this is just a lame assumption. But neither do I know what changes in the settings do I need to make nor do I know how to get out of this.
A thought - Can the PowerBank be faulty ? ( 1 time charged Power Bank charged my phone 2+ times to 85%, the 3rd time it reached 65%)
You may need to test with a 2nd phone. We do know that charging the phone does slow down once it hits certain levels, but I've never had an issue with the ZenPower not charging the phone all the way.
after unlocking bootloader and flashing custom rom teameos rom my charger that came with zenfone 2 doesnt work but my trusty old samsung galaxy s3 charger works fine in it not a major loss didnt even use the proper charger much anyways as the cable isnt long enough to reach to my desk or bed and my sammy one is so dont know if its just my phone being weird with it or its the unlocking bootloader custom rom flash thats caused it

tab 3 10" is it possible that power bank broke my tablet?

Hello i was charging my tablet with cheap powerbank from china, (i had charged with that with no problems for few times).
So yesterday i left it to charge with power bank just because i'm testing it.
Now i can't charge p5210 at all and chargers running very hot. When i try to got download mode it says you should have atleast 3volts of battery life.
anyway i should maybe replace the battery, but could it be that the powerbank broke it?

There has to be a short somewhere, it's not the battery, the battery will charge no matter what but the battery life depends on whether or not the battery is damaged. I'm assuming there is a short in the charging port. Try charging the battery with another source? and see if that fixes the issue?

Yep thanks for answer. I was giving it more thoud and i think something is broken in my table, because i think it tried to charge my external battery. Maybe a diode broke or something and two days ago i tried to charge the tablet with wall charger, charger just got really hot.
Well anyway i will be getting new tablet after christmas
Okay weird it's chargin again, I just wiggled the micro usb port a litte bit. But I'm still worried to leave it on wall charger coz of last time i did that it just discharged my battery and wall charger got really hot.

Alright will do. I've not had any problems with any other devices, but will change just to be safe.

Is it possible to turn off the dash charge?

Hi,
Is it possible to turn off the dash charge? 5T is charged only overnight cause it can last the whole day anyway.
PS: I can turn off Fash Charge in my Samsung Note. So it saves battery if I charge only overnight and don't need fast charge feature.
There is no stock option for this. Maybe a custom kernel can support it or a custom kernel that doesn't support it at all would also be a possibility in theory.
I would suggest using a normal power adapter instead of the Dash charging one. Even a normal USB C cable prevents Dash charging as it can only be used with OnePlus' own cable. So maybe get a cheap USB C cable and use that?
Use a low amperage charger. Something like 1000mah. This will slowly charge your phone overnight. But make sure you use a quality charger.
Why would you want to do this? The OnePlus dash charger works differently from other chargers in that it holds the heat in the charging block. If you use a standard adapter you would transfer the heat to the phone while charging. I would NOT recommend doing this.

I use an Anker IQ 6-port Charger with a couple of fairly good quality cables.
I personally try to avoid any kind of fast charge because it will end up damaging the battery life faster than "standard" charge, even if the heat is absorbed by the DASH charger block. IQ Charge adapts itself with the needs of the device connected.
And my unit stays cool if I touch it while its charging.
Charge however you want. But for me, dash charger while getting ready in the morning or when you have a free half hour. Forget about charging overnight. I don't know your usage but for me, this works. The phone just sits on my nightstand without connecting overnight and I lose a very minimal battery amount.

Just not in a software way.
I choose to use wireless charging using a receiver.

It's fine at even less than 1 amp. We have two 5Ts in the house and charge them at night at 0.35 - 0.45 amp.
I saw the dash reduce Ampare when pass above 80%.
(When not rush I use official iPhone 1Amp charger.)
Use 5V/2A standard charger to standard usb type c.
Oneplus 5t = 5V/4A
Quick Charge = 9V/2A
Dash n QC have more power!
I'm using an old 1A Samsung power adapter and dash charge cable and in addition I also use Battery Charge Limit app to limit charging the battery to 80%.

No, it does not, especially not with dash charge. The excess heat is stored in the charger and is not transferred to the phone, and the heat is the only thing that degrades the battery faster.

Your informations are not correct.
Dash (or VOOC, which is the very same technology since OnePlus is an Oppo brand) uses high current fast charging instead of high voltage charging (QuickCharge 2.0/3.0 uses high voltage) and the circuit that produces heat in phones that are not Dash/VOOC compliant is inside the phone, while in Dash/VOOC is inside the charger.
Oppo and OnePlush themselves have acknowledged that it makes SAFE to use the phone while it is quickcharging, NOT that the battery is not getting damaged by the use of a fast charging method, even if it charges at a lower voltage and higher current.
The use of any fast charge technology implies to shorten out the overall battery life.

Just because they moved a bunch of the power regulation stuff to the charger doesn't mean the battery doesn't still get warmer. If you push 4 amps of current into it, it will heat up more so than when it receives, 1 amp.
Now you have me curious though, I guess I'll have to pay close attention to the battery temp next time I charge my battery. I've never used the dash charger, but perhaps I'll have to get it out of the box, and test with it as well just to see what kind of temps I see with a more powerful charger as well. I'm curious to see how much temperature difference there is.
I know on my Nexus 5X my phone always lasted long on a single charge when slow charged (0.35 amps), vs using the factory 3 amp charger.
Constantly topping up the battery overnight for 5-6 hours (assuming your slow charger will charge it to 100% in 2-3 hours) is worse than using Dash to charge it quickly in bursts in the morning and night when you have a spare 30 minutes.
I would never leave a phone stuck on a charger overnight. Especially since even the slowest charger in the works will charge the phone to 100% in three hours or so.

That would be a good idea to do. Although the best is to just Dash charge in short 30 minute bursts when you can.

How does it imply that? Heat is the only factor. Phone is not getting hot(ter than slowly charging) when charging.
What is the truth? With the rapid charging the battery deteriorates faster or better a slower charging?
