root , Injector(Init.d) and Mounts2SD - stock - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello everyone
so i just got my new HTC desire 816 dual sim ( after an old desire 816 which has factory issues ) . with the old device i installed CM11 the unofficial 4.4.4 and installed mount2sd and everything was good
now i got the new device and i'm a bit scared of installing a new rom , so i'm thinking of rooting , adding the injection support then installing mount2sd but i'm not sure about the compatibility of all this mix with the stock
so here what i'm going to do and i need your opinions
1- root the device => guide followed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2775801
i don't know what the wp_mod.ko module do so any tips would be great
2- installing Injector to enable injecting the init.d support http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256647
my device is not on the list so i'm a little bit scared :/
3- installing mount2sd https://github.com/SpazeDog/mounts2sd which i used before with CM11 and was fine
OR
A friend suggested that i install the new CM11 official and then install the mount2sd and done ??
ps* i'm using a lot of apps and i like installing everything so basically i need A LOT of storage for apps and their data and obviously the stock only gives 3GB which is nothing
ps* i kinda like the stock so anything other solutions with the stock would be perfect

The wp_mod.ko file is so that you can enable writing to the SD in the system on stock.
This is basically what allows mount2SD and link2SD to work and init.d support might be needed for both as well so pair that file with your injector and your good to go.
I personally am able to download and put any files I want to the SD thanks to the wp_mod.ko alone. Having init support will allow it to just run scripts on startup and in combination with the wp file it will allow scripts involving the SD card.

I have a feeling that you've hit on a solution to a similar issue that I'm having. At least, we seem to share the same thought process regarding the problem though I'm more on the Link2SD camp.
Make a NANDROID backup, try it, cross your fingers and give it a go. :good:

Only the apps and data that would normally move to an external card. What I can't move are the apps that Titanium Backup would force to external card. The easiest option would be to partition the external card with an ext partition and then use an app like Link2SD to mount it. To do that though, without S-OFF, requires that the OP work.
Even though I'm rooted, I don't have anywhere near enough knowledge to be able to safely*recover if anything goes wrong. ?

There is no S-OFF for our device, and if there was you wouldn't get it by flashing CM11 lol.

You can't! There is no way to S-OFF our device. You are stuck with S-ON. That's it. Unlocking the bootloader, flashing a recovery, and a custom ROM. Those all have nothing to do with S-OFF. Our phone simply doesn't have S-OFF.

Your screenshot shows you trying to install the Xposed Framework, not Mount2SD. Also, the screenshot shows (and the original topic clearly states) that if you're S-ON, you can't install Xposed Framework whilst booted. It is offering you to install through Recovery. If you click OK, the app will automatically boot into recovery and install Xposed Framework. If you had followed the guide about installing Xposed Installer, you would have seen to change the install option from Classic Write to Recovery. You would then bypass the message in your screenshot and gone straight to the install through recovery.
You must be rooted and have a working busybox and recovery installed for Xposed Framework to install/work.
Also, Xposed Framework will not make any bit of difference to Mount2SD or any apps like that. They will still not work. However, Xposed Framework does have some great modules that tweak a phone.

Root, now how is everything working? :D

Hi!
I'm gonna follow the tut on MoDaCo called "14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support"
However, when I have done that, I end up with a generic rom.. right?
So how would I get a custom ROM on my phone? I'm really now on this area and I've only had my Desire for two weeks now, but root access is already itching Anyway, what would some must-be things to do, after root?
Regards
Jacob
The simplest way is to use ROM Manager from the Market and use option to flash ROM from SD card after you heve rooted your phone using Paul's method.

Oh, I thought it was harder to flash a custom ROM, isn't it impossible to do it while the phone is booted? I thought that /system access wasn't possible when the phone was booted...
Basically, once you are rooted you can download rom manager from the market. Find yourself a rom that you like from the dev section and download it then put it on your SD card,
Go into rom manager and select the option to install a rom from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The rom manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you. It's all very very easy now! I'd just suggest that you use the rom backup feature in it as some roms don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install etc. The backup is a nice fallback
Made a root stock restore! anyway what else should I do with my phone now, when it's rooted?
EDIT: Also how do I make my MicroSD compatibly with Apps2SD?

You need to create an 'ext' partition on the card. Normally 512mb. You do this via rom manager or recovery.
You will also need to install the Apps2SD zip ONLY if the rom you have currently flashed comes without Apps2SD installed into the rom.

You cannot run any EXT partitions on FroYo.

You can run the RUU from your PC while the phone is connected and then flash your chosen ROM without connecting to the PC via USB (safer) using ROM Manager.
Basically, once you are rooted you can download ROM Manager from the Marketplace. Find yourself a custom ROM that you like from the Android Development section and download it, then put it on the root of your SD card.
Open up ROM Manager and select the option to install a ROM from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The ROM Manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you.
I'd just suggest that you use the ROM backup feature in it also incase something goes wrong, e.g. ROMs don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install, or forget to partition your SD Card (if necessary) for example.

R6 risk free root from Modaco + Dalvik A2SD = NO GO??

I have installed root with R6 risk free root from Modaco and after that tried to install Dalvik's a2sd but after Dalvik's a2sd install it crashes on the white screen with the HTC logo. I guess something is not compatible since I have tried 4 times with complete wipes of cache, SD, etc. Does anyone know if it is truly incompatible.
Have you formatted your SD card with an EXT partition?
Yes first I formated as fat32 and then through bootloader I created a 512 mb ext partition which i then upgraded to ext 3
same here with r5 and dalvik a2sd, i was just about to start searching for a similar thread that others have the same problem
Not tried just keeping it at ext2?
not really, you think it will make a difference??
But I think the problem is not with the sd because even if I take it out it still gets stuck at boot logo
Guys any ideas???
mirotis, after 3 failed trys myself i flashed the PAY rom and never looking back
i don't think there is a solution for this matter right now
I have the same problem!
What do you mean with "i don't think there is a solution for this matter right now"?
you mean, there is no solution even by trying with another rom? there is no solution at all? and we have to keep our Desire on that status?
if you know how to fix this? or an alternative solution I would appreciate it!

I think he means that he thinks there's no solution to getting A2SD working on the generic rom using the r6 method.
However, after achieving root, you could flash a custom ROM (PaY's is the example in the above) that will support A2SD from the start.
Thanks,
I have done that, and it works!

The Modaco ROM works fine, just not the generic ROM that's provided with the root method, it seems. So once you've achieved root, download the Modaco ROM and flash that

In Linux there's a user called Super User (su) that has practically write access to everything on the system. It's the equivalent of Administrator on Windows basically.
Being rooted allows you to install custom ROM's that you wouldn't normally be able to, install custom themes and install certain apps that require access to system files that you wouldn't normally have access to.
Root is a good thing.
Ah ok I understand now. So you do not need any special software to achieve root, its pressing the volume down button and the on/off button right? Then once Rooted, you can install a custom ROM

There's a few more steps than just that. You normally need to create a GoldCard (Not needed if your device is unbranded) and then flash into an alternative recovery menu.
It's simple really, as long as you follow the r6 method to a tee you should have no issues.

[Q] Root Desire

Can someone explain me please what is a root Desire? What is the different between root desire and non root desire?why must someone root his desire?
thank you for your time
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/07/rooting-a-glossary-of-terms/#more-395
Rooting
This is the process of applying root to your phone. Basically think of it as unlocking all the options of your phone. By default you are a user, and you have limited privilages to do things on your phone. You cannot really modify any internal aspects of the phone. Rooting gives you a super user access, effectively giving you extra permissions and more freedom to play around with your phone. Things such as taking screenshots, backing up all data to do with an app or overclocking your phones processor.

Root is not a great advantage to the average user and tbh if you need to ask then the advantages of rooting will be extreamly minor. The backup is probably the best feature of being rooted. The OTA updates will need to be done via the SD Card Manually if you root but its very easy and should not put you off rooting.

yeah it is I was wondering the same thing 2 days ago here is my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748105
Agreed you can pretty much live without root if you don't want to customise, but I use it for:
1) Moving / removing apps from system in recovery
2) Flashing fixes like wake on menu button or an updated hosts files so no ads appear on phone, or custom icons / frameworks
3) Allows flashing of custom Roms with many features not found on stock Roms
4) Allows Nandroid backups and recoveries to roll back easily
5) Allows apps to be run that require root; Titanium Backup, Cache Manager, Rom Manager, Root Explorer, Terminal Emulator, etc

You go into recovery (start the phone with volume down and power held down)
Then do a nandroid backup, wipe the phone, and choose flash rom and radio. Your rom.zip should be on the root of the sd card. It's worth backing up the sd card too and repartition it into 0 swap; 512mb ext2 and the rest fat32 form recovery if you want to use apps2sd.
So back up sd and phone via windows and titanium backup
then boot into recovery
nandroid
partition
wipe / factory reset
install rom
install latest radio
reboot phone
restore sd card contents & restore via titanium
This assumes you used revoke to root the phone in the first place.
Actually you need some things to:

some basics.
IS IT Possible to use ROM MANAGER and not RECOVERY MODE?

only been using it a day or so but its all good right now. I wouldn't say the speed improvements are massive because although in technical terms they maybe e.g 1 sec becomes 1/4 sec its not massively noticeable. it does feel snappy though! my wifi is spot on as is my mobile network using the roms i detailed on my thread posted above on my virgin mobile uk handset. I didn't try and find a virgin mobile rom btw so i assume this will work on all desires. Only thing so far with Froyo is my Phonelogger app wants to force close all the time but i guess there will be an update for it soon enough.

how to repartition your sd card?
forget all that partitioning nonsense after all the reasons for sending it back are liekly to be broken screen, wont charge, buttons faulty, or touch screen defective all of which will probably result in you not being able to restore to factory anyway!

1: backup all data on the SDCards as it will be wiped
2: if it is not already in the ROM - install ROM Manager: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/rom-manager_fjxs.html
3: use Rom Manager to partition the SDCard. (I use 'no swap' and 512MB EXT3)
4: put the data that you backed up in step 1 back on the SDCard
5: install a ROM that supports app2sd. All ROM cooks publish if whether their ROM supports apps2sc or apps2sd+
5: reinstall all your apps. They will now be installed on the SDCard until that runs out of space.
6: done.

No. On booting the phone will link the memory on the SDCard to your internal memory, so the phone thinks it is loading all apps in internal memory, while it is actually stored on the SDCard.

On creating an extra partition on your SDCard, the Rom manager will ask what size the swap part needs to be (I used 0) and what size the EXT3 (I used 512).

Just try them all. I used NextSense for a while (5.1) and for me it was very stable.
New ROMs come out every day, so just try a couple of them and see which work well for you.
At this moment I use WhiteXperience 2.0 which does not use sense, so I do not use Sense at this very moment. Btw.: WhiteXperience 2.0 is extremely fast with low batery use. For me this is more important than Sense.
With Rom Manager you can quickly create a full backup of your ROM with all the apps and data. So, create a full backup, install a new ROM, play with it for a few hours and either keep the new ROM or restore the old ROM.
This way you can quickly test a new ROM and see if it does what you need.

That is the reason I use WhiteXperience, since it is based on CyanogenMod 6.
But again it is not based on Sense, which is what you want.

I have not tried that. I have only tried ROMs that support Apps2sd.
But then again, just try it out: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-appstosd2-qBx.aspx and let us know if this works for you.
However, since Froyo uses another way of storing apps in SD, you might end up with an unstable system.

After the partition has been created you end up with a formatted, empty SDCard. So no prior formatting is necessary.

I've tried most of them if not all and NexTSense 5.3 is by far the most stable and best Rom on here. It's almost as stock as they come with Apps2sd installed. I think the only app changed is google maps to the slightly better brut version.
Define unstable? Most roms require a clean wipe before installing.
I agree with sbdags. NextSense is absolutely stable and, if you want Sense, this Rom would be the best choice to try out.

[Q] What can I do with a rooted Desire?

Hi guys i am a COMPLETE NEWBIE to android rooting (recently sold my iPhone 4 and got a desire at a SUPER-DUPER bargain price lol) I've rooted with unrevoked but haven't had time to burn the alpharev to do the S-OFF etc.
What can I do with a bog standard stock ROM'd Desire?
Every reply appreciated...as said I really have no idea from here what I can customise etc.
Thanks a lot guys

Flash new ROMs
If you want Android 2.2 and Sense then try LeeDroid - very fast and very stable !
If you want to try Gingerbread before its officially released on the Desire then im finding GingerVillain excellent for day to day use
Rooting will allow certain apps more access..... and allow things like a nandroid backup.
Suggest you try ROM Manager from the market - will allow nandroid backup (ie a FULL backup of your phone in case you screw anything up). It also makes ROM flashing very easy
Apart from that.... "what can you do ?" ... try all the launchers and apps available .... LauncherPro is great, as are all the "GO" apps. Im on Launcher7 at the mo but have also tried SPB shell.
The great thing about android over apple is that you can tweak pretty much anything. try a new dialer or a new keyboard and you can always revert back to the original ...
Basically perform a nandroid backup and then play to your hearts content
.... oh ... and try the UOT Kitchen if you really want to play at customising .... looks scary at first but really isnt

Its the top menu option in ROM Manager - Flash clockwork recovery
Once thats done you should be ok to install ROMs or perform backups straight from ROM manager

hmmm. dont know with that particular ROM. I tend to download ROMs separately and the use ROM Manager to flash from SD
Try looking at the thread in the Android development subforum and it will tell you which does what. There are various flavours of app to SD solutions.
One more thing you might want to do is use ROM Manager to create an EXT partition on your SD card - this will allow apps to be stored there and save system memory. Backup anything vital on your SD card first (on your PC) though. And when it asks go for the largest partition you cam - you will fill it
(its the Partition SD Card option in ROM Manager)

hmmm. not seen that happen before. ive had the exclamation mark occasionally elsewhere (press power to get rid).
You could parition using GPARTED (if you are a linux user) or Parition Wizard (for Windows). a few people have problems with partition wizard but ive used it OK.
You an flash without partitioning but you lose some of the the benefits of App to SD apps.
Google 'android partition SD' - there seem to be lots of other ways to do this (which i havent tried)

Found a fix in a thread on here all i had to do was clear download cache and everything is working now...im currently downloading a rom...do I need to partion the sd card before using a custom rom or?
Just wipe/factory reset and clear cache in recovery.
Then flash the rom (install .zip from sd card)
If we talk about partitioning it depends on which ROM you wanna use.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Have you tried setcpu yet?
Also you can take screenshots of your phone screens if you're into that kinda thing.
Look for shoot me in the Market.
App2SD
If the InsertCoin ROM has Apps2SD+ (Not totally sure if it does) and you have the ext partition then as far as I am aware it should pretty much take care of itself.
I personally have found the Redux 1.1.1 ROM to be the best one that I have used so far. It is a GingerBread ROM and with the EXT partition done all you need to do is apply the apps_dalvik2ext-UNSIGNED
.zip to use the extra memory.
Search for Redux throug this site.
You will not regret the move.

Awake again now .....
download quick system info from the market. that should show you whether apps2sd is working.
you dont have to 'do anything' to get apps2sd working. if you have the right partition, and the ROM supports it, then apps will install there rather than on internal memory (although most apps still require a small amount of internal memory).
