Hi,
While on holiday I put my Desire HD on charge over night (was working fine at that point), but when trying to turn it on the next morning it just vibrated 7 times and that was it - the phone would do nothing. The phone doesn't respond to the hard reset process described on the HTC website and no lights come on at any point (not even when connected to the charger).
The only time the phone does anything, is when you eject the battery and re-insert it. At the point where the battery touches the contacts inside the phone, it vibrates 7 times again and nothing more. The phone has not been modified in any way and uses the original OS from HTC. All the phone does is vibrate 7 times when inserting the battery. Otherwise it's completely dead.
This would, I presume, normally be a simple warranty case (8 month old phone). However, in my desperation to reset/fix the phone, I tried pressing what I thought was a reset button underneath the SIM & memory card cover (with the tip of a pen). Instead of the 'click' that I expected though, it pierced what turned out to be a small black sticker - an action which HTC says has invalidated the warranty on my phone. They have now created a return reference for me, but I'm likely to be hit with a big bill for repair if/when I send the phone in.
I understand that confusing a sticker for a button is a stupid thing to do, but I can't change what I did and I genuinely thought that I was pressing a button on the back of the phone.
Is there any possible solution without having to send the phone in to HTC?

Can you post a pic of the black sticker you accidently clicked.. Also any other "void stick" there is
I'd like to know if it is obvious that you tried to open the phone up or not..
To me, if you cannot get into Recovery nor Bootloader, your pretty much screwed, try pulling battery out, insert it back in, hold the Volume down button, and while holding press Power button?

I'll have access to a Digital SLR tonight and will post a photo tonight. Looking at the phone though, it is clearly visible that it has not been touched with anything other than the tip of a pen. There is another small sticker that I found in the battery compartment - this is completely in tact.
I don't think anyone looking at the phone would doubt that the one sticker was pierced with the tip of a pen, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to make any difference. The guy I spoke to from HTC was friendly and polite, but he insisted that it wouldn't make any difference - I broke the rules and that's it.
I suppose the only reason that I'm disappointed is that I've now had four HTC smartphones and I've never requested warranty support before. Oh well... :-(

Here's the pic. I didn't bother taking a photo of the other sticker as it hasn't been touched or damaged at all. Would you say it's worth sending the phone and enclosing a note explaining what I did?

Sending it I believe is the only way the phone will get fixed. DO include a note explaining what you did but I dont know how useful it will be. You never know though. As the other one is still intact they may believe you and do it for free.

Apparently it was a motherboard failure. The board was replaced and now it's working fine again.

Exactly the same is happening to me... 8 months old too..
About to send it off for warrenty, but can you tell me if you lost all your information and number, apps on the handset, as I cant remember the last time I did a sync..

I just got answer from HTC service that motherboard of my DHD is broken and they wont replace it because of unautorised firmware flashed...

Lol...thats bad, This might be the first case which I have seen returned because of unauthorized firmware..., Don't leave it like that and read the full document which come with the phone. There will be some wording which might not be clear but should be enough to fight back...
Yep...I think I'm the first person who returned phone back from warranty because of no HTC firmware flashed...As soon as I get my DHD and documents back I'll report what they said.

Yes, if you send the phone in for repair, you will lose everything stored on the device that you haven't backed up. I think this will be the case even if they don't replace the motherboard. Any apps that you previously bought through Android Market can be restored though - you don't have to buy them again.

Hmm.. That's bad news... Trying to read between the lines a bit - Are they saying that they won't replace the motherboard because you have flashed the phone, or because they suspect that flashing the phone played a direct role in the failure?
If the motherboard has died surely they'd replace it? Then again, if the motherboard had died completely - how would they know that the phone had been flashed in the first place?
When exactly did the problem start for you?

A returned my phone to the seller so I don't have direct contact with HTC service but the seller got information from service that: motherboard is dead because of flashing unauthorized firmware/unauthorized firmware damaged motherboard...I'm waiting to get my phone back from service with documentation and then I'll fight back...
My phone works perfectly normal and when I tried to reebot it simply wont boot...it's strange and I wonder how firmware it self could damage motherboard?
Ok, DHD came back from HTC service with all documentation and statement that they will not repair it etc...and it normally boot into OS...But it couldn't boot into bootloader - just vibrates 3 times.So I booted it again into OS and flashed again the hboot and after that phone successfully boot into bootloader .So now my DHD is fully functional I just wonder why HTC claimed that motherboard is broken and wanted me to pay for replacement...?
Very strange - 8 month fault
I too have a DHD - this one is stock standard - got it back from employee today as he said it was not charging (worked right up till then). i plugged it in and got a flashing orange amber light. left if for a while noting would work. finally worked out if i inserted teh battery while plugged in it woud give me a solid charging light and vibrate 7 times.
Seems strange that they are all faulting at 8 months. Mine was an import, so it might have to go back to singapore or malaysia or where ever it cam from.
Checked battery it is at 3.8V so ok.

My warranties over and i've got the same problem!
I just wanted to know if your phone wasn't working at all before you gave it in for service? And when it came back, it was working again?
And be not ready to repair it, they weren't ready to repair it for a fee either?

My phone wasn't working at all it didn't boot even display splash screen...just vibrates.I heared phone services have devices called "BOX" which can unbrick your dead phone.I think they did it with my phone and when it boots they saw my own boot screen instead of stock HTC...so it was clear to them they can void my warranty and offer motherboard replacement for fee (high fee ).I didn't agree for that and phone returned to me unbricked.I just had to reflash hboot again.

I've tried using the PB99IMG.zip method with older versions of android, but I'm running oxygen 2.3.3 rom, and the process fails every time. I've looked on the htc dev site for the 2.3.3 RUU, however when I try and download it it says file is cannot be found. Does anyone know where the RUU can be downloaded from?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much, I've managed to find the RUU. So it gets somewhere when I try and use the PB99IMG.zip method, but it just says parsing with a list of ten numbers and nothing happens :/
Try running RUU.exe when phone is booted into fastboot (and connected to PC obviously)

My main problem is that I can't boot into fast boot :/ when I hold the back button and turn the phone on it still goes to HBOOT. I have also ripped off my volume rocker to make sure its not the down button stuck If I plug it into my computer using HBOOT my computer picks up and Android 1.0 device. However if I go into a cmd and use "adb devices" it still says no devices found :/ and the RUU doesn't pick up the phone either when its plugged in.
Even though I've had clockworkmod installed, the phone is showing S-ON, does this mean I can send it back to HTC and it would still be in warranty?

Yeah the warranty should still cover it HOWEVER, from past experience, this sort of situation happened if the phone suffered from water damage, so I'm not sure whether you'd be okay. If you want I suppose it'd be worth a try, but if it turned out not to be covered by warranty you'd be looking at a hefty repair fee or a £20 return fee. It's up to you, if it's not water damage then you'd definitely be covered, shouldn't have ripped off the buttons though lol, don't know what they'll say to that.

Hmm it could be water damage from the amount of sweat produced when I was running as it was about half an hour after that that it broke. I've got a One X in the post anyway (luckily) so I may as well send the desire off to see if its salvageable, and if the cost is too much I can just leave it with them. I can put the buttons back on so that they work fine. So hopefully they'll be able to repair it (or send a new one ) and I can sell it If not, I'll be at no loss. Thanks for the help bortak

Just thought I'd say, sent it back for warranty repair (even though it was S-OFF, rooted and had a custom rom, HTC fixed it and sent it straight back

I own a HTC wildfire : A3333. i had spoken to a htc call centre two weeks back as my phone was not charging at all, and on their recommendation i gave my phone to their service centre
On a preliminary check, they told me that due to water logging(ie my phone went through a wash cycle more than 7 months back) my charging IC had got corroded and that was the cause of it and they quoted Rs. 3000 as the cost of replacement with no guarantee/warranty. I asked them not to replace it and i collected my phone from them.
On recovering the phone i found out that they had forgotten to replace the screws, hence on opening the back-panel the rear panel was accessible. i checked the panel of my cellphone and also got a second opinion from a 3rd party service centre and they concluded that there wasn't any hardware issues.
I also was able to charge my phone through the fastboot in my bootloader which happened for the first time in my experience & my bootloader seems to be intact.
earlier before i gave my phone to the service centre i was able to switch on and use my phone if the battery was fully charged but i couldn't charge my phone.
now after i have received my phone am neither able to go to my recovery nor am i able to start my phone. on pressing the power button my phone goes to the white HTC screen and it switches off.
i have tried pushing the recovery img through fastboot, which my computer reflects as a success & i have also tried RUU. my phone still doesn't respond. is there anything that i haven't tried or something that i should try??
hoping for some help desperately!!
firstly wash ur set's borad through WD40 and then wait until it comes up on its real position ,,,then try to boot

Have you tried to pc49img a recovery to the device? Also, in the bootloader try hitting factory reset.

Sympthoms are these....
The device does not boot - it shows HTC brilliance screen forever (until battery permits)
when in SAFEBOOT mode - the recovery and factory reset are not working for me (recovery shows some black screen with some dark-light HTC image on it, then screen goes black and the phone vibrates several times and then silences)
Attempts to "factory reset" go to nowhere - it just hangs.
The device is seen in FASTBOOT mode and is seen from PC via USB, and accepts commands,
I can issue FASTBOOT commands, and can see partitions and even read sectors out from it.
The command "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" isn't in the list, hovewer, so it responds as unknown subcommand.
Attempts to flash an image from fastboot command fail.
Is it became a brick?

ahh, almost forgot... I brought the device to HTC official service, they agreed to repair it, by overwriting software version, but they returned the deviced back to me as it could be re-programmed back to life.
They proposed to replace a motherboard, so I took a moment to chat with my friends before I come to a decision.
(its a pity thing... the keyboard is really nice on the device.....)
I will be very grateful for an advices on the matter, especially to those who will guide me on what else to try.

Are they going to charge you to replace the logicboard? If not do it for sure, if they're going to charge less than 50$ its a fair deal, otherwise you could buy a used one a do it yourself

I will give it a try.....
in our HTC repair service (I am in russia, there are an awful lot of stranger bears drinking vodka on streets and other strangenesses) they asked me to pay 150$ for replacement of board... (an update - not 150, rather 200$ - I miscalculated first time.........sorry)
this isn't fair, IMO.
I very much suspect that internal flash memory gives sporadic failures, that is why device became out of order...
My suspicion is based on previous usage history - namely, several times (3-5) I used "reset to factory", which I fail to explain otherwhise.
All in all,
your advice on finding used device is probably a best way, I afraid.

I've been searching here and all over the internet and no progress yet so I decided to make a new account here just to see if anyone can help me because I'm out of ideas right now.
This morning my Nexus 5x (Non-rooted Nougat) woke me up like every morning, after dismissing the alarm I left it on my bed and when I came back to grab it later I noticed it shut off.
Here are the facts and what I have tried so far:
- Battery level was almost full
- I tried to turn it on but nothing happened, not even the Google logo
- Connected it to power and no icons or any response at all
- Left it connected for like an hour and tried to get it into recovery mode
- I was able to get into fastboot mode a few times but after electing "start" or "recovery mode" the Google logo comes up and then shuts off again right after.
- Tried getting into recovery mode after leaving it charging for a while again but I couldn't even get into fastboot this time, no signs of life at all.
- Disconnected the battery for a few minutes and tried to get into fastboot mode again, this time it worked but same thing happened. (Google logo then shuts off)
- Tried connecting it to my PC but doesn't show up on Linux nor Windows, on Windows it makes the sound like I connected a peripheral but that's pretty much it.
- I have USB debugging enable but never accessed my stuff through usb connection because I have had this issue before where it is connected but it won't show up or it shows up but won't let me access the files even though the phone is unlocked.
At this point it just won't do anything and I ran out of ideas. I just want to at least recover some pictures and information I have in it that isn't backed up, if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

It sounds like you might have encountered the hardware bootloop issue. This is theorized to be caused by bad solder for the eMMC chip or bad eMMC chip. This was an acknowledge problem on a related model LG phone, but hasn't been acknowledged for N5x.
If you are under warranty, you should start the replacement process before it runs out.
If you want to try something that sounds crazy but has worked for some people, put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes then see if it boots. If it does, quickly back up as much data as you can, then wipe the phone in preparation to RMA exchange.
Just boot to bootloader (fastboot) then unlock it and flash a factory image... u can find many guides to this operation on the XDA

Same here... cannot enter recovery mode, so flashed new rom stock rom.
The flashing was fine but it didn't help.
guys if u can get to the bootloader, sure it can be fixed.. everything is possible with the fastboot, u can fix any issue. if it's a hardware issue the bootloader wouldn't work as well.

I've had the same problem with my 5X, except my alarm didn't even go off! I woke up 15 minutes late to see the boot screen "enter your pattern to start Android". I entered my pattern and it looked like it was going to boot up but when I went back to it it was blank. Tried again, got to the Google loading dots and it switched off again and I haven't been able to power it up since. No bootloader, nothing. Tried all the troubleshooting steps on the Nexus Google Support pages (I did post a link but because I'm new it won't show, so just Google "Nexus Support") and nothing worked. I also knew the battery was fully charged because it had been on charge overnight and when I did get to the 'enter your pattern' screen, the battery icon in the notification bar was full.
I requested a call back from Google and nothing happened so I tried the chat and they said it sounded like a hardware issue and are sending me a replacement device within the next 3-5 working days. Good that they're replacing it. Bad that it happened on a device less than a year old and they only offered £10 Play Store credit by way of compensation, when I've had to spend £15+ on a PAYG sim card to use in my old phone in the meantime because the nano sim in my 5X was too small and I've spent over an hour and half this afternoon wasting my time with troubleshooting and waiting for a call back... Not really the customer service I expected from Google for what appears to be a hardware issue. If you bought the phone from Google, my advice would be to get in touch with Google Support and they should replace it under warranty.

I've had the same problem with my 5X, except my alarm didn't even go off! I woke up 15 minutes late to see the boot screen "enter your pattern to start Android". I entered my pattern and it looked like it was going to boot up but when I went back to it it was blank. Tried again, got to the Google loading dots and it switched off again and I haven't been able to power it up since. No bootloader, nothing. Tried all the troubleshooting steps on the Nexus Google Support pages (I did post a link but because I'm new it won't show, so just Google "Nexus Support") and nothing worked. I also knew the battery was fully charged because it had been on charge overnight and when I did get to the 'enter your pattern' screen, the battery icon in the notification bar was full.
I requested a call back from Google and nothing happened so I tried the chat and they said it sounded like a hardware issue and are sending me a replacement device within the next 3-5 working days. Good that they're replacing it. Bad that it happened on a device less than a year old and they only offered £10 Play Store credit by way of compensation, when I've had to spend £15+ on a PAYG sim card to use in my old phone in the meantime because the nano sim in my 5X was too small and I've spent over an hour and half this afternoon wasting my time with troubleshooting and waiting for a call back... Not really the customer service I expected from Google for what appears to be a hardware issue. If you bought the phone from Google, my advice would be to get in touch with Google Support and they should replace it under warranty.

I contacted Google and they didn't help me at all because my warranty expired last month, they literally just told me to put in a repair request at the LG repair webpage....this sucks

My wife's Nexus 5 exhibited the exact same symptoms this morning. It's been running perfectly for 20 months and today it died, and we're unable to even get into the bootloader screen or power on the phone.
Taking your advice, we put it in the freezer for 15 minutes and were able to perform a factory reset wiping all data from the phone. We are going to take advantage of Google's Christmas 2017 promotion and return the Nexus 5X and buy a Moto 4X. They require you perform a factory reset before returning the phone in order to receive a credit for the returned Nexus 5. Thank you so much for the help!

If you are under warranty, you should start the replacement process before it runs out.
If you want to try something that sounds crazy but has worked for some people, put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes then see if it boots. If it does, quickly back up as much data as you can, then wipe the phone in preparation to RMA exchange.

I've just posted this thread overlooking yours. I think this is becoming another common issue. Has the freezer trick worked with anybody else?
I am having the same issue described here. My Nexus 5x went into a Bootloop about one month ago, but I was able to get it working again by going into Recovery Mode. About 4 days ago it went into a constant Bootloop, just showing the Google screen, and I couldnt get back in to recovery mode. I ordered a new phone on Tuesday (Pixel 2) and as long as I am able to do a factory reset I should get a $150 credit when I send this phone back. So, in desperation, I took a chance on the 15 minute freezer trick, and it worked! I was able to get into recovery mode (power + volume down, select Recovery Mode, little dude on his back came up, pushed power + volume up once) and cleared the cache and applied the factory reset. Ridiculous that this phone only lasted 18 months, but if I get the $150 credit I will be happy.
Same problem here -- just froze for a few seconds, powered off, and won't turn back on. Not a boot loop issue as there is no response at all from any buttons. Swapping the mainboard from a working phone powered up without a problem, but obviously that's the other phone's emmc.
I tried the freezer thing and it sort of worked- LCD powered on for a couple seconds, but then shut back off again and even that only happened once. That's progress over the usual absolutely no response though... Anyone have insight into why the temperature would matter? something is overheating that this gives a bit of wiggle room since it starts much colder than usual? maybe a more complex analog electronic situation?
I would happily pull the flash chip off and put it in a emmc reader, but I think I'm out of luck because from what I've read the dm-crypt key is generated from some data stored in in the processor's trust zone thing. I know the "password" but if that's only part of what makes the key and the rest isn't on the flash chip I suppose there's no point in going that route.
I don't care about the hardware surviving; mostly just looking to recover my data. Anyone have suggestions? Hardware debugging direction? I'm willing to buy some electronics test equipment (within reason of course; not picking up a 10000USD rework station for some old photos and contact list...)

The only way to connect that buddy to PC is to get SoC (CPU) working, so theoretically you can go towards reballing the chip. But I guess it's not an easy thing for such a little chip. Also u will need kinda plate for balls, i think there are no common ones, so u can make it yourself if have a technical education.
Another way is to connect memory right to PC without a phone but with some connector. IDK if there are any available, but this looks much more simple. I actually got the same happened, and tried to heat the plate, but with particular success.

I've seen a post of a guy who sent his motherboard to china and got reballed it and gained 4gb of ram. Can be wrong, but it was around $50 and a month of time.
